I’m autistic and I also struggle with brushing my teeth, but the only thing that has helped is task pairing. I really like showers (hate baths) so I always brush my teeth before having a shower and say to myself “I’m cleaning the inside before cleaning the outside” and that has helped me ❤ also having showers around the same time everyday using alarms on my watch helps keep me consistent, hope this helps someone else! 💕

I'm not autistic, but brushing my teeth before showering makes things easier for me too. Like, after I finis showering (which can be kinda tiring) I don't have to worry about brushing my teeth and stuff, I'm done.

I am an undiagnosed "High functioning" autistic. And I wanted to thank you for this video. I don't have as many sensory issues as when I was little, but I do hate brushing my teeth. I often just don't remember to do it, or I feel like I just somehow don't have time. I know how ridiculous that sounds. I know the rest of the world thinks 'what kind of gross caveman type adult never brushes their teeth?!' I get all of that. But watching your video made me feel a little less like a freak. And that was priceless.❤

Thank you so much for being vulnerable enough to talk about this stuff!! I am 33 and found out I have autism last year - total game changer! Trying to improve my self care struggle and just knowing I'm not alone in these feelings makes a world of difference! P.S. one hack I discovered this week is using wrist bands to prevent any water from running down your arms during face routine (mega sensory trigger for me) - love the super soft and cute animal plushie ones I ordered on Amazon for less than $10.

Hello Morgan! And all the people here I'm a 14 y/o female and I just recently started to learn about autism from November last year, at first it was just some content creator that's giving some insight about autism and make some relatable things for autistic people. My mom works at an autism center, but the kids there mostly are kids who has really heavy autism and struggle with basic things, not to be rude but they're the type of autistic that will come to normal people's mind when somebody say "think of an autistic person", and my mom is a really kind and amazing person who handles and care for those kids well...I grew up thinking that's what autism looks like, and my mom don't really know that much about autism except for those extremely clear ones that most people know And recently these content has gone more and more relatable, with the masking, stimming, demand avoidance, not liking eye contact and loud noises, struggle with social interaction, and having a literal mind, afraid of changes, and I think I do have special interest, I used to have a bad sensory issues tho most of it doesn't really come from hygiene and it has gotten better, I can relate to things like autistic burnout and meltdown and shutdowns.. I am not diagnosed, but I think I might be on the spectrum, but sometimes if I wanna explain some of my autistic trait it kinda makes me feel like I'm just trying to be special because I am not diagnosed so it's feels like claiming to be something I'm not, and I feel kind off ashamed like why can't I just deal with it it's not like it's that bad, and if I maybe take an assessment and I ended up not getting diagnosed it'll just make me look like a fool, and I live in Indonesian, and I feel like the understanding of autism here is not that high since I can't even find the term masking in here, so I'm afraid if I am actually on the spectrum but didn't get diagnosed because of the lack of knowledge, and now I'm just confused and don't know what to do, I don't really know if I can call myself autistic or not

High functioning women and girls frequently go undiagnosed for decades. When they studied it they only studied it in boys so when girls come along that don't meet their version of what autism looks like they don't get diagnosed. That doesn't mean they're not autistic though. If you feel comfortable doing so, why don't you make a list of your struggles and talk to your mom. My grandma wasn't diagnosed until she was in her 60s, and I wasn't diagnosed until I was 9. My bestie wasn't diagnosed until she was 15. Girls are often diagnosed later if at all. Even if you don't get diagnosed, working with your mom to accommodate for your symptoms can be a huge help. I wish you the best of luck. ❤

Hi, I'm 15 and am currently going through something very similar. I'm still undiagnosed but if I could guess the chances of me being autistic, I would probably say like an 89% chance. After a while of trying to convince my parents and failing because of their unwillingness to understand that autism isn't just a "kid in a wheelchair saying gibberish" which it sometimes is, I gave up on trying to convince anyone...because the only thing I needed to do was try to convince myself. I've successfully convinced myself that I'm autistic and all the thorough research I've done heavily supports it and seeing as that research makes up most of the criteria used by psychologists and school counsellors, I may not even need a diagnosis. It's your choice if you want to do it and it can be reliable to some extent. I may probably end up doing it when I'm ready but as of now I know that no matter what anyone else tells me, I know deep inside that I'm autistic and I've been since childhood

