First Off Roading with 37" BFG Tires on Stock Jeep Wrangler JKU Suspension

Here's the video of my first Off Roading in the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the 37" BF Goodrich KM2 tires stuffed under the stock suspension!
If you are curious as to what it took to make the tires fit on the Jeep. I mounted them up on the stock Rubicon rims so that saved a bit of money for now but the backspace on those rims needed to be moved out for a bit more steering clearance so I bought a set of 1.5" G2 wheel spacers and bolted those on first. The front tires then fit up pretty good, only rubbing on the rear of the frame rail at full lock but were extremely close to the stock fender lip. It looked awesome but as I drove around town, they rubbed quite a bit. So, I yanked the front fenders off in anticipation for the Metalcloak Overline Fenders I will be putting on this rig.
To fit the rear tires, things got a little more involved. I had to remove the stock rocker guards (I will trim those and put them back on soon) and make a slight cut to the leading edge of the wheel well. I have seen videos of people just hammering this area in for clearance but cutting it seemed a better option for me. The tires then fit fine but the fenders came off in the process and I just left them off for now since I have the Metalcloak stuff on order. Plus the Jeep looks kind of cool with no fenders. It's not legal in California but I'll enjoy it until the new stuff gets here.
After that, I went ahead and got the gear ratios changed by swapping the ring and pinion to a 4.88:1 kit from G2. Since the axles shafts had to come out to do the gear change, I figured I would just kill the credit card and buy upgraded chromoly axles shafts at this point as well... I'm glad I did. Then I used my Diablo Sport inTune unit and re-calibrated the speedometer and put the 87 octane tune on the PCM. That alone made a noticeable difference in the throttle response and makes the Jeep "feel" sportier to drive.
Then I went out and hit the trails! I headed to an easy trail near me called Drinkwater Trail that winds above the old St. Francis Dam up San Fransisquito canyon. If you get few minutes look up the story about that, it's kind of wild.
Not having the proper bump stops kept me from really hammering on the Jeep and the tires did rub a bit but everything survived pretty great (minimal damage). The performance of the tires on the windy canyon road to the trail was amazing! I absolutely love the way they feel on the road, very confidence inspiring in the twisty stuff and they go great down the highway as well. The KM2's are actually less loud than the stock mud terrains that came on the Jeep.
Off road, these tires and this Jeep are like cheating. This combo makes anyone (even a newb like me) feel like an accomplished off roader. There was so little drama getting up the steep sandy stuff and the fast fire road blasts felt amazing! Now if I can just get the stability management nannies to shut off for that 2wd stuff it would be perfect.
So next up should be fenders and bump stops to make the rig less likely to destroy itself on a big hit and be legal on the road.
Stay tuned and please subscribe to the channel and share these videos to help me keep making more!
Best,
Jason

Seriously HAD to subscribe. Don't know much about you at this point and came across your channel as I was researching a bit into JK Wrangler tires. But had to post and send some kudos your way. I'm sure your camera equipment is top notch but what can't be bought is camera working talent and if indeed you are a one man show, you are up there with the best. Congrats on a jibe well done. This video was a awesome and your shots well composed and beautifully captured.

+autoedit Do the lift. A 2" lift with flat fenders will clear 37" You won't even need to change your drive shaft with a small lift. The adjustable control arms is to put your axles back to where it belongs such as after installing a lift. When the rear wheels flexes, it moves rearward so don't get the control arms until after you get your lift put on.

When I was 18 I worked at Six Flags California and worked that park open to close to buy a then brand new 2000 Ford Ranger Trailhead. +Kaipo Fitisemanu, I wish, being 18 and inexperienced I didn't fight the insurance company hard enough to fix my truck. they said it was a total loss and couldn't but a year after the accident I found it for sale in Mississippi fully repaired and for sale for almost what I paid for it. at the time my friend was only just turned 18 and didn't have the means to replace it. I didn't get a new truck till picked up my current F150 Crew 4x4...which I later found out is a Hurricane Katrina salvage but 6years and not one problem.

Off-Road Rule #1: Never go wheeling without a buddy. Particularly when you're testing a new config that is already telegraphing problems with tire clearance, and your gut reaction is telling you to back out before the second hill. A spotter could have given you valuable feedback all the way through that first run...

Hi Jason, I just thought I would share a bit of info I found on disabling traction control:1. Check that the automatic transmission selector is in the “Park” position, and that a manual transmission is in neutral gear.2. Shift the transfer case into the 4H range position and ensure parking brake is firmly set.3. Turn the steering wheel until it is centered and the wheels are pointed straight ahead.4. Turn ignition on (and optionally start engine to make turning the wheel easier - will work with or without engine running) and wait approximately five (5) seconds for the system bulb check to complete.5. Turn the steering wheel one-half turn to the right (clockwise). 6. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds exactly then release and wait for chime.7. Turn the steering wheel back to centre, then continue turning the steering wheel one-half turn to the left (counter clockwise).8. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds exactly, release and wait for chime.9. Turn the steering wheel back to centre.10. Press and hold the “ESP OFF” button for 7 seconds, release and wait for chime. 11. Cycle the ignition switch to the “OFF” position. Repeat for re-engaging. Hope that helps!

