Our youngest son is finally learning to swim! This is huge for autism safety as many children on the spectrum are drawn to water for sensory input and they can easily be at risk when they don't know how to swim. Please leave a comment!

I love watching your videos because I am 15 and am pretty sure I have autism but have never gotten it tested, but it opens my eyes up so much more to see this world, so I thank you guys so much for making these videos and will continue to watch these for as long as I can. 😁

Seems like they’re having a blast. I’m also autistic and I love swimming and just any activity that involves getting wet. I love Swimming and Splashing around in the water.

From what I remember it took me more than a month of swimming lessons to swim as well as Alastair is. I remember learning how to float, then the dog paddle and then a lot of practice with kicking and some other basic swimming techniques. I think I was entirely in the shallow end of the pool at the swimming school for around two months. After that I no longer needed the flotation devices. By month three I was able to swim in the deep end and jump off the diving board. I was (I think) around twelve at the time (give or take). In short it takes time but with a lot of practice one will make progress a step at a time. I’m still not an expert at swimming but I know enough to get by (at least in a swimming pool).

Swimming is such an important skill! Good for you, getting all the kids trained. I know too many adults who haven't had the opportunity to learn, and frankly it is scary!

When I was a kid, I practically lived at the YMCA taking swimming lessons and swimming with all the other kids. Mom would drop me off early in the morning and I would be there until she picked me up in the afternoon.

What a fun family vacation! Thank you for sharing. I'm anxious and nervous to take my autistic son who is 8 and doesn't know how to swim yet this summer. It is such a fun summer activity I want both my kids to know how to swim.

@@AutismFamilyChannel earplugs are a definite option but also do your best to make sure any water in the ear canal is dryed out. Some of us seem to have weird ear canals that catch and retain water, I manage to even in the shower 😢. A towel or tissue held to the ear and tip and hold your head so that ear is pointed downward and you may need to wiggle your head, you get a weird feeling when the water drains out 🤔 Yes, absolutely become comfortable in the water. Best friend moved to a house with a pool when we were six, at first we were only allowed in the shallow part where we could stand, once we showed that we could do several laps of the pool (dog paddle or beast stroke) were we allowed into the deep end without his older brother or mother watching us (but an adult or brother needed to be home).
