does anyone else just freeze up when they get a meltdown, like more of a freeze than "acting out". you go numb and even are unable to speak?

I get exactly that as well!! I think what you're describing is called a "shutdown", when you're overwhelmed and suddenly unable to speak or listen/ take in any more information. I very rarely meltdown but have shutdowns more often. I hope this helps :)

My parents usually threaten me when I am having a meltdown. They do the complete opposite of making me feel safe. They try to stop my meltdown by trying to make me feel like if I continue something bad will happen to me. They say things like "if you keep screaming the police will come and take you away from us" or "you are going to get thrown in a mental hospital and you won't be able to leave", "you are upsetting your sister. Don't you care about her", "you need to think about other people instead of just thinking about yourself", "This is a nightmare for us to deal with and you are being very abusive", "you think too negatively all the time. If you would just think positively you would not feel like this all the time. It is your fault". All of this makes my meltdown worse and scares me even more. I only recently got diagnosed with autism and my parents don't know how to properly handle a meltdown. Any time I tell them that they should learn more about dealing with an autistic kid they get mad and say "we have tried everything with you and nothing works. We can't do anything more and you are on your own. It is your job to control yourself, not ours." I know that they obviously did not try everything. I have meltdowns just thinking about all these things that they say to me. What am I supposed to do? I feel like not even my own parents understand me, I have zero friends, and I don't even have a proper therapist yet. I'm very upset about all this and there are no videos for autistic people to learn how to handle a meltdown if they are alone. All these videos are for the people without autism to learn how deal with another autistic person. Thank you so much to everyone who reads this! If you are going through something similar just know that you are not alone and when you grow up/get the strength you can cut off toxic people, including family members, who only make your life harder!

Omg this is relatable! I just had a meltdown in the shower and I keep getting confused about the difference between meltdown and the other one, I can’t tell the difference still, I’m so confused what one I do, I’m trying to convince myself it’s just a meltdown because I feel that wanting to get own my own way feels like it’s bad...afew days ago when I was having a meltdown my mother said to me I was trying to get my own way....is getting my own way a bad thing? Is wanting to feel happy a bad thing...😞 that’s how I see it Rn, I hope you understand, and thank you so much for the heads up and the story! I’m going through a really hard time and I hate feeling this way but it happens...

First off, you’re not mental, you’re autistic and you’re having a very hard time. I’m not autistic but I do have another neurological condition which means that I have a hard time processing and understanding information and I find the threats that the neuro typical people in my life use very hard to handle, especially when they’re empty threats. You could write a list of the things you find helpful (and not helpful) while you’re not in a meltdown so that the people around you have a guide for what to do to help you before, during and after the meltdown. My girlfriend is autistic and doing this really helped me figure out how to help her to calm down. Hope this helps.

I recommend Dr Greene's book, The Explosive Child. Followers of this book use the process for themselves as well as their children. We say Plan B yourself! If you read it you will know what it means! Although it isn't very helpful for how to do the de-escelate stage. I am so sorry you have to do that by yourself. Your parents are saying hurtful things. I help my son deescalate a lot and I sometimes talk too much. This is a good reminder to keep focus on not saying logical things when the emotions are high!

I have to say that at age 35, meltdowns are very rare for me now compared to my younger years. I think this is because I have gotten better at noticing when I am getting close to being overwhelmed and doing something before I completely lose it. One of my best coping strategies for if I start to meltdown in public is to go into the nearest ladies restroom and close myself in a stall. I can isolate myself, give myself a degree of privacy, and fuss and cry until I calm down enough to decide what I am going to do. People also generally leave you alone if you are in a bathroom stall.

I don't now if I have meltdowns. If I get really stressed I either go into a cold dark room and mutter the same sentence to myself for several minutes or hours or walk round outside for several minutes or hours while talking to myself in a loud, agitated voice.

