that steady breathing would be activating the vagus nerve which is the communicator nerve between brain and stomach. The breathing activates the para sympathetic nervous system which would calm the stomach down.

I have autism and IBS. Eating gluten free improved my digestive issues. I also eat a ketovore diet because most fiber causes digestive issues too. I eat a lot of animal protein and saturated fat. Animal protein has always been tricky because of my food texture issues but I figured it out. A lot of folks with celiac/diverticulitis/crohn's/IBS benefit from a low/no fiber diet. I don't understand the vegan diet, it made my digestive issues and food texture issues worse!

I think stress influence is huge. I had many GI issues including acid and bile reflux when I had a lot of stress at work and I slept for 5 hours for 2,5 years. When I quit that job the symptoms were gone within a month. Now I still have some colon issues when I have a stressful episode. The reaction is almost immediate.

I saw a massive improvement for IBS when I eliminated gluten and dairy especially, and cutting back on meat, white/ refined sugar and processed food. Artificial sweeteners and other additives are known to cause issues, too. There are some resources online suggesting that many on the spectrum react to gluten and milk. Sadly gluten & dairy something they seem to "sprinkle"into unlikely groceries, like crisps, meat balls and prefabricated food etc. Point being, it takes some investigating to figure out what to eat, but it´s worth it when it helps. It definitely helped me. Btw there are loads and loads of great substitutes for dairy products now, and prices are lowering bc there is a huge market for it....(hmmm, wonder why.)

star man99 I have gotten better health from eating gluten free whole food vegetarian (and transitioning to vegan recently). Making the food from scratch as much as possible. However, I am not a nutritionist or doctor, so best if you do your own research of course! This is simply what worked for me, and maybe it would work for other highly sensitives.

star man99 « Whole foods are plant foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible, before being consumed» : google search. I have learned most about food from internet, and even instagram, and books. If you dont know where to start I would start very small, and maybe eliminate food groups that you might suspect are causing problems. Thats what I did, and started to eat more vegetables and fruit. However, its eventually up to each one of us to discover what we need. Good luck!

oh, now some things make sense! I have always had gut problems which oftentimes led to such horrible cramps that I even fainted. But after switching to a vegan diet it became much much better. My conclusion, after hearing your explanations, is that eating animal products, which are usualy loaded with stress hormones, caused me (unconiously) so much stress that it resulted in this huge gut problems. I like this idea of "keeping your brain happy, keeps your gut happy and vice versa"

The association between autism and gut issues, is similar to the connections between mental and physical health. In terms of you talking about the impact of one on the other being like a circuit. Either one can have an impact on the other. If you're stressed out can = gut issues and vice versa. It's actually a really good example of mental health impacting physical health. An increased release of cortisol over a prolonged period of time can also suppress your immune system's ability to be fully functional. It all ties together. I know this is from a while ago, but thank you guys, this was really helpful and interesting. Research! Whoop! 😁 It was really nice to see how you guys are with each other as well (^_^) made me smile 💙💙💙💙 Hypermobility and ME/CFS have a lot of crossover symptoms as well. Some of those being IBS symptoms and fatigue, among others. Though I understand that you (Ella) now know you have EDS. you've been on such a long journey to find out what is going on for you. Especially after watching your most recent video connected to your gut problems 🤗💙. It's crazy to see your personal journey, and the progression of your medical journey from so long ago, to you finally knowing what is happening for you.

Every time he has a stomach ache he wants to stay home from school. He’s missing a lot of school. He’s like a 4 year old when it comes to hygiene. I started taking really chill neighborhood walks every night to help with my digestive issues, and it does really help. Now, I don't feel like my day is complete until I take my evening walk. It helps me get in the mood to start winding down. I also have a really simple diet. Ham and cheese and lettuce sandwiches, granola, and sometimes canned soup. That way I don't have to make any decisions about food. Making decisions can be very paralyzing for me, so eating the same thing every day has really helped me to make sure I eat in the first place. Sometimes I even make two sandwiches at once so that when I'm inevitably feeling too overwhelmed or too focused to stop what I'm doing to eat, I have food already prepared that I don't have to think about

