@@arianewinter4266i know this isn't helpful if you don't already have a job, but something i'm doing right now is applying to jobs while i have a job and knowing that i'm not desperate and can negotiate with employers has helped a lot. when i was on my own first applying to jobs after i had just had to drop out of college after a suicide attempt (lol), i didn't have any confidence and i didn't even know i was autistic. i didn't want to lie either and i also didn't know what was appropriate to ask. don't ask them if your interview went well or if you're a good candidate (learned through experience lol). don't look for reassurance in the interview. and something that i'm doing is asking what accomodations if any could be made for me because i'm autistic. that's the biggest one. just get the autism out of the way in the interview so they know immediately what problems it might cause. i know disclosing anything about a marginalized identity can lead to you not getting hired because companies are not "equal opportunity employers" regardless of if they say they are or not, but this automatically weeds out any companies that would think badly of you for being autistic right out of the gate. if you can't disclose in the interview that you're autistic then they will probably treat you badly later on when they find out the hard way you're autistic. it takes a lot of bravery and obviously if you don't already have a job and you're desperate for one this isn't super helpful, but i hope it helps you in the future.

I think it's a very NT thing to just assume people know why you're upset and proceed with that assumption. Having someone empathetically ask "Hey, may I ask what I did that upset you so I can prevent this from happening in the future" probably sounds funky to them because they believe you should already know. In reality, no one (or, at least, no one I know of) is a mind reader or able to guess how someone's feeling with 100% accuracy. I think your approach to things is the ideal way to go, communicating openly and clearly, perhaps neurotypical folks just haven't realized how beneficial it is yet.

Most people Like assumingnyou are the issue instead of aknowlaging, that they themselfs Had any Part in IT, so yeah, people are confused If you ask cause upsetting someone gets usually read AS Not caring or intentionaly and Not Like, a misunderstanding. Many also never think about the hows and whys of their upset and If WE are talking about someone autistic, since struggles with emotional regulating and communicating emotions IS a huge Part of the diagnosis you are exlpicitly asking for something they are unlikely to BE capable of giving. Yeah, as a PDAer, I really resent that my parents and teachers tried to teach me self care/maintenance/upkeep stuff via authoritarian whip-cracking. I interpreted it as purely a power trip, like it wasn't something I actually needed to do, just a way for them to assert dominance and control. So, I ended up neglecting myself a lot when the source of domination went away. Because of their shitty teaching style, I had to learn basic life skills the hard way as an adult, when the consequences are more severe and it's much harder to train behaviors to an "auto pilot" level. Even now, it's hard to think of these tasks as something that I'm doing "for me".

i never understood parents like that. i'm not a parent but if my kid struggled with this stuff, like say brushing their teeth, instead of yelling at them or bossing them around or hounding them to do it, i'd say "how about we do it together" that way they could watch me brush mine with them and know that it wasn't a punishment, it's something mom has to do as well, and it's not to harm them. i had a cousin that was raised with self care being that whip-cracking thing. it dawned on me when i stayed with them that of course he doesn't want to shower or brush his teeth because he never sees his parents doing those things. they'd always close their bedroom door and do their self care after he'd gone to bed. asking him to do self care he'd feel singled out and like it was punishment. he never heard "mom's off to the shower" or was perchered up on the counter to watch dad shave or brush his teeth. he never was sat on the floor of the bathroom with a coloring book while mom ran a brush through her hair. i think it's important for kids to see their parents taking care of themselves. kids model what they see, after all.

@promisemochi Oh, wow! So true! I still have some memories of my childhood when my aunt would ask us girls and the boys to meet her at her bedroom or her bathroom. We each took turns doing each other's hair, and the boys were taught sewing and mending. Same for us girls. We would just sit on the floor, sometimes, while aunt Clarisa got ready for her date with uncle. She let us do our hair, makeup, color our nails, brush our teeth and floss. My uncle also instilled some good hygiene care and boy-to-girl manners and other 'girly topics', which made them feel uncomfortable. Lol! Now that aunt Clarisa is gone my guy cousins and my adopted sister are excellent young adults and parents. And I learned the fun way how to feel confident in my own skin and in front of my peers, makeup or no makeup. It wasn't until I turned 31 and uncle Maurice turned 60 yrs that I told him of my diagnosis and a big hug for all the love and teachings over the years. We sometimes as young adults forget to say thank you to our guardians. Sure, they aren't perfect but they tried to teach things the hard way or tge easy way in the best they could. ✌️