I think that my meltdowns tend to be more related to emotions, stress, and anxiety than sensory related and it's something I've dealt with majority of my life. Over the years, I’ve learned how to hide it and in moments like this when I'm extremely overstimulated and feel myself about to breakdown, especially in public, I usually go into a private area like a bathroom stall and have my private meltdown. One thing that I'm trying to get my parents to understand is that when I have meltdowns where they are there to witness it, they think I’m being crazy, out of control or being negative. I can be but that’s not what it actually is. That’s how I handle my emotions and very often, it's nearly impossible to contain my them. After that, I feel myself going into shutdown mode like I stay reserved, it all of a sudden becomes hard for me to speak, I start to become really quiet and I am exhausted. They also sometimes force me to talk when I have a hard time to which is not right. When I am ready to talk and explain myself, I will but until then, please just give me some time to calm down and to process everything that just happened.

Mia you seem to have autism traits, is not by being diagnosed that you understand you belong to the spectrum. The spectrum is very wide and our traits might change drastically from one side of the spectrum to the other. You need to find your own way to deal with either an overload or a meltdown (seems like you already on a good path). It will be a never ending story but if you spend time to work on it things will be much easier in the future. I am 53 now and spent all my life training myself. That doesn’t exclude a meltdown but it will teach you how to keep in control even in very complicated situations. Find yourself good friends that are willing to understand you better as an autistic, it will help a lot.

@@gracechristopher3133 For your information, herbal medication does not help to cure autism. Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disability that affects a person's ability to socialize, communicate, perceive things, how they are able to achieve certain skills and how they sense the world around them. There are two important key words: lifelong meaning that you are autistic from the time you enter this world until the day you die and neurodevelopmental which is how the brain functions and develops. It also affects the nervous system in many ways. With that being said, there is NO CURE for autism, there never will be and there shouldn't even have to be a cure in the first place! I'm autistic and if I wanted to switch from autistic to neurotypical, doctors would have to exchange my brain for another brain and insert it into my head therefore, I would be a completely different person. So with that, it would not be possible because we can't separate our autism from the rest of us. Autism is not just a small part of us, it's literally how our brains work and it makes up the entirety of our being. This is another reason why using identity first language over person first language when it comes to addressing us is super important within the autism community. Anyway, I'm just trying to state the facts. Please do your research and stop being in denial. That's all. Have a good day! :)

Re tarded boomers still think it’s gonna be Andy Griffith and his rootin tootin partner showing up to have a good old fashioned man-to-man talk. Nah. It’s gonna be a trigger happy ass hole who’s looking for some easy paid leave and a mentally ill person “acting out” is a perfect excuse to feel threatened from thirty feet away. Look up articles about it and there’s still idiots calling police on their schizophrenic and bi polar kids as if their narcissistic bullshit isn’t a one of the primary cause of the condition.

These are my stages of an autistic meltdown: 1- I am adverting my eyes and trying not to make eye contact. This is also when the thoughts start to creep in which make the situation become worse. 2- I can’t talk or move. I turn non-verbal and can’t communicate in anyway, and I hope someone can understand that I don’t want to be touch, and be left alone to take a nap to help me forget about what happened. Normally, though, I start to call myself stupid and things like that in my head. I also say I don’t deserve to cry because it is a stupid reason. 3- I have a flight response. Because people won’t leave me alone, I try to get out of their grasp and run away. I almost ran away a couple of times. Normally it feels like adrenaline is pumping through me and my heart is racing. 4-Fight response. This is the stage I dislike the most because I start to put others in danger. I punch and kick at them to try to get away from them because they are probably doing one of he follow: grabbing my wrists, grabbing my ankles, grabbing my neck, grabbing my hair, pushing me, kicking me, etc. This is always my last resort option, and I feel so bad when I do it. Normally it happens to be y mom that I do this o, and yes I know she’s doing bad things to me, she makes me feel horrible for doing things to her.

