Thank you so much. Came across this video trying to find a way to put in my dashcam without having the wire hang down for the 12V and the fuses were too small for hardwiring (plus a tad complex for me). This was so easy to do, but I'd have had no idea it was even a thing if I'd not seen this. I bought an OBD2 extender to shut the power off all together since I don't need it on while in the garage, but it looks so professional I can't even tell I'm the one that did it. Dash cams should be installed in the dead center of the windshield just behind the mirror or slightly lower than the rearview mirror. This position gives the camera the best view through the front windshield for better angles if an accident happens. If you have it in the lower left hand corner it will have huge blind spots on the right hand side just right of the outer fender area. Please everyone do your research and install your dash cam in the center of the windshield and also make sure you double check for glare. Also i would always recommend getting a dash cam that has a rear facing camera so that you can catch everything thats happening throughout the vehicle and behind you and even you and your passengers. My rear facing camera has saved me tremendously. As for hard wiring most Dash Cams have a hard wire kit available online.
@AlexAutoFun
@AlexAutoFun 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Reseller Rockafeller! My Garmin so far has recorded really good video from that angle, it may be due to its wide angle lens, but using the same method the wire could be run higher up the A pillar while tucking into the trim, this should position the camera higher for better coverage. I have to agree with the dual camera recommendation, it definitely helps having a second angle to capture a full picture of what led to crash. Thanks for watching and commenting bud!

I think he means rear facing camera as in… mounted on the rear windshield, to catch scenarios where one gets rear ended. The rear facing camera you’re describing (recording interior of one’s own car and passengers) is also a valid scenario, but is typically only used by Uber drivers. Or if one has a high end car that is in parked by valets (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”).

Thanks for this. I wanted to mention that many cars have a dome light or map lights just above the rear-view mirror. The power lead(s) for those lights can be accessed with a minimum of effort by removing the light unit and connecting a new feed into the light feed, then run a new lead out to the camera, usually through the gap where the headliner seems to meet the windshield but usually doesn't. This saves all the work (and a lot of wire) in running a power feed and ground all the way up the A-Pillar and across to the camera mounting area. The next closest power access is at sun visors that have a lighted mirror. That's a nice car you have there! Beautiful dashboard and interior. I see it's a stick too! Nice.

Good video. I had the OBD with an on and off switch. Worked a d seemed to minimize battery drain on a seldom driven car. Here is another option: I attached a USB power pack battery to my sun visor, and connected cam to the visor power. I have two battery packs and swap them out. My Anker battery has a draw string type case, and it stays in place on the visor with thick quality rubber bands... I just slide out the battery to swap out. The case and rubber band stay in place. I put cardboard (disposable coffee cup liner) on the visor to make sure the rubber band did not damage my visor (to reinforce). Waiting for car manufacturers to have USB ports at the top of visor and headliner. Drive safe and keep well.

I learned some good stuff about the OBD2 connector, nice video - thanks. Now I am concerned in the position you put the dashcam it could block your view. I have only installed about 6 dashcams but everytime I installed up near the top of the windshield in the middle but just on the passenger side. It was always pretty easy with my spudgie to guide the wire behind the molding all the way down the pillar. Most gloveboxes pop off by squeezing it seems, so put behind that and then up the center console to the cigarette lighter plug. Wire was invisible, not pinched and no visibility problems. But again I like the idea of the ODB2 voltage pick off. I agree with the comment that cars should have a 12 volt connector behind the rear view mirror or something.

Hi Ralph! Thank you! glad to hear it helped. But yeah the location is kind of unfortunate, here in California this is the only location where we can legally place our dashcams ugh However the dashcam could be placed higher by running the cable up the A Pillar and specially high in the middle, I definitely agree that is probably the best place to place it. The good thing is that if the Port looks like the typical OBD2 port shape (here is a video showing how it looks kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnbQp6lugp2Vfas ) then it should at least have the power pins functional, which should be enough to get the OBD adapter to work. Just to add that in Parking mode, your camera should be plugged in live all the time, that's why hardwire is the best option. However you have to find a fuse that's Live even if the car is off for it to work. In my Toyota I tapped on the ACC fuse which is 25 amperes I believe. Dashcams only require 3 amp fuse so a 10amp fuse or bigger are your best options.

