See why I think the ISO AUTO Minimum Shutter Speed or 'ISO Auto Min. SS' is Sony Alpha's most useful custom setting. I discuss why shooting in Aperture priority with a modified ISO AUTO Min. SS setting offers several advantages to shooting in Shutter priority mode. I also demo how to assign the setting to a custom button for fast access.

Unless I’m using lights when I’m totally manual, I am an aperture priority shooter and use auto iso all the time. This KZbin video matches my experience exactly and good to have my experience over several years confirmed. My C2 button on my A9 and A7Rii are set to Auto ISO Min Shutter speed. I use C1 for focus area consistently on all my cameras. Thanks for the videos (sorry “movies”) Mark.

As you explain so well, ISO Auto Min. SS is a very useful feature. However, although Sony acknowledge the use of non-native manual lenses by providing a Focal Length setting for SteadyShot, it's a shame that that information doesn't appear to be passed into the minimum shutter speed computation, because it seems to have no effect at all on shutter speed when in Aperture Priority mode.

I didn't know the A7 III could go down to f:11 until I saw this (I just bought one). I thought I was going to be limited to f:8 so thanks for that. My favourite trick with motorsport photography is to go as low a shutter speed as I can while maintaining accurate panning and focus. I have shot bikes at Phillip Island at the bottom of the main straight at 1/30th second. Always a pretty low keeper rate with that strategy but frankly, lower with some cameras than with others and when you get it right, the results can be spectacular.

Great video Mark, thank you, you have a wonderful gift for teaching! Minumum shutter speed is an awesome function and I used to use it very much back in the days I had a Nikon D3100 DSLR. I purchased a Sony ZV-E10 last year and was very disappointed to find that the setting that I had on my 2010 camera is not available on the small Sony mirrorless (it did not even occur to me that it could be missing in any modern camera). I know the ZV line is targeted mostly towards video creators but I believe this setting should be available on all cameras and still hope Sony might implement this with some software update later on...🤞
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
It's unfortunate that Sony feel the need to reduce the complexity of their menus by deleting features they don't think basic users will use. The missing ISO AUTO Min. SS on the ZV-E10 is probably due to the fact that the A6100 entry-level camera (that the ZV-E10 was based on) did not have this feature. I would like Sony to see just how important this feature is and put it in the their Fn menu on all cameras.
@ac4pres310
@ac4pres310 Жыл бұрын
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Wow, I did not know that the a6100 did not have it either 🫢 The menus are already big (but this is also ok to give us lots of options) and frankly one more line would not have made any difference for me in that matter. Going back to my D3100, it was also an entry-level camera and it had it 13 years ago meaning it cannot be so difficult to implement technically (especially seeing the higher a6400 I believe already has it). I hope they do eventually see the need to implement it as a standard feature. If you make a petition I'll sign! 😄

I love my Alpha 7 camera. this a helpful video. Sony has done its best to make the automation helpful, but its a lot to remember, if you are shooting in less than usual conditions. bike shots were, I presumed all panning shots I did wonder if/how this 'help' is implemented in the A99 A-mount camera, which is reputed to have clairvoyant AF the ageing menu system, needs revamping, imo. flip forward screen, added lcd utility would be helpful, maybe the V (5th) series will get those. - so Sony keeps it tech. lead.

This is incredible, I had no idea you could access this setting via a custom button! This makes Sony's min. SS implementation the best I've seen, and honestly I'd consider switching from Fuji for that feature alone. However, in your kookaburra and dog examples, I personally would have preferred to max out the max ISO and let the camera honour my min. shutter speed, because as you said you set those speeds for a reason (to freeze the motion). Anyway great video, and greetings from Brissy :)
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 4 жыл бұрын
If you respect the shutter speed you will underexpose the image. I would rather have more panning blur than underexposure.
@MrJed_s
@MrJed_s 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaCreativeSkills but if you don't respect the shutter speed you could end up with subject motion blur, camera shake, or both. Let's use the dog example specifically. At the start you mentioned that you wanted 1/4000 to freeze the action, but later you show that this is lowered to 1/2000 due to your auto ISO limit to achieve the correct exposure. But according to your logic, 1/2000 isn't sufficient to freeze the action, so motion blur may occur (if 1/2000 were acceptable, wouldn't you just set that at the start?). And I'm not sure the panning example applies here, since you were actually trying to lower your SS at base ISO.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills I think I finally figured out why I found ISO 50 with what I thought was Auto Iso. I put ISO on the control wheel on the back of the camera so that I can change ISO easier by simply rotating the wheel. I changed the ISO to auto when I took the camera off the tripod to use it handheld and I must have knocked the control wheel without realising it and the ISO switched out of Auto to 50. Many lessons learned. Please excuse my inexperience. Thanks.

I think I highlighted this when I discussed the fact that in ISO AUTO Min SS exposure is protected, i.e. the Selected Min. SS is a target and NOT a fixed setting as it is in Manual and Shutter Priority Mode. I also raised the point that if aperture is a variable in Shutter Priority I may lose focus tracking or deny me the depth of field I require to ensure my subject is sharp.

