I really enjoyed these planishing videos keep them coming I remember when I first started metal shaping about 3 years ago I thought the only way to shrink metal was with a shrinker stretcher until I saw your videos long story short I can now make whatever I like and it pays my bills while doing something I love and it's because of people like you sharing so much thank you very much for sharing some of your knowledge with us.

Used this to repair a piece of aluminum trim on a camper, I was able to shrink the stretched parts and make the piece straight again. It’s a corner piece with an outer radius of a three inch pipe, one side is flat while the other is a flange. I used your shot bag and a cheap slapper from harbor freight. This was my first aluminum repair and it turned out fairly well. Getting the curve just right was a challenge, I actually laid the piece face down on my work bench and used a plastic caster wheel to roll the surface flat. The straight edge and block sander proved how well this worked. At this point perfectionist says pick and file, management however over rules this and a skim coat will finish this part quite nicely. After all it’s not a Bugatti. Your videos are great and for a hobbyist like me they are gold. Thanks Wray.

Me too, thanks for all the great videos. When you use heat, shot bag and slapper for shrinking, are you slapping on-dolly or off. Thanks, and Merry Christmas. Gerald.

Thanks for taking the time to show us these details. It was good to hear you say the goal of the videos was to encourage people to build their own bodies from scratch. I've just started building a cobra body from 3003 60 thou (1.5mm) aluminium and found the channel when looking for English wheel techniques. Thanks again for sharing all this experienced knowledge, (subscribed out of respect).

this is just the inspiration i need to be able to build a Toyota 2000gt one day, you break it down to a manageable and understandable process that i can decipher. i have done a few steel wide bodies and taking that leap to achieve higher perfection is all im lacking! love your work Ray!

Good morning !, I'm a repairman in Brazil, and aluminum is coming now in the new vehicles, I'm trying to understand how to do the repair, surfing the net, found your videos, helped me a lot, but one question, what material is placed inside the bags which do you use to counter? and the bounce tool, was a chair back steel? Grateful.Henrique.

Will this heat shrinking technique work with .020 6061 T6? I have a couple of small dents in my airplane that I would like to remove, but am afraid I will just stretch the area. I would like to know I can shrink it back, Thanks

By all means Wray, keep doing these videos! There are a lot of people that try to show how to do this on a panel but many of them do not have your expert ability! I love to watch and learn from you. Even though I am up in my sixties, I still want to learn ! This is aluminum. Is the same process in say a steel Ford Model A fender used with the shot dolly and slapper? Cove the videos. Thanks, Tom

Any chance of seeing the shaping and fabrication of a motorcycle fairing in aluminum? Thank you for the excellent instruction in your videos.

Keep a close eye on my E-Type Aluminum bonnet build video series. Part 2 will be videoed next week. What you make with shaping skill sets matters not, the skill sets are the same whether you are making panels for a motorcycle or a car.

Thanks for your videos, very interesting. Very sensible comments during the process. I myself, wants to know even more tip on OFF dolly process and when to use this tecnique. I'm not shure if I understand this in details : Typically when you weld in a new part into and old one, you get highs and lows close to the weld, which you want to adress (even after you have finished stretcing the weld seam itself)

Everything in shaping sheet metal is fulcrum and lever. Off dolly is changing your fulcrum position. Thanks !

Thanks for these videos Wray - you are an excellent teacher. I bet Harvey is like Tom Sawyer --- "Hey Wray....I have a great idea....why don't you do ANOTHER video showing that panel beating expertise.....yea....a little more over on that spot. Nah....not too long." ;-)

Good Morning Wray, I cant wait until I can get back to Charlton for more instruction and practice. I just have to figure out how to stop the intrusion of earning a living which keeps messing up my intentions of building a Masarati Tipo 61.

Cheers Wray! soaking it up here in Sydney,. . . Would the planishing process work with a powered hammer rather than chasing the lows with the slapper? Also can you do a vid with the same process but in steel, I am working an old ute body and wondering if the process carries over, have just bought your E wheel kit and soft dolly to further my experience, Hope to make it there one day. g
@proshaper5 жыл бұрын
Thanks glad you are finding value in my videos.😁 I prefer using the slapper and dolly technique over others. I personally have found that a handheld air planishing hammer or mobile English wheel can be cumbersome to use. They can work certain areas faster but on tight spots they can make a mess quickly. Developing your hand tool techniques is a very important component of mastering the mystery of moving sheet metal. I always have more respect for it technique over tool solutions I use my Proshaper shrinking discs on steel panels but only for highs that are under 1.5mm above that I shrink with the torch.

Gday Ray! Thank you for showing me these skills! I feel inspired to hook into to body panels of our Austin Healey 100/4 now. As the first step I think I need to remove Bondo from the panels without sanding, some kind of chemical stripping I guess?
@proshaper5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, use chemical stripper to remove paint and fillers. If the bondo is real thick you can remove it with a hear gun and putty knife. No sandblasting ever on body panels. Keep watching lots if good information will be coming.

Great video ,if you use a shrinking hamer i mean a small dented hammer and put the dolly straight under the dent hold the dolly firm and strike with the shrinking hammer lightly one by one you can fix the dents without bringing the hole area up and have to shrink it later .
@proshaper5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I am aware of shrinking hammers, I prefer to not use them because they leave scars in the metal. In the case of this Lotus it will not be painted just polished.

Wouldn't your sinking disc take care of most of this?
@proshaper5 жыл бұрын
I used to use my shrinking discs on aluminum but they do mark the panel. The scratching will sand out but now I like my new technique with the torch heat and the hand held shot filled bag.
