I commute around 800km a week. I agree whole-heartedly about the isolation bubble of the car. It's a great chance to wind down and focus solely on the task at hand (driving). I ride motorbikes for this exact same reason.

I did the same at American Honda. Classroom and riding. It made me a better driver, better rider, better pilot, better business person. All the factors that go into a crash, most of them are controllable. Exiting an off ramp into a decreasing radius turn, right of way violations. Why they don't require drivers to take such a course is incredible.

I am a software engineer... and I hate that our cars become as unreliable as software these days where shit is rushed out and breaks for the user requiring software updates. I like that the car stays the same spec working correctly out of the factory(like it used to for most models until recent years) and stay that feature level forever. I do not want shit to be added and I do not want it to be taken away: looking at you heated seats subscriptions and other hot garbage.... there is a personal and public safety aspect of a car that should not be taken as lightly as it has been in recent years... your car working differently from one day to another suddenly can cause accidents. The surprise alone is enough to distract too much... It is like the physical buttons. They serve a safety purpose. Consistent operation and the ability to expect consistent operation is a similar safety aspect. I am not for the OTA updates for cars in general. And the more sad issue of course will turn out to be that most of the OTA interaction with our cars will be just a ploy to collect data you may or may not have consented to being collected about you whether you like it or not.

The reason we accept Google's use of our data is that they give us a lot of free stuff in return - such as free streaming and free software. But with a car company I've given them a large wad of hard-earned cash - so I'm buggered if I'm going to let them bombard me with ads unless there's a big discount involved.

I have a 2021 Volvo XC 60 and am angry that Volvo keeps pressing me to pay them $1000.00 to “update” my vehicle’s program to make it accelerate better handle better and as they say perform to it’s optimal level. Also this package is totally safe for the engine and transmission and all components involved. Warranty is not affected by this performance upgrade. This vehicle is expensive enough. I’m mad that it didn’t come running it’s best. I really feel cheated by Volvo.

"who owns the data" used to be a question. I'm not so sure any more. There was a saying "If you're not paying for the product, *you* are the product." Then when selling personal data was more common, corporations started assuming they own you, even when you *are* paying for the product. And if corporate databases exist, they will eventually leak, even if the corporate policy is good old "We won't sell or share your data". Social engineering, bent employees and weak security can all be the way it happens, but it will happen.

Driving long distance particularly puts me in my happy place. Whilst I think EVs are great for us city dwellers, the thought of driving an Ipad is not appealing.

A fella on another KZbin channel took his Porsche Taycan to the dealer for a software update. Upon collection he noted that the "comfort access" feature where the door handles pop out as you approach - didn't work any more. It turns out that Porsche removed this option during the update as the car shouldn't have had that feature and it was "included" in error. They (Porsche) demanded £1100 to reinstate it!

OTA updates are treated as safety defects under some international safety regulations, because an OTA update can affect steering, brakes and motor performance and this has to be regulated and approved in each country. It can’t be a black box, or insurance claims can’t proceed ie the car is “defective” if it doesn’t have the proper updates or mandatory service(s). Hundreds of people would need to dig into Porsche taycan OTA updates. ie all of the Porsche Technicians and dealers globally that get this information for mandatory safety obligations.

My phone was lying on the coffee table, switched on, screen locked, and with no apps running... My mates and I discussed generators, and strangely enough later I got bombarded on KZbin and Firefox with ads for generators!? Same thing happened with inverters. It actually helped me find the right inverter etc for me. I have an almost obsolete Samsung Android 5.1.1 Kitkat, or some other sweets. Does Google listen in? Maybe even watch through the camera? God's eye stuff 😨 I'm switching my phone off in future when my girl starts with...😅☺

Thanks for discussing the mirror overlap. Unfortunately, some car mirrors won't move outward far enough in my experience. I've done the mirror overlap for years. The only time it's handy to see the sides of your vehicle is when you're trying to park between the lines and straight.