Hey Jason, looks like an interesting area to explore. I'm nearby (Bakersfield) and have a similar setup (I really like the stock Rubicon wheels). I have the two door version with Teraflex leveling kit (1-1/2") and 1-1/4" spacers. Then I put the Toyo AT2 in 285-75-17 which gives me about a 34 inch tire (but a little narrower). I wound up putting adjustable lower control arms so I could adjust the caster (was a little too squirrely for me otherwise). It looks good on my Jeep and rides close to stock.

this is an old video... but it's wild to think spacers can be the suitable solution for running 37's. spacers help in articulation. trails test your suspension. the travel you've given your stock suspension with those bump stops, springs, and shocks is unreal after doing those tires... i mean if you think the spacers were a good solution then why did you only choose 1.5 instead of the biggest spacer you could've given?
@AutoEdits

Because that doesn't make any sense. I put the smallest spacer to accomplish the task of getting some clearance.

@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 8 жыл бұрын
+Pascal Brandt-Gagnon Thanks Pascal! I heard the same about the 35's and was going to go that route but my work truck has 37" tires (so I really go used to the look and feel) and it all came down to what I "wanted" the most rather than "needed". The 37's are harder to fit, are harder on the suspension and axles but, this may be the only Jeep I get to build so I wanted to try and stick with the parts I was the most passionate about. So long answer longer...I just loved the look of the larger tires. And I did get a spare, thanks!

When I saw the title of this vid, my immediate thoughts were, 'that seems ill advised'. And the opinion stands. Currently my Jeep is at an exact opposite stage. 3" lift (Teraflex S/T) and spacers, but stock tires and wheels. Likely to replace - when ready aka when worn/necessary. (Not too far off) But likely not go past 33 or 315's as the daily driver is often the wife, and often child passanger. It's a compromise, short of addition pitfalls. Better clearance and flex. Less sag under load for camping gear etc. Minimal detrimental effect on drivability on the road in breaking and steering, sans a necessary break upgrade, steering stabiliser upgrade. Not to mention cost of operation in tire and gas money. But that's me... 'Overlander' type, not 'crawler'. You seem to be starting at the pitfalls of a Crawler, and long term have a range of corrections ahead. All to buy ~3" of clearance in height and some rolling resistance reduction. The trail you did, you easily could have done stock. No lift or tires - no metal work or rubbing. Not sure where you're heading with the future of this build, or the trails its intended for, but seems very backwards. And with some elements of danger. Is this going to be a trailer toted toy? If not, head right to breaks and steering stabiliser, otherwise some springs and arms. As I think the money is best spent there first - before 37s.

For everyone asking about his exhaust I can't say for sure whether he has an aftermarket but I can say it sounds extremely similar if not identical to mine, all I have done is remove the rear resonator and straight piped it more or less out the back end from the exhaust. You honestly don't even have to extend the pipe all the way out but if you don't want your fumes coming out under the body you should. Plus I wanted mine to be even a little louder so I turned the the pipe down and the sound slaps off the road and sounds amazing, if anyone wants pictures or more info message me! I can even take rev videos and send them if you are having trouble deciding. Mine is a 2013 JKU Rubicon 10A. Thanks!

Im a wrangler noob only just got my JK last week , before I saw your video I to was wondering how 37's would fit on stock suspension with 17' factory rims , well I guess I just found out , So know Im thinking how would 33's fit with the 1 1/2' spacers ? . and eventually a 2 1/2' lift . Great video's mate ppl like me learn alot from ppl like you .

Mar vel, I have 33s on a 2.5 inch puck lift and I have more than enough room for 37s useing wheel spacers. just take your time and learn as you go. don't feel the pressure to rush into too Mich too quick and destroy your jeep. good luck and have fun with it!!
@damn3putts
@damn3putts 7 жыл бұрын
If you're planing on doing a 2.5" lift then I would wait on getting the 33s and go with 35s. I went with 33s with the Teraflex levelling kit and the clearance is good, 2.5" lift may look a little odd with 33s.

How did you get the tires to for on the rim? It says the rim with is 8.5-11. Please help me I have stock tenth anniversary tims and want to run 37" tires. I have a 4" lift and 1.5" spacers. Plus bushwhacker fenders so I have the clearance. I just want to save money on the rims. Please advise on the specific sizes for everything.
