I've had great runs with Mazda but my latest now has some Euro Ford parts I it. I feel it won't make the high miles like my old ones. The water got up to the bottom of the seats it was on low ground, it had one little gremlin for about 15 days after where the gauges would flash, but then it stopped.

My 02 liberty had the same problem .... ignition switch that made brief connects/disconnects ...from the heavy bunch of keys ring-attached to the 'ignition' key was 'swinging'. Worn out tumbler assembly inn the ignition switch.

My old Nissan truck did that, but hey it was an 84 with 285K miles. It was popping out of gear, started with 1st, then spread to 3rd and 5th. No grinding when slowing down but there were the synchros indeed.

Libertys have a reputation for having transmission/transfer case issues, which is why people avoided buying them throughout its production run (btw, most of those transfer cases were made at the now defunct New Venture Gear plant in East Syracuse, NY).

My dad had one for about almost 80k miles bought used from a jeep dealer with about 100k. He replaced the AC compressor, the radiator, coolant reservoir, and front driver side wheel bearing. At 150k miles the transmission failed and it was replaced with a junk yard one that worked well however shifted harshly when going into overdrive, so shutting off overdrive fixed that. At about near 180k miles one or two of the cylinders lost compression (my dad mistakenly used thicker oil since he wasn’t aware about weight, which might had contributed to the problem). He decided to sell it as is to the mechanic and bought another car. It was fun and great in the snow even with all season tires, however reliability simply wasn’t there in comparison to my mom’s 00 Sentra which was scrapped at 200k due to rust, but barely had any problems in its entire life.

The trans probably needs a shift fork and maybe a slider-usually an easy fix. Dead and shorted batteries will wreak havoc with the electrical system and can damage the diodes in the alternator. May want to check the alternator wave pattern, if you decide to keep it longer.

Since it been yrs I wonder if he still has it I know I just bought a used 2004 jeep liberty runs just needs the transmission solenoid changed its automatic and its don't go into 3rd fully but it's runs good for a used car I'm thinking about fixing it up and keeping it for a while and I see you definitely know alot about cars good information 😉

When the battery or alternator went bad on my Jeep Wrangler 4dr (unlimited) the electronics would go crazy. When it was the alternator it also would bog down. Just slap a battery in it and I think it’ll be good

I bought an as-is 07 Liberty for $800. One alternator and AC compressor later as well as a quick brake job and it's driving like new. Still needs a paint job but that's easy. Gave it away as a Christmas present. Point? I fixed it instead of crying about what was wrong with it. For a channel with the word Rebuilds in it, I don't see a lot of rebuilding.

Its a jeep thing most wouldn't understand, the chatter is probably the clutch pulley on the ac or Alt , that state farm thing is a unit to read driving habits, it supposedly makes it so they can lower your rates

My guess is that you have a bad battery and a bad Alternator. When the voltage regulator goes bad it can overcharge or discharge your battery which is bad and it can also spike putting out more voltage which will cause you lights to be really bright and then it can reduce the voltage which will cause you lights to be dim. That grinding noise could be a bad throw out bearing or bad fingers on the pressure plate.

You should have picked up my ‘05 CRD Liberty from St Louis Copart. I took excellent care of it but the insurance company totaled it due to hail damage. If I didn’t already have another ‘06 in the wings, I would have kept it. It went for about $1,500, too. That person got a great deal!

We have a first year 2002 with the 3.7L, 2 WD automatic. With 93K miles, it still purrs like a kitten and will haul butt when needed. Only repairs were a water pump, radiator and (of course) the rear window actuators. We just put new factory paint on it, clear coat was shot, and it looks showroom new. Really cool little SUV and would never trade it for one of the current Fiats in disguise.

Yes dead batteries affect newer vehicles with flickering. Not all vehicles do it though. Modern charging systems have trouble keeping up with the charge and maintaining all electronics.

Don't know about Insurance auctions but copart don't let ya test drive them so it's a gamble for everybody! Had a chevy equinox do all the electrical weird stuff to when the 2yr old ac delco battery crapped out. The jeep needs a complete clutch.

Hey Randy, Many cars that are deemed a total loss do not always get branded salvaged. Some states have laws that if a car is a certain age (by model years) it keeps it's clear title. Each state has different laws and definitions of their total loss threshold. Another thing is that many times an insurance company will total a car just because future problems could arise that are related to a claim made, which by law they would have to pay for(for example, flood cars). The chance of having to buy a main computer for the car or an engine will make an insurance company total the car instead of trying to save it. This is because the last thing an insurance company wants to do is to pay out twice. They don't want to pay to fix it, then have it go over their state's threshold for a total and then legally have to pay out the market value to the owner as well. I was an insurance adjuster for 3 years in the north-east, just thought I'd some info. Good luck with everything

Rattling is the throwout bearing. Squeak is either the same or an idler pulley. Popping out of gear is very likely the syncros in the trans are screwed. I could get transmissions for those all day long at the pick a part for 150 bucks. Takes an afternoon in the driveway to throw it in.

I always thought the Liberty had the 3.7L V-6. I would like to get one of these and shoe horn a 4.0L Straight 6 as the AMC 4.0L was the best engine Jeep ever had.

Most had the 3.7l, some had a 4 cyl, and a few were diesel. The 3.7 was decent. The 4.0 was a GREAT engine though.