This video was so perfectly describing a autistic meltdown and how it differ from tantrums, I had a experience today with my family trying to explain why I couldn’t be in a certain place at that time and they didn’t understand at all and thought I was trying to get something out of it but when I searched and showed my mother this video it perfectly described what I myself couldn’t explain and she apologized and praised me for being so mature and explained in a difficult situation, so this video really helped me so much today and it was just so well spoken ❤️❤️❤️

It hurts when I have a meltdown. I feel like I can’t stop it. When it happens I feel like I’m not even in my own mind. I can see what’s going on but it’s like it’s my instinct to meltdown. It’s like blowing up a balloon until it pops. I want it to stop but I don’t know what to do. I was also abused as a younger child and I always feel like my life is on the line. I’m always the one who has to be in control (for obvious reasons). Please someone give me some advice. I want to be happy and normal. I feel broken and lost and I can’t take it anymore. At home at least I put myself in "time out" when my daughter has a meltdown. Any extra stimulus isn't helpful, no eye contact, no movement, no talking so as long as she is in a safe place (ie not the kitchen or bathroom) I let her know that I am going to give her some space. She can come and get me or call out if she needs me at any time (this isn't a punishment) and I usually give her a good 10 minutes after the screaming/crying stops. It works for us.

Thank you for this post. May I suggest changing the wording from “Time Out”, which is used a form of behavioural punishment and understood as that in general society, to calling it “a peaceful pause”. I use this with my daughter, and one of her main things is she does not want to be sent away or for me to leave her (like a traditional “time out”). She just needs the time and space and calm environment to work through her stuff. This usually involves a snuggle once she is calm enough.

Thank you Paul! Now I know what a meltdown is, and realize that I have experienced them whenever I am pressured to be around (and stay around) toxic people. There is no greater panic in my mind than having to work with toxic coworkers, or deal with a toxic family member, or a toxic romantic relationship. In these cases I would slam the door while going to a room by myself, where I cry hysterically; wailing and weeping out loud. But I realized that there is a way to get away from toxic people, if I am patient (such as applying for a new job). Life has been better since then 😊.

_"The first thing you wanna do is make sure I can't hurt myself or anyone else or anything else"_ Thank you!! For *me* that is to hold me down or even restrain me so I'm completely unable to do anything. I'm trying so hard to tell my healthcare contacts this but they're like "no we can't do that, you might be traumatized. We will just talk you out of it instead" and I'm like "But I really, really, really *NEED* that to calm myself down!". It's so frustrating that they don't understand my needs. Just to clarify this is for times when I’m hospitalized for my bipolar depressions and not the hour I’m seeing my therapist.

It has been many moons now since I actually experienced a full on meltdown, however I reckon this is largely due to my increased awareness of the causes of meltdown for me, hence a conscious avoidance of situations which may lead to a meltdown. I still have poor memories of the response being something along the lines of "Oh, he's throwing a wobbly; he just wants attention", type of attitude. ("Do you want a smack?? " "Stop it now, or I'll give you something to cry about!") Oh no I don't! If I did, I am able to ask for it; when I meltdown I have no control remaining. It still scares me as I honestly know that I am able to do immense amounts of damage which will not be forgiven afterwards. It has become not uncommon these days if I feel a meltdown on its way, to escape the situation by taking myself to the toilet. This in itself has negative repercussions, but generally folk are squeamish enough about toileting ideas that they are reluctant to question me too closely. It has, however led to my choosing to jack in a job as the stress caused has led to significantly too much time spent 'hiding' in the loos. The "NT" community need to learn much more about positive ways to support us in Meltdown situations.; so often I've found NT folk doing the exact wrong thing! I friend of mine who is Aspie, by diagnosis, was having a borderline meltdown, at a rehearsal a few years ago; I did what I'd like done for me in that situation: namely, give me space to regain control; what many other folk did was crowd around this person and ask (frankly ignorant!) questions like, "are you ok?"; I think there was at least one person who tried putting an arm around the person melting down. No no no; perhaps it's just me, but trust me here, touching me when I'm melting down is a sure-fire route to hospital (for both of us!). Now I'm thinking I should not have written that as it makes me sound like a violent, and dangerous person, which I'm honestly not. But seriously, get a life!!!! How can it be so difficult to read what we are going through?? After all, surely its us who are supposed to lack empathy? Oh well this comment is degenerating into a rant now, and I must finish in order to be able to go out for my walk!!! Physical fitness is often undervalued, yet in my experience it is essential in reducing the high rate of early deaths amongst the autistic community. TTFN