I understand how you feel, but at the same time, you are not claiming to be something that you're not because you don't know whether you're on the autism spectrum or not, but if you have a lot of traits related to autism, It's okay to feel ashamed, but I need to tell you that it is not shameful at all and that if something is bothering you then you should talk about it, especially if it's been constantly worrying you because in the end, keep in mind that a lot of people might be experiencing this and you are not alone! And many people went through the same steps as you and probably got diagnosed in the end.I understand why you might feel ashamed, and I feel exactly the same thing in some situations, and in the end I realise that in reality, most people would not criticize you or blame you for anything.

As a child, they told me that 8 in the scale of Asperger’s was to be Autistic and I fell short. I had seven. What I didn’t know, (until social security asked me questions and told me that I was high functioning), was that I was a literal person who could go on meltdowns of crying when losing things where I couldn’t talk, and having practically every symptom of high-functioning Autism. My lack of looking at people and delayed language + my balance and issues with noise top it off. Yes I have sensory issues with touching bags, yes, I couldn’t be understood until nine, and yes they were teaching me sign language because of the big delay in language. Yeah, social security was right after me looking up and finding that I say things inappropriate at times and also have literal senses which don’t understand grey area. Like who would’ve known? I have it… yeah I am going to get tested very soon.

I am old enough to be your mother but I had a late Autism diagnosis. I know that sometimes I get in my head and worry about what the real diagnosis is. But the thing is, unless you feel like assistance in school or therapy will help you, sometimes you have to look at yourself and call it "me syndrome "a basically it means to focus on what will help you with the tasks that you need help with rather than going through life wondering "what is wrong with me?" Try to focus on what helps and yeah, talk to mom about your thoughts about why you are struggling and why you think you might be autistic. even if you aren't autistic it sound to me that you notice that you are different and that might just mean that you are neurodivergent. You are so young. Try to think about the accommodations you need instead of wondering what is wrong. When I was your age I spent so much time wanting to be perfect, feeling shame any time i made a mistake and i was highly ashamed to admit i have a learning disability. i focused so much on wondering what was wrong with me that it has taken me well into my adult years to change the focus of my thinking to "what will help me because i have this issues?" rather than "why can't i be normal like everyone else?" hope that helps!

I'm not diagnosed with autism, but other people around me think I have it, I also think I have it, and this really helps me a lot. I would love to see more tips and tricks, but I do have a couple for doing laundry or dishes, me personally I hate doing both of them, but trash, and cleaning doesn't really bother me much. The first tip is for doing laundry, so I have a system, and if it works for any of u, u can use it. So, when I'm doing laundry, I always have to keep everything in one spot, I am a minor, and my parents are separated, and I go to my dad's every other weekend, so my system is I keep the dirty clothes that I wear at my mom's in one basket, and my dad smokes, and my mom doesn't, so I keep the stinky clothes in a pile on the floor, and if I have to bring snacks and water to my dad's, I will not make the other snacks I have in my room stink, cuz then when I touch them, my hands are gonna stink and I hate that, so they stay by my stinky clothes from my dad's, they also DO NOT go in the same load at all. And the water I bring from my dad's, they stay in the bag they're in until the smell wears off. I also have to shower immediately after I get home from my dad's. Plus, this way, everything is all in one place, and I don't have to scavenge for all the dirty clothes. My grandma, who lives with us, always scatters her clothes all around her room and it drives me crazy, but luckily my mom keeps her dirty clothes in one place too, btw I do all the laundry when I'm with my mom cuz my mom and grandma can't cuz of health reasons. The second hack is for dishes, and when doing dishes, buy the silicone dish gloves from Walmart, cuz they've helped me so much. It's so much easier to wash the dishes, and I can wash them without touching whatever is on the plate. It helps so much, they're like 2 to 10 dollars at Walmart I think, it's worth it trust me. I have sensery issues with touching the food on the plates and stuff, and the gloves are so long it's impossible for my bare hands to touch the food, and I think they get clean better too idk. I also have sensery issues with too itchy clothes, too tight clothes, I like loose clothes personally, and if something I really really like at the store is supposed to be tight, I'll get it a couple sizes bigger, I don't mind. That's all I can think of right now though, if anyone has related tips along these topics, please share them below, I would like to know some more for laundry and dishes at least. And Morgan, please please please do tips and tricks for autism on laundry and dishes/household chores please