@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
1/250 sec is one of the selectable options. I selected this setting when shooting the MotoGP race. If the aperture is set to f/11 and the ISO has reached its minimum setting of ISO 100 the camera cannot hit this 1/250 second in bright sunshine without overexposing so will select the nearest shutter speed which is 1/320 second - which effectively is the 1/3 stop and the actual shutter speed I was aiming for.
@kirkelicious
@kirkelicious 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks for the reply! I can work with that, no doubt. But still it would be nice if we got that more precise option. Cannot be difficult to implement in a firmware update. It could save me 2/3 stops of ISO in some instances. And you know how nerds are...
@bryanstephens6007
@bryanstephens6007 2 жыл бұрын
I use aperture mode when things are relatively static or in busy situations to get focus. I have a related question though, on the A9. you can only set full stop ISO range for Auto ISO? If you manually select the ISO then you can do .3 ISO stops. My old A6600 could do it but the A9 doesn't seem to(yes I have firmware 6.0). So in Auto ISO you go from 3200 to 6400 to 12800!
@zoe20641
@zoe20641 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. As you state in the video, with AP and Auto ISO, the camera will prioritise the exposure by lengthening the shutter speed. It seems that this can lead to camera shake so we may end up with a properly exposed blurred image or group of images. Whereas with Manual and Auto ISO, the camera will respect the shutter speed that was set and will underexpose the image, which can always be corrected in Post. At least the image will be sharp. I believe the camera lets me know when the parameters I set cannot be met and will lead to an underexposed image by the fact that the ISO is flashing in the EVF and therefore I have to alter the parameters I set to produce a proper exposure. Am I correct in my supposition as to why the ISO is flashing? Thanks.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the ISO flashing. Choosing underexposure rather than shooting at your specified Shutter Speed setting is certainly an option - just watch out for instances of over-exposure using Manual as blown highlights cannot be recovered in post.

dear mark : great video, may i ask one question, what is the difference if i use manual then set auto iso ? then i can both fix my shutter and aperture , let the camera choose the ISO ?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
If you use Manual with Auto ISO you have to keep an eye on exposure. It is possible to overexpose or underexpose images using this workflow, e.g. if You select f/8 and 1/250 second on a sunny day you will most likely overexpose your shots as the ISO cannot go lower than 100 when set to Auto.

As with your camera, my a7r3 also has an ISO Auto Minimum setting restricted to 100, which one would expect. Since I formatted the memory card after backing up the photos of this last trip, there is no way I can verify if the camera actually used ISO 50 and that perhaps LR made an error reading the metadata of the file. Just raise the upper limit ISO Auto can use. The choice is not between noise or blur when using ISO Auto Min SS compared to Shutter Priority or Manual Exposure with ISO Auto, it is a choice between a slower shutter speed (but only if your max Auto ISO is set too low) and under or overexposure.

In lowlight or shade, shooting lifestyle portraits in changing light, I often use auto iso in manual exposure mode at 1/250 sec Shutter to stop subject movement. Can I successfully add Off Camera Godox Flash in TTL mode on a Sony A9 camera without causing other problems.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Godox flash sometimes has trouble syncing at 1/250 second unless you are in HSS mode. HSS mode lowers the power output so you may have to lower the sync speed to 1/160 second to avid HSS.

Hello, when in Aperture Priority mode on my SONY A7RV, I set ISO AUTO and Minimum Shutter Speed, the camera does not comply with the selected value of min. shutter speed, and continues to determine it by itself. Why?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
The Minimum shutter speed is not a fixed shutter speed. In low ambient light, and when the cameras reaches it maximum ISO value in the Auto ISO range, the shutter speed has to fall below the minimum in order to get an appropriate exposure. If it falls too early raise the maximum ISO in the Auto ISO range. In very bright ambient conditions the shutter speed will be faster than the minimum you have set - agin to protect the appropriate exposure. In instances such as these, Shutter priority mode with its fixed shutter value, will lead to under and overexposure.

Mark, when setting ISO Auto Min. SS to Fast or FASTER with Auto ISO on, does the camera first go to the maximum set ISO. THEN adjust the shutter faster, or differently. And if it does max out the ISO, isn't that compromising the image?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
It will use the lowest ISO in order to achieve the minimum shutter speed you have selected. The ISO only 'maxes out' in very low ambient light. You can of course lower the maximum ISO in the ISO Auto range if you don't want the camera to use very high ISO values in low ambient light. When the ISO maxes out, the shutter speed starts to drop below the minimum shutter speed you have selected in order to protect 'appropriate exposure'.

A7RIII is F/8, A7RIV, A7III and A7C is F/11. A9 before firmware upgrade was F/11 and then after the Firmware upgrade matched the A9II at F/16. The A1 Supports PDAF at f/22. The online manuals list the figure for each camera if you are unsure.

I am relatively new to photography and I am confused. If you set the Auto ISO Minimum SS to 1/200 because you don't want the SS to be slower, like 1/100, shouldn't this feature be called ISO Auto Max. SS. After all, 1/200 is the Max SS (longest) the camera will allow, not the Min. (shortest) the camera will allow. What am I missing? Thanks.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
It’s a target ISO that will be used so long as it doesn’t compromise exposure. If the ambient light is low and the Auto ISO has reached it’s max limit shutter speed will be slower than the target ISO set. If the ambient light is very bright and the minimum ISO has been reached the shutter speed will be faster than the target (typically only when the target shutter speed is set slow for achieving blur while panning in full sun). When using Shutter Priority under of over exposure will result as Shutter Speed is respected above exposure.