I love the lion poster. Reminds me of the Strength card in tarot, where a woman has 'tamed' a lion with her natural sense of compassion. I had many years with a past partner in confusion and turmoil where I thought he may be autistic, as he had meltdowns a lot. In time I figured he was actually narcissistic, and they were temper tantrums or just him losing control because of his need to be in control. I had a ton of patience and compassion for a long time, until it wore me out (along with other narc traits like deciet and use of cohersive control amung other things that were very 'narc only' traits). His bahaviour actually completely dysregulated my own nervous system and I ended up with high anxiety until I got sick with chronic fatigue. He often verbally attacked me, behaved very intimidating like getting in my face, blaming me for things, ect. I try to calm him but then would end up just sitting there crying. A lot of time he would just pass out after, he would totally exhaust himself. Thats similar to a meltdown like you described, kindof a blend a lot of the two often he was overwhelmed from stressers/ stimuli. I was always trying to figure it out to help him. But after he recovered he would not talk to me about it to be able to 'plan' for those events to truly help the situation, or even tell me what he needed to support him. It was so bad he would often break things, rip apart things and smash them and even tear his own clothes off. He wouldnt even clean it up himself a lot of times. If he hurt himself he lied to people what happened and expected me to back his story. It was very disorienting, I think part of gaslighting to hide his behaviour. Anyways, my point in sharing that is for anyone who may be in that same confused place I was in, trying to figure out someone elses behaviour because it affects you. Regardless of the 'why' (autism or not) if the person doesn't take responsibility for themselves, seek thier own help, or want to talk with you about it and work with you, be sure to take care of yourself first. Including leaving the person before you get hurt, and that can happen whether they mean to or not if really out of control. Never endure anything that becomes abuse (intimidation, threats, put downs, ect). My ex finally got a diagnosis for manic depression. I felt that was probably not everything, but it doesnt matter we are no longer together. But pretty sure at this point it wasn't autism, and it was not OK to use me as an emotional punching bag when he lost control. This is just for anyone who needed to hear that. Appriciate the video, and your channel, its fantastic and actually helps clarify things for me in retrospect. Thanks again, much Stength you have ❤🦁❤

Not symptoms, traits! The sooner you and your son internalize that message, the better. Autism is not a disease nor an accessory -- it's a way of being. I wish to God that id been taught this message from a young age, but i'll settle with knowing parents of kids like your son have access to THESE videos instead of the horrible shit my parents were reading pre-internet.

@@Applebottompenis Stimming is a symptom. It's not negative unless you wish it to be. It is a mood regulatory reaction to over stimulation. The downside is that autistic people DO experience it, it does effect their life - it doesn't mean you're a bad person or less of a person intrinsically. There ARE symptoms to autism and being practical in how we discuss it is also how we help manage it. I was not trying to be cruel when I used the word and I'm still not.

@@SVisionary No, it's not a symptom, it's a trait. You can't talk about symptoms if you're not talking about illness. Symptom is a sign of an illness and autism is not the illness.

