This is what a typical meltdown looks and sounds like for Logan. They are STRESSFUL. I try to remain calm and help him get through it, while ensuring everybody's safety, including his. These situations are beyond his control and he does not want to be like this. They are typically triggered by sensory overload, overstimulation, or communication frustration - but many times we really don't know. One thing is for sure - we love him no matter what!
Other parents out there like us will surely be able to relate to this.

He definitely understands that he can't see them, but he probably is frustrated and doesn't get why. Understandable. I get upset when I'm unexpectedly disappointed and struggling to process too. Plus, I can swear explosively or tell people what I'm feeling. Logan is doing that, in his own way. Wish we could find some way to help that part of Autism for us people. Parts can be great, but that loss of control feels much more awful than it looks. You're a great Dad for being so understanding. That really makes all the difference in the world. Trust me, it'd be worse if you don't meet us where we are at because we're gone and we can't get back on our own.

Thank you for the very insightful comment and kind words! That means a lot. I love getting these kind of comments and insights from individuals that are autistic. It really helps me to better understand Logan. Logan is non-verbal, so he can't tell us how he is feeling or if he has any physical pain. It is hard on us because we are always guessing, but I know for sure that it is way harder on him. No doubt about it. All I can do is love him unconditionally and try to help him get through it. Thank You!

Thank you for the kind words! It is not easy, but I do my best. As challenging as our life is caring for Logan, I think it is probably even harder on him.

@@LogansAutism Does Logan like weighted blankets or vests? That might work when the hand squeezes don't work because it's like getting squeezed or hugged.
@LogansAutism

@@kateparent366 We tried a weighted blanket for Logan several years ago. He would resist having it on him, so we just gave up on that idea. The two sensory calming activities that work for Logan are car rides and taking baths. Needless to say, we do a lot of both of those! Good suggestion though, and thank you for the comment.

Logan wants so bad to be happy all the time. When he has meltdowns like this we can tell that he does not want to be like this, but something in his body just goes off. These situations are not fun for any of us.

My son also pinching with his fingernail to my hand and feet😅..it hurt

Yes, we certainly know that feeling. In a meltdown (agitated/aggressive) situation, Logan will try to pinch our hands and arms with his fingernails. Yep, it hurts! We always wear long-sleeve shirts or sweatshirts around the house just in case. That way we can pull the sleeves down over our hands very quickly to protect them. However, sometimes it just happens too fast and he will get our hands and arms. Never feet though - we have never had that happen. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Do you have trouble clipping your son's fingernails too? Logan hates having his fingernails clipped.

@@LogansAutism I cut his nails when he sleeps..we can't brush his teeth either. his hair too..we only do it when he sleeps. he likes to jump and pick up small things. he doesn't want to eat either..only drink milk

@@AnysDaniel That is the kind of stress that only parents of special needs kids would understand. My only hope is that it gets better for your son. When Logan was younger, haircuts were a 3-person job. I would bear-hug him, my wife would hold his legs and somebody to cut his hair quickly. Now, he still hates haircuts, but he will tolerate it for about 5 minutes and I can do it by myself. One day at a time....

@@LogansAutism My son can't speak but he understands if I call him to go take a shower or call him to drink milk. one day I had severe anxiety, I called his name many times for him to drink milk..I lost hope.suddenly he got angry..he went to take his milk bottle and showed it to me. that incident opened my eyes that my son has hope.

How about playing a recording of his therapist if that would calm him down? If they are okay with it of course. Good luck, I hope all works out for your family.

Great idea, however, Sandra and Darcy, the 2 former therapists that he mentioned during this particular meltdown have been gone now for maybe 12 years. We have no idea where they are now. Logan still talks about many of the therapists/respite workers from back in the day. He has an incredible memory.
