Austistic burdens can be mediated by finding that thing that can drive the patients to be proactive and self sustaining despite IQ. They can be intuitive beyond average or artistic to a prodigal degree. Yes it can be difficult but certainly be a blessing if you try in that aspect. Things take time. See the potential and remenber how valuable it is for autistic folk to drive their own vehicle so to speak.

@@marybarbera I know how taxing it can be the families of those with Non NT folk and can see why some may see it as a blessing and curse or one more than the other. Trust me that once you find that thing that compels the loved one it will be much easier. It will always be a bit demanding but less physically demanding once they find their niche. Navigation is the best approach. Instead of taking the car keys and deiving the car for them take the approach of being a voice navigation without recourse and positive reenforcement if the loved on responds to it constructively. Just be patient and know you might genuinely be blessed you just have to give it time. There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. Thanks for sharing your experience though it did give me an idea as to how parents might deal with such conditions.

I enjoyed your video - the thing that concerns me is they base the IQ score on the amount of services/care etc. of the child. So the IQ score if under 70 gives your child more care from outside agencies - the importance of IQ scores is very much is important to seek out for your child otherwise services for your child will be less.

My daughter was about 4.5 when finally potty trained but she still has accidents when she comes from dads home because I’m in top of her, her dad isn’t. I was completely potty trained after my 5 years old.

The School said my Son's IQ is 70, he is Autistic. However I don't believe that. He is very intelligent. He can crack codes to the refrigerator. If he applies himself, there isn't anything he can't do. If he isn't interested in something, he apllies zero effort. So I am not sure how the School was even able to get an accurate IQ test

Your son is definitely NOT unintelligent . Genuinely successful people are not plugged into the system and they don’t blindly follow directions for the sake of following directions. They go their own way and engage in selective learning all of the time. The school system is just designed to make compliant, tax paying 9-5 employees out of children who become the average person earning 50K/year in the midst of inflation. This system has no interest in helping your child become the best possible version of him/herself. Get your son out of the school system if you can and turn to a system called “unschooling” to tap into his own unique, hidden talents. He will thrive and flourish.

Our daughter is 27, Autistic and has an IQ of 50-55. She doesn't like talking about her problems and refuses services as she thinks that she doesn't have any issues. So, since she refuses services, our local mental health refuses also. They said even though we think she needs help, she is their client and they have to respect her wishes. I'm like, are you serious? So no help, no respite. What do we do now? We have full guardianship. We have went to counseling as her parents to help us deal with some issues, but she really needs the help Any advice is appreciated!

Much the same here with my teen. I signed up for "family" counseling. My daughter hung around while I chatted about issues, and daughter popped in when she felt like it. This has worked well.

My uncle was diagnosed with encephalopathy and was hyperactive as a child. He is diagnose with intellectual disability, but he has other symptoms like he likes to lock doors in his house all the time, and he has echolalia and some think that he gets overwhelmed by noises, but where still trying to figure it out. Do you think that sounds like autism with a mix intellectual disability? I’m just curious if others think it may be autism too. He also walks around the house with a radio, but idk if that sounds like autism. Thanks helpful video.

They said that I was 6 I was mildly mentally retarded, but I just found out that I was suffering from mdd and now I'm on medication for it. They also helped my cognitive skills as well. Maybe my depression me me look intellectually impaired

What can I do at home to help him, bcoz Indian govt don't provide any aid to special kids. The therapy here is very expensive. I really feel my son has intellectual disability. I am not worried about studies but his cognitive ability is low.

Hi, I am from India. Here getting a proper diagnosis is very difficult. If I go to autism clinic they will diagnose him with autism, if to a psychologist he will say something else. Is there any tool where I can tell where I can check whats my sons diagnosis is? He is 8 now.

You can't recover from Autism as you don't have too. Autism is another type of brain and all you need to do for an Autistic person is to understand Autism, not cure it and it is not a disease. Autistic people need support as they struggle with things and I recommend researching on Autism

Very interesting. A lot of people seem confused by putting autism and ID into the same bucket. At the end of the day, IMO, it just comes down to how much support is required, right? I would have thought prior to elementary aged, the term developmental delay would have been more appropriate, and IQ in and of itself, really doesn't matter until 2nd or 3rd grade. Wouldn't the IQ scores be skewed downward on a 3 year old who is on the autism scale? Wouldn't an IQ score be skewed in some manner in a neurotypical child? I have had 4 kids, 5 grandkids, and every single kid advanced through their milestones in their own time, and turned out great. Just seems to be treading on dangerous roadways labelling a child so young. It really just seems like a child jumping on a merry go round. Most will make it, some require that nudge to make sure they get on, but once on, and "lights go on", so to speak, and soon, they are on the journey of life long learning. I don't completely agree with you. Some children's intellectual delays are so obvious that getting an early diagnosis can be very beneficial and would mean getting more help/services sooner. My child, for example, is 6 years old and needs help with dressing/undressing, can't be around anything that is a potential choking hazard because he still puts things in his mouth, still doesn't understand that he needs to tell me when he has to go potty even though I have been telling him to do that over and over again for a number of years now, can't play simple games designed for children 3 years and up because they go over his head, would eat crumbs off of the floor if I didn't vacuum after every meal, etc. Not to mention, needing special locks on my front door and backyard gates to prevent him from exploring the neighborhood on his own. He has no safety awareness skills, unfortunately. With that said, my son's intellectual delay, like others like him, is so obvious that an IQ test is only going to confirm what's already understood. Unfortunately, my son has not been officially diagnosed yet, but I am in the process of trying to get him tested for it, so he can have more services available to him. So, no, at least in my child's case, it would be very beneficial to get him diagnosed with ID (intellectual disability) a lot sooner than 2nd or 3rd grade. Heck, I couldn't even begin to tell you when he is even going to be able to reach that academic level. 🙁 I really hope he does, though.

But what do they call pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified now? There is a mention of that somewhere in papers filed with the SSA for me. Of course I get a copy of all of that before it is sent in. I highly recommend scanning it since paper can be lost, misplaced or destroyed by various things. I got my scanner on eBay for $50 used and it has a feeder so I don't have to do it one sheet at a time which would take ages!! Just make sure the one you choose is not listed as broken or something and that you can find drivers for it. There may be a rare case where the only driver is for an ancient version of Windows! Also how does autism relate to other things like ADD, ADHD and asperger's? I know sometimes symptoms overlap and one symptom could be a sign of multiple disorders. Really you would have to have a conversation with me to pick up on the fact that there is a mental disorder. It doesn't physically show itself except I don't always pay attention or appear to. I have a short attention span and if I met you today I may forget about you by the end of the day quite easily. I don't mean anything by it, I just might not remember you or there are things I don't always remember. I have a 98 year old grandmother who is worse off. She would forget in 5 minutes as if you never existed!

In 2016 I had a diagnosis from a mental health center of intellectual disability and then I don't know if I have any ASD at this time because I'm having a thorough testing season 4 hours psychological testing at a neurologist office November 30th at 11:00 a.m. I will get the results December 14th on a Wednesday also at 11:00 a.m. I do have Medicaid waiver services they caregivers boss of caregivers behavior specialist case manager a friend of mine mentioned Indiana governor's council for people with disabilities but I haven't heard anything back from them email or by phone also my behavior specialist told me tonight and I should look into self-advocacy groups I did find online groups to them as well as a group near me in Merrillville Indiana as I am in the Hammond Indiana I'm 65 years old as of July 10th and I have two younger sisters loving and supportive would it be possible for me to have both idd and ASD???