Thank you. It is hard for me to fully explain this when my self regulation isn't available due to some crisis. I haven't had a full meltdown for a long time. My ps5 controller was soaked when I was away when an animal knocked my favorite water cup over. I have cancer and have not been feeling well. More so the last few days because the chemo is really harsh and I'm in excruciating pain. So, I rely on gaming to collect my thoughts and process my daily stress. I've always used gaming or reading for this. I lost complete control while still trying to solve the problem. On the floor rocking, crying and screaming feeling completely lost and out of control. I'm so ashamed that I still do this as an adult. I pride myself on self control and mindfulness. It just is so agonizing when I can't debug my system after a particularly rough day functioning. It's like in the moment my world is collapsing and I have no ability to control my mind or body. Like I'm watching it all happen from above the situation desperately wanting it to end so I can resume my normal routine. It's so hard to explain this to people that don't experience these type of irrational reactions to their environment. Sometimes I just wish I was normal. To live a day without overstimulation or intrusive thoughts would be lovely. -Lobo

We have a client who has both ADHD and autism. Sometimes, when this client demands something we cannot provide immediately, they become insistent. When they reach a heightened state of agitation, they will not accept redirection or distractions. This requires us to remain alert, as the client may become physically aggressive, and we may need to perform an emergency use of manual restraint. While it can be frustrating, we understand that these individuals require our help, and we must exercise patience. Our priority is to identify what is and is ineffective in managing their behavior.

Son shouts he found them... put them under something when doing last thing before search. Ppl had gone so only heard a wild woman screaming to find the keys. Afterwards calm down immediately buy feel totally burned out and embarrassed. Recovery getting quicker but in the meltdown it is all lost in the moment. I am nit open about my autism but these meltdowns in my home witnessed by workmen are probably misunderstood/ misinterpreted. They are scarey and it has got worse as I have gotten older. I have two grand daughters that are on the Autism Spectrum. One, the youngest, really struggles with behaviour and often times has meltdowns. When a meltdown happens, she knows that she has to go to her room for a quiet, time out. However, often times when she is in her room, she will throw toys around, slam the door, and kick walls. After she calms down, she has to clean up the toys she has thrown and straighten up the room. It is the kicking of walls and door slamming that is hard to get her to stop. She also has some weird obsession when a TV is on and no one is in the room to watch it. Usually it is just a matter of someone, like her sister, running to the bathroom and leaving the TV on for that brief time. She will become so freaked out, and starts a meltdown, but she becomes very violent and destructive, breaking cords, remotes, and TVs in an attempt to shut it off. We have worked with her to try to get her to understand that it is only a TV and will not hurt her or anything if left on for a few minutes but she doesn't get it. Any suggestions on how to change that behaviour?
@StStStS
@StStStS Ай бұрын
This comment is months old so not sure you will see my reply now but, regarding the fact that the TV being left on freaks out your grand daughter, could the family not just agree to turn it off when they go to the bathroom? I tend to make these sort of concessions if explanations don’t work. She will understand when she is a bit older. As your other grand daughter is older it could work okay. Well done for getting her into the routine of going to her room to cool down. And even clearing up anything she has messed up. If she is able to do all that, perhaps she could also be redirected to something other than the door to slam; pillows to punch, beanbags to throw, an exercise ball to throw herself onto for example. Best wishes.

Hello, my son is 25 years old, and the other day at church, he got up with us to do the offering and very fast in an aggressive way run to the front of the church just to grab a pen to scribble the envelopes that was at the entrance. When I finally got next to him, he was like when a person ends a street fight, I noticed it in his eyes and how he was breathing, I just turned it to the wall and told him, okay, you got what you wanted, calm down. On a calm throne without scolding him. Is very hard because when he sees a paper, he wants to scribble it no matter if it has something already written in it. What you can advise me on this.

I tend to have meltdowns over bad communication. I don't have a problem expressing myself but for some reason one family member misconstrues what I say. I don't say it right, my tone is incorrect, my body language is saying something else, so on. So after repeating the same answer in many ways I end up yelling and they're like we're in public you shouldn't do that. Sometimes I hate speaking to them. And I have no clue how to speak instead of just staying silent.