@@morgaanfoleythank you so much for the reply. The wet hair in the bonnet, is the sort of thing I would do 😂. I would appreciate some tips on eating, my variety, is let’s just say not very varied. 😂 I eat healthy and eat a balanced diet but probably need to get better at trying new things. Eg. I hate cheese but 70% of diners have it in. I’m kinda running out of options and I find it embarrassing to say to people to change something in the meal or say I don’t like that. I hope the toothbrush thing helped as well? It’s ok if it didn’t though, just thought it might be something you’d like to try maybe. 😊💜

@VioletSparxgacha Don't worry about asking for food accommodations wherever you are. I have food allergies, dairy included and I have to ask for changes in how meals are prepared almost every where I go. I used to feel bad about it until I realized that I too am entitled to eat food that doesn't cause me harm. You have every right to take care of yourself.

Thank you for this video! I have another tip for itchy clothing tags: if just cutting them doesn't help, take a small scissor (like the ones in nail care kits) and carefully cut the stitches around the edge of the tag. If this isn't possible, I usually put a bandaid on the itchy part. Hope this helps someone!♡

I'm also autistic, and something that has helped me with the cold sensation after getting out of the shower is having a small space heater plugged in! I just turn it on for my shower and the room is warm when I get out which definitely helps, and I bring the comfy clothes I want to wear after in there too so they're usually warmer from being in the space. Hope this helps! Edit: Also, using a tongue scraper has drastically helped me with bad breath - especially on the days where brushing my teeth is too much. Most of bad breath germs come from your tongue anyways, so it helps to scrape all the bacteria off and it isn't as bad as brushing my teeth. For flossing, I've found a waterpick/water flosser has been much less invasive, annoying, time consuming, and overall bad than little throw away floss picks. You refill it every time and it could also help to wash your mouth out with toothpaste taste after brushing.

I'm not autistic, but the routine, demand avoidance, and sensory issues hit hard for me too. In my case, white noise sort of numbs me, it makes me not pay attention to other stimuli (it can also help me focus, so not necessarily numb), and I've discovered that the WC extractor fan has the same effect, so it might help someone. Also, I'm 26 and just discovered the washcloth trick. Forever grateful.

I HATE being cold and wet. I hate it so much. Autism plays a role, but I also have some childhood trauma that I won't go into. I deal with this problem much better now than in the past. Two things: 1) keep the room warm; 2) focus on the outcome. My original strategy was to keep the room warm by letting it fill with steam. I keep the door shut, but also if there is a curtain, I'll keep that curtain closed until I'm dry. I pull the towel into the shower with me and dry completely before opening the curtain. My current strategy is to focus on the outcome. I know that I'm only a few moments away from being dry and warm again, plus I know that I am in control of the process, that I know the process, and that I know how long it will take. All of these things give me the fortitude to deal with a colder room when my bathing is done if I was unable to make it warm. I do still try to keep the room warm anyway, though. So I've recognized that this is actually the key to me doing a bunch of things. Most of the stuff that causes me to avoid or procrastinate is rooted in my insecurity regarding the details of dealing with the problem. I don't know exactly how, or maybe I don't know anything at all, and I don't know how long I'll have to deal with it before it's over, so all of that uncertainty leads to anxiety and executive dysfunction. It helps so much to have someone do it with me the first few times. So any activity we are expected to be able to do on our own is something people just assume that I don't need help doing, or are highly resistant or totally unwilling to do with me. Bathing I've learned to do for myself, thank goodness, but other stuff like filling out paperwork for a job application, signing other forms once I'm hired, doing taxes, planning grocery shopping, paying bills, washing dishes, washing clothes, changing bedsheets -- all of that stuff is very personal and peculiar. The hardest thing I've ever done is to recognize that I need help with something, ask for that help, and accept help when it is offered.

