I read about the symptoms of autism and one stuck out in particular: obsessive interests. This child appears to have that, and it manifests itself on the piano. I also did a bit of research on Mozart. He had an array of psychiatric conditions, yet he is perhaps the greatest composer in history. In a creative lifetime spanning only 30 years Mozart composed more than 600 works. The human brain is powerful, fascinating and mysterious.

As an autistic person, hyperfixation is like rolling a dice. I've known many people who have become near-geniuses because their hyperfixations are things like science, music, maths, engineering etc, whereas mine are ALL useless career-wise lmao I'm very envious but also ecstatic to see autistic youth getting the recognition they deserve for their talents (just sucks I definitely won't be one of them LOL)

I get the impression that you don't know what autism is when you say "I'm beginning to think that WE'RE the ones that are "autistic",".
@macomonkey6969 Жыл бұрын
it's a common trait of autistic people to be hyper engaged with their interests, and simultaneously find it difficult to engage with things outside of those interests. Autism happens in many forms as it is a spectrum, but from what I've heard, this is the common trait. While there will be cases where the autism does in some way impair their functional intelligence in our world, from my knowledge most people diagnosed with autism have a normal level of intelligence. To put my view of autism very simply, they are just as intelligent as non-autistic people, but with a (possibly fundamentally) different way of thinking. I don't know how much of what I've said is correct though.
@vervetech9395 Жыл бұрын
Autism lies in a spectrum that's why APA DSM V termed it as Autism spectrum disorder. It's a developmental disorder where a person lacks social cues, interaction and communication, has restricted and repetitive or ritualistic behaviour. Not every autistic person has high IQ. Only those on the spectrum of high functioning autism called Asperger's syndrome have high IQ.

So much good in this story. So much. But, one point stands out: the beauty of America is that kindness transcends race, culture, background…our differences. Yes, we’ve had and are experiencing tough times. We have a lot of work to get better. But, this story reminds me of the inherent goodness that makes our country unique. It’s so special and inspiring. It’s what it means to be an American.

@@miltonmoore8369 Agreed, goodness is not unique to the U.S. But, the diversity of America-filled with so many different races, religions, and ethnicities is unique to the world. When goodness is shared in a way that transcends those differences-differences that are sociologically different than many countries-that's beautiful. That's particularly unique to the U.S. I feel and see this strongly because my parents are immigrants to the U.S. As someone's who's traveled the world, lived overseas, and grew up witnessing their journey, this very much influences my perspective.

As the grandmother of a 14 year old grandson on the lower functioning end of the autism spectrum, this makes my heart sing and makes me tear up. Not only did this gentleman gift this special, blessed and talented young man with a piano, he truly cared about this child and furthering his talent. After my grandson was officially diagnosed with autism around 3-4 years of age, I kept of course hoping he would start developing on the higher end of the spectrum and maybe show an awesome talent such as this young man, but he did not. He will speak only the words that he knows for the things he wants (food items, his fave animated movies) and doesn’t not talk in conversation. He does understand basic phrases and commands (“Jack, give me a hug” or “Jack, give me sugars”). It took me some time to get over the fact that he will not develop further, but slowly God has made me realize just how special Jack is in his own world and own way. I’ve come to realize that he is severe enough to just enjoy and be happy and NEVER EVER know the hurt of people looking at him strangely or children (and sadly adults too) making fun of him. He is truly a gift from God, a blessing and a beautiful human, as we all are.