As a kid and teenager I used to check if my belongings are on their places. I did. it once a day after school. If something was missing I started searching. But I got so upset that quickly I lost control over myself and the situation. It was absolutely horrible. I used to scream, squeak, swear through clenched teeth, bang my fists or head off a wall, throw and break things. It usually lasted few minutes. During these few minutes I had a terrible flow of power but it was short. Then I was drained out of energy, shaking, crying. My family had a lot of fun of me and they still do. For me it was horrible and very embarrassing experience. Was it an example of autistic meltdown? Sometimes the searched thing got found during the tantrum, then I started getting calmer, but it also took me some time. I couldn’t cope with the fact that something was missing. I felt kinda anxious and unsafe and strong anxiety that I may need it but it’s missing. Even if I didn’t use it for long time. I had very strong connection to my belongings and I still do. I currently avoid the trigger to not lose control over myself. My family has never provided me with any support. They only talked to me “behave yourself” while I was out of control and it made it even worse. I also heard how immature and idiot I am. Now I’m confused why I actually experienced that

I used to think I was just bad tempered.. Id lose my cool over the smallest things.. But as I atarred looking into what it was that triggered me, I started realising it was usually a bunch of small things that would pile up, then I'd just lose it, kind of like shaking a champagne bottle and loosening the cork.. I have absolutely no control until I feel empty... I still try to tell my doctor that I want to be tested for aspergers but he keeps sending me to councellors for my "bad temper" .. Ive watched tons of videos and read lots of articles on autism, aspergers and high functioning autism, and OCD (?), and I have some traits of each of these.. I was born with klinefelters syndrome, so am I on the autism spectrum or is it my KS thats giving me these traits??? If I can find out then I can get help with everything else.. My last major meltdown happened at the end of a holiday I went on with my band.. 30 of us travelled to Scotland and London (its a big band), my travel details got lost in the few days before we headed off on the trip (I'd never been overseas before), so on my first plane ride from Australia I had nothing to eat - they lost my diet plan (I'm a gluten intolerant vegan), then when the trip started all my selected toyrs were missing, my phone card didnt work so I didnt have facebook so I couldnt contact members of the band committee (you can see where this is going), I kept getting lost while out and about (although I did enjoy that), but on the last day before the grueling 23 hour flight home, I was accused of losing a travel card I didnt even use.. I got told by a certain member of the group I owed them a further £10 the trip had already cost me almost $5000.. I wasnt going to give them a cent more.. She kept needling me and wouldnt leave me alone.. Where that card, wheres that card.. I exploded in the hotel foyer... I dont even remember how I got outside into the street.. For my "actions" I got a one year suspension from the group - I had never lost my sh*t in front of anyone in the group.. Three years on and it still upsets me... And I still dont know what to do when I have a flare up.... Look up "Wasamba flashmob" thats my group.. or was.. Ive since gone back but after the London incedent no one talks to me anymore - people talking about me and casting there version of the event and making me look bad... So I quit after being in the group for 6 years.. Now I feel depressed and ashamed and angry all at the same time.. 😭😳😠

I need some help here. My step daughter is so sweet and also so trying at times. She is almost twelve. We are trying to get her evaluated to see if she is on the spectrum. She really struggles with social cues, for walking and behaviorally at times. If she doesn’t have the attention the bulk majority of the time, I feel like she spirals out of control and makes everyone else around her feel anxious and miserable. She will sigh incessantly, stim like crazy (singing, tongue twirling, toe walking, eating her boogers, etc.) I’m at a loss of what to do because my other step kid often gets frustrated and anxious because of her constant behavior as well. He’s about 10 and even makes comments about why her behavior is so weird and so frustrating at times. Her mom doesn’t quite give her the attention she needs and we try to not overcompensate on our end, but still show her proper love and affection.

