Auto dimming mirrors is part of the limited package as you know now 😂 I had a hard time finding a replacement for mine because of this same thing and I now all Jeep's aren't created equal . It always amazes me to see my 98 Limited ZJ has more features than most modern vehicles it was ahead of its time .

I heard that the dimming fluid in the driver's mirror is nasty stuff, mine was leaking, so it got binned very quickly. Couldn't get a RHD dimming mirror replacement, so had to lose that feature. 😔

Super helpful and interesting! Thank you for sharing your experience, man. The extra glass on driver side is because that mirror is self diming. So the space between mirror and glass is originaly filled with a brown liquid. But is finishes by leaking, hence that messed up aspect all arround. Mine is way worse.

Can't wait for the next video. My 98 zj 5.9 L obviously has the memory mirrors, but they adjust randomly every time I unlock the car. Because of this, I have to adjust then every time I drive. I'm hoping your next video shows how all of it works so I can try to fix mine

Project Dan H lol! Can't wait! With the research I've done, it has to do with the actuators loosing home. I was curious if all the moving you were doing installing the mirrors messed that up and caused you to have the same problem when you had it all set up.

@@OldsVistaCruiser depends on how warn the contact are. If the mirrors don't know they are where they're supposed to be they'll move on ya and the 1 and 2 button may not reset!

Hi Dan I just found your channel about a week ago and REALLY ENJOY ur video's. I have a 96 zj laredo and now u have inspired me to do some of the up grades you have done. I've been looking for the limited door panels to so a similar upgrade. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might find some? Hey Dan, great videos! I have a quick question. When you did the driver side mirror did you use the plastic back plate from your Laredo mirrors so the mirror would sit in it instead of sitting flush like it would on the limited mirror with the auto dim feature? Mine is apart but the mirror sits flush with that plastic plate not inside of it because of the trim that was originally around it like you showed and I was wondering how you worked around that?

@@ProjectDanH No worries. I ended up cutting 2 different ones up and hot glueing them together until I find one that’s a actual match haha. Different year zjs and styles seem to have different internal parts in the mirrors.

Its the contacts in the mirror assembly, you have to take the mirror apart and clean them.

I believe that extra wire on your replacement mirror is for the auto dimming feature, the extra clear glass may have something to do with the auto dim feature or may just be a protective cover over the mirror itself to protect the heating element? I have no idea about that extra glass piece though...I've never taken any mirrors apart LOL...I just know my 98 ZJ has the auto dimming rear view mirror...my previous 96 ZJ's exterior mirrors also would auto dim...there's a button under the rear view mirror that turns that on and off. The mirror's will kind of darken a bit like a pair of auto darkening glasses...really nice at night when people come up behind you with their bright lights on. Edit: Get a can of clearcoat spray to spray on over your paint, otherwise the paint will just fade in about a year. Knew a guy who did an awesome foilage camo paint job on his 92 Toyota pickup and about a year later the paint had faded out and all you could see was the gray primer LOL. Also, do you happen to know where to get that color of spray paint or what color its called? Wouldn't mind getting some to touch up a couple rock chips.

I ALWAYS clear... At least 2 coats! The only thing I didn't to was wet sand 😞. I figured road chips would eventually make wet Sanding a moot point. I got a couple cans of PJ7 chargold made up. You can get em on eBay or Amazon. They're not a perfect match but there fine for an ol ZJ. Yes, you are absolutely correct. That plate of glass and those extra wires were for the Auto dim feature. They go "dark blue" when you activate the rear view mirror. Well done brother 👍

@@ProjectDanH Hmm, seemed like the auto darkening glass in my 96 ZJ would go kind of a brownish/gold color when they would darken, maybe they got different colors through the years? I'll have to checkout the paint, thanks again. The driver mirror glass on my 98 ZJ kind of moves around on rough roads you can see it vibrating...wonder what that could be, probably the actual internals of the mirror causing it though would be my guess.

It has some sort of grounding issue cause when I turn on the headlights my gauges and back wiper blades and everything goes crazy

Start from the rear wiper switch wires and follow them up to your ignition switch and light switch in the steering column area. I bet there is a short. Make sure you disconnect any aftermarket accessories and unplug your battery

Thanks for offer. My 1994 limited 5.2l has power and defrost and it has two wires for defrost and two telescoping rods that came off with old mirror and I reattached to new mirror and popped back in and voila! I called Jeep and they had four different types of mirrors for that year.
