My son was a service advisor for a dealer of these and a former British, now Chinese, brand. The yard was full of broken cars. Had angry people yelling at him, crying and all emotions in between. Most cars had been financed and could not be driven. The cars had engine and gearbox casting cracking or making noises, brake rotor warping after 60km. The touch screen went dead, wiring looms needed replacing. Imagine waiting for a touch screen where you could not adjust the radio, change the climate control etc. The crate engines were 3 to 4 months wait wiring looms were worse. The warranty was often denied initially for gear box, clutch and motor because dealer/manufacturer policy. (Not driving car properly!) One morning he phoned in, saying he had had enough and wasn't coming in again.

Having family and friends in China with senior jobs, consultancies et al and with degrees and postgraduate qualifications, I am in a very good position to understand the REAL quality of Chinese cars as opposed to the PURPORTED quality. Chinese cost cutting includes brake rotors 70% of the thickness of say Japanese brands; thinner coats of paint than say Toyota, Kia et al, lack of preparation to avoid premature rusting; smaller underbody welds; panel fit etc etc etc. So go ahead and say my Chinese car is as good as any Japanese, Korean, German car et al and cost a lot less but please be aware that you are having a very big lend of yourself!
@satokage93545 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insights! I test drove some Wuling, MG, Neta, BYD & Chery EV models & came away impressed what many of these new Chinese car companies were able to achieve in a decade or so, but ,they were still not yet at the level of Japanese, or even Korean, carmakers (generally speaking); in some cases, Korean quality is already at par or exceed the Japanese makes (unlike when they 1st came to market in the 80's). I also read about & watched videos on some odd break-downs in the media (on a few models, like rear axle breaking on a Chery model in Malaysia due partially to rust, which led to replacement recalls), & your examples really helped explain the probably root causes!

FYI, many car manufacturers (including some legacy ones) produce some of their models from China & export them worldwide. You should also know that Japanese & South Korean carmakers, similar to Chinese carmakers in the beginning, introduced "subpar" products during their early years but steadily improved & it can be expected Chinese carmakers will follow the same trajectory, especially as some European legacy automakers are already partially or wholly owned by some Chinese automaker(s).

A major reason EVs even exist is because they represent a new business model. The more efficient they get the more the price of energy will be raised to guarantee profits. The big money is gonna game the shit out of the "energy transformation". Putting it simply, profits will be maintained by fees, taxes, and increasing the cost of ever smaller amounts of energy. It will only be a few years until having a car follows the "software as a service" (SSAS) model and a subscription to drive your computer with wheels is required so that profits can be locked in. No corporation cares about the air you breathe.

There is no mention of the Dealer, who obviously ducked for cover, referring the claim back to BYD. I am sure this is not an isolated case of car companies throwing customers under the bus. if you are serious about buying a new car, the service and reliability aspect has to be a major consideration. While many CHINESE models seem to attract buyers due to their very competitive price and wealth of gizmos, the risk you take with vehicles which are recently introduced to the market is cause for reflection in view of the spineless ACCC. Chinese vehicles are immensely popular for those seeking what appears to be a bargain vehicle but you have to wonder how many corners were cut to achieve such prices. In the next few years the resale value and possible reliability issues will become worrying.
@MrChaza0015 ай бұрын
The Chinese are extremely good at finding ways to cut corners, make things out of fake materials ( tofu dreg materials) and to totally lie about their products. Also, every Chinese EV manufacturer is majorly supported by the Chinese government. Some companies are losing tens of thousands of dollars on each car sold. Just let that sink in for a minute and then ask yourself why would the government support them so much and why are they dumping thousands of EV cars in Europe and around the world. Hint: it’s not because they’re nice people and have your benefit at heart. STOP buying Made in China!

We did have a charge controller that wouldnt allow full rate charging. After determining it didnt present a safety issue, BYD ordered a replacement controller. When it arrived it was replaced under warranty. They kept the car three days just to make sure all was OK (it was the first one they had replaced). We were given a replacement vehicle while ours was away. Three months on it runs like clockwork. No problem at all. Personally I have had much worse service from Honda who only offered a clapped out Toyota Yaris for the three months it took to get a replacement Civic hybrid gearbox from Tokyo.

Slightly off this topic but imagine living in a block of flats in which one of your neighbors parks their EV in the car park underneath. So even if you do not own an EV yourself, you are in constant danger of being caught at home if their EV decides to instantly self immolate for fun and giggles. Who is going to pay for damages? And who would be held culpable for any loss of life that might have taken place?

Canberra is cold in winter by Australian standards but it's way warmer than North America and Europe. They seem to manage mostly okay with their EVs. They occasionally have winter storms that cause problems for most cars. I live in Canberra so I know what it's like. It was 15 deg C today, which isn't that cold. The BYD's are distributed by an Australian company called EVDirect. No idea what warranty is like in other countries where you buy direct from BYD but here you are dealing with a small importer not BYD itself. My sisters ATTO3 had an issue with the 12volt battery which stopped the car working (18 months old) and she had to source a new one herself. Apparently, it's a very common problem. She is an EV evangelist and keeps nagging me to buy an EV but the more I look at it the more convinced I am that it's not a good choice.
