I work for a disability charity. One thing I've learned is one person will talk about their disability totally different from the next person and no way is really wrong.

because everyone with any disability experiences their disability entirely differently from each other. - no single disability is going to have the exact same effects across every single person with the condition

The fight with the puzzle piece and infinity symbol, light it up blue or red, Autism Speaks, Aspergers, person first, etc. makes me so sick. and saying it’s not a disability is so dismissive. Every autistic is autistic in their own way. Some of us struggle DAILY in so many ways, some barely know it’s there. The fighting over all of it is ridiculous. Thanks for always speaking the truth and your personal experiences, all the while speaking up for those who can’t. 💙💙💙

That's why I given up almost being an autistic activist. It's annoying when this would become who has the loudest voice and makes the biggest noise in the world wide autism community. These days as a love to KZbin, I just prefer to do my own things and express myself as an autistic individual rather than get caught up in this beef.

You rase a very good point Dan . It’s like the autistic community “thinks”they deserve something back from neurotypical people. Your not scared to rase your points on what you really think even if some people don’t like what your saying. But not everyone’s going to like what your saying at the end of the day and that’s ok because everyone’s different. Keep it real dude !!!

I love your content and what you are doing. You keep being you. I took care of a daughter with anger management issues by myself during Desert Storm while my husband was in Saudi Arabia. Granted shes not autistic but as a mother I understand the anxiety and fatigue taking care of a special needs child. Let them talk.

It was a case of 'who has the loudest voice' that forced me out of my local autism support group. This one person turned up and proceeded to ruin the whole thing. Unfortunately, there were other factors that made it impossible to do anything about it.

It's interesting you mention that. When I inquired about Autism Support Groups with my counsellor, who is on the Autism Spectrum and has a growing client list (I was fortunate to be included in it about a year ago), she candidly shared that she found them a waste of time, echoing your sentiments. I hugely appreciate her frankness on this matter. I was grateful for her input because I was not too fond of group discussions. Also, the subject of such group activities would come up in so-called helpful suggestions by people who don't know the first thing about Autism from any angle or any place on the spectrum. No matter how many times I explain things, they don't bother listening. I'll start learning Japanese (I've picked up a few words whilst watching Shiba Inu dog videos and learning about Kabuki theatre) or Hungarian and reply in these languages.

I literally just had this conversation with my son today. We are both autistic and we are both tired of all the soap box autistic community. I have unfollowed so many autistic people because I found myself getting agitated and depressed. All the rules and demands had me so overwhelmed. I personally think it makes us very unapproachable when we are so angry, demanding, complaining, whining, arrogant. What does this all accomplish? How and why would someone want to "accept" us? I absolutely respect your channel. It's healthy, resourceful safe and inviting. I can't say thank you enough. Your work matters.

I agree with what you said, but I can understand why autistic people became that way too. (At least for me) Before I was diagnosed and a kid in school, I was constantly picked on, pushed around, hit, and ostracized for being different. I wanted to be social... I wanted to be accepted, but I became antisocial and rejected. Obviously, a lot of things we do learn comes from observation and the people around us. I didn't socialize with people as no one wanted to socialize with me. I observed other people. I learned how not to be, and I learned some of what I should be from people around me. Within the autistic community, I found acceptance more than I did outside of it. The desire to want to protect the autistic community from neurotypicals is very real. "Charity" organizations that want to attack the autistic community, by pushing neurotypical agendas, or even neurotypicals trying to suppress the autistic voice are worthy causes to try to stop. This makes sense to me, considering I've dealt with neurotypical people suppressing my rights my whole life. I can understand the sentiment that autistic people can feel attacked by neurotypical agendas violating our rights, because that's been my whole life. However, I typically don't get into those debates. I try to do my best to educate people when they ask "Why is Autism Speaks so bad?" I tend to avoid drama, as stress is not something I handle well. I light it up red every April because I have seen the ad and made my own conclusions as to why they earned the ire of the autistic community. And yes, autism is very much a disability for me. Not a superpower. My relationship with autism is a love/hate one. (And I feel this is the case with most people). I hate the struggles, the non-inclusion, the social isolation, etc. But I also know, my whole personality, my whole being is a result of being autistic. I feel a lot of people in the autistic community also feel this way, and are very passionate about protecting themselves from any message that can be perceived as an attack. A lot of the neurotypical narrative had been directed at the community as a whole, not on an individual case by case basis. I can understand when an autism parent vents their frustrations cause their severely autistic kid just destroyed their house again. I can understand their desire for a cure for their son. But I can also understand how that desire equates to.... "Autism needs to be cured." For April this year, my message was of acceptance. I encouraged people in the autistic community to reach out and communicate with each other. I encourage neurotypical people to offer to include autistic people in their conversation, or to even let them info-dump about something that interests them. Every single conversation I observe, is about topics I have no opinions on, and it is taxing. On one hand, I wish to speak. On the other hand... it is rude to interrupt, I do not know the topic, etc. I end up at social get-togethers bored out of my mind, and wishing I was back home. My message was to include autistic people. For one Christmas, members of my wife's family actually asked me if I wanted to play Pinochle with them. I felt honored, even though the game was cut short 5 minutes in and never resumed again. :( But it felt nice to feel included.