So this depends on the adapter, assuming the one you buy is from a reputable source. To clarify here, OBD port for power is not harmful to the car in any way. The pins these adapter uses are power pins and go direct to battery, they do not go to your cars computer. Every diagnostic tool out there uses these same pins and they draw more power than a cam.

good job man. i have been running the OBD power unit on 2 of my cars dash cams and now in my R. It works great. I usually leave it in mode 0 since i dont need the cam on most of the time while the engine is off (like in my garage). but it is handy to have mode 1 when needed and out and about. i went with the vantrue n2 pro with dual cams and it's mounted to the center rear view mirror mount. also, you can tuck those wires in all the way w/o any showing, just use a plastic lift tool..very easy. anyway keep the content coming, good stuff and liked.

Hi @Autofun thanks for the informative video! A few questions however: Which types of dash cams can this method work with? Is there any risk of the battery dying out due to powering the dash cam? Oh, and can this power the rear camera too?
@AlexAutoFun
@AlexAutoFun 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shah! the OBD adapter is available in two styles, micro USB and mini USB. If your dashcam has one of those connectors it will work for you. Regarding the battery drain, the adaptor has a automatic shut off, once the battery gets too low, it will turn it's self off to prevent leaving you stranded. Hope this answers your questions and thanks for watching!

@@AlexAutoFunNice video. Very informative. I am getting 2024 RAV4 Hybrid soon. If I use ODB2 connections then will it void new car warranty? Another question is as you said ODB2 adapter cut off power if voltage of battery goes low. How low for 12 volts battery? Any chance that by this kind of arrangement hybrid battery would be affected? Thank you so much in advance. Regards.
@AlexAutoFun
@AlexAutoFun Ай бұрын
@@parimal3506 Thank you Parimal! Ah that's a good question (often a debated one) you would want to check your State's law. In my State supposedly the law prevents a Dealer from denying warranty if someone added something to their car or worked on their own car as long as whatever was added or the work that was done was not the cause of the failure. So let's say you put window tint on your car and your transmission fails, it would be difficult for the dealer to deny it because the tint or the tint install did not affect the transmission. But as simple as that sounds, there are horror stories of dealers not honoring warranty if they see a modification claiming it is what led to the failure. Some owners even had to take them to court or complained directly to manufacturer (since dealers are typically independently owned) to get their warranty honored. Cheers!

You're welcome mavirek! regarding running the dashcam of an external battery, it's definitely possible and some people do run them on portable bank like this one amzn.to/3kQroBR the only issue seems to be heat inside of a car degrades the lithium batteries and you will have to replace the battery pack over time once it stops taking a charge. I already had a dashcam in my old car between 2017 and 2020, and it did its job but was a rear end so wish I had a rear unit or a dual combo system. Definitely making sure I get full coverage next time. In the months prior to that happening though, my car randomly got a load of small dents on the bonnet and no idea what caused it. It could be hail damage but I still wonder if it was someone malicious and I guess we'll never know, so might be worth considering the other modes plus a form of power that works when the car is off to catch things like that in future. The new Garmin 57 dash cam has park mode with the standard cable that comes with the camera. It needs a power source that does not turn off with the key, or to use an independent battery unit that can be charged while the car is being driven. For best video response from the Garmin cameras they should be mounted high in the windscreen and as center as possible. Not difficult to install in most vehicles. The wire is easy to shove under the upper trim and push along to the door pillar trim. It can be shoved into the edge of the trim and worked down. Takes about a hour to do a nice install without removing the trims if the proper technique is used. I then run the wire under the dash to the cigar lighter plug. Under the dash I use small 3M adhesive wire clips. Any excess wire can be easily rolled up and hidden under the dash out of site. Lots of room for this in most vehicles. The wire can be installed to not be visible with very little effort. I also install a rear camera in my SUVs. I've had hit and runs on my SUV where the cameras got the license numbers. I gave the chip to police, and they issued a hit and run fine to the driver who hit my vehicle. The fine where I live is $950 for a hit and run. I was able to also collect for the damage plus the rented car while mine was being serviced. I had one hit and run where the total cost was over $5000. Lots of damage to the front grill, bumper, and the front trims. I got paid in full. Saved by the dash cam!

@AlexAutoFun Жыл бұрын
Hi Viviane100Ms! Unfortunately we are very restricted on the mounting location for the dash cam here in California :( But yes as you pointed out the installer can place the dashcam higher by running the cable up the A Pillar if desired. If there is an airbag in the A-Pillar here is my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4vTamiEl7Ofo68 where I explain some of the issues that can pose. And you are definitely right, a dash cam I think is such a good investment and will quickly pay it self back if there is ever an accident. Cheers!
