Yet another case where a shop recommends close to $3,000 wither of auto repair work on a 2018 Nissan Versa (only 3 years old) with 41,000 miles. The question is Do You Really Need The Work Done? Why is it so much? What's the most important repair? Always get a second opinion, specially when the price is high.

My elderly mother received a $512 labor estimate (parts extra) to replace the valve timing cam solenoid on a Chevy Equinox at a Las Vegas Pep Boys. I then drove 2,000 miles one-way to do the job for her. She stood over my shoulder for the fifteen minutes it took me to replace both the intake and exhaust version of the valve to clear the complaining trouble code. She goes, "Is that all it takes?" "Yep, that's all it takes!" Seriously, there's enough business out there to keep everyone in the industry well compensated with honest repairs and prices. Flippin' thieves.

What was the labor rate for the job, you do know all shops charge what the labor rate is, I've done jobs that charged 2 hours and finished it withing 45 minutes. It's ridiculous what is recommended to do on some of these jobs and more than half the time you dint need to do every single step.

Not in the real world. Honesty has no relevance to competance. I can't tell you how many times someone thought I was trying to rip them off, strictly based off of the dollar amount of the estimate. They get it done "cheaper", by an "honest" mechanic, and are satisfied until the car breaks down on the side of the road. Granted it's hard to find a service writer than can actually do their job, and communicate properly, but that's another story.

I've have mechanics leave grease spots/streaks around the door handle and on the interior because they didn't remove the their gloves or wash their hands. It's the little things that people remember. I'm not familiar with how long brakes typically last on Versas, but seems like the owner must be braking pretty aggressively to have already worn the pads down like that and have some heat spots on the rotors after only 40,000 miles. IDK, maybe normal wear and tear, but my car has 53,000 miles on it and the brakes and rotors are still in pretty good shape.

To be fair the tech did a phenomenal inspection. You confirmed every thing they said was needed. Now if the company wanted to charge a premium for the work that is on them. You don’t have overhead nor a waiting room to pay for. You also perform great work. But working out of your house vs owning a garage and having to pay overhead are 2 different things. Keep up the good work on calling out scammers! This was a good job by the tech performing the inspection. As you know techs don’t make up the prices the service department does. Also do new rear drums come with bearings or would you have to transfer them? I have not run into any cars where the rear drums have to have the bearings swapped over. You could have save yourself time and money but I have not worked on a 2018 Nissan.

If anything, Hector did, by putting cheap duralas silvers on the car, when no honest shops would be caught dead using those shitty brake pads. @@654Crossman No where in my post that I ever claimed that I know everything :). I do know that $450 is less than $2700. You said "Hektor did most of the things recommended by the initial shop" but you failed to say that Hektor only charged 1/6 of the $2700 quoted by the other guy. Hector also said that the lower control arm bushings still have years of life ahead of them and the owner will put in the new battery himself...so I don't see any problem with that either. OK, cheap brake pads... I give you that! Hector could have used Akebono pads or some other premium pads, however, that wouldn't make Hector a dishonest mechanic. He did honest works and charged reasonable price. You must be the guy from the other shop :).

@@paulc2548 the brake pads he it sed were duaralast silvers. Those specific pads are not used by any decent shops. If you look at the initi as l invoice, the shop was gonna use golds. That is a difference he knows. Additionally, the shop didn't say when to do the CA bushings. It was in yellow, indicating they are worn, and will need in the mew future. They said the struts were bad and quoted me $251 each for the struts with 1hr labor each side. (basically $800 for 2 struts) One of the local major brick and mortal stores had the exact same struts for $162. RockAuto had them for $85. And in the end...it wasn't the strut making the noise...it was the upper joint on the sway bar end link that attaches to the strut...so it actually only cost me $13 to fix the noise. I just can't get over how much the shops mark up their parts when they have to know we can look the prices up online instantly. And then to get the diagnosis wrong...I basically just wasted an hour of my time.

One more point about buying new rotors vs refacing used rotors. I agree new rotors are quicker, cleaner and look nicer. But even a new rotor could have internal stresses in the rotor until it’s been heated and cooled for a few cycles…finally it relaxes and you may get have some runout. So when you reface it that second time, it’s not only smooth again, it’s now really stable also. So besides being cheaper, another benefit of saving a used rotor and refacing it (like Hector did) might be a truer rotor, which means smoother braking. Of course, I’m assuming there’s enough rotor material left to do so safely, Tell me if I’m wrong, since I’m not 100% sure about this! Ive owned like 20 cars over the past few decades and have done brakes quite a few times, both ways.

outter pad was worn slightly more than the inner but that’s usually due to not being greased and them sticking. Those pads are easily half life still. 2. You need to learn to lock tight your bridge bolts before it bits you in the butt, there’s a reason there’s lock tight on there from factory. 3. Put brake grease on the caliper piston and fork. This will make sure your backing plate doesn’t get stuck to the caliper causing “uneven wear”

My gm dealership wanted. $6k+ to fix everything wrong with my 09 Impala. For less then $500. I fixed everything myself. One of the major things they said I needed was a head gasket because mines was blown. Since I had "bubbling in the overflow tank and milky oil." Well I checked my oil and it was clean and new(had just changed it.) Next I checked my radiator cap..sure enough it was bad. Replaced and bleed the system. No more bubbling in the overflow tank. My so called "blown head gasket" was a bad radiator cap.

They have a long waiting list and if you want an appointment schedule it 3 to 4 weeks out at least. Customers will travel up to 6 hours to go to this auto shop. When honesty and clear fair prices are you came a long line of customers becomes typical.

You'll notice a major amount of road rash on the front passenger bumper. Driver obviously hit something or was hit. Very possible that a lot of this damage was due to that. It would make sense for things like the bearings at least. If you hit something hard, it'll destroy those. Brales and belt are unrelated. Not defending Nissan or anything because back in 2010, I was looking at getting a Nissan. I decided against it when while at a dealership, I was looking at a brand new Rogue and the grille fell off just from me touching it. At that point, I noped my way off their lot. Its great that you replaced the grease on the on the slide pins and that you replaced the break hardware clips. But why didn't you clean the old dirty grease out of the slide pin holes ? All that old grease gets hot breaks down turns acidic collects dust and causes corrosion in the pin whole which causes them to seize . And you should have also removed any rust from the bracket where the clips go and greased under them also to prevent rust all which can cause the pads to stick, drag , wear out prematurely and squeak.

This is why I have no respect for Firestone. I went in because costco tire broke a mounting stud for my wheel(they were going to pay for the fix but they dont do it so they said go anywhere). Firestone was the only one that would do it right away(covid had just started). Its a 2007 hyundai elantra but i take good care of it, and always have it maintained at the hyundai dealer(Zimbrick is a big company that owns many dealers in my state, they have an in depth inspection everytime u bring the vehicle in for free). Firestone kept pushing me to do $2700 worth of stuff, on a car worth $2500. I kept saying no but they kept pushing. I took my car into multiple dealers that do free inspections and they all said everything looks great, and that it’s actually in great condition. Heck, one example is firestone telling me my cabin air filter is tearing in places and needs to replaced asap, multiple dealers told me the cabin air filter is perfectly fine, heck, it had been replaced 3 months prior.