Printers are absolutely hateful machines. What really underlines it for me is that my 3D printer - a class of device which was only invented 10 years ago, and only designed for hobbyist-hacker types - is orders of magnitude more reliable than any of the bastard paper printers I've ever owned. That shouldn't even be possible.
@PhotonBeast

It's more or less by design (as in, there's been investigations and I think lawsuits on some of the practices of printer companies). The reality is, there was a few decades in time when printers were an incredibly lucrative market. But much like dedicated GPS devices, as the surrounding technologies advanced, the niche they filled became quickly obsolete outside of commerical businesses. For the average person nowadays, we so rarely need to print something because most things are digital. And when we do need to print something (which can be literally once a year), it's cheaper to spend the dollar + travel cost to go to an Office Depot (or whatever) than it is to have a 100 dollar printer 'just in case' eg you'd need to print 100 pieces of paper to match teh value of just going to Office Depot.

I think the idea is to reframe a perceived strength as a weakness. I never understood it either, but I’d probably, if I could follow my own damn script, turn hyper focus from a weakness into a strength as it I’m not turned off a task because of how hard it, how much I don’t like to it, how no one else seems to have the patience for these things. I can’t do it though. Everytime, my mind goes blank and i forget my script. I suck at interviews. Crippling anxiety, social anxiety, and incredibly self conscious about being the center of attention AND being judge… to the point I’m dripping in sweat, my body is trying to shake, and if I can get my mouth to work my mouth goes dry or the words just fail to form in my brain and I say the wrong words.

"They never want to discuss what triggered you. Just how you reacted". This is soooo relatable an unfair. I have been in very unfair or absurd situations originated for something very stupid or unfair or inaproppiate from someone else. They NEVER acknowledge it. They just judge me. Specially if my mother was the one creating this situation (but also in other scenarios). That was a thing even in therapy (with the therapist that NEVER mentioned autism during many years I trusted her). I hate that so much. Even if their action was a huge problem and my reaction was just a little unpleasant, they focus on me... My guess is that most of the time they see "normal person" (NT) vs "weird person" (ND) and of course they prefer an a**hole that is NT over the ND that is trying their best...

There is a truth to it. You can't actually do anything about some stuff, and to linger your mind on it can be unhealthy, because in the end, it wont give you the ability to change it. It's kinda like "God give me the strength to change what i can, the willpower to accept what I cannot , and the intelligence to see which is which". Which isn't terrible advice. That being said, yeah, sometimes you're just reacting to what others are doing, and they're the problem. And it's pretty lame of thrm to just brush things off like that.

3:58 The annoying thing about ready made meals like freeze dried and frozen food is that they sometimes just randomly change the recipe. And the cheaper it is, the more likely they will do so; because very cheap stuff has tiny margins so saving a half a cent here and there by changing ingredients to something "equivalent" that is cheaper makes sense. If they make a change they assume people will notice they will sometimes slap a "new and improved" on it; but if the change is supposed to be equivalent like changing one kind of oil for another they probably won't even need to change the packaging (because it just says "vegetable oil" in the ingredients list for instance); but we tend to be rather sensitive so we probably notice the changes more than they expect. And in this case; they might simply have gotten a batch of tomatoes that is more or less ripe than usual making it taste more "tomatoey", so it might not even be a deliberate change; or they may have changed tomato variety for price or availability reasons.

this is also why you should always give customer service 5/5 or 10/10 or if you got bad service just don't rate them at all. a negative review is weighed much more heavily than no review. please don't vindictively rate customer service workers badly if they are rude or aren't the best or your order was wrong or whatever. if you've ever worked customer service for anything you already know why, but these reviews are directly related to their pay, their employment at all, like they can get fired, their meetings with their bosses. at every call center job i've had my boss has sat me down to go over each negative review i had and ask me how i could do better to not have that review. it is hell on earth it is awful. please for the love of god if you care about other people at all, do not leave bad reviews. unless you interacted with management. then dunk on their boss as hard as you possibly can.

