Autism And Object Attachment, are these fixations on objects unhealthy? Hi indie people, in today's video I talk about object attachment that autistic people have on inanimate objects. I talk about what object attachment is, how autistic people can become fixated on objects. But also talking about if these object attachments in adults are healthy?

I work at a place where we have a bunch of random stuff. So there was this strange looking cat figurine that I grew a strong random attachment to it. Some kid wanted him so when they checked out, the kid threw it at the plexiglass and I felt a great amount of pain when the figurine hit the glass and landed on the floor. It felt like my heart just completely broke.

My husband learned not to give my galaxy n3dsxl to our butterfinger child after he broke dad's cartridge slot..caught him in the act of handoff! I don't even want hubs sweaty grubby dead skin hands on my gaming mouse, he cruds it up. His beard hair sideburns already tore up my wireless headphones he borrowed without asking cuz he needed it for his game after the first pair I let him have stopped working because he is too rough and doesn't treat any object with care or respect!

I'm autistic and I've always been very attached to objects throughout my life, mainly stuffed toys. The weirdest one was a pencil sharpener. My main comfort often get damged as she goes everywhere with me and is often squished into a pocket or small bag (she's not pocket sized) but luckily I am very good at sewing and can repair her when needed (she also get's "upgrades" like new hair when the old wool is to damaged or dirty)

I haven't been diagnosed (I think I have Autism & ADHD) but I'm 15 and I've had kept my stuffed animals since I was a kid. Tuff Ruff, Freddy and Fred- and I have a snowman naked Snowball/Snowy. I have an obsession with book collecting. I love books- the smell of them, how they look and feel- I like biting them sometimes too. 😅

This was an instant like, I am EXTREMELY attached to my plushies, I have that same Pikachu build-a-bear! Not only do I give them names and sleep with them at night, but I also have a lot of plushies with scents! Hugging something soft that smells like honey is my happy place :D Thanks for making this video! I really like Larry and Henry, they look well loved! It was reassuring to see an older autistic person also attached to stuffed animals, and hearing that it was common!

Aww wow thank you so much! Yeah it's something I've had planned to talk about for awhile but I wasn't sure if I felt comfortable talking about it. But it shouldn't be such a weird way to talk about you know. But it's also great how you are comfortable with yourself so it definitely helps me for sure talking about this. IndieAndy I’m so glad you got out of your comfort zone to talk about this subject, it’s something that we shouldn’t be ashamed of!! I highly recommend looking around for scented plushies, they’re the best!! I’d recommend looking online, but I totally understand the risk of your new plush arriving in the mail, only for the scent to not be what you thought! There are also places that sell fabric scent pouches that you can put into your own plushies, but you do have to do a little bit of stuffie surgery which isn’t always for the faint at heart, haha. Anyways, thanks for doing what you do!! Your videos are fantastic, I love how organized and relaxing your videos are! Keep up the awesome work :)

very cool hearing an adult w/ ASD articulate the fixation so well. I just see it unfold w/ my 11 year old. At the moment - it's an Iron Maiden cd collection. But the though of him being able to explain it to me one day is exciting! Nice job Andy.

Think if someone has an attachment, it's clear and also the excitement/enjoyment they get from this stuff is clear as well for everyone to enjoy 👍 Maybe he'll be able to explain it himself some day but as long as his happy then that's the main thing 👍 Hope you are well!

