From the looks of the color of the carpet on the passenger side, it could be that your heater core is leaking. It’s common on 850’s & S70’s. The dash does not need to come out and can be accessed from behind the radio. Check out Robert Spinners videos on how to replace the heater core or how to check it. I did it on an S70 I flipped and it took me around an hour.
@AutoAuctionRebuilds6 ай бұрын
Later in the video I show what it was. No issue anymore.
@Thesecret101-te1lm6 ай бұрын
If the heater core is leaking there will be a smell of anti freeze (maybe hard to feel with all the mice poo....) and also when turning on the fan the windscreen will fog up even when it's not that cold outside. Probably has to be cooler than now though, but still. I recommend setting the ventilation thingie to flow air only to the floor before switching on the fan after the car has been parked, to at least avoid getting some antifreeze on the windscreen...

Old Volvo: One owner, serviced at Mercedes-Benz, clean body and interior, clean CarFax and a recent timing belt/water pump service... Hmmm. Sounds like that car was previously owned by an elderly person. I wanna say they died, it sat and now recently sent to auction. Yea, their children gave the car away and it ended up at auction. I want to say that the car probably was running and driving fine right before the owner died. (My assumptions... Im sure Im wrong.😂)

Hi 👋 Randy,..great video on your Volvo 850. I love those older Volvos. I've owed both a 1994 Volvo 850 wagon in red and a 1995 Volvo 850 sedan in dark blue (my favorite). Before those two 850's I also had owned a 1987 Volvo 240 wagon in light blue. Great cars. Take care and keep up the great work.
@gregdcross6 ай бұрын
I had a 93 240 wagon - light blue with Volvo 5 spoke alloys. My daughter named it Penny Penobscott. I was the 3rd owner, it had over 150K on the odometer. Owned it 2 years and bought it from a sessions drummer who lived outside Nashville. He loved the car because it was the only car that could haul a full drum set and still habe room for 2 people. The quirky things of the car was it had every option but no cruise control. And those fuses.... I hadn't seen that style since the old Beetles. The 240s and 850s were the end of the era of Volvo making durable reliable cars. Shame.

Randy, don’t throw away the rubber floor mats that were on top of the original ones, unless they are damaged. The original ones were not that great during the winter time. Also, you mentioned that the fuel sender unit is unobtainable. Try checking the salvage yards first. Also, Volvo has parts that would work from newer models. Like 740’s and 940’s. The 850 is on the P80 platform, which covers 1998-2000 S70/V70 and 1998-2005 C70. Try looking into that.
@Thesecret101-te1lm6 ай бұрын
In it's home country, Sweden, the factory floor mats were rubber. I've only seen fabric covered mats in Sweden on a C70 which was their luxury car at the time. I recommend checking salvage yards for rubber mats. Note though that the fabric covered mats have rubber underside (at least the C70 ones do, and they are btw marked 850 on the rubber...), so even though they aren't great in the winter, they at least keep moisture off from the actual carpet. Re fuel sender: It has to fit the instrument cluster though. Not sure which are compatible. I recommend checking the spare parts catalogues for the different cars. A company called genuine classic parts with a web site that is gcp plus the top domain for Sweden (hoping to not get filtered here...) has those catalogues for free for all models from the 1960's up to about 2000, and they also have loads of NOS parts. Grab those catalogues as pdf files and keep them for future reference. If the part number is the same for a part between different car models then it should for sure fit. I did a quick search on the site bildelsbasen which is a site that almost all salvage yards in Sweden use, and didn't even find a category for the sending unit. I would think that the reason for there not being any for sale is that it never goes bad, or rather that it goes bad so rarely that they don't bother list it? Btw not sure but I think that if you have something that makes the gauge cluster think that there is gas in the tank, either a working sending unit or perhaps just a resistor, the engine computer might turn on the out of gas warning light if it detects a fuel delivery problem. I might be wrong here though.

