This Auto Sears was designed and manufactured at Tomioka. They sold it to many camera manufactures including: Ricoh, Sears, Mamiya, Chinon, and several other European retailers. It is the big brother to the Auto Chinon 55mm 1.7 reviewed on this channel, and I left my experiences with the 1.4 version in the comments there, noting the center sharpness, unique bokeh, and cool colors. It is a joy to shoot, and oozes character no matter the format of film or sensor. A quick note about the lens construction: the rear element stands proud of the metal casing, and the edges can get chipped fairly easily. I ALWAYS focus to minimum before unscrewing the lens as this retracts the rear element into the lens making chipping unlikely.

Great info, although I immediately put a permanent adapter to Fuji on it, as I do to all my vintage. It gets a little nutty when the lens and a Sears body costs me 26 bucks and the adapter 14...

Did Tomioka make Yashica lenses too? I remember reading that Yashica owned Tomioka at one point but don't know if that's true or not. Yashica did make some of the Carl Zeiss Contax lenses in Japan of course along with the Yashica ML lenses.
@nathandavis50999 ай бұрын
@@timatwater8247 Yeah, I'm fairly sure Tomioka made my Auto Yashinon 5cm f2, kit lens for the original Penta J. I also think the Tomioka factory made a lot of the Contax C/Y lenses after Yashica bought the factory. I'm not as confident about the Yashinon DX and DS lenses. It's possible that some were made by Tomioka, but that others were made by other manufacturers. Those are series I'm not as familiar with.

Yes I would absolutely love one of those! It is very rare to find it here in Brazil. Even the rikenon is hard to come by. Been following your channel for a while now. Recently I managed to grab a meyer - optik oreston and it just triggered a horrible desire to collect vintage lenses. There is nothing like it. The character and rendering of these senior beauties rekindled my photography. I was somewhat annoyed by the sterile precision of.their modern counterparts. Now, I feel back on the saddle again. I would like to thank you for the excellent videos (the soundtrack and bumpers are absolutely fantastic. They bring a smile to my face everytime. It never fails ;-).

The more I learn about vintage lenses, the more I realize that photographers who used them when they were marketed really could not go wrong. With very few exceptions, all were more than good enough for casual/amateur/snapshot taking. We didn't realize how good we had things in the sixties and seventies. Yes, I was there then. The only lens I ever owned that frustrated me was a Visitor 35mm f/1.9 on my Konica SLR which rendered only soft images. Now we have pros saying 'sharpness isn't everything' but I assert that to be true, it should be acknowledged that for the vast majority of use-cases, sharpness is the *first* thing. As far as I can tell, 50mm lenses were always more than sharp enough and this video offers further evidence.

I've been very impressed by the Auto Sears/Sekor SX 55mm f1.8 lens that I recently won in an auction on eBay for $8.50 (and $8 shipping). The glass looked very rough in the poorly taken photos of it in the listing and looked even worse when I got it, but it cleaned up really well. Its only fault is that the focusing ring is a bit stiff but I can live with that. I'd really like to see how it compares with the 55 f1.4 of this review. It's very sharp with great color, to my taste, and can render strong 3D pop at the right aperture and in the right light. And there are rumors it too was made by Tomioka.

Another fantastic lens with the Sears name is the Auto Sears Macro 55mm f2.8. It’s quite rare and a bit expensive, but a really great lens! There is also the Auto Sears 105mm f2.8 but that lens is even harder to find. Sorry you weren’t able to adapt the lens from the Zorki 10. I haven’t tried adapting it yet. From my experience each fixed lens has different quirks about the adapting process. Sometimes they are very easy and sometimes almost impossible.

@ Vintage Optiks VO, I need your help/advise please. Just scored this exact lens on ebay and also the same Fotasy helicoid adapter you have. I'm having problems though focusing the lens whenever the helicoid is extended, even just a little. Let alone fully extended. Doesn't matter the distance from lens to subject, lens will not focus if helicoid is opened up. The lens will only focus if the helicoid is fully closed just like a normal adapter without the helicoid. Am I missing something or maybe the lens is defective? Is there something I can try?

Hi, what you describe sounds very unusual. If I use my helicoid adapter, whenever I extended it, the lens simply focuses closer than the normal minimum focusing distance. And if I fully close the helicoid adapter, it simply acts as a normal adapter. But it can always focus on the subject no matter how far I extend it. Of course when it's fully extended, I have to be super close to my subject to get things in focus, but it still works great. It's basically the same thing, as when you attach extension tubes. If you want, you can make a little video of the issue you are describing, and send it to me, so I can see if there is something I can help you with. You can e-mail me at: vintageoptiksemail@gmail.com Cheers!

@@VintageOptiks Thanks Vintage! I'm with you, it does seem unusual to say the least. Your explanation of how the helicoid is supposed to function was exactly what I was expecting. Unfortunately, mine is weirding out. I will further add though, after I contacted you, I purchased another helicoid (Yeenon) and the same thing is happening. I wonder if it could very well be something peculiar to my copy of the lens? I'll try to get together a snippet of video to share with you. Thanks again Bro!

You are welcome! It’s very strange that even a second helicoid from a different manufacturer will give you the same issue. Send me a video and I’ll see if I can help you figure this out. Cheers!

I'd love to receive this lens in the giveaway! this focal range on a crop sensor makes an excellent portrait lens.
