Customer took his vehicle in to the dealership (Longo Toyota) and was told that he needed brakes replaced in the front and rear axles. This is all too common in the auto repair industry and is the reason mechanics have a bad reputation and are labeled as crooks.Don't throw away your money, avoid the dealerships at all cost.

i trust my mechanic, I've lived as an Adult in both America and Australia [born in England, dad was an engineer and transferred] and I found great mechanics in both places who would refuse work over things i was suspicious but wrong about, including brake pads; and charged me honest to a fault prices for the things that did need doing. Problem is you need a good mechanic, my dad and father in-law have a knack for finding shops who are meh at best [though tbf neither are fans of dealerships, even with boomers many believe dealerships are ripoff artists only fit to do warranty or emergency only they can do it work]; family and friend recommendation isn't always enough. Sometimes its online reviews too and the 3rd or 4th shop you try. That Toyota owner is lucky to have you.

My dad used to be an auto mechanic. He lost his job at one place because he refused to cheat a customer. An old lady came in with some engine trouble. My dad traced the issue to a bad floater valve, which back then was $5 in parts and 15 minutes tops to fix. His boss tried to tell the lady she needed a whole new carburetor. My father refused to lie to her, and was fired that day.

Way, way back, I took my car to the dealership that I bought if from (new), for a 'routine' checkup. They gave me that 'brakes need repair' line, but could not show me the originals as they had already disposed them. Then there was a delay in getting it back, 'waiting for parts they said'. Took 2 days. Got in the car, and within 3 seconds, I realized that the driver's door was a REPLACEMENT as the armrest buttons had scratches, and mine did NOT. They never owned up that they had damaged the door, and replaced it. Never went back again.

A lot of mechanics are like this believe it or not. The reason why people always say mechanics are shady, is because dealerships and other companies, force mechanics to sell stuff the costumer doesn’t need. I’ve been written up because I told a costumer he doesn’t need the tires and brakes the dealership told them they needed (the lady came in for a second opinion). A co worker told me my manager got angry because I let an “easy sell” go out the door. This doesn’t mean there aren’t bad shops out there. A lady with a brand new Mercedes got a flat tire. She went to a shop and they told her she needed a brand new tire, when the car had 30 miles on it. Long story short I fixed her tire and sent her on her way.

@82dupont

Problem is that local shops use aftermarket parts which have declined in quality. OEM parts last a lot longer than aftermarket parts. If you can do your own work, it’s great but if you can’t, then you are paying for inferior parts which will need replacement sooner, and your paying the labor rates sooner as well. There are certain things that can be done aftermarket but for bigger jobs and seriously important components, I would go to dealership and pay a little extra.

@@82dupont the shop I and my family go to do allow parts to be either oem or aftermarket (they do highly recommend oem for electronic parts though), and do allow brand preferences and don't milk out labor costs to make up for not supplying their own parts. The other shops where I live will insult you for even bringing up the idea of using anything other than what they supply, and its not even oem, it's whatever they get the best price for. Only reason I don't like dealerships, or at the least the 2 in my town is they always gave me the runaround. My 2012 taurus had a keyfob stop working 1 week after buying the car in 2019, they refused to give me another fob. Got charged 200 bucks just to get told they couldn't fix my problem. They suggested replacing transmitter modules for about $3k and didn't even think it was the key fob. The shop I go to immediately said it was the fob, and to order a new one off amazon. My last visit to the dealership, I got charged 100 bucks because they actually tried programming my dead fob (along with the new one) that was never gonna work, I didn't hesitate to give them a 1 star and tell people to avoid getting ripped off. If you can find a good, honest local shop that does match dealership quality at a better and fairer cost I'd call that a diamond in the rough, I'm very thankful and always refer anyone their way.

I went to the lady in the waiting area and informed her and she replied that she just had them replaced a month earlier. Needless to say I did not come back to work. But overall, some of the mechanics are lazy too so it's hard to justify who's who. I used the same mechanic shop for nearly 20 years. I am not a demanding customer. I do not pester when the vehicle is done. I do not get upset when I catch their mistakes. Yes in 20 years I caught mistakes. However the last vehicle I ever had them work on truly was a rip off, and that I will not take. Vehicle needed a new timing belt. I get it back, and it is stalling at low temps, I check codes it claims coolant temp sens out of range. Now, I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not ignorant either, I return it to shop and tell them the code, and that engine management was fine before their repair. They "fix" it, and charge me another 200 bucks. Now the vehicle is stalling in high temperatures. I check the codes and again coolant temp sens out of range. Now I'm irritated, and I call them back and mechanic tells me it is the fuel pump. I'm livid at this point. I am disabled and working on cars is no longer a choice. So I decide to pop the hood, I go to the coolant sensor next to upper radiator hose housing, unplug and replug in sensor. Problem solved. Took me 5 minutes. Now you might be wonder, why I didnt do this in the first place, well because I had assumed that during the timing belt job, they may have screwed up a wiring harness, or a ground, that I could not reach. Also, because I paid them to fix the car. LOL Needless to say I never went back.

