I was seriously thinking that my camera was malfunctioning (well, we can still kind of say that!) and did not find anyone talking about it as clearly as you did. Thank you so much! I have just started off with my photography journey and your direct approach in explaining things is much appreciated!

Because of this annoyance, I tend to shoot in manual with auto ISO and a maximum setting. It's the only way to guarantee the shutter speed doesn't go below a minimum. I use the front dial for shutter speed and use that to control my exposure rather than the exposure comp dial.

I think when you reached the max ISO you set, the camera will prioritize exposure and adjust the shutter speed below your minimum to ensure your exposure is right. It doesn't know if you are using a tripod or just hand held. Love the quality of your videos. Thanks!

sure. but it's stupid that the camera arbitrarily decides to override the very parameter that you wanted locked to a "no less than" in the first place... at least give me the setting "prioritise exposure or shutter speed"

Wow... I was struggling to understand why my Shutter Speed is dropping even below the Min. Shutter Speed I have set in Auto ISO. Your explanation clarifies it. Thanks a TON for the upload. Yeah, it would be good, if a message flashes if the min. SS value is going to drop. However, we do can see the SS number when we observe the viewfinder. It would be great, if camera's can introduce an option, to select handheld, or tripod so that... if it is handheld ISO should grow, if it is Tripod the Shutter Speed can drop.

Without reading other comments first my thought is that you can always set the upper maximum ISO to the highest the camera can do. That way the camera will behave more like the name of this function, at least until it reaches that ISO. I agree it would be great if the camera would flash a warning on the screen. On my A6300 the AUTO MINIMUM SS can only be adjusted in full stops. I stopped using the feature when I found myself wishing to use other shutter speeds; e.g. 1/1600s is not available on the A6300 as an AUTO ISO MINIMUM SHUTTER SPEED.

Most definitely Richard, setting a higher ISO upper limit would help resolve this issue...this was more a video pointing out the one issue with this setting, but in knowing that issue, people can work around it easily with the fix you suggested. It does have its uses but like you said, when you want to really refine the settings you use, that's when it is time to start using the manual mode or have iso on manual so you have the control over the camera and not the other way around. Thanks for watching 😁👍

For general photography I use this feature almost exclusively. It's just something you need to be aware of and keep an eye on your shutter speed when conditions become darker. At that point you can determine if raising your ISO is acceptable, or if you can handle a lower shutter speed given your current subject.

yes, actually with the sony camera I often use the slow/slower/fast/faster setting instead of manually setting the min ss, from what I understand the camera takes into account both the focal length and the presumed average speed of the subjects photographed so it does even more for me....

Thanks! I was wondering if there was something wrong with my camera. It really should just underexpose the photo and you would immediately know that something is wrong and either the ISO or the min SS is not enough. Hi David, Yes it has caught a few people out when first using it...but it sounds like you figured it out pretty quickly. As I knew how it worked from the beginning (thanks Mark Galer), that is exactly how I use it. If I am willing to go higher with ISO, I have to change Auto ISO limits. And if I want to let the camera ignore exposure, I go manual. I agree that the name suggests otherwise, but I think this is supposed to work like that from Sony. I would be quite irritated if they changed it ^^

Oh this totally got me. Got a x100v as an everyday camera and decided to use aperature priority most of the time for walking around. However, using auto iso and minimum shutter speed, I noticed the shutter speed kept going below what I set. I thought there was something wrong with the software!! Now I know better. They need an option in the menu to set a hard stop as well as a pop up saying you’ve reached the limit. I was so confused. But I’ve since realized what was going on.

I don't think it's weird. For me it makes sense, that after max ISO, that i drops. Should you not just increase the max ISO then? I have it on 80% of the time. So that my shutter lowest point will go to 1/60, so my images don't get blury, when I shoot handheld. BTW. Keep up the good work. It's amazing you have been going for so long. I really admire you passion and patience with continuing to make videos. In my opinion you are very underrated, and should have a lot more views and followers. Thanks for this. The shutter speed should never be allowed to go below frame rate without a deliberate override of normal default settings. I accentually shot a with a lower shutter rate once without even knowing it was possible (because it's so unthinkable as a deliberate design choice). That was a bitter lesson for no good reason.