I clicked on this video as I have a friend with autism and Crohn's Disease, but I have M.E, joint hypermobility syndrome, IBS, diverticulitis, and have been investigated for hiatus hernia. It had never occurred to me that JHS makes hiatus hernia more likely. You're trying to say Ehler Danlos Syndrome, of which JHS a subset. I'm terrible at remembering to remember to drink water! It's been 30 degrees today, and I've only drunk half a pint of fluids. Massaging the belly helps, but you should do it in a clockwise motion, as that's the way your guts go. Warm baths also ease stomach pain and gets things moving.

I used to get acid reflux from stress and most fruits due to the acidic nature of them. I found out if ate mainly meat, tubers, & vegetables i do not have these issues. Apparently many northern Europeans have a higher stomach acid content as our very recent ancestors were hunter gatherers that ate mostly meat, tubers, berries, & greens and therefore had higher acid content in their stomach to digest that high meat diet and didn't really eat grains or fruit as people in Mediterranean and tropical climates did because those did not grow were they lived. Therefore they adapted differently to their climate and eating mostly dried meats and fish in winter, fermented foods, pickled foods, some vegetables and berries. Eating this diet has helped me out in many other ways like getting rid of constipation, chronic sinus infections and polyps, and constant eczema which turned out to be a Celiacs rash and doctors said was just genetic. hope this helps someone.

I am autistic older adult who only got diagnosed with ASD in 2014. I ate normally but the only things I did not like eating were sterilised milk, parsnips and new foods. I get mild to moderate IBS symptoms when I am run down, ill or under stress all three. I have always had digestive issues where I would have regular constipation and other symptoms which I have forgotten as a child, which I thought was due to my anti-epileptic medication but the anti-epileptic medication that I am now on the anti-epileptic medication and it is do not give constipation symptoms. I have also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which digestive issues and chronic sinus problems which means breathing is so difficult as my nose on the left side and cheek is blocked and I am already unable to blow my nose properly and the doctor just gives me nasal inhalers that don't work as I am unable to clear my nose due to not being able to blow my nose. Now I don't like the texture of avocado as it reminded of green jelly air fresher and muesli much makes my front itch and I have stopped liking icing and now I like eating marzipan and marmalade (but not the same time) which I do not like as a chilld.

Ehlers-Danlos is closely related to Autism, it's in my family. Not a medical opinion, just observational, but people with EDS often look a lot younger than they are (Rob), and patients are often told JHS when it's EDS (Roz). EDS affects collagen, and stretchy tissues in the bowel could be a symptom, so the hiatus hernia and diverticular disease could both be caused by it. The breathing deeply is calming to the Vagus nerve, which connects the brain and gut. Patients with EDS often have Dysautonomia which causes GI problems as well as POTS etc. I know you all like research, so you can look it all up! I hope this is helpful. PS people with EDS can have abnormal reactions to anaesthetic, which can make routine medical procedures more uncomfortable. There are CT scans and camera capsules which may mean avoiding a colonoscop.

Speaking as a naturopathic nutritionist it needs to be said that our diets are SO important! We need to be eating real food, natural and unprocessed. Anyone who says that what you eat isn't going to affect your mental emoltional and physical health has no right to be advising people on their health. Our bodies don't know what to do with highly processed refined foods with little to no nutritional content?! so it either expels it straight away as loose stools which doesn't allow the body time to extract the nutrients, or it gets stuck in the bowel, putifies and dries up creating toxicity in the bowel, creating inflammation. When I work with people who are on the autistic spectrum I aim to find them a healthier alternative to the obsession for biscuits or noodles; and yes you're absolutely right Stress is very much involved in terms of poor digestion, absorption, so malnourishment and dehydration cause the body to feel stressed, so you feel stressed. Everything inter connected.

Overstimulation really makes my digestion issues worse! I am super sensitive to people's skin touching mine and my digestion has improved when I started wearing long sleeves all the time so I can't feel skin of others'.