I’ve no idea why people panic over doing brakes, it’s one of the most easiest job on cars. They’re incredibly easy to change... 2 bolts on the calliper , 2 bolts on the bracket. Push the piston back in, slide the pads onto the bracket with some copper grease. A dealership quoted me £1000, I could do it myself for £400 to £450 (and that’s OEM prices)

Brakes are quick job that if you half ass the service; you can get it done in less than 30 minutes. I used to work at Toyota dealers in the service department and I've seen some of the most shady crap that made my stomach turn. I took pride to be honest with everyone. Didn't matter who you are or how much money you had. I used to feel great dealing with women customers when they were ripped off before coming the store like they were originally told to replace a tire when it could get repaired. I used to live for the feeling of "Aww...Thank you SO MUCH for your honesty..." when they told me that when I drove the vehicle back to the service drive. There was one time that a Prius owner needed new 4 tires. I was in the service drive dropping off a vehicle and overheard the owner saying how much she HATED loosing air in her tires. Sure enough; I had to install her tires for her. I unmounted the first tire and saw major bead corrosion on her wheel. I spent the extra 15 minutes cleaning her wheels off and applied bead sealant. I brought the vehicle up and she was waiting outside for it. I told her how I spent the extra time and cleaned all her wheels. Once again; I get large thank you. I don't understand how difficult it is to apply sealant prior to installing the new tire???? I know I would been one of those master techs with large black book of repeat customers if I started my career lot sooner than 32. I stepped away from it and went to work directly for Toyota at the Camry plant.

I have my phone with me to watch it step by step, pause, rewind, watch again, probably took me longer to do it than a mechanic but it did a couple of things, one, it gives you confidence that you can actually do it, two, you know next time when a mechanic is trying to talk to you about it and third, even it cost more time, you save your own money. I can do brake works, standard tune-ups, oil changes, sensor changes, air and cabin filter changes, all standard maintenance stuff. Would have never thought in a thousand years that I could, but did and once you do one, you want to learn something else, pretty cool. I know that now. I had a Goodyear repair shop here in MA that replaced a perfectly good drive shaft. They quoted a price of $180 for parts plus labor. I found out the shaft was good and only costs $80. It also did not resolve my problem with the Transmission. I eventually found the problem myself. The wiring harness to the transmission was rubbing on the engine block which wore through the insulation and shorted out on the block. I fixed the wires by putting butt plugs between the wires that were showing and then put a radiator hose with hose clamps around the section of wire harness and it fixed the problem. I'm by no means a mechanic, but I just looked around for anything that might be obvious. I traced the wires from the computer modules as one of them controls the transmission and I found that and fixed it which fixed the issue.

I really hate dealerships (stealerships), and most car repair places. Luckily, I've worked with the same place for like a decade. I always bring my own oil, my own parts, etc.. Just have them do the labor when I need something done. They are great and never mess with me. They know I do most simple stuff myself (like engine and cabin air filters, light bulbs, etc.). I don't do my own oil because it's a messy job, and, they only charge me $15 in labor if I bring my own oil and filter. I have to admit, even though they don't mess with me, I've heard them on the phone with customers, and, customers in the shop. Giving the standard, "well, you can still drive, but, this part may go bad at any time, it should be fixed for safety". Fast lube places are the worst (haven't been to one in like 10 years), but, I hate how they take out the air filter and show every customer, then try to charge like $50 to $80 to replace it. Those filters cost $15 or less, and, don't even require any tools to change. Takes like 30 seconds! Usually they aren't even close to the end of their life, just have a bit of darkness to them from being used a while. They can go 30k miles. Just replace them yourself every other year (I do mine usually just once a year, same time I do my oil, just to keep things simple and all done at the same time; usually replace the wipers then too. I just use the cheapest wipers available, so once a year in spring works for me to replace).

Me: Looking at tyre that’s worn by only 2mm Dealer: You need a whole new axle and control arms, the wheel is leaking blinker fluid.

I had the same happen to me from a Goodyear auto shop in southern CA. When I was told I need new brakes I told them I’ll replace them at home since I had lifetime warranty through Autozone and when I lift my truck the brakes where at about the same thickness at 8mm

Good job Hector! The mechanic would've left the vehicle for an hour and charged the customer for a job that's already done😳🤔🤬💩🤯🕑

I don't know how you came up on my recommended list, but as someone who lives in the SGV, I gotta say that it's great to see that there are some good mechanics out here. Also, not sure why so many thumbs down, it seems like you did everything the way that I would in my garage. Heck, you even used the torque wrench, which I don't even do until a week later. Maybe because you didn't hang the caliper on a wire like all those fancy garage videos suggest? Anyway, great to see a local doing good stuff on here, you deserve more subscribers! EDIT: I know where I recognized your voice! Months ago I watched your video on how to fix damaged clear coat! Good video as well, keep it up!

Isn't he just as bad? He had to have seen how much life was on the brakes before he removed them yet he continued to do the job

KZbin is a wonderful resource for doing basic auto maintenance. I replaced a caliper with ZERO prior experience.

That happened to me at the VW dealership in National City, CA. I bought a certified Tiguan, a month later it needed some warranty work, when I took it in, the dealer tried to tell me the brakes were at critical limits. I took it back to the dealer I bought it from, and they showed me they were almost new. WTF!! Dealers are shady as hell!

It's nice to see honest mechanics make the right call. I used to sit in the dealer lobby waiting on recalls and warranty work and hear the service writers pushing gravy work and work just like in this video on elderly people and women. They would use words like just about time, almost time, you should get this done to make them feel like it was a safety issue or something bad would happen if the customers didn't buy the services. Some dealerships pay commission on work that is sold, that is why they push for services that are not needed. Good job Hektor!