Is there an off switch? What happens when you turn it off? Can you still drive the car? Who actually wanted this, apart from State and Federal authorities? Sounds like a great reason to keep the car I have, and avoid this "ankle monitor tracker" in the form of a new car. Looks like used cars will become increasingly more valuable, prepare for the six figure price on a working Kingswood or XW Falcon, if we aren't there already.

DPF - the plague upon diesel engines. I've just spent £1500 on getting my turbo reconditioned, the ancillaries cleaned out and the DPF deleted and the specialist company that did all this work told me that they ONLY see DPF-era diesels; non-DPF engines just don't suffer the trouble. In my case, the turbo (with 100k miles under its belt - still a baby in diesel terms) had been letting a bit of oil into the exhaust and the DPF internals had collapsed. The EGR had probably failed - this normally doesn't cause a huge problem, but contributed to the DPF calamity. The DPF wouldn't regenerate, the engine continually went into limp-mode and I just couldn't trust the car on any journey of more than local mileage (although it does get a lot of good runs - just with limp-mode in full effect). This specialist business told me that deleting the DPF is the panacea. When I queried the emissions angle, I was told that the catalyst does virtually all of the business, so who am I to argue? I might also mention that there might be some blame attached to a fundamentally crap PSA-group engine, as I previously ran a Renault diesel for nearly twice this mileage without a single mechanical problem (just a bit of electronic stuff and the most pathetic handbrake mechanism ever developed). Lesson learned - never tolerate a DPF and avoid PSA engines in future.

Not just DPF diesels, Toyota's 3.0D4D KDJ150 engines are hand grenades with the pin pulled at the factory. Ours cracked 2 pistons at 168k KMs, and there have been hundreds of others experience the same thing. If it's got wheels or tits it will cause you grief and cost you money

The thing about the car industry being excited about subscription based hardware comes from videogames, I'd say. Subscriptions on their own are nothing unique, but the videogame industry has standardized the model of giving you the full content download, having it on your system, but then dividing the product into a dozen tiers. You either buy the base shell of a game (which used to contain everything) or you fork out additional tens of dollars for all the other content, which is finished and on your hard drive at launch anyway, but behind a paywall. And since the average age of the consumer is about the same, but every year the newer generations know less and less about the reality before all this paywall subscription nonsense, that particular industry is flourishing. So I'd argue, in a way the carmakers are essentially copying videogames, which truly sounds strange.

My first computer was a brand new Atari 800, and I've been a home and business PC computer user all the way up till today. The certainty of mass numbers of ( insert brand name here ) vehicles getting blue screens of death at highway speed will not surprise me in the slightest by a software update gone bad. ‘Revenue Streams’ sounds a lot like the subscriptions that Tesla sell where they software block the car’s features. Finding the lump sum for a car can be a lot easier than adding finance repayments plus another subscription to your monthly budget.

A lot of computer hardware works just like that: The hw features are baked in the product regardless of which version you buy, and they are just enabled or disabled by firmware at the assembly line. The manufacturers do this because the cost would be greater if they started producing too many variants, and quality controlling each, and maintaining stock etc. Instead, the same product can be tailored to multiple price points on the fly at the moment of final assembly or even post production. Some years ago it was even a thing to try and unlock guaranteed off processor cores in cheaper Intel CPUs… or to enable newer WiFi standards, etc.

Land Rover offered something similar with over the air connectivity in 2014 when I bought one of their cars. I refused as you had to sign that they owned the data from your car. I buy a car, I own that car and any data it has. There’s no way I will accept a third party sending me anything to my car or accessing any of my car data without my express consent (fault diagnosis). Looks like I will be staying away from any new car.