I don't have digestive issues. However, I do have a very diverse palette when it comes to food. I will try basically anything I've never tried before, but if I try something and it's either really spicy or greasy, I will not want to eat it anymore. Although, I will feel slightly guilty for not being able to eat it.

When you eat something that makes you react, like curry, try having a chai with it. I find that aromatic spices settle my stomach right down; and I make it with only milk, no water, but you can actually use some, or only, water, or any milk substitute. With just a tiny bit of sweetening, it's dessert-like, and quite soothing.

I started having major issues with too much stomach acid when I was twelve. Doctors put me on everything from Nexium to Prilosec to omeprazole (before it was over the counter). Nothing worked at all for decades until at the age of 37 I was finally prescribed pantoprazole. It TOTALLY fixed my acid issues, and now I can even drink orange juice again, eat spicy foods, etc. My stepbrother had the same problem, with severe nausea so bad it was affecting his work. They put him on pantoprazole, problem solved. Can't recommend it enough!

So I'm self diagnosed IBS and I know I get it from extreme stress or surprises. The phone would ring, and I immediately had diarrhea! Or my mom or sister called my name, and diarrhea!ugh! But now I struggle with dismotility. Esophagus works backwards and my sphincter doesn't close when food goes down so for 8 yrs, I've vomited! Low blood sugar is horrible everyday and I am getting it fixed soon thank God! Cleveland clinic!

Jamara: How was the Cleveland Clinic? I have everything you mentioned, been going on for 10 years. My G tube and J tube have failed, lost 60 lbs, and need new doctors. Mayo in Az is where I’m at currently, but I’m wondering if it’s worth going to Cleveland Clinic? Mayo dilates my esophagus all the time, but it’s paralyzed now, so no solid foods for me. Can you update on what Cleveland Clinic did for you, exactly? Thanks and I hope you’re better now!

I've had acid reflux in the past, and for some reason foods like bananas and/or caffeine can give me trouble sometimes. I wouldn't say, though that I have serious digestive issues, and I think I may be on the spectrum. On the other hand, my younger sister who is not on the spectrum has had way more serious digestive issues than me. My aunt is sensitive to gluten, and I don't think she is on the spectrum. Is it possible that some people just have stomach issues regardless of whether or not they are on the spectrum? I would be curious to see some large-scale studies on the issue. I'm not sure if the correlation between autism and digestive issues is so clear.

I can´t have any processed or poor quality food and the whole process of preparing and eating food takes me forever. When I´m out and about I usually can´t eat anything. Babyfood, plain yoghurt, juice and oatmilk is usually all I can handle on a workday. Stress has a huge impact on my ability to eat and digest. A lot of times I feel very overstimulated and stressed out after a meal. Anybody else experiencing that? Growing my own organic vegetables and eating lots of gathered wild herbs and fruits has helped tremendously with gut health, mood and motivation to eat because I don´t want it to go bad when I have a personal relationship and cared for that plant and watched it grow. But it can also stress me out when I´m in shutdown or just lacking basic executive functioning skills to prepare a meal and I´m scared of it going bad.

Indian here. Indian style toilets do not help at all in my case with my constipation issue that I've had since childhood. All Indian toilets did for me in childhood was to make me miserable because there is no way to hold that position without cramping up your legs or it becoming painful in one way or the other. With a western style commode now I'm a happy camper (you could actually say that I camp because of how long it takes 🤣).

That is ironic. I am from the USA but my dad grew up in the Philippines. He taught me to squat like they do in the Philippines. They squat to do many activities not only for the toilet. It does help me to go to the bathroom. Maybe my legs didn't get tired because I also squat and do many other activities on the floor. I feel very uncomfortable in chairs. Glad you found western toilets! Different things work for different people! 😂

A canadian friend with IBS recommended the FODMAP diet to me to help figure out my digestive issues. I got a book with a meal plan and gave it a go - it really was helpful...but all the foods I like are the foods that make my digestion worse :-/ in particular onion/shallots/chives/garlic... how do you cook without???

Green parts of spring onions - you can replant them and they'll keep growing so you can cut them, garlic infused oil is also useful.
