I was wondering about if you have to Anneal the metal on older vehicles? I noticed you tapped and did not hammer. I have an old truck I bought and the door is caved in. I can’t find another door so I was thinking about how I would get the big dent out. I learned metal working in jewelry. My last project was a Jamaican steel drum. I had to anneal the metal and put a bowling ball into a Gunny sack. Then gently began the process of caving in the steel drum. Then a used hammers to pop back the area’s for the sound. I got an “A” in my course. That was back in the day without internet.

Good work there with the hammer and dolly, I think it's harder to do that type of work on modern cars because of the metal that is used nowadays and metal finishing is questionable also because filing the metal makes it thinner
@LakesideAutobody3 жыл бұрын
Here's a bit of info relating to what you said: “Many newer panels are too thin to hammer straight when they are seriously deformed. Traditional metal finishing techniques are out of the question because files tend to skate over their high carbon metal or, if they do cut, they weaken the panels grievously or cut right through them. Even disk sanding them can be a hair-raising experience if you are not super careful.” Source: OLD CARS WEEKLYJAN 25, 2019 www.oldcarsweekly.com/news/sheet-metal-basics

It's very rare that a car is damaged w/o markings on the paint or serious creases that can't be PDR'd. You have to have a very "nice" dent to remove it with PDR - not usually the case in the real world. No disrespect - just being honest as I try to look out for folks that really want to learn auto body repair. I will look into it and do a video on PDR though soon - if I come across a dent w/o a scratch - maybe I'll have to create one with a soft object so as to not damage the paint :)

I’m taking the comet down to clean metal and I keep finding little rust spots. Looks more like a stain in the metal. I’m cleaning them as best I can and I was going to epoxy the whole car. I’m thinking that if I seal them it will be ok. We live in a dry climate. This car came from a wetter climate.

This honestly is the best way to remedy the oil canning. t will leave small dings but better than the popping in and out. The pointy end is basically for tapping down high spots. Shrinking hammers don't work very well - at least for major oil canning situations :

It would be even better for newbies like me, watching this technique for the first time, if you had continued to describe 1) what you were trying to alter 2) where the dolly is in relation to the spot and 3) whether your using 'hammer on' or 'hammer off' at that time to achieve the desired change. Otherwise, it looks like a bunch of random hammering with no understanding imparted.

The old boys would have got all the paint off first,dressed the panel to shape with a hammer & dolly then body filed and planished it perfect with a slapper .. No filler just primer and stopper . You ground the surface rather than leaving it 'natural ' for the body file to sight to .It's not difficult to achieve .

There's no easy way to say this it's a little bit on the rough side you shouldn't really not be teaching people such terribly bad techniques seriously you should have no more than 2 mils of fill on a easy job like that max and no big grind marks especially going against the shape of the panel you should really be embarrassed about this I would stop doing any more and leave it to some of the other guys that do a far better example even then there not perfect but good enough meaning you and a few others like bad Chad are a dead loss in the trade to many of you with bad very bad techniques if not no techniques but it seems that everywhere else in the world gets away with murder very low class mostly think they can charge good money for it giving the guys that know how to do a good job at bad name making them look like they're overcharging perhaps so you're not doing the good guys who have the experience any favours at all here you just make it worse for 80% is there are too many people out there with no common sense or mechanical knowledge to know what what they are doing wrong and what is a good job and now they see this and it's a big excuse for them to make a mess and for the next person who gets the car don't mean to be too negative but there's not much else you can really say I had to laugh about the finger on the hammer handle which shows you've had no experience or next to none 😞😞😞😞😕

It's best if you stop in at a few local body shops to find the truth on auto body repairs - stay away from magazine, car shows, TV, YT videos of folks that haven't worked in a real body shop - Check this video out for truth on filler thickness - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHrSf5urZptpftk and a 5 year follow up on a literal bondo bucket - will last out lifetimes too 'cause it's done right - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5XVfa2pr5eYgsk

Using a hammer and dolly is not rocket science. Hammer hits nail - hammer on. Hammer hits finger - hammer off - 😖😖