As far as chimes in cars go, I hate the things, nothing worse than a 4wd farm vehicle zinging and pinging because you had the nerve to not wear a seat belt on private land. Even worse when youre on tracks and need to open/close cattle gates with the it running. On the topic of third parties having access to data, Tesla and Apple both have these agreements and both have alot of influence in the auto world with Car Play looking to take over alot of dashes. Sure a Korean company might be bad but many of the companies you mentioned we should be worried about are US based. Also Tesla CEO owning Twitter so expect some cross over and social scoring from this App X...

I have worked in large nursing homes and hospitals where they use “robots” to deliver food and laundry to programmed drop point on separate floors. They (robots) summon and lockout all elevators (thru have access to) to perform their deliveries to floors, wards, dining rooms etc. They have 360 degree infrared sensors constantly monitoring their surroundings. When they sense people they have a prerecorded message they broadcast. Similar to the Lost in Space robot😂. It seemed to work well, although I would say it somewhat of a predictable environment compared to the dills we share the road network with.

Insurance prevents this. OTA can change the car’s integral performance and identity when there’s software locks and limitations on performance. So, in many countries, OTA performance updates aren’t allowed to modify the core statistics of the registered safety data of the vehicle, sic. If you swap the battery and the car becomes heavier, that’s not the same insured coverage anymore. If you buy autopilot, insurance has to be specific to the actuarial/safety data of that particular SKU/Model. That also means that if everyone buying the Performance Dual Motor crashes their car in the first year, your insurance price goes up if they make Performance an upgrade. Or a Downgrade option to skive the difference in insurance premiums and coverage. If the car changes due to wear or user performance/road rash, hitting the neighbours cat, whatever. But if a software update changes the brake performance and raises the top speed from 190km/h to 240km/h, sic. Because you glued and added a plastic spoiler to the boot lid.

My big issue with all of the subscription based hardware models is much aligned with yours but I would also include performance. if all of the hardware is included in the car build then, to me, that will surely add to the vehicles weight and reduce potential range as a result. For me I would rather not have the extra hardware I dont want, in favour of better range especially with an EV!!! and I do not want subscription based anything in my car. As it is, every industry is trying to royaly screw us a bit at a time on a monthly basis I dont want that in my car as well. Besides there are already for too many people out on the road who cant even get the basics of driving right, how the hell will they be able to get to grips with all of this in car technology?

I think the clearest objection i have to "over the air" vehicle updates is that the owner is not in control of update or not. As an automotive technician, i firmly beleive that unless you have a real issue, do not update. New patches constantly break stuff that wasnt broken. Also it is a guarantee that the software folks in the matrix will not sympathize with your 8 year old hardware and load it with bloatware until you scrap that car for a shiny new $60k infotainment screen.

And when you do your computer in now in the thrall of Apple co. We buy the machine and software and THEY dictate how you will use it. If you try to NOT install the latest your computer strangely starts to slow down and misbehave. Continuously updating software in my car? No thank you. Hey John! I have a question about warming up the engine before longer trips in a PHEV. I own a Crosstrek PHEV and it only kicks in the 4 banger once I get above 65 mph or I force it to engine only in charge mode. You can also kick the engine in by getting on the gas pedal at take off, but this is not going to keep the engine engaged enough to circulate the oil. I have been putting it in save mode while still driving in the city, where I would normally use EV mode only, in order to light up the engine and run it at low rpm's before hitting the highway. I assume that this is enough as modern engines are quite efficient at starting up and just working as intended. When I tried to find an answer online, I kept seeing that Hybrid engines are made to endure this. This answer stinks of marketing or social media beard stroker lingo for "we don't really know and are just going to say whatever." I just wanted to hear your thoughts on PHEV's and what to do before kicking the engine in at highway speeds, which I liken to being awakened by someone clanging a metal plate above my head and singing baby shark out of tune at the top of their lungs.

