Six dudes picking the best "family friendly" EV. Never once mentioned boot space and glossing over things that are important for families like practically and space. Here's an idea why not bring your families along to these tests with your weekly shopping, child seats/boosters, strollers, kids scooters, school bags etc and THEN pick the best "family friendly" EV. Your test as it is has limited usefulness for anyone choosing a "family friendly" EV.

Well said: the EX30 is a supermini?!? Even an XC40 isn't that big. The only vaguely family-based is the Tesla, and it would have been the Y more than the 3. This seems more about 'cheapest' than family.

A shame not to see the Citroën e-C4. I just bought one and it’s ace. Absurdly comfortable over potholes and has very polite and discreet lane keep assist. Radar cruise and hands-on auto steer works well on the motorway. And it has proper stalks and buttons and rotary controls for the AC. Over 1000 miles of commute and highway we’ve done 4.0 miles/kWh, which is much better than our old MG5 (and MG customer service was terrible and I’m very happy to leave them behind). I put £500 down and pay £350 a month at 0% for 10kpa/4 years.

6000 miles a year to make the PCP deal look cheaper is a little disingenuous, the average is about 7400 I think and most people buying a family car will drive considerably more. This would also make the insurance look cheaper too. Maybe redo prices with mileage of 10000 miles to be more representative of the PCP deals that families would need.

Have to say I was completely anti ev for the past 3 years , have a few at work and they are terrible, but the wife picked up a born 77kwh with only a few thousand kilometres on it, and I seriously can’t fault it. Most I’ve seen on the read out is 512km on a good day and least 412km. We have a charger at home from a gte golf but after 2 months of ownership we’ve only charge it once of the solar. And most charges are done at her workplace. Just for context 199 euro on pcp and she swapped out of a Gti that was costing 350 a month on fuel. Have to say these cars used correctly , locally and the odd medium long journey are so efficient of the use of terrain and coasting and regen they make perfect sense in a 2 car family. I would urge anyone to trial one for an extended period and actually realise how hard it actually is the run down the battery

This was back in summer 23, so before the whole ZEV mandate. Walk into any showroom now wanting to get a deal and you'll get a mega one, otherwise brands face a £15,000 fine per ever ICE told above the target. I looked a t a lot of these cars and being 6'2" and having a son who is the same height, rear space was very important. The Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Kona EV and Tesla Model 3 were the only ones with enough space for us. I also have difficulty getting in and out of some of the cars, that also made those a no go, such as the MG4. Adding all of the gadgets to meet my outgoing Kia E Niro 4+ including heat pump pushed the prices for the Niro and Kona to almost £45,000. Tesla Model 3 (Highland) at £39,990 won on price, comfort, smoothness and calmness. The screen is used to set up your driving position and mirrors, but once done screen interaction is easy as it easy to see and use for the odd times you need to touch it. I have had no issue with the inicators, in fact they are easy to use and the wheel is turned generally only 90 degrees to access the button. Pressing the button a second time to cancel the signal works flawlessly if it is still activating. it does not suffer the problem of moving the stalk to cancel, that then triggers the opposite side indicators! Lack of buttons makes it safer as I would often have to look within the cabin to locate the button. With the screen you can increase the text size and all the information could be seen in an easy glance, speed and nav in one glance, keeping eyes on the road for a lot more of the time.

Must be a big Musk/Tesla fan to even attempt trying to defend the horrendous design choice of a big tablet and sticking buttons for an indicator on the steering wheel. The only reason Musk implemented these design choices is to cut costs. Nothing to do with safety or ease of use. The lack of quality control shows this up as well. Teslas interior aren't great and often have issues, with no resolution from the after care.

@@Rafiq07 Not a Tesla fan, looked at a lot of other cars and this was best for the price. Trying these things out, I was surprised how easy it made everything and to be honest less distractions. We own a Volvo EX30 and the only frustrating control for us is setting the wing mirrors on the move. Which is actually something you shouldn’t be doing anyway! The car stores profiles linked to your key so the car will set itself up when opening it, move seat, adjust mirrors, other profiles can be added and easily selected via the infotainment system. Climate is easy to control using voice control, you don’t even have to take your eyes off the road. The speed warning is unobtrusive, lane assist is actually quite welcome and the ‘one pedal brake” works well. The ride is comfortable, stays composed over potholes. Push it and it accelerates hard and covers motorways and back roads with ease. Competent in corners and easy to manoeuvre in town. All in all a solid product. As with anything in life, desire and attraction are subjective and can be tainted by unconscious bias, if you’re in the market for an ev take the EX30 for a spin, it is worthy of your consideration.

i get that youre a legacy car magazine but when focusing on EVs theres one thing you absolutely need to include all the time: the base range of an EV is basically irrelevant. because either im not going far and charge at home all the time so its always full, or im going that far (on a roadtrip or what have you) that the base range becomes irrelecant compared to the rechargability. so max charging peak + charging curve. Out of Spec invented the 10% challenge which is: How many miles can you add when arriving at a charging station at 10% SOC in 15 minutes time. THAT is the real data that needs to be included. base range is fine but you drive it empty once and from that point on your base range does nothing for you and its all about rechargability. so how many miles can you add in X amount of minutes when arriving empty or close to empty. this is such a good metric because it also already includes its efficiency. you need to test that in the future and include it in every EV test. EV people care about that so much more than anything you have mentioned in this test. you need to keep up. ;)

So these are supposed to be family cars , so that excludes the Volvo which has back seats only any good for midgets .How can the Astra be better than the Smart ?? also the Jeep . with EVs everything is about efficiency and range and charging speed which means the Stellantis cars just dont cut it . Also dealers , my closest BYD dealer is in central London , yeah im really going to go to central London for a service ,same with SEAT I have no dealers near me . As far as im concerned this test was mostly about how the cars drive instead of what people actually buy cars and especially EVs for . Oh and am I the only one who thinks the interior of the Volvo looks cheap ? that material on the dash and doors looks like Lino .

£35-40k for a family car - how much do you need to earn to pay for this, plus your mortgage and living expenses? This was luxury car pricing a few years ago. The ICE equivalents seem to be significantly cheaper. Then you add in the fact that EVs seem to be heavier than equivalent ICE cars - it's the batteries. In terms of my perception of the vehicle size distribution, there are very few small cars and a high percentage of Medium/Large SUV types. EVs also have a hidden subsidies in that they do not pay Road Fuel Duty on power used, if you charge at home 5% VAT instead of 20% VAT on the electricity and RFL of £10pa from 2025. Then you have the question of battery life - the well made batteries go on for a long time, but if the battery goes, your vehicle is so much scrap metal as there is no cost effective ability to replace the engine as in an ICE vehicle. So these vehicles cause more wear and tear to the roads than the equivalent ICE car and do not pay tax towards maintaining the roads. EVs have their place - primarily for sub 100km trips and in the urban environment, where they are part of the solution for reducing emissions, but far more can be achieved for more people with a cheap rapid public transport system.