this video made me feel better, i have asd, low functioning/ level 2.5 whatever terms they use these days, ive been realyl attached to stuffed animals, stuffed animal keychains, they cover my backpack, lol, i even like things that arent meant for my age but for kids and or babies, never undertood it have always had a fixate on it, i thougth i was crazy and weird and something wasnt right, but it makes me happy i feel better, i had this bear since age 15 he was a big soft bear, weird make as it was made wrong arms longer then body but cute, named him charlie brown, he wnet every where with me, huged when i cried and slept and everything, lost him at age 20, i tend to collect stuffed animals even to the point if i find one on side of roads or lodt in the trees or any where lost i call it a rescue and i take htem home wash them and give them love, to me in my mind toy story is real, i cant explaine it. for years i wondered if me liking baby stuff and toys and sippy cups was cuz i didnt have a childhood but even grown up i need these itams, so thank u for putting some light on this and making my day. love ur lamas by the way, i just recured a little cute pink pig from the train tracks, lol

i found an itty bitty boo dog just outside my house in the rain on my way to school when i was 16. looked like a child had him for a while because all his fluffy fur was cut off. this was when gcses were going on so it was stressful at that time and i didn’t have a friend in that school year so i had no one to study with at school. i put him in my backpack and by the time i got home, he’d soaked my pocket of my backpack. put him in my washing machine without my mum knowing and was surprised i was only washing my blanket which i also put in there and made me add other things in the washing machine. i was embarrassed to tell her! watched the washing machine spin and waiting impatiently for the cycle to finish and then quickly dried him for his first night with me in bed. still not diagnosed yet. 🥺

I'm not medically diagnosed as autistic (maybe self-diagnosed?), but I've always been emotionally attached to plushies since I was a child. I lost my childhood plush (bunny with a bowtie) and blue cloud blanket somewhere along the way growing up. Now that I'm an adult, I'm adopting plushie rabbits. Rabbits are my favorite animal. Among the five plush rabbits I have (so far) is an Asexuality bunny that I named Ace. I got him after realizing I'm asexual. :3

I'm mostly attached to this random rock I've found near my dentist's building, when I was 8 years old. Now I'm 22 and it's still next to my bed and I take it to all of my vacations, trips etc. Her name is Chloé and back then I really treated her like a pet. I used to bathe her, make her her own tiny beds, take her with me everywhere I go and so on. I'd rather throw out my iPad than throwing out Chloé. (Excuse my bad English, I'm from Germany)

I relate to this. I've always attached meaning to very ordinary objects like a hair tie I've found while traveling or a rock a child gave me when I was a camp counsellor. It has a bit of story around it, but it's not sentimental in itself because I have more meaningful memories from those events that are not at all related to the objects. I struggle a lot, especially, to get rid of objects given to me from loved ones even if I don't find any use for the objects. Sometimes, they even become irritating to have cause I only want object that have a purpose in my life (either sentimental meaning or practical use) and there's that pile of whatever that I can't get rid of because it's a thing someone gave me for no reason. A good trick I have is to take a picture of the thing before deciding to get rid of it as a replacement of the idea of that object. It makes it easier to detach from it if I know I can look at the picture to remind me I had it once. Also, those Llamas are freaking adorable 😍

Sometimes they can go a bit off topic and why they are talking about isn’t what’s on screen. But I have found out things about certain films and shows that I would not have known about otherwise. This video was also an instant like for me, as I've always loved my stuffies since I was a kid. Even now, as an adult woman who should be well past the age of being attached to them, I find them very comforting, especially as I live alone. My stuffies. . Woodstock, Nemo, Dory, and the many others that sleep right by me comfort me. In fact, I've been known to have some in my tote bag (instead of a purse), because it's comforting knowing they're there with me at work. Pretty much me in a nutshell, I hate having to get rid of stuff and I often end up feeling really guilty when I do. One of the stupid things I keep hold of for no real reason is the first 2 star wars films on VHS which I got at a car show around a year or 2 ago, they were the unaltered versions and they (technically are the only versions of those particular films I have since I refuse to buy the Blu Ray set since I only want the original versions and not the mucked around with versions. I still have a video recorder so I can watch them but I can't since they don't work at all, (they were only around 50p each) I was dead gutted and yet I still kept hold of them. This also applies when I upgrade some films from DVD to Blu Ray, even though the DVD version is poor by comparison I still feel guilty about having to get rid of it. This applies to a lot of other things (even to an extent packaging for some items but not to a ridiculous sense like keeping packaging for food or empty bottles). I initially thought I had developed some kind of hoarder mentality but that is no longer the case at all since I'm on the spectrum. Cheers mate.

