I vividly remember some of them getting up near 600,000km with zero issues. This was on highways, dirt roads, rough tracks, mud and pouring rain and terrible barely passable tracks beside the railway corridor. The interior plastics were a bit tired but mechanically they were just fine, and we used to joke that this was done in the hands of railway crews, and if normal humans drove them you could expect double that kilometres out of them. 😂 I seriously doubt this new one would come anywhere near that.

The regular battery in the engine bay was replaced with a new one by RACQ and the whole car sprung to life. Get this though, the RACQ dude said that if you are on the open road at 2:00 AM for example and the regular battery fails, then you are sweet UNTIL the engine switches to the hybrid battery (it does this all the time) and then everything will go dead instantly and stay that way until the regular failed battery is replaced.

I'm not sure if I explained this clearly, but in my 4WD, the strut has a U at the bottom end. Bolt goes through the end of U, then LCA, then again through the other side of the U. If it would become lose, you'd hear the knocking. If it falls out (unlikely), the strut would rest on the LCA.

A couple of things to point out about the old vs new Prado. The new one is 200kg heavier, more spacious and gets the same economy. Also, the boot space in the gx, vx and Kakadu is only bad if you are utilising the 3rd row. Otherwise it’s not so bad, the back box is removable and if you really want you can take out the seats and put in a false floor.(check warranty) The gxl and altitude don’t have the 3rd row seats and the box is much smaller (100mm vs 250mm) so the boot space for the versions that are for 4x4 is pretty good.

Wet and rainy UK here and on a 2 hour motorway drive Sunday morning I passed, not 1, not 2 but three new shape defenders on the hard shoulder with their hazards on assuming they were waiting for recovery. (as its illegal just to stop on the hard shoulder in the UK unless you break down) they are getting a hateful reputation over here

Hybrid = No thanks. Most Toyota truck customers who would typically buy it are not into overcomplicated disposable cars / trucks with zero resale value when the main battery inevitably sh*ts the bed. Engineers and designers at Toyota must've gone insane.
@pantoqwerty2 күн бұрын
I am left wondering how much of this was poor engineering vs poor engineering to align with or meet mandated emissions regulations whether directly for that model or the overall fleet. It literally saves no fuel, adds complexity, increases costs, and is an overall “what the fuck?”. Could have had a lot of feedback from customers wanting a hybrid mall crawler I suppose but presumably they’d also be expecting to save fuel.
@typhoon-72 күн бұрын
Here in the UK the only option we have is the 2.8 diesel without any hybrid. And I think it's better for it. Although it's still too expensive.

I've been a Toyota fan boy for about 12 years and I ordered a Lexus GX 550 with an 8 month waiting period. This presented a window of opportunity to observe these arising fundamental flaws in quality control and their blatant disregard for customer intelligence. After the DPF issues and the way Toyota had to be dragged to court to admit there was a problem as well as these new Prado 250 issues and their responses once again, I just cancelled my Lexus order even though I lost my deposit it's better than ending up with another shitbox. It seems it's a race to the bottom with car manufacturers these days.

Meantime, a Series II LandRover from approximately 60 years ago, or even a Land Cruiser 50 years ago, providing you put rubber boots on the plug leads, seems to happily continue on through all kinds of water crossings, at any reasonable speed. That said, you can't cruise them at 100 kmph, that wasn't invented 60 years ago. But, if it faded to black, and it never did, in the local Mall, carpark it is very likely it could be quickly encouraged back to life with simple tools like pliers, screwdrivers and maybe a spanner or two. No software required. Wow, haven't traveled far in 60 years? Or, - not so much.

Not to mention, where mud (ie slippery bottoms) is involved then "walking pace" is a pretty sure way of getting stuck permanently. Every obstacle is dealt with on a "drive it as you find it" basis. As an owner of a previous 1984 Hilux 4x4 that went everywhere I asked it to (including rivers up Cape York and all the sand islands) there's a reason I looked at the 2022 Hilux and said "yeah no, I'm good doooode".

Hi John, love your work. 2.8 litre diesel claiming 7l/100 ks is a flat out lie. My Hilux on a trip to Qld from Melbourne and back on cruise control, averaged 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres. My big problem with this car is its kerb weight v its GVM. Add the weight of two adults at maybe 150 kg, the tow hitch and the ball weight of a 3.5 t van or even a 3 t van and there are some serious questions to be answered if anything else goes in there. Take out the weight of the 48v system and I bet that was the original target design. I think that the hybrid was a bolt-on afterthought.

The mitsubishi L300 vans had an air intake pipe that ran between the drivers tyre and back towards the engine with a channel on the top that conveniently directed the water off the inner wheel arch into the air intake seizing the motor after driving through a large puddle. Apparently they knew about this but somehow couldn't be bothered fitting a cheap piece of rubber to stop this happening.

The first review I watched of this "all new" Prado was by Harry Metcalfe (wealthy bloke, loves cars, farmer, all that) and the one thought that stuck with me was: why oh why did Toyo put that sodding miserable 2.8D in it? I mean, it'll do the job in a Hilux ute but in a heavy all-weather all-purpose SUV it's way out of its league (see also the new 79-series). As far as I can tell, all the "mild hybrid" bollocks add is complexity and weight. I don't mind the looks myself, but what the F have Toyo done to the Prado?