Your short hair as a child comment nearly had me in tears. My mom brought me to a hairdresser when I was a little girl and told them secretly to cut my hair really short, but she told me that they will only cut the tips of my hair. She could no longer deal with me crying while washing or brushing my hair. Well, after that traumatic event it took me over 25 years to get the courage to go to a hairdresser as an adult. Its still a big fear of mine they will do something to my hair I do not want, so I still go very rarely.

As an old southern lady I have to say this "bless your heart", meaning you are sweet and kind. I know anyone who is autistic or anyone who loves someone autistic can appreciate your videos. When you struggle with something that other people struggle with, and you let them know they are not alone, it is a huge comfort. My husband, who has never had an official diagnosis, has Asperger's. He insists he doesn't have it. He doesn't want to address it. The information you are providing helps me to understand what is going on with him and why he does certain things, like turn the space heater on in the bathroom when he showers, in July, in 100 degree weather, lol. It is funny to me. But, I can see that he cannot handle being cold when getting out of the shower. And, I'm like, but everyone gets a little cold until they get dried off. This video sure explains things for me. Not only does he suffer when I don't understand. But, I also suffer. Communication is so important. Especially, in a situation like this. We should all be able to communicate our needs. Thanks for the wonderful video.

I put all of my basic hygiene stuff in a box in my living room so I can sit on the couch and do it while I'm watching TV. Having it nearby and accessible in a place I'm more comfortable and not having to go into another room has been a game changer for me! Also, kind of a weird hack, if I focus on the sensory issues I experience from not brushing my teeth (mainly the gross feeling of plaque on my teeth), it gets easier to clean my teeth. I also use dental picks so I don't have to stick my hand in my mouth and get saliva all over my hands. Also, I use a thing called the D-Plak-R pick holder and it essentially is a tool that holds half of a round toothpick and you use that to trace your gum line, but I've also found it's much more enjoyable sensory wise to rub a toothpick on my teeth to get the plaque off than it is to brush my teeth. I still brush my teeth after, but I can be way less thorough than I was before I started doing this so it takes a lot less time and I still get super clean teeth. Hope some of these tips help!

I hate being cold and wet too. If I washed my hair, I would just let it dry by itself, it feels good to me that way. But I don't know how you can do the curly thing with your hand so patiently, I can't never really master anything about blowing dry my hair in parts or how to use a flat iron in my hair, dividing my hair then one by one straighten my hair or giving it like a shape. It was just too much for me, I just go to the beauty salon if I want to get my hair done or cutting. I never really mastered anything about hairstyles, I just went with a ponytail or a bun. My family always criticized me. because of that. I just never understood it to trying by myself. I feel overwhelmed and anxious. I guess is a sensory thing. Thank you for the video, it really has helped me.

A lot of your struggles with brushing teeth and hair and such are extremely similar to me. A lot of your videos are similar to my experiences. Small tip for the tags for clothing. Instead of using scissors, get a seam ripper. It’s easier, safer, and it makes it so you are less likely to cut a hole or leave the sharp nasty bit of tag behind.

For flossing, all floss are Not born equal! Thicker floss tape for me is so so much better than thin stuff that feels like it'll cut me. The tape feels genuinely good & satisfying to use, to the point that I'll often use it twice. Also floss doubles as a tongue scraper (great for bad breath) at the end (gets rid of a bathroom item to keep track of & ties the two tasks together). Just hold ends wrapped around index fingers pinched with thumb, leading towards the middle stretched over the extended middle fingers, bit like a middle finger finger gun. Then drag the middle down from the back of your tongue to the front

one of my tips and tricks is to bring a stool into the bathroom! i use it for literally everything: when i bring a fidget and need to put it down quick, when im washing my face/brushing teeth i sit on it, and i use it for my clean clothes outside the shower. having the option to sit significantly improved my ability to brush my teeth and wash my face