There are a couple of comments that I can make, when are marketers going to realize that there is a point at which I have seen the advert so many times that I will be less likely to buy the product even if I might have wanted it originally, to see it too many times just pisses you of, it must get to the point of counter productive, also the ability to turn things of could be something that the boys in blue would gladly use to prevent fleeing drivers, very quickly preventing the dangerous to the public high speed chases and also for prevention of theft.

Interesting concept this autonomy, driving the Stinger the other day, dual carriage way, vehicle parked in the center reservation area waiting to make the leap of faith onto the side road, dashboard goes "ping" message comes up to "check your vehicle surroundings" or something like that, I didn't look to long because I was hoping that the Ranger crossing in front of me didn't slow down because there was no way I was going to stop if he did. As you say how does a computer work that out? When I got the message if the Ranger slowed down I was going to hit it, if the message could have come earlier great however the sensors didn't pick the Ranger up until it was in my path.................. it would have been all over red rover. Currently, in New South Wales at least, if there has been a fatal or near fatal accident, the police just take the car or any cars they are interested in from that scene. From there they can download information from your abs module that tells them how you were driving in the lead up to the accident. I get to talk to crash investigators fairly often, and it is amazing what they can glean from a modern car.

Depends on how insurance companies want the whole operation to run, they lobby all of our governments to get the rules written their way.

IBloody Hell John. What do I do? Im currently driving my 2nd Ford Kuga ST line 2.00 all-wheel drive which has been par-excellence but at 30,00 miles want to replace it soon. But with what? We have 2 dogs and sometime holiday here in the uk so need the space. The facelift and rehash of the Kuga is a ridiculous step backwards and its little wonder Ford are in trouble? Our budget is a max of £25000 for a good used car. NOTHING remotely electrically in any way.

Great to see some competition for Tesla, although seeing the software challenges within VW, I don't see it being as easy as they believe. Somewhat gaining appreciation for where Tesla are at today, hearing the Big Auto's hope to have similar capabilities in years to where Tesla is today. Scary thing is that if you can park Elon's over optimistic timeframes, Tesla seems to be ultimately delivering what was promised, just years late. Seriously how late were GM and Ford behind their deadlines and never makes the news.

They are not delivering on automatic driving - their system is well behind the other leading contenders. And it was Musk himself who said that without full self-driving they were just another car company. At the same time that Musk was claiming it was working "right now" his engineers were testifying under oath to regulators that full self-driving wasn't even on the distant horizon. They can't even run automated Teslas through a tunnel of their own design - a 100% controlled environment.

Elon opened all of Tesla's patents to "the competition" to encourage competition. He wants help on Tesla's mission to electrify transport. Great news from Hyundai who have been punching above their weight as a legacy auto manufacturer already on the EV front. I'm sure Elon will be delighted with this news.

Sharing the patented IP was what they did with Hyperloop, not their EVs. And today they're not even involved with Hyperloop, which tells you what a good idea that was.

In the 60's and 70s you could option you car exactly how you wanted it , engine gearbox diff ratio limited slip diff sound system colour tyres wheels trim colour stripes and so on.But you can't do that now,they're flat out even building them in a reasonable time frame. Now they want to incorporate this software system when you only something like Android auto, the rest would be superfluous any normal driver.

Here's a question .. What is brand, model and specs of the laptop you are using ... You got me thinking on the resale .. Would they do a complete data wipe of the vehicle on changing owners, and can you be sure your data is wiped and not kept ? 🤔

They *should* wipe data and reset, but they will often screw it up. More likely to me is that, if there is any kind of data connection, ever, then personal data will be copied to manufacturer/importer/dealer records, and those collections of data tend to leak out, even if they aren't sold.

@Retired Bore So your car gets to scan your phone, and likewise your phone gets to scan your car for personal data ;-) OK that was half-joking, but just yesterday a guy (computer programmer by trade) had his evening messed up a bit when he got out of the car to look for clues (satnav address was wrong, I think). Android Auto in his Skoda wouldn't play and the 'droid end wouldn't let go either, so he couldn't just run maps on the phone. If software can foul things up, it will eventually.

