It must be nice to have such high speed driving privileges at your disposal! The Autobahn blast brings back memories. I took European delivery of a BMW 335xi sedan in January 2008. Of course, German law required a drive outside Munich to a tire service center, which was a bit of a challenge for an American with a German language map. There I swapped for winter tires. The tires were rated to a maximum 200 kilometers per hour. Having never driven a car at 125 mph, it was quite a thrill, and you can bet I kept both hands on the wheel. Things fly past you very quickly on a highway at those speeds, so the experience definitely holds your full attention. Thomas's adrenaline and sigh of relief are most understandable!

The R32, still the best sounding exhaust, love that wookie sound. I have a MK7 R from new still. I think the exterior looks better than the MK7.5 refresh models.

Leather seats are much better. They wear better, I you spill on leather it can be wiped off with a damp cloth. Fabric seats soak up everything and easily stain and absorb odors etc. Give me leather every time.

I dont know what people say but i like the exterior looks of the Mark 8 more than the Mark 7 or 7.5. Looks more aggressive. And that led strip in the front is amazing.

Yes indeed good point. The normal Golf R does come with blue but can be bought with the optional black design package, whereas the 20 years model is not available with black package.

Engine covers were removed from all golf 8 models. They were catching fire, so vw did the most simplistic solution.

I've mostly warmed up to the exterior styling since the 8th gen released, R looks better without those honeycomb fog lights, but the mandibles are a bit meh). Still could never live with that interior and cost cutting when a bit more gets you a entry or mid-range S3. Mind you Akrapovič is not an option here in the U.S. but it would make it about even with the entry S3. This is coming from someone who would love the R for it's hatchback practicality (and it is a bit sportier than the S3). The key fob isn't even nice... Maybe the 25 year addition with new front bumper and quality no capacitive bs gloss black excrement will be a bit nicer, might visit VW at the end of that year when they lob a bunch off the price. edit: 20th anniversary in white stands out more, but um blue mirrors on white car don't look good. Funny that the blue paint gets black mirrors but the black and white paint get blue mirrors that don't fit. 🙃

I have 3 problems with the golf R mk8: 1. If I had one, I would always park it frontwards so I'd approach it always from the rear end. I can't stand the front. 2. Power and set up : it's a beast. But so is the price... For a golf. 3rd problem: they discounted the R mk7.5

I'm a VW devotee, current drive 7.5 R. Lost me with the 8 R for 2 reasons. IMO the interior looks cheap and not befitting the top model in the line-up, and...... The dash, infotainment, controls is an utter abomination. Utter #CapacitiveBS in the extreme. Looks, mechanics, great. It'd be an Audi S3 for me instead, no question. Addendum. Great review BTW. Let's see more of your 'friend' in future reviews, always good to hear the ♀️ take on cars. 😁👍