The wet cloth thing! how come have I lived all my life without thinking about this? 💕 Thank you, I’ll try it. I also struggle with brushing my teeth. What helped me was doing it methodically, I brush 8 times from the gum out, my toothbrush covers 2 teeth so then I move to the next two. Always the upper front side teeth first, then the down front side, then the back side of them first upper then down. This helped me brush them properly, to not damage my gums and to make it easier so I do it more often. Regarding the suggestions, I would love to see a “draw my life”, I know that trend is ancient but I thinks is a great and lovely way to introduce someone. 💕

Showering tip if you're noise sensitive - earplugs! I use loop earplugs, and I hadn't realised how much the noise of a shower puts me off actually doing it (decibel-wise it's actually quite loud). At the moment I'm also using micellar water (wiping face with tissue) instead of washing my face in the sink, because I'm being put off by the water feeling. Dry shampoo for the days I just can't bring myself to shower. Or a sink shower.

Cold bathroom -> put a towel to block the gap under the door. Prevents heat escaping. This works for me and i end up staying in the bathroom longer. And/Or get a small plug in heater for the bathroom. Or light a candle you like. Hair: Shower cap-> you dont have wash your hair every shower. For teeth: i use a dental metal pick and follow my gums. Then brush. Its fun for me. Smell bothers me the most. I dont wear make up. Hate how it feels on my skin. Argan oil is the only product i use for my hair and skin.

Good job and thank you for sharing your struggles Morgan. Hygiene is such a part of western culture and there’s definitely a LOT of pressure on people to constantly be as clean as possible. I’m very sensitive to smells so if any part of my body has any unpleasant odor, I will freak out. But I also HATE showering and as someone who has the privilege to have running water and a nice showering environment (especially in Alaska), I don’t shower nearly as much as people say to. When I was young I’d go a week or more without showering but once I went through puberty I couldn’t do that anymore. Now it’s a constant struggle between not wanting to smell and showering and I’ve found myself trying to hide the fact that I don’t shower for 3-4 days most of the time from people because they do think it’s gross. Showering is a long process and takes me usually an hour or more which is so annoying. I too hate lotion and usually forgo that in favor of being dry as a desert. But if it’s really bad, I’ll put coconut oil on my body instead of lotion because it’s thinner and dries faster. Also wet hair… I just HATE wet hair. But I’m also the person who HATES the blow dryer because of the sound and the air blowing on my skin. So I usually have to braid my hair after I shower. (Also thank you for lowering the volume in the video when you had the blow dryer going if that’s what you did) I love your washcloth idea. That MAKES ME SO HAPPY. I’m 24 and haven’t thought about that so thank you. I hope everyone can figure out little ways to make yourself feel clean that are easier for you. It’s definitely a process.

Thanks for the video! I'm always glad to see autists share their experiences. It helps to hear what others have to say, and see people struggle with stuff that I struggle with. It normalizes our experiences as autists, because many of these experiences are normal for us, even if they're not normal for allistic people. You could just keep making videos in this theme for awhile and I'm happy to watch. I think after you've done that for a time, you may get a sense of what else you'd want to talk about on your channel.

But I am now 25 and only recently really accepting and working with the fact I have ASD. I find so much comfort, help, and realizations in your videos. It reminds me that 90% of the things I do or don't do aren't because I'm "defective" but because I'm neurodovergent.

I just picked up watermelon toothpaste today! Along with fruit flavored floss sticks. Because it just occurred to me this weekend that there is no rule saying that I have to use adult toothpaste! But the number 1 thing that has helped me with the sensory aspect of brushing my teeth is using a super soft toothbrush- one of those “20,000 micro nano bristles” kind. It just isn’t as scratchy or aggravating.

Hi, Morgan! I am also a late diagnosed autistic. Thank you for your videos. 😊 I always cut off the tags on my clothes. But after a few years, I realized that the ends became sharper, so I tried to condition myself to stop thinking about it. Most of the time, it works, but if I am nervous that day and can't stop thinking about it, it is terrible.