My 5 year old son was just diagnosed with high functioning autism and adhd. He just started kindergarten and is refusing to go to school and has an EPIC meltdown pretty much every morning. Most of these involve attacking my me and trying to intentionally hurt me. I've followed his pediatricians instruction on how to go about getting him therapy and help from the school and have also talked to his teacher, the counselor, his asst principal and have an appt set up with the school psychologist to set up a plan so he can be successful in school. I love him more than anything in the world but I don't really know how to calm these meltdowns down and get him into the school in the mornings. He's fine once he gets there and doesn't have anymore meltdowns but getting him awake and dressed in the morning is almost impossible. He's told me that being around so many people bothers him so we arranged for an alternate drop-off instead of the super busy and fast paced car rider line but nobody can even give me any ideas on how not to calm down or deal with him having a violent meltdown every morning. He won't calm down until he knows that we've given up on the idea of going to school that day. If we mention school later in the day he starts having a meltdown again. I don't want to ruin my relationship with him by just having to physically drag him to the car every morning because I'm sure each time we have to do that would just reinforce the idea is that school is a place he hates. I'm just at a loss and don't know what to do. The school doesn't seem to care and are more worried about his attendance and don't understand or care that he's having a really hard time and so are me and his dad. According to them I'm just supposed to get clawed half to death each morning to get him there and they don't seem to care if he freaks out or not as long as they are the ones dealing with him when he has a meltdown. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can deal with the morni g meltdowns and calm him down without getting hurt every morning. The way we are doing is not sustainable even for a little while and I just want the best for my kid but I just don't know what to do.

Chris unfortunately I can’t give you any solutions. I am 53 and at the beginning of the school season I still feel “discomfort” for the people going to school. For me it has not been a positive experience. I don’t have an approach that it will work but I can suggest what you can do next. Learn autism, speak with autistic people and try really to understand what they feel and how they think, starting with your own son. Ask him questions on why he is feeling like this when the subject “school” comes out. He will probably tell you what he needs. When you do that try to be as calm as possible, lower you voice, act slowly and do it in a quiet place or room. Learn from your son as much as you can and it will all be simpler with time. The only mistake you can do is to treat him like a “normal” child. Be open minded.

My brother is a non-verbal autistic 18 yr old. He can't feed, bathe, clean, or change himself. He's about 5'7" while I'm the tallest out of me, my mum, and my sisters with me being 5'3". I'm 19, my younger sister is 15, my older sister is 23, and my mum is turning 60. None of us are strong enough anymore to physically be able to help my brother when he has one of his violent meltdowns. I keep watching videos to help, but they all talk about autistic children that can actually understand more than simple words and sentences, and how to deal with their meltdowns by talking and reasoning with them. It's difficult to find out what triggers my brother's meltdowns because he's non-verbal. He just starts hitting himself, hitting my mum, me, and starts throwing breakable things, and running around. This endangers both him and us. My dad is his primary carer that would bathe, clean, change, and sleep with him. However, recently he left to see his dad and fix his teeth because it's cheaper there than in the Uk. He planned to go for 4 weeks, and told us 4 weeks. 4 weeks is really difficult for us but we were gonna try our best to cope. Without my dad, all of us have to pick up the extra work of taking care of him on top of our daily duties, such as working or housework. When my dad was home, he wasn't working because his full-time job WAS taking care of my brother. Now that he's there with his own dad and fixing his crooked teeth, he said that he has to extend his stay by 10 more days even though he left telling us 4 weeks. It's only been 1 1/2 weeks for us so far and he's already had 3 meltdowns. My mum is 60. She could get hurt really badly and so could my sisters. My brother could also hurt himself because there's a lot of dangerous things in our house since it's not done properly, like broken tiles in the kitchen, shelves instead of cupboards so fragile stuff is out in the open read to throw, etc. I'm autistic too and I feel his pain but there's nothing I can do.