Are you saying that it was AA in the car preventing use of Google Maps on the phone, because of the link? I wasn't sure whether it was that, or the AA software on the phone refusing to let go of a dead link. Whatever it was, the delay rebooting everything was just enough to mess up his evening a bit. I guess my point is that software is compromised by budgets and management decisions as well as by the programmers. (This guy also gives talks on what breaks, and he gets asked back, suggesting he's not daft. Just human). I'm saying that decent testing is hard. Unexciting, but hard. And budget tomfoolery means that developers are *ordered* not to spend time testing it thoroughly. We are all beta testers, these days.

Some entertainment UI’s have a factory reset that wipes any stored data or customer/location cache. So if you bring the car from VIC to QLD or vice versa, the maps should not be defaulting to time zones or dealer locations in the maps. Tesla, do not have this at all, the car is simply not owned by the driver, and while driver/passenger/guest profiles can be reset or deleted, but the core history of the car is retained because it reports everything via WiFi or 4G. This prevents theft, and tinkering or custom alterations ie replacing the ID/ VIN of the car if it’s stolen or sent off to UAE by “accident”, sic. If you think that’s a significant problem, ie you’re renting the car instead of owning it, welcome to 2010.

Or unlocked as a trial period, then locked for limited kms, as a teaser then locked & you have too pay, to have every single extra unlocked. I found this on another channel. Oh, & if you sell the bike, the extras you have played for , gone so the new owner has to pay again for the new owner. John the question I want to ask is, can this have a knock on affect for cars?

Forget hacking issues, the nature of current software management “Agile” means that if an issue with the software is noticed, like say the steering wheel does not turn left when the véhicule encounters an obstacle, the “issue” is discussed in the next ceremony, voted on in the next stand up and if there is time free, treated in the next sprint. That will kill a few customers. Plus freedom to choose with your wallet, is that really freedom?

Many good points. Please expand on the concept of 'over-the-air-updates'. Just how is the update delivered? Does the car have its own Internet connection? Is is snooping on my driving habbits and interested if I am visiting a different brands sales room? i.e. is there any regulation or is it simply 'unlegislated' (like Clubs NSW using facial recognition tech to recognise problem gamblers).

I suspect we'll have lots of little reliability and security issues related to poorly developed software platforms car manufacturers inflict on us.

The comments about software as a service means you buy the maps, driver assist, door unlocking and so on as a month to month payment to the car maker... Don't make the payment? You can't get into your own car. Throw in the data collection, and you have a huge problem. The Electric Semis will require megawatt charging rates to get a quick charge. How does that happen miles from electric service? How does that impact your grid??? And of course, you get to pay for the DATA.... LTE 4-5?? Tesla already announced that the data connection will cost you.. so that is yet another fee to make things warm and fuzzy.

In Europe, (Germany) EVs are part of a larger official strategy to reduce the amount of private car ownership overall to reduce emissions, both CO2 and particulate matter pollution in cities. That might be what has been missed by Hyundai, because there are indeed laws in effect, to force people out of cars of any kind. So Hyundai picked it up alright, but it is not a PC whim or trend, it is intentional.

You cant blame the programmer, as the programmer is part of the corporation, and the work the programmer does is technically the work of the corporation. The corporation is a "person" in the eyes of the law, so if the corporation supplies 100% self driving cars/service, then technically the Corporation is liable for accidents with that product. THIS is the real issue, this is why the laws need to be polished to make 100% clear on who is responsible. (Which I believe is still the corporation supplying the product/service. Keep up the great work John :)

"Blind spots don't exist" *should* be true. And I agree about adjusting mirrors properly. A lot of drivers set them badly out of habit, with half the mirror showing the car's paint, instead of what's behind. They seem to like it that way. Some cars just make it difficult to avoid blind spots. And trucks and buses have an even bigger problem.