Thank you so much for spreading awareness, I used to have a completely different thought on Autism and it felt a bit weird for me because I could not understand how it feels to be autistic and what it is exactly. And back when I was in sixth grade, we had a class of a few kids with autism, and just because one of them seemed different from the others, it made me think that he is normal and that he should be in a normal class but now I know I shouldn't have judged too early

I was diagnosed with autism when I was 7 and since I was a kid, my routine support is putting up visuals of my shower routine and creating stations. I printed out and laminated pictures of my shower routine and suction cup them to the wall of my shower. I usually use a bathtub soap crayon to X out what I've done so I don't keep repeating the same task over and over. CREATING STATIONS TOO Example: my toothbrush and toothpaste are in my bedroom and I have a lightbulb that turns a certain color at a certain time of the day that lets me know "hey, its time to brush my teeth" or. "hey its time to take my vitamins" I usually keep all those things in a crate or basket and the lightbulb is set to change into the color of those baskets when it's time to use them.

I have psoriasis so if I don't shower every morning I feel disgusting it can ruin my day. My skin is very sensitive and is therefore a sensory overload trigger for me. I also struggle with brushing my teeth so in the morning I actually brush while showering which makes it way less of a demand as I don't have to worry about making a mess, but before bed I have to pump myself up for brushing. Also since skin is a sensory issue for me I have to have a fan blow on me after I shower to evaporate the water because the humidity causes pretty uncomfortable sensory issues on my skin. I have to be completely dryed off before I get dressed after I shower. Thankfully some of my family have caught on to this habbit and usuall leave a fan in the bathroom for me when I come visit haha! I didn't even say anything! Appreciate what people do for you when you are t looking!

Brushing my teeth is also the hardest on my sensory issues. I've been too embarrassed to try kids toothpaste but... maybe I should go for it. Having an electric toothbrush helps a lot, too. Requires less harsh brushing. It also makes noise every thirty seconds and it gives me a solid time marker that is oddly motivating and helps me get to between 1 and 2 minutes every time.

I have avoided using any products for so long because I thought the thought of having something on my face would be unnerving. Yet skin care turned out to be pretty relaxing to me. Brushing my teeth has ALWAYS been a struggle for me, I hate the sound, the taste and the feel but a couple years ago I tried an electric toothbrush and it has been a game changer! I do not hear the brushing sound anymore either with my body or my ears (as you know, us autistic peeps feel sound through our bodies, not just hear it in our ears) and it feels different so it's so much easier to manage now. Thank you for sharing your videos, my brother and I share them with each other regularly and both find them a bit of a comfort to see ourselves visible in what you share 😁

In the cold ass months, I can only do it once a week because being confined in the inside shower freaks me out. Also try dhc oil for your face. Sensory wise it feels freaking amazing. Hi! I don’t have a diagnosis for autism and or adhd but I’m learning a lot about it and it’s really been helping me. For the shower thing, I take baths, mostly, or when I shower I try to keep the water really hot, because somehow the burning sensation helps managing the wet and slimy skin sensation. Also somehow I usually manage my issue with brushing my teeth (hate the foam in my mouth) by brushing them really fast and hard and using a lot of water. I might repeat the process if I think I didn’t clean them well but it helps. Unfortunately kid toothpaste makes me nauseous. I was thinking about switching to electric toothbrush but I’m really not sure because I feel like I might hate it 😅. Anyway, love your channel! ❤

Autistic Adult: For Brushing my teeth. I use Listerine Ultraclean, Cool Mint, mouthwash before brushing to override the taste and texture of the toothpaste. I also use a sensitive toothpaste and brush with my SonicCare toothbrush. Somedays the the mouth wash is too strong, but it overpowers the taste of the toothpaste, so I deal with it! I use floss with individual plastic holders, with no flavor added. This thankfully keeps my time in the dentist chair relatively short, even though it’s still torture! 😱 The hardest part of taking a shower, for me, is that it takes me a lonnnng time to cool down after a shower. I run hot, and getting dressed after a shower in a hot bathroom isn’t fun! 🙄