My step daughter has a special need situation, she has many emotional outbursts, especially when she doesn’t get what she wants. Sometimes it will be everyday things like putting on cloths that make her meltdown. She has a learning delay and I think she is going thru dexlexia (not sure if spelt it right), also I’ve noticed she has a sensory deal. All in all it’s been quite a challenge because what works one minute won’t work the next, Sometimes I’ll work out for her to get she wants if she does a small chore or shares a toy and literally the next second it as if she forgots and then storms off. Also sometimes it works. I’m quite confused about to help her sometimes but confident other times.

My son's biggest trigger is being under-stimulated and changes to routine. He can't focus on anything for more than a few mins so I have 3 mins between him switching task. As soon as he's bored he'll start ruminating, saying strange words, shift in eyes, chant, start saying and doing violent and outrageous things he'd normally never do. He's 15, and his mentality age is around 2. Do you feel pain, and things look weird? Like you are not able to move with out pain? The sight is overwhelmingly harsh, sound is extremely harsh, touch is very painful due to too much touch and all of it feels the same, no warm feeling, no cold, no difference from comfort and pain? I wonder if this is what my melt down is... things get really strange. I have AS, though I also have that strange thing happen to me. It's like my brain is broken. I also get grumpy and irritated when there is to much going on around me, like too much noise and some one is trying to bother me, or talk to me. This I just get really irritated and grumpy, though breathing slowly and cutting out the sounds help that.

I do not agree with this comment: ‘this behaviour isn’t appropriate (referring to meltdown)’. It’s like saying to someone who’s having a seizure that their behaviours isn’t appropriate as they drop to the floor. Meltdowns feel horrible and are difficult to have much control over. I might be able to suppress for a short time (if I can afford the high energy penalty/cost). Please be kind to someone recovering from post meltdown and don’t blame a neurological response to sensory/cognitive overwhelm.

I don't know if those are meltdowns. I was told that I am just trying to get out of the bed situation, like making myself smaller to make people feel pity and do whatever I want without consequences. And I am not sure I am not, only I don't want to do it. Not consciously. Or do i not want to admit it? Basically, when someone is screaming at me - tears come out, which is not great, because people think I am crying on purpose? And get really angry when I cannot explain the reason of my tears. I guess, they think I am trying to make them seem evil or at fault? But I really cannot control it. And when I tell people that - they get even more upset, or blame me for being irrational. Even when I am trying to be as calm and mindful of my words - they loose all meaning because of tears. And sometimes I just can't speak at all. It doesn't always happen during conflicts, sometimes it just happens on the bus or at university. I don't think I get that much stimulation from the environment. Not more than usual, just my thoughts and anxiety gets to me. Then i try to distract myself - and suddenly everything is irritating and too real, but not distracting or interesting enough. So I am stuck for a while. Then I am exhausted, embarrassed and sad. So I tend to fail or give up on plans . Oh, and then I get scared to get out of the house (or bed). Which cannot be good for not feeling like a burden... I am trying to break this cycle, I am learning more about reasons for those episodes, and how to cope with them. Thank you for information

(I'm AuDHD, husband's got ME, possibly ND as well). Bleh. We're both having our own secondary meltdowns at the minute. I don't know what to do. But I was going over the kitchen a second time myself whilst sobbing it out this evening. Then tried to sleep (I bore brunt of violence and calming down earlier in the evening, let me husband rest, then it was my turn). Just gone 2am. Slewo until morning maybe. But not sleeping well at the moment. 😢

as someone who is an OCPD autistic, I find that meltdowns not being about (re)gaining control might not reflect the truth for everyone. as a very verbal, time-blind and probably partly aphantasiac person, I am very bad at being flexible and sometimes need to script things. sudden changes in how things are done can unchain a flight-or-fight biochemical cocktail in my brain. I do NOT have control over these meltdowns at all. it feels like something is taking control over me while my brain scrambles to negotiate mundane, daily parts of reality that had become its guiding lights in the dark.
