Once again. my notes/review as someone who works as an automotive painter: -good that you did a test panel, nice edge to edge application of the colour. -great to see you start with the edge of the panels like the bonnet to make sure you have full colour coverage although some of your low spots like the underside inner lip of the wings could have had a tad more colour. -something you could have done is flicked the cans spray fan out to the side when you where stopping spraying. just stopping could leave hard lines in the colour showing where you sprayed. if it had any metallic sparkle in the paint you'd see the job as very streaky/patchy. -contrary to Taylor thinking it was cringe id say he did a decent job with the colour on that front bumper. as for the orange peel on the door, with colour you want to go relatively light and slow, peel at this stage isn't massively important. -for the lacquer you could have used a 2k rattle can. what this does is allows for a more robust finish that will be chemical resistant. it does this by having an active hardener you break into it that makes the lacquer rock hard. with the colour and lacquer you guys used regular paint thinners could be used to wipe the whole thing down to bare metal. -to stop the can spitting make sure to clear build up from the tip every once in a while by either wiping it or hold can upside down and spray for a couple of seconds. as you already stated you just needed more lacquer on the vehicle as it looked fairly dry in some places, but you cant help a lack of material in the moment. to fix it I would 1500 grit sand the whole car smooth trying not to cut through to the colour and then give it 2 good coats of clear. was it a good paintjob overall? I would say barely, however the knowledge gained and your open honesty to show your mistakes makes me feel this project definitely wasn't a failure. to anyone viewing this as a fail I would disagree and say in my opinion the project size was simply too big for beginners to attempt. people can do ok paintjobs at home, but i would say its better one panel at a time. safety point: you should have all been wearing goggles and suits, the airborne paint will get into your skin and into your eyes. (if i don't say it someone will comment it to me saying i missed it...) summary: as a painter this makes me cry inside. as a viewer it was absolutely amazing to see you and Taylor try this out and it wasn't a terrible effort especially with the cost and experience level applied. well done and thanks for making me smile.

In about 1982 I coach enameled my Hillman Imp in its original deep blue colour. I took a piece of the interior trim to a paint supplier and they made me up a one litre tin of enamel for £7. The old boy in charge asked me to bring back the car when I had painted it to show the lads how rich enamel can look. My friend Jack had a small domestic garage, he took a brush out of an old jam jar of turps and painted one half while I did the other. We spent an hour maybe on it and just shut the door on it. The next day we drove it out and were gobsmacked at the results. A depth of shine off the scale, not a single run, no brush marks or dust in the paint. I redid the white stripes down the sides, refitted the chrome trims. Several mates who were sprayers and body shop owners would not believe the results. The old boy at the body shop/ paint shop got all his staff to inspect the car and they did not believe it had not been sprayed in a body shop. He used his gun gizmo to measure the depth of the paint which was equal to 7 or 8 coats if sprayed. He knew how good it would look as he spent years brush painting London buses. He told me over a cuppa how as a young man many top line cars were enamel painted. I was a chuffed 18 year old with a shiny first car.

As I said a litre, I think we were metric back then was £7 made to the colour code of the car and to match the sample from inside. It really did turn out so brilliantly for my first ever attempt. I have since painted my ex British Telecom grey Austin Maestro van in metallic green Hammerite using a foam roller and brush. I bought about six tins at maybe £2 each from the bargin shelf in B & Q. It was parked on my front garden driveway when one night two hooded guys were trying to screwdriver the locks. They did not hang around long as I fired my hunting catapult with 20mm stainless steel ammo from my bedroom window down onto one of them. He is lucky to be alive. I knew they were working the estate my mates had been targeted. The police forensics man came to take finger prints the next day until he saw the textured paint finish. That van still looked better than what Alex and co. have done.

Painting a car is like playing Poker. Takes 10 minutes to learn and Years to master. One tip I have found out when using spray cans is I will shake them then preheat to bring them up to a reasonable temp I do this by soaking the new cans in nearly hot water then shaking them again and always trying to spray with the cans at a minimum of 25c. Warm paint cans along with crazy amounts of shaking before and after and during to stir helps prevent stuff like the tips blocking that will ruin what you are painting.