I have set the max iso up around 3200 and the min ss is set at 1/1000 . But now my question is, prior to using this, I have always just used all Manual settings with the iso set to auto, so should i just keep using manual mode or would you say using the auto iso min ss is a better option for sports throughout the day. Thanks again guys. Cheers

You’ve really got it in for that intern, Mike😁. Clear explanation of the function and problem - common to other camera brands. Perhaps solution would be akin to autofocus preference: release shutter priority, or focus priority. In other words, option to not release the shutter when limits are reached. Does that make sense? To compound the problem, Sony (others, too?) cams don’t display the auto selected ISO value until shutter half press. Cheers!

You're in aperture priority and you've told the camera not to go above a fixed ISO setting So if the light drops and the auto ISO system reaches the maximum allowable ISO, the camera only has two options to keep a correct exposure if the light continues to drop - 1 is to lower the shutter speed and 2 - to raise the ISO. You have told it NOT to go above a set ISO, so the only option for the camera is to lower the shutter speed. And yes, it would be nice if the camera would alert the user when this situation happens.

Hi Mike, I use ISO auto min ss a lot and did have a problem with it when I first started using it for the reasons explained in your video. However when I accepted that the min SS is a target only and that exposure is prioritised if ISO and aperture are maxed out i.e. have hit their limits set in camera then I was happy with this as correct exposure is key. The reduction in the shutter speed in the way you demonstrated as the light dropped I found slightly misleading as what is the alternative, if SS was kept at target then image would be very underexposed. Also no account for the effects of image stabilisation that my make longer SS acceptable. I guess in summary I think this is a great feature but some basic knowledge of exposure is assumed but a warning that target is not being met may be a good idea as long as it doesn't get too obtrusive.

And that can be sort of acceptable behavior with just the ambient light, but doesn't seem to take the on-board flash into account either. Moreover from what I observed (and these were not rigorous controlled tests) using the exposure compensation dial to force the exposure down doesn't seem to work either.

Note If the exposure is insufficient even when the ISO sensitivity is set to [ISO AUTO Maximum] in [ISO AUTO], in order to shoot with an appropriate exposure, the shutter speed will be slower than the speed set in [ISO AUTO Min. SS]. In the following situations, the shutter speed may not function as set: When using the flash to shoot bright scenes. (The maximum shutter speed is limited to the flash-syncing speed of 1/160 second.) When using the flash to shoot dark scenes with the [Flash Mode] set to [Fill-flash]. (The minimum shutter speed is limited to the speed automatically determined by the camera.)
@dancheb
@dancheb 2 жыл бұрын
I'm just starting to utilize this function. So perhaps, I'm not fully understanding it, but I found a more serious issue in conjunction with the mentioned one. And that is when utilizing the flash. Not only it does not preserve the minimum shutter speed when shooting with ambient light (which you could argue might make sense as some safety buffer), it doesn't do it when shooting with on-board flash either. It doesn't seem to be capable of figuring out that it can raise the output level of the flash to compensate for faster shutter speed and thus preserve the exposure that way.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Good point ... I think they neglect a lot of the ways that flash could be incorporated into these slightly more automated systems they build into the cameras.
@dancheb
@dancheb 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikesphotography OK, so I have researched it some more and played around with the camera. First of all this behavior seems to be a common behavior across camera brands. Also the minimum shutter speed is not used at all when using flash as specified in at least some user manuals of other brands. Not sure about Sony. When turning on the flash, the shutter speed automatically goes to 1/60 as minimum. And if stabilization is turned on (Stedicam), this shutter speed is maintained irregardless of focal length. However, a camera like Canon EOS-1Dx mark iii has some special separate settings ( "Flash Sync Speed in Av Mode"), that can apparently force the camera to maintain the shutter speed within a certain range or fixed when using the flash in Av mode.

