This video shows how to install a Car Mirror over a failed Self Dimming Side view Mirror Glass. If your Drivers Side Mirror turned Black or Brown or Rust in color, chances are you have an electrochromatic Car mirror that no longer works and the glass is so distorted that you can no longer see out of it. Learn how to clean and apply glue properly so the heating element will still function and yes, all self dimming side view mirrors had heating elements, and are still working.

Installing a Electro chromatic Self Dimming Fit Over Car mirror
Many other car manufactures have created an electro chromatic also know as self dimming mirrors. In this option, the glass is actually a liquid that dims and heats the mirror. Due to the high costs of this mirror, we have the option of selling an electro chromatic fit over mirror. This is a mirror that fits over the old broken glass. The self dimming option will no longer function, but in most cases you will need to replace the whole housing in order to get your OEM product to work, and unfortunately almost all dealers only have the housing available for 300-500 dollars. Also in past years many made side view car mirrors that were electro chromatic using and electrical charge liquid or film. As year go by, they turned rust in color or black. So the fit over glass is an inexpensive option for these items, for at least until the junk yards have these in stock for a reasonable price. So be aware of this feature when you order. We do not sell a mirror that self dims. We do however sell mirrors that will fit over your existing self dimming mirror. For more information, please refer to the top of this page. To apply a self dimming mirror is simple. You DO NOT remove the old glass from the frame as these mirror are fused to the frame plate. When buying a self dimming fit over mirror from us, you should do the following. If you have a self dimming mirror that had liquid come out of the mirror when broken, please clean any oils and dirt from the outer surface and this will prevent the silicone to bond to the plastic. You must clean and remove any of the liquid that is on the outer portion of the existing mirror on the vehicle. This oil may contaminate the adhering process. Its best to use a power wash to clean the oil out of the frame. On the old mirror, take the silicone glue, and dot the old mirror every 1/4 x 1/4 inch 1/2 inch from the frames edge. Then take the new mirror place it over the old one, use an easily removable tape, and secure the mirror to the housing for drying. By doing this method, you have created a silicone pad between the two glasses. In many cases even thought the self dimming feature has failed, the heating element behind that mirror will still function, and by transferring the heat through the newly created silicone base onto the new mirror. I have a 1999 Chrysler Town & Country Limited. It has a self dimming drivers mirror that has started leaking out the fluid. As such, it’s gone opaque. I did what most guys do. I ordered a cheap new mirror from RockAuto (or your typical auto parts store). Then I happened upon Ray’s videos and parts website. Man am I lucky I did that. I was about to cause myself a whole bunch of headaches and extra work. Thank god I watched his videos and gave him a call. He walked me through the process and sold me the correct mirror - which for my application is a fit over style. Not a replacement version. I was ready to pry my old mirror off. Likely I would have ruined the heating element in the process. And then put on a crappy made in Mexico mirror that would likely blind me. Ray got me the correct mirror. And gave me the right advice on how to install it - saving me a ton of time headaches and costs. That inexpensive mirror would have cost me more in the short run in pain and aggravation. I paid a few extra dollars to Internet Glass, but well worth it to get the right product and the wisdom to install it. I believe in the adage “you get what you pay for”. Ray was helpful and followed up our discussion with emails, links to additions install videos and friendly advice. Nice to see that this kind of service still exists in America. And here is the best part. Ray is super knowledgeable. Clearly he has been in the industry for several decades. If you got a glass problem, likely he has the knowledge to help you through it. Watch his videos. Call him for advice. Most likely importantly. Order his products. That’s the value of his business versus a chain store. As a final note on my install. I compared the mirror I got on Rockauto to to the mirror I got from Ray. It was the wrong mirror and would not have worked. Ray knew that simply by my giving him the part number. This is wisdom you don’t often see in business and it’s worth every penny.

Great Video Bro!!!!!! I bought a 2004 Lexus RX 330 and I couldn't figure out why the passenger side mirror look like it had tint on it and the driver side mirror was clear. Now I understand the auto dimmer failed on the passenger side. Before this video I had never heard of auto dimming mirrors.

i replaced my bmw driver side mirror OEM parts. how come they look funky and looks not right somehow as it is blurry and distorted. what went wong ?

The Molding around the mirror gets compromised and the ark of the current invades the liquid inside.

I just ordered one of these for a 98 Deville. How do I tell the back of the mirror from the front, and does it matter? Both sides look the same?

If you ordered from me, you would have first surface chromium. If you look at the mirror on both sides indoors, you will see one side that is slightly blueish. That is the (backside) that is glued to the mirror. The front (outside) would be all silver. If you bought a Chinese mirror, you will see silver on both sides. If you look through the mirror you can not see through it. This means you will be blinded by the lights behind you at night. If you looked through our mirror, you will see across the street. That means it will absorb the light but however 20% less than the auto-dimming one that failed on you. Good Question Kent.

hey pal. much later reply of course but i have a mb that did this on one side. I heard that nasty liquid is toxic? It definately will stain paint and whatever else.....permanently ...unless you get to it QUICKLY.

Get it to a car wash if it leaking and power spray the liquid out.