Oh! I figured out an answer to the “what’s your greatest weakness?” But also I’m not the best at interviewing. BUT just plan to tell a story about “how you overcame a challenge in your life”. I think they want to know your problem solving skills and not really your weaknesses. Hope this helps someone!
@kittyr6534
@kittyr6534 3 ай бұрын
I think you are right and that question is an opportunity to talk about how you deal with things that are difficult/ a challenge for you. As someone who works in HR tho, I think it’s a stupid question. If you want to understand how someone problem-solves or how well they understand their own working style, ask them that. Not a super-vague open-ended question like ‘what’s your greatest weakness’. Recruitment is a significant undertaking and the company risks missing out on someone who could have been the best fit for the job and an amazing asset to the organisation, by not giving interviewees the chance to give the interviewer the info they actually need to know. If that makes sense. Sorry, rant over lol. That wasn’t directed at you of course, as the person trying to work out how to answer the question. It’s my frustration at this idea that the purpose of a job interview is to trip people up, when it should be to get information you need to make a decision on a candidate. So the panel should make it easy for candidates to give the information and not ask stupid cryptic questions that you need a code to understand!

Sprinkles: this is why you check with your hand to see what flavor they are first. Interviews: my last one I got told I was selected for a specific position at the job (I was a shoo-in for the job in general) because I have "integrity" ... so there's a good buzzword for my fellow autistic folks. Also your greatest weakness should always be phrased as a strength, so "because I lack a clear intuitive sense of time, I use calendars and reminders to make sure my day is scheduled and things are remembered, rather than just assuming I can avoid being busy or distracted right before and losing track of time." Don't use "no" or "not," they sound negative. This way your weakness sounds like "I at least know I might lose track of time due to circumstances and I have found a way to work around that, but everyone has this happen sometimes... are your other employees and candidates just trusting they will never have an off day?" without saying it so bluntly. Food tasting weird: this week ketchup tastes like straight up vinegar. It isn't a change in the ketchup, I just can't taste sweetness this week.

Hi! I just figured I should say thank you. This comment has been on my mind for a while now - probably a few months - but I just never got around to it (oops). One of your videos was the reason I started to consider that I might be autistic. I don’t remember which one exactly, but it was in mid-March 2023, I think. It took me a couple months to fully be sure that yeah, I’m autistic, and it took me even longer after that to adjust my life to it, and to give myself accommodations, and I’m still working on that even now. I’m so much happier, and it’s explained me in ways I’ve never had explained before. I’m very glad I figured it out while I’m still young (currently 16), because I feel like I have the opportunity to exist as myself before I’m an adult. I’m scheduled to start the process of getting an official diagnosis in a month, and I have you to thank for starting this whole process. I hope you know how much you’ve impacted my life, and I’m sure the lives of many others. Thank you so much.

I was a teen in the 70s when self help gurus became a mainstream thing, and I still bear the internalized scars...”no matter what you do to live right, it’s never enough!” Being constantly told you’re inadequate is hardly conducive to mental health. It gets even worse when you get oldish and the list of things you ought to or ought not do grows longer still.

I've noticed that a lot of autistic folks (including myself) have a higher tolerance and more of an openness/acceptance towards discussing traditionally "negative" circumstances or topics. In contrast, many neurotypical folks seem to be deeply affected by someone around them mentioning anything negative, even if it doesn't address them directly, and prefer to only speak positively with 99% of people in their lives. I wonder if this has anything to do with how our brains process emotions and internal stimuli differently? I, personally, much prefer speaking with fellow NDs because I'm not afraid to say I'm sad or talk about a special interest. Comfortably going from joking about trauma to watching a horrible 80s movie and eating pizza with no issues is the way to go for me!

Regarding learning for tests: Most of the time, I did not really have to learn much, because it was easy for me or I didn't want to bother and still got an okay grade. But I remember two incidents where that was definitely not the case. One was chemistry in 12th grade, where nobody really got the topic and the teacher turned a blatantly blind eye to cheating, so that people could have their dokuments on the table and look up stuff the didn't know - I just was so annoyed by that teacher and her "teaching" and blind eye-ing, that I just did not want to cheat and proudly received my only 5 (=F) I ever got in school. The other one was biology in 10th grade, where we had the topic "photosynthesis". There had been an experiment the previous class which I found boring and hadn't paid much attention to, and then boom - pop quiz on that. So I was lost for words I could write. As I was pretty good at drawing however, I decided on being "cheeky" and not write but draw what happened, and keep writing to a bare minimum. I answered all the questions and maybe wrote one sentence or two max. I expected to get a bad grade for not answering fully, but instead got a 1 (=A)! This confused me and tbh, I also thought it was a bit unfair towards my classmates, so I sought the teacher out after class and asked her about the grading. The response I got back was along the lines of "Well, I never specified you needed to write, so it counts. Would you rather have me giving you a lesser grade?" So I said no and just let it go, but as you can see, I never forgot either.