This thing flys and has the best seats Volvo ever made . so there are four sunroof and two trunk drains ! You will love it ! May be one of the best seats you will ever feel in comfort and lumbar support !
@Thesecret101-te1lm6 ай бұрын
Also there are drains for the area between the windscreen and the engine compartment. If that is clogged maybe the cabin air fan filter might get wet? And more importantly there is also a drain for the AC. I would rather have the AC drain clear and every other drain clogged than the other way around. In that hypothetical pest or cholera situation I would for sure choose a wet/damp interior over mold growing in the AC system. All these drain at the same spot as those for the sunroof. Not sure if it's separate drain pipes or if they are shared; I would think that they are separate. Btw to me a sunroof is a budget choice from back in the days when AC were a luxury option. I'm on the team who really don't like them. The worst are the cheap after market ones. Unfortunately one of my vintage cars came with one of those. I had to tape aluminium foil (the type that you wrap your chicken in when you put it in the owen) to the inside of it both to avoid having sun on my head and in my eyes while driving, and also to avoid having condensation dripping from it...

Randy sir, You really made out with this car and I’ll tell you why. I have 99 Volvo S70. Found it in PA at a dealer who got it from an estate sale and it had only 47,000 original miles on it. I won it on eBay for twenty two hundred and twenty five dollars which I felt was a good deal considering the car was hardly driven for the year. Had it all gone through to make it road worthy safe again and it’s now my daily driver and I love it. Everything works on it and it’s great on gas. No turbo or sunroof which I’m with you, I hate them. My brother who is a firefighter going on twenty five years says these cars are as safe as they come and really hard for the jaws of life to cut into. Volvo did it right and not cheap out on materials. Basically what I’m saying in a nutshell is that if you take good care of them you’re basically driving a bulletproof tank of a car. Hang on to it for a while and see for yourself. My trim on the roof is doing the same thing. My car is silver so I’m going to do what you did and see how it comes out. Also, one last thing, thank you for showing me how to check the trunk drain plugs out. Can’t wait to see how she turns out. You and your family stay safe from them tornados. 🙏👍🏻

Something fun with the Dominos hooptie ? Does it involve explosives ? It does look better with the black stuff peeled off of the roof trim, but it really stands out. I think I would hit it with some scotchbrite and blow some semi-gloss black paint on it... I agree about sunroofs. I've had numerous new pickups and they all had sunroofs. I think I may have only opened them about 5 or 6 times total. 99% of the time I had the shade pulled. I was so happy when I got my new Yukon because for some reason it doesn't have a sunroof.

Don't know what's available in the US, but if it had been my car and it needed new tires I would had had a look at salvage yards for 17" rims. Not that it really matters much but it seems like on these Volvos 16" and 15" are considered the boring ones, while 17" and larger are the cool ones... P.S. you probably know this already, but there are various add-ons that fit the stereos on all Volvos from the 80's and 90's that have a CD changer connector, that gives you an aux input, bluetooth receiver and/or is a complete media player (just insert a memory card with all your favorite tunes), and also there are DIY projects to do this too. The CD changer connector is electrically the same as the Alpine M-bus (Alpine was the OEM for the top model SC-900/901 stereos, and also the amp in the C70, and probably other stuff too), but the physical shape is different. You can easily make an adapter by cutting the pre wired CD changer wire (if the 850 has one of those, the C70 and S70 has those) and solder a standard DIN connector to fit an Alpine CD changer and/or any CD changer intended for Alpine M-bus stereos. Just providing an aux input or bluetooth receiver might add enough value to the car that it's worth doing that before selling it.

Back in the 1980s a fella bought a car at the Marshall Auction in Red Hook Brooklyn and found a body in the trunk. Another guy bought a really nice food truck (roach coach) still filled with food and infested with cock roaches. Everybody sat in the front seat and inspected that truck including me but bailed when the cock roaches started falling from the ceiling. The guy that bought it for $25.00 was from Poland. He said the only way to get rid of the roaches was to drive it upstate then into a lake. That was his plan.