I'm a newly diagnosed Autistic person (aged 39) seeking answers to all the questions I have about Autism. I'm trying to learn about myself and how I can do things to make my life better. All I see though is negativity and dictating from a lot of autistic KZbinrs telling me what I should think and what I should say. I'm sick of it! It's toxic.

My husband has ASD, NVLD, and ADHD, and I suspect our daughters are somewhere on the spectrum (maybe myself, but leaning more toward NVLD or ADHD). I suspect my husband's dad was autistic (he had bipolar). My mom was diagnosed in her old age as ADHD. I am grateful for your channel and others about neurodiversity to help me understand neurodiversity of the different types.

As an ND workplace coach I am constantly challenging clients for using the word "should", who says you "should" be able to do this or do that that way? We are all unique individuals and the only thing we "should" be is our own selves, the only thing we "should" do is what works for us as long as we are not damaging others seriously in the process.

Your video is important, because it speaks to hope and action. I can understand and empathise with a lot of the content I have seen, and I think that it is important that people speak up about their lived experiences, and that these are acknowledged and have validation, so that we can move forward. We are a group of people who have lived with, and are living with trauma. So, inevitably progress is going to be messy. But, we are a very resourceful group of empathetic problem solvers, and this gives me the most hope. As always, many thanks for what you do. ✨

Very Important! You're doing a terrific work at spreading Awareness and Consciousness. This message reminds of that stupid line from Dune "Fear is the mind-killer". I think it's stupid because fear can make your mind more aware of risks and threats, so fear can increase awareness when listened properly and rationally. Narcissism is the Real mind-killer

Hi Dan, some interesting points you've made in this video. If you haven't covered these topics already, would the following topics be something to consider in a future video or two? One is Autism vs Narcissism, and what differences to look out for, and why someone who is autistic might be unfairly seen in this way. Two is Autism and Imposter Syndrome, and why a number of autistic people may feel like an imposter in their surroundings. Even though I am an Aspie myself, (having had that diagnosis in my teens), I don't say to people I have Asperger's for another point that was brought up; understanding. I stopped using the term even before finding out about the origins of the man whom it was named after. More people are familiar with the term Autism than they are with Asperger's in my experience, and I say to people I know I'm on the Autism Spectrum, or I have autism.

i think when we nit pick and attack each other ait serves no purpose qe already have to deal with a lot of c r a p, we don't always have to agree or believe the same things, but as group there's a lot of challenges and few external to either don't want to help or infantilise us. i would have left this earth years ago if it was not for been around people like me and that i can understand. people are at their best when they help each other, i am reminded of Carl Sagan pale blue dot there nobody externally coming to our rescue, its here we stand and when unified who can fight against us, its easy to dismiss a few but not millions. sorry if i am sounding melodramatic its been one of those days.

You make me want to cry..b/c your kindness and the fact that your moral compass believes that there is room for everyone at the table and the more the merrier and it helps others feel less alone besides educating the masses. Each person is different and unique in how it presents in them..just as each person in the world (outside of the community) is unique in they are - if that makes sense..I hope it does. *hides face*

Hey! My name is Morgan. I absolutely love your channel. I have a few questions for you. Even though I've done my research, I still seem to trigger my husband's meltdowns. I know not to take it personally because it's a build-up of many different things that aren't expressed. However, lately, it seems as if anything bothers him. I will give him space after work and let him come to me, but when he has an urge for us to do something together, most of the time, he doesn't say anything until he has a meltdown. Then, it's too late. How can I let him know that it's okay to communicate with me if he's is ready and / or wants to have time together without feeling that I'm invading his space? Also, how will I know he wants to have time together? Will it be in his actions, spontaneousness, etc.? I'm not the best at body language. I grew up with Epilepsy, but this is about him. I don't want him to meltdown again anytime soon, and Heaven forbid he experience another case of autistic burnout. Is there any way you can help me better myself for him?

Hi I completely agree with you I have a puzzle piece charm but apparently that extremely offensive now 🧩 I’ll still be wearing mine! I have 3 boys 2 of which are on the spectrum I guess at opposite ends. I myself am going through the diagnostic process as it’s presumed I have also have it. Without channels like this spreading awareness and acceptance a lot more people would still be in the the same way I was. I never knew my children had autism until it was brought to my attention even though one of my children now attends a specialist school setting (I won’t go into how difficult it was to get him into a school) I kept saying they are fine all children are different and I a have always done those things they just follow me 😅 I had very little info about autism which looking back is shocking! Without people sharing their knowledge and being allowed to using words of their choosing I would still be very much in the dark I hadn’t realised females also weren’t being diagnosed 😢 sorry for the ramble but I really appreciate you!!!