Hey randy just some advice , when you get a car with a completely dead battery don’t jump it and try to let the car/truck rely on the alternator with a dead battery. The alternator will go up and down in voltage to 18 volts . That’s 18.volts to the computer and other accessories . NOT GOOD .. that’s how computers get smoked. In this case I bring jumper cables and hook them to the big jump box on the floor of the car

Just buy a battery for it let it run for at least a couple hours. I had a problem like that with the dodge neon. The alternator was bad as well. 1500 Texley not bad you could always swap the motor those motors are easy to swap out and work on for being a 2 Wheel Dr..

I wouldn’t want it. I could tell from the beginning it was junk. I’ve seen so many cars that I can tell. I used to drive cars through the dealer auction. As well as through an insurance auction place in my area. You can tell when they are junk. I would take it right back through the auction again or take it to copart and sell it there.

I fixed a Grand Cherokee Laredo 2003. Replaced radiator, hoses, fan, serpentine belt, battery, windshield wipers... With no jacks, no special tools. I didn't spend my time complaining. I just did it.

The flashing lights are the alternator and grinding noises. Check what voltage the alternator is putting out. If it's all over the place, then it's the voltage regulator in the alternator. I have a guy that fixes them for 40 bucks. The noise is the bearing in the alternator

Yeah, the lights will go out if low voltage causes an interrupt in the communication bus. The transmission sounds like its low on fluid and the fact that you've driven it might mean it's too late, but some transmission fluid couldn't hurt.

Pop the caps on the battery and add water if needed. the state farm thing monitors your driving so they can charge you every time you brake to hard, speed, acceleration on your bill

I recall that the fuse boxes of some Chrysler cars are known to fail. Before you send it back, maybe you can check the wiring going into the fuse box.

Popping out of gear is usually caused by a bent or worn shifting fork. The screeching sound could be caused by a bad throughout bearing.

I have a 02’ Liberty Sport. It’s the 3.7L 6-Cyl automatic and it is an absolutely wonderful car, gets done what I need it to and then some but I heard negative things about the 4-Cyl engine. If you want to put on bigger tires and go mudding you may have difficulties with it.

If its battery good another common cause is the alternator you can try put a friction modifier in it and check the clutch plates

Bad battery will do that. Without proper voltage they freak out! Computers don't read properly. Trans is another issue. Pull the handle to open the glass. Great video Randy! Waiting for more 59!!!!!

The chattering almost sounds like it could be the clutch, not the transmission. I would think a new battery would fix the flickering light problem. Chrysler vehicles are very sensitive when it comes to voltage.

Hi Randy good video. I had a 05 liberty 2.8 diesel lights did that put new battery in it 1 week later the alternator melted from the charging wire to the inside thank god mom stopped at the grocery store it cooled down.

State Farm module is the check your driving for cheaper insurance. Basically, if you are a safe slow driver, you can save money.

When I had my 2004 Jeep Liberty it was very bad. The fuel pump was bad. The battery was good. Every time I’d turn off and do something else and come back and turn in on it had a crumpling noise so I’d always go to the trunk lift up the trunk mat and hit the fuel pump and it’ll be ready to go. This happened millions of times. I sold it right away.

Had a similar issue with the lights flickering on a 05 Grand Cherokee, was the turn signal switch/actuator. Replaced and never had the issue again.

Voltage regulator on the back of your alternator. You have the "red battery light of death". You may need a new battery but I bet the problem is your voltage regulator, same happened to me on my 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited S. My dash lights would flicker, my radio would stay on, my nav once started up onto the "Jeep" home screen and froze there, had to unhook the battery to turn it off. I put a new proper Valeo regulator into the alternator, no problems anymore. Check out Legit Street Cars video on the Mercedes "red battery light of death", it is a Mercedes electrical system.

The flickering of the lights turned out to be the Voltage regulator on my girlfriends jeep. Same symptoms battery light and flickering lights. We changed the Alternator and it fixed the issue.

Sounds like it had a bad battery, bad connection to the battery, bad alternator, bad ECU or some combination. Plus it likely had a bad throw-out bearing or synchro (or both) in the trans. Seeing 18 volts on a battery is not a good thing. That's like melt your battery down voltage regulator has shit the bed levels of excessive voltage. Modern cars don't have a separate voltage regulator though, it's built into the alternator now.

The popping out of 1st gear and grinding means the first gear synchronizer is bad, the previous owner must have liked to come to a stop in first gear/shift into first gear at low speeds a lot. They're brass and get worn down by improper shifting

If the battery is OK take a look at the TIPM under the fuse box. This is a common failure on these Jeeps. If wipers come on whenever they want and car has many electrical funny stuff going on it's the TIPM.

My dad had a 04 Jeep Liberty Renegade he bought new, it's setting now, died sometime last year. He put over 300k miles on it. Always thought they were tough little truckettes His was 3.7 tho I believe And the hatch release is on the key.

Hook up your scanner to check if the alternator is charging. If not then change the battery and see what happens.

we have a 05 liberty KJ with 298,000km on it. the same 3.6L that we first bought at. 200,000km. Running strong but in my opinion its a money pit to take care of. Especially the fuses. They are notorious for fuse problems

The model of jeeps during 2005 and 2008 had that problem!1 when the battery goes bad everything goes crazy!! change the battery to start with

I'm pretty sure it's the alternator. My g/f has a 3.7 l V6 that had the same issue.

Throwout bearing / clutchand a voltage regulator (built into the alternator). Might be syncros in the trans but prob not.

The manual transmission may jump out of gear. Our technicians tell us that replacing the 1-2 synchronizer assembly should correct this concern.

Maybe an alternator or an electrical short. However I wouldn't mess with a transmission problem Maybe talk to Ammco, the transmission might be an easy fix?
