Autodesk Maya 2018 - Forward Kinematics Arm Rigging Set up
This video shows, step by step, instructions on how to create a simple character arm FK rig set up which includes the fingers. Rigging is a crucial step to getting your characters ready to be animated. This video teaches the basics and clear, easy to follow, steps that any 3D enthusiast can follow. Here's a list of useful shortcuts used in maya.
W- move
E- rotate
R- scale
G- repeat last command
q - exit tool
b- soft selection
shift + . - grow selection
alt + b - change background color
f - fit to selection
ctrl + a - open attribute editor/channel box
ctrl + delete - deletes an edge loop( 2014 version and up only)
1 - standard mode
2- subdivision mode with cage
3- subdivision mode
4- wireframe
5 - shaded mode
6- texture mode

Your vids on rigging have been SO helpful. I'm in a game dev course at my local college, currently making something I'll be proud of if I can get it finished on time. I've pushed the boat out hoping that there will be resources I can use to help me along the way, and this is exactly what I was hoping for in terms of character rigging :) Thank you so much!

FINALLY! Rigging for FK arms NOT in T pose. I've tested bake pivot and custom orientation but nothing have worked. Finally a solution. TY!

how do you make it so you have both ik and fk options on the charcter? so you can switch between either option?

Hello, I hope you are still around! thanks for the tutorials. I'm having issues when exporting the character with the rig and controllers as an FBX. Basically when I re import it to Maya the IK handles are gone and the constrains as well. Any Idea on how I could possibly solve this?

To line up the joint with the control wouldn’t it just be easier to parent constrain the Joint to the control with main offset off then duplicate the control then press the down key on the key board and then press delete on the keyboard. Then drag the original CTL into the new duplicate, then just delete the parent constraints.

I really appreciate this tutorial, but is there any way to hide the offset groups in the outliner without hiding the controllers? I hate how it looks in the outliner and I obviously don't want my animator touching those groups. If not I'll have to just lock and hide the attributes on the groups...

So, i've followed your steps. But it seems like using the controllers does nothing? I only see the FK movement effect of the arms, if i actually manipulate one of the groups instead? Does it have something to do with the Skinning?

problem I was facing as of the moment was mirroring all of this. my solution so far was creat a group then duplicate and put the duplicate in the group then -1 on X same on blender.

Is there any way to mirror all the FKs? when I try to it says 'error, 0 joints selected'

What is the point of the groups?

It allows you to freeze transform without messing orientations.

When having a biped character such as this from the tutorial, where should IK and FK go? I've been told that having only IK may result in some errors when animating

It's usually best to have both, look for a tutorial on how to make an IK/FK switch

I would like to know how to do elbow control in Ik. I try to use the pole vector for my elbow character but somehow my character hand became rotate. Did anyone know how to do it?

What is better for rig of hands IK or FK and why?

You mean like fingers? or the whole arm? For the whole arm typically both are set up and can be switched by the animator as they please. For the fingers, FK is the easiest as IK is not really necessary in that case.