3:44 that illness thing is so real! As a kid I had this time I listened to a specific song a bunch but at the same time I had really nasty sinus pressure, which I don't get often. I'm not even sick that often, and I've been sick twice in the last couple months (which is actually odd for me) and both times I had bad sinus pressure that made me think of the song. It's been so long since I heard it that I can't remember how it goes, so the recall is only the name and the visual of the album cover in the old youtube player. The song is Ride the Lightning by Metallica. Luckily I haven't listened to Metallica in years so I don't have to *actively* avoid the song, but yes the association goes both ways. We use nonverbal annoyed sounds (intonations without words). If you don't want to be interrupted right now you do that and another person leaves you for now. Then you'll go ask what they wanted when you're ready, or they can speak with you during the switch or when you do something that doesn't look like tunnel kind of activity (if you forgot they wanted something). We both do that to eachother with my husband, and my dog also understands that, if she's too much. It can be like MMMMmmmm😠 or like hissing or like loud vocal fry. 16:13 This reminds me that I was always told cramming didn't work. ... And yet if I didn't do that I usually did worse. It was why I always tested very well. It was easy remembering what I just reviewed the night before ... even if it was the *entire* book essentially. .... And I got no sleep. Which ironically worked in my favor because now i didn't have pesky sleep to dull the memory of the info. Side fact: Some of my best work was projects done last minute because other people in the project just ... didn't do their work. I had a "cover-paper"/combining piece to do for a collective paper we were doing so I literally could not start my part till everyone else finished theirs. *None of them started a day before the last half of the last day before it was due AND none of them finished before midnight*. I wrote my whole part (about 1 page no double space, 11pt font times new roman) in less than an hour before I had to leave for class (Which included studying what they wrote and making references to it). The teacher praised the part I wrote as the best part of the whole paper without knowing anything that happened. .... without knowing the suffering I went through for that. Never again. I refuse. Group work for grades is dumb.

Just taking a moment to appreciate your awesome collection of earrings. I love your content, of course (I keep coming back to watch even if I haven´t left a comment before), but I wanted to send some special love in awe of how nice is your choice of earrinsg everytime (very relatable here)

One of the hardest things for me growing up was understanding why we need to sleep every single day or how you can exist while working 4-5 days a week. Like thats so much of your time in existence that's just gone forever and you have very very limited control over that and I just hated the thought of it

Gah! The song thing! I have been obsessed with Ayreon lately, especially the more recent live albums. Ayreon is a sci-fi themed collaboration project. You have a whole slew of singers from different bands coming together to do space-opera-rock-opera. The first song from Live Beneath Waves just dropped a couple of days ago, The Sixth Extinction, glorious twelve minute emotional roller coaster that song. 🤣

Most allistic people are really sweet and will do what ever they can to accommodate autistic people's needs, just as long as it doesn't require any physical, or mental effort on their part, or any changes in their routines or way of communicating. But other than those small caveats they'll generally do anything and some rare people might even forgo one or more of the caveats.

Thanks so much for spreading awareness with this channel, watching your content has really helped me a lot. I hesitate to self-diagnose but I will say I've realized that I have a lot of the same experiences as autistic people do, and score very highly on screening tests. Furthermore, I was dealing with some very intense anxiety lately and nothing seemed to help, but your content gave me the idea that I might feel better if I intentionally do more of my Weird Finger Wiggling, and spend a lot of time on my Overly Intense Hobbies, and this approach helped when nothing else would. So, thanks for helping me through that :)

I have been to about 4 interviews in the last month, and they often tell me I am too enthusiastic about the job. It can lead to me wandering off from the question. I have been asking fro them to print out the main questions so I can stay more focussed, but I still wander off. I am working on it.

As soon as I saw that first one and the way you described it my brain immediately went to Macarthur Park by Richard Harris 😂. If you don't know it listen to it, it's cheesy but in like a glorious masterpiece kind of way. The chorus is 'someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think that I can take it cos it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have the recipe again' so I'm sure you can see how I got there 😂

I've been getting a lot from your videos since I discovered your channel recently. I don't usually comment, but had to once I found out you were a Chappell Roan fan. I've had Hot To Go stuck in my head on and off since it came out. The others I've heard have also been pretty great. I'll have to check out the rest now. I get the impression that you (and your viewers) would like Em Beihold's "Numb Little Bug" too. Royal and the Serpent's "Overwhelmed" feels pretty on-topic, as well. Thank you for the entertaining and informative videos!