There's two additional issues that I experience with auto iso min ss on Sony cameras...1. In aperture priority/auto iso min ss, the shutter speed only functions in whole stop increments instead of 1/3 stops. Why Sony why?! 2. You cannot utilize a control wheel to change the auto iso min ss which makes it a multi-step/time intensive process to change settings quickly in environments where the amount of available light or the speed of the subject rapidly changes. Fuji cameras have 1/3 stop increments to solve #1 but I'm not aware of any brands that solve #2 directly. I haven't used Canon's Fv mode but I assume that may have improved functionality over Sony auto iso min ss.

If the noise is too much, you can use a program such as topaz denoiser ... also, if you don't like the amount of noise you are getting in party scenarios, the best bet is to start using a flash and shoot in manual mode with iso set as low as possible. This will mean you decide how much light is in the scene and how much noise is in the photos you take. I hope that helps.

However when i turn the camera to a lower light place, iso raises up to 25600 before ss starts lowering at 1/500sec... Why 25600 instead of native 51200 and how is it possible iso can go beyond 6400 range ?

Just tried this with my nikon z50. It behaves in exactly the same way. It is strange that it ignores the setting of minimum shutter speed. The only way I can see to fix this is if it would give you options on what you want to do next after it has reached the minimum shutter speed and max ISO. Auto ISO only seems to work like I want it in manual mode. So for example when trying to take pictures of animals I set my aperture to the setting I want for depth of field. I set the shutter speed to freeze or blur movement depending on how I feel and I let the camera figure out the ISO. That's the only situation I use auto ISO in to be honest.

Good to hear you've found a set of settings that works for you. It seems like most camera brands do it this way...it would be so much better to be able to select which setting has the hard stop...but I suppose the way around it is to increase the max iso limit. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi David, I'm guessing that is because they are some kind of advanced jpeg that are not supported by lightroom 6.14...or lightroom 6.14 might have a cap on the file size? My Sony 7Riii ISO AUTO Min SS is not working. It is a maximum shutter speed not a minimum. I set ISO AUTO to 100 and 102400, ISO AUTO Min SS to 1/2000 for some bird photography. Depending on the light, the shutter speed changes from 100 up to 2000. Shouldn't it be the opposite.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
I tried it out with my A7iv, and it seems as though it has an internal maximum iso setting of 12800 in the ISO auto min SS setting, even when the iso limit is set higher. If the camera can get 1/2000 and the iso in auto is determined to be lower than 12800, then it keeps the shutter speed to 1/2000. However, as soon as it hits 12800, it doesn't want to go any higher and starts to adjust the shutter speed accordingly. The best way to get around this is to shoot in shutter priority at 1/2000 if that is your most important setting, or even manual with auto iso. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching 👍

My Sony a7iii is overexposing on a bright day. My settings are, Auto iso min ss 2000 F5.6 Multi metering 0 exp comp. Drive mode high Focus mode af-c Iso auto min 100 max 12800 The iso tends to stay at 12800, even though I’m tracking a bird in the bright sky. I don’t want to bring the iso max down in case the auto iso min ss takes the shutter speed down. Lens limitation prevents opening aperture wider.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, It sounds like you need to set your camera up a bit differently for bright days. It sounds like there is enough light about on those bright days when it does over expose, so for those days, I'd shoot in shutter priority with auto ISO, I'd then use my exposure compensation dial to control the exposure, and this would probably give you some better exposures. It's all about experimenting until you find a setting set that works for you ... and you probably need different ones for different shooting environments. I was photographing a pro kitesurfer a few years ago. When I was facing the sun, I had to drop the exposure compensation down to -2 and when he was side lit, I had to crank it back up to 0. I hope that helps. 👍

You're basically taking the camera past the settings you have set, so it is overriding them. It would be so much better if Sony would give us the option to have it as a hard stop so we could tell the camera to never go past the shutter we set.

auto iso min ss is very confusing. it doesn't work as you expect. there should be a way to keep the desired minimum shutter speed dropping when max iso is reached. this becomes an issue when shooting handheld. Better to increase max iso instead. it's better to have a noisy shot than a blurry shot.

This video is just highlighting the reason why people start to see the shutter change again when using this feature.