Ooh yeah I was the same about my VHS tapes of Star Wars (I love Star Wars, always have since I was a kid). We visited the Doctor Who Experience in Wales 3 times with two of them in the same month (certain events going on like cosplay (that was brilliant!)), even had some Cyberman tech stuck on my face :P Since the new one came along it's a pile of poo. Not because she's female (I was looking forwards to that) but because Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall decided to go all virtue signalling, self righteous and SJW! Completely destroyed a series that had been running for 50 years (I went to he the huge event in London for that too and almost got a job!)! Sorry, it WAS a BIG part of my life (my room will still soon be covered in posters an the models I've collected over the years as we've fairly recently moved into a new place, but none of the 13th Doc). Fingers crossed once they go away after this next season we might get some decent actor and stories...hopefully :P

I've watched this video so many times, but I don't think I've ever commented on it. I have attachments to various item, and I find it hard to get rid of things. I found that it was really hard for me to get rid of things when I moved into my own place. I even have talked to my fiancé about it, and he says I should keep them if they are important or if they help me. I've also become very attached to this deck of Cat Tarot card set. I actually have three sets of the same deck because I'm always afraid of not having it so I keep one in my bag, one in my bedroom and one that just is free floating I need it. My parents don't understand the object attachments that I have. I also have object attachments to stuffed animals as well, but those I mostly only use when I am in meltdown or in panic attacks. I have Autism, ADHD, sever anxiety, OCD, PTSD, among many other issues (the list is far too long, LOL). I find watching videos about this topic very comforting as it reminds me that I am not alone in this, and that I'm not "crazy".

when i was younger, i had a lot of soft toys and gave each of them names: princess the baby poodle, blueberry the blue poodle who was a hand me down from a family friend’s daughter, spotty the dalmation, pinky also a poodle (my fav from when i was 6 who i thought i would have forever) and cuddles the tiny bear who could fit in a pocket and other teddy bears. my little sister threw pinky down the stairs and one of her eyes fell out and my little cousin was so rough with me, he tore off one of blueberry’s legs with his teeth. my mum made me throw them all away because she simply didn’t like the sight of them. she’ll see one of them and throw them to the ground. i was forced to put them in a bag and in the bin when i was 12 years old and i cried my eyes out so much and couldn’t stop thinking about them. i thought i could get them back but i couldn’t. i also remember collecting hair bows and wearing them to match the colour of what outfit i wore each day. everyone around me would just stare and ask me constantly why i wear them at 16/17 years old. my dad never liked what i wore and would make me go change my clothes so my mum would have to pick what i wear when i go out with my family not anymore since im 19 now. i loved the loom band trend and fidget spinners. but for some reason, i wasn’t allowed a fidget spinner and everyone at school had them and i didn’t end up getting one until the trend was over and i ended up losing it. i want one now and loom bands. i also liked collecting rocks i dont know why 😅 im not even diagnosed yet! i now have two soft toys: paddington the bear who was part of a birthday/valentine gift & cloud the pomeranian 🥰

Very interesting video and yes this is something I got really angry about with the parent of an autistic child about. Long story short he had a set of headphones that he was very attached to. Not just because they helped him filter out noises, but because they were a gift and also for the reason you mentioned here about Autistic Attachment. When another child broke those headphones, the boy pretty much went into meltdown and it took a long time to get him out of this. The mother only made things worse by slapping him, calling him a spoilt brat and telling him " To stop throwing a hissy fit you, prima donna! " As you can Imagine I went absolutely ballistic. " Now is not the time to be an arse, your son is having a meltdown and needs you. So for *f"£$ sake start being a parent! " Or words to that effect lol. I explained to her as did a few others about autistic attachment but she just wasn't having it, unfortunately. Poor kid!