I don't listen to one song. I get deeply into one artist and learn their entire catalogue by heart. I remeber as a teen sitting down with my dad and he would play the first two or three seconds of a Thursday song and I would say what song it was. Before that I learned the lyrics to every Green Day song. Then every La Dispute song. Actually not every NOFX song - I think I kinda didn't find everything when I was most into them... And now I am working on every Streetlight Manifesto/Catch 22/Toh Kay song. I find it very difficult to get into any new artists, but once I do, it's everything.

As a former call center worker who supported a well known brand of printers in the 2000s, the one at 7:18 is totally right. As for the wi-fi provider change causing printer failure, that is probably because the printer has obtained a different IP address. Print off a network settings sheet and it should have the IP address settings on there, so you can see if it's getting it from the router, and what it is if this happens again. With newer versions of Windows, you can often just uninstall and reinstall the printer, and it will pick up the printer's new IP address. As for the printing things in advance, I had so many calls where someone was calling in frantically trying to print something they needed RIGHT NOW and I would frantically try to help them out. Occasionally, it would be something like a law office, with a "LOAD TRAY 1 LETTER" error and a legal deadline, and I'd have to wonder, why don't you have a backup printer or something? The blank pages are usually where a program sends something to the printer that it interprets as a "page feed" by mistake. Or it'll get sent incorrect character codes, and you get the printer interpreting your research paper as 50 pages, each with a single character in the top right corner or something, followed by a page full of random characters. If this happens, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer - it's often a driver issue.

Okay the listening to song 57 times thing is irritatingly accurate. I've actually done that with bands entire albums so much I got sick of it. Even stopped listening to bands for a long time for that reason. I would tell people I know "please I can't handle that song anymore." I feel pretty called out 😂

Hahahahaha! the honesty during interviews thing reminded me of years ago I applied for a job as a bi-lingual short-hand typist. So, I could take short-hand, but I couldn't read back what I'd written, but fortunately nobody mentioned short-hand, phew! They did have me do an accuracy-speed typing test. After that, during the interview, one of the interviewers pointed out that I had made only five mistakes in the typing test and I interrupted and said "no, I didn't! I made six mistakes." There was a bit of a quiet moment where the two interviewers looked at each other, then at me. I remember thinking "should I have said that?" I got the impression that it was a mistake (was it rude?), but I got the job anyway. In the same interview, they asked me "are you familiar with a telex machine" and I answered "yes". I had seen one the year before in a New York office. I had asked "what's that?" and was told "a telex machine". So I was familiar with a telex machine.... I knew they existed and what one looked like. First day on the job, first task: "here, send this telex, please". It was a panicked few moments as I searched through a bunch of books in the small telex room but then was delighted to find a manual. Oh and about strengths and weaknesses, the question I was asked at another interview years later, I answered (to the weaknesses) "I haven't found any yet" because for the life of me I couldn't imagine what the person meant. About the strengths, I said I could type 60 words per minute. I knew that was a strength because someone had said so in a different context... It's funny that only now do I realise that perhaps my reactions were not typical.... 🤣

For an entire month I was only listening to Frank Sinatra and then the songs lost their feeling so I just added them to my ever expanding playlist (The playlist has 194 songs right now!)

i can really recommend getting out of bed at least two hours before any demands come up. like actually time the entire day in a way that makes this possible. ideally don't start work before ca. 10am and set an alarm to go off at sunrise. that's the only thing my sleepy brain will accept as an argument to not turn away and fall asleep again - if i've managed to go to bed early enough too of course. i heard that one of the most important elements of emotional stability is uninterrupted dreaming and since this highly correlates with my pda i've made it my life's mission to never have to wake up to an alarm clock ever again (only to get used to a changed schedule, or the afore mentioned sunlight reminder).

8:49 I kind of solved this issue by getting myself a chair ball. I say "kind of" because I still don't have my back straight most of the time, but at least it makes me twist my spine less, and not just because I literally can't without falling but also because I feel more inclined to try other dangerous types of behaviour like sitting cross-legged without touching the ground. It's also bouncy, which provides a way to stim while watching anime. The downside is that it hurts my butt when I sit on it for too long.