I painted my BMW 340i's front bumper with rattle cans and also kind of screwed it up again, so sanded and give it another go and it ended up IMPRESSIVE. Nobody believed me it was spray-can painted :) I used a 2k Clear with great quality on the 2nd time and that made a LOT of difference. Also after 45 mins of drying, pulled it outside to the sun for "cooking" for several hours (about 6 hours at 95 degrees F). A week later I 2-step polished the bumper and that's it. FYI if you'll be polishing it to perfection, make sure to add a TON of 2k CLEAR lacquer on top of the color. That thing wears fast :D

Well you guys got the sanding experience. I took my 911 to bare metal. Then I gave it a few coats of primer, smoothed out any dents in the metal and then wrapped it with a cheap matte black wrap. I will say wrapping the car takes forever but it has its benefits if you can’t achieve a professional paint job. Spent $20 on sand paper, $90 on a high quality orbital sander to use with my air compressor and $470 on vinyl wrap. 75ft x 5ft of material so plenty of left over roll

Actually spraying the paint doesn't really matter so much, (though obviously the better it is the less work). Its the prep and finish that matters. A mate of mine used a paint brush to do the engine bay on a mk9 Jag years ago, it came out smooth as glass when he was done.

I've done this earlier. Yes, with rattle cans. Sanding, primer, sanding, primer, sanding, color coat 2x, clear 2x. And THEN, started wet sanding the whole car with P1500,P2000,P3000 and a two step polish to mirror shine as well. Good things: Once I finished with the polishing, the panel looked like factory new without any bragging. Problems: After a week a shine was gone, the whole car looked like rubbish again (Mini R53). Rattle cans are fouken expensive, what's more, they got so so little amount of goodie in it, that this makes it horribly spendy, especially when you are trying to spray paint the whole chassis, not just a certain part, or a panel. Solution: Make some research, read, watch KZbin videos, experiment. After that is all done, buy a decent air compressor with the necessary bits, buy automotive paint and 2K primer/ clear coat for a FRACTION of the money you would spend on rattle cans. This way your clear will be 3 times harder than a normal rattle can clear, and when you realize what a completely rubbish job you've done on the car, you can still wet sand it, polish it, and after all that shitestorm, the car will look good, and hopefully stay that way, for a couple of years. OR NOT. On the other hand thank you guys so much for this part! I had to reverse each bit to have enough time to laugh. :D

I know EXACTLY what happened. The boys were sat around chatting about the respray and someone asked "How hard can it be?" and as we know, that is a fatal question. And as it turned out, the boys were truly ambitious, but rubbish. All we needed was for someone to yell "cock" and we had Top Gear Bingo. But to be fair, kudos for having a go, and showing the crappy job you did, and then not just playing it off as the plan all along. So to answer the question; how hard is it to respray a whole car yourself; VERY. And you should get a professional to do it. And ultimately, it means you've given good consumer advice...

The small area and curved surface hides all manner of sins, and the gap from the painted bodyshell allows a degree of colour mismatch. Done a few of these now (on older cars) that look more than acceptable. For absolutely everything else, just pay a body shop.

I did a decent rattle can job on my mum's old Lancer bog patches. 2 coats primer, 3 coats paint, 3 coats lacker & came out beautifully... but stuck out due to clear coat sun yellowing on the 30 year old car.

Solid effort! better off using 2k single stage much easier to work with than cellulose, if you have a compressor and guns til only cost circa £200 too!

You'll have to try coach paint and a roller. Or MOD paint and a roller. Piece of cake, no runs, loads of people do that with their campervans, you would never know they were painted with a roller, they look good. I will say though, I used to spray paint commercial vehicles, mostly the box trailers, curtain siders and car transporters, the finishes were spot on 😁

Done a great job tbh for good rattle cans. But it's all in the prep on painting and don't apply too thick but good job lads.

I've wanted to try this for a while. Thankyou for persuading me never to try it ever ever ever. Might still try the self-levelling roller technique one day though, because I'm obviously an idiot.

This is such a blast and honestly if we do the same - who cares for the little imperfections, when you can say that you've done it and spent the time on your little lovely project car yourself?

You needed to sit the spray cans in warm water for 10 minutes prior to using them. This raises the temperature of the paint in colder weather and let’s it atomise more efficiently. Also, for a more professional result you can buy hand grips with nozzles triggers that clip on to the spray can.

Mate I feel your pain! I re-painted my Moto Guzzi, most of it went fine (rear mudguard came out like glass). Then it came to the tank; got dust in the colour, right, flat that back, bugger, gone too far so another coat of colour. Then petrol resistant lacquer; first coat, fine, second coat, the lacquer reacted with ITSELF!? HOW?? FML! 🤦‍♂️ haven’t had the inclination to redo it and it buggered up 50 quids worth of decals too…😑

Dana aka youngstatic is proof that at home paintjobs can look fantastic. Edit: 10:45 "it's so spitty" that's exactly why you leave rattle cans in a hot/warm water bath prior to using them. ESPECIALLY when it's cold out.
