Hi dear AutoFun I am from Australia and I have Toyota Camry hybrid 2013 and I believe there is no fuse box in the cabin , I believe two fuse boxes in the engine bay , if you are familiar with this . How can I route wires from engine bay fuse box to the cabin?
@AlexAutoFun2 жыл бұрын
@@MShaafi Hi SHAAFI MEDIA! ah if there is not fuse box inside the cabin, then the installer will have to run the cable thru the car's firewall, some installers will actually drill a hole right thru it, I usually find an existing hole and route the cable thru there. Thanks for discussing the possible interference with an airbag deployment. The general public is not knowledgeable about the design, packaging and deployment of side curtain airbags. As a retired airbag design engineer, I would hate to see a carefully designed, tested and validated supplemental restraint product not work properly because a car owner unintentionally degraded the deployment path or timing. Or injure themself in the process of making a modification.

@BlenderGamerFreaq Жыл бұрын
I'm having a hard time seeing how a small wire can interfere with the airbag? The airbag being inflated happens which such a force that the cable simply would snap or being pulled with the airbag. Has this ever been tested?
@Gryph0508 Жыл бұрын
@Tobias Brage I think there is less concern that it will mess with the airbag and more concern the cable will mess with your face when it deploys.
@samhain9394 Жыл бұрын
@@Gryph0508lol, right? Or the airbag will yank the cable as it inflates and that cable will yank the dashcam, either of which ending up connecting with your face or body.

@@rkhunt007 I wired it with a battery pack between the car and dash cam connection, specifically to avoid this situation
@AlexAutoFun2 ай бұрын
@@rkhunt007 Ah yes it's possible which is why I recommend hardwire kits with a low voltage cut off to avoid draining the battery (some also let you adjust at what point they will turn off). Here is my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zcapKqiduqg8U where I explain this in more detail. Now how long it takes for the battery to get to a specific voltage varies depending on the car's battery, size, age, health condition, SOC and any parasitic draw from other items on the vehicle that use power when the car is off. This is specially common on newer vehicles. For example I have an older Jeep that can sits for months a time with little to no battery draw, then I have a newer car that will almost completely drain my battery in a few weeks if the car is not used (mind you that car does not have any aftermarket devices connected to it). Here is the battery tester I use kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXSxo5mXbbeIgbc if you want to test your battery for capacity and health, it can also perform a parasitic draw test if needed. Cheers!

Excellent video! I really appreciate the breakdown for this specific car model. 6:01 I will say to note, in general, ground should always be the last wire you connect. Correct me if I've overlooked anything, but the reason you connect ground last when jumpstarting is because there's a micro spark when you close the connection, and you would rather have that spark happen on your wide ground cable vs small delicate voltage connection.
@AlexAutoFun Жыл бұрын
Thank you Red! Ah regarding the order of the connections, you have a good point. I'm not a EE but on house mains, grounded appliances have a grounding pin on their plug that is designed to make contact before Neutral or L. Now on a car, jump starting, the reason we connect the positive first is that if the negative sides are connected first, and the car chassis is bumped with the positive clamp you can create a short. By connecting positive sides first, even if the ground clips touch the body of the car nothing will happen since the car chassis it's self ground. But yeah the order of the connections really just depends on the application (and yep even if connecting negative last, there is a chance for sparks as the connection is made, now this can be an issue when jump starting the battery naturally expels gases that are combustible, which is the reason some smart jump starters or battery maintainers will only deliver power after detecting both clamps are connected eliminating the risk of a spark (and partially the reason we connected negative to the car's body not to the actual negative terminal on the battery). Cheers!

@AlexAutoFun8 ай бұрын
Thank you Ted! Ah I haven't done an install on a C8 yet but most installs for the most part are very similar (same techniques and challenges). Regarding a good dash cam for the C8, there are some good options out there. Just depends on what you are looking for in a dash cam. I run different ones on my cars so what I usually tell people looking for the right dash cam for them is to start by picking the style of dash cam (Mirror or classic stick). Then how many cameras does it need to have (1, 2 or 3). Now that you have narrowed your selections, consider how much you want to spend on one, that will narrow your choices even further. Then consider any special features you are looking for such as 360° video, Side Camera, Wi-Fi, Parking monitor without hardwire, cloud support, High Frame Rate. Finally you would want to compare video quality. I have several dashcam reviews on my channel under the playlist "dashcams" if you like to compare them. Cheers!

One question popped up when I watched the video: you used one of the empty fuse slots for the hardwire connection. Normally, the diagram shows how much amp that particular slot supports but there is no info regarding the empty slots on the diagram. Did you presume that the lowest would be 5A, or take a blind shot since most dashcams draw less than 5A overall? Overloading might be an issue, that is why I wanted to ask that. Best regards!

Thank you for this! What would it take for the A pillar airbag to deploy while trying to remove that plastic trim? You mentioned horror stories about this, can you share links to examples of this going wrong and why it happened?
@AlexAutoFun Жыл бұрын
Hi Walker! That is a great question, technically they should only deploy when the car experiences a G load in a specific direction for a certain period of time (as it was to explained to my by an engineer that develops them) However, once a person starts poking and pulling around, the potential for something to cause the air bag to deploy is there. The case I mentioned, sent the tech to the ER where he lasted about a month before he passed. Tragic story and somewhat of freak accident involving an air bag assembly, nevertheless since this was something I saw first hand (the accident scene) it never left my mind. One day I will share this this story on the channel... Cheers!

Hi, can I just connect only the red cable (accessory) and not the yellow batt cable? or do i have to connect all 3 cables? thank you i love your channel.
@AlexAutoFun4 ай бұрын
Thanks Renee! Ah most dash cams that require a 3 lead hardwire kit will usually need all 3 wires to be connected in order for the dash cam to work correctly. What I recommend when someone does not need park monitoring, is just to turn it off in the settings menu (most dash cams will let you turn off this feature). And here is follow up video showing the hardwire process in mode detail kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWPMfIugbZdma5Y Cheers!

2:46 You bring up a very valid point about the possibility of the airbag deploying while pulling off the cover. You mentioned the battery being disconnected but the airbags still having power for some time afterwards. Would an additional safety step of pulling the fuse for the airbag system also help minimize this from happening?
@AlexAutoFun4 ай бұрын
Hi H! Ah I'm not sure if it would, usually airbag systems are design be able to deploy in extreme cases (where vehicle is in the process of being destroyed and battery power is lost during a crash) So I would imagine that there could still be an active system even if a fuse is pulled. But I think it would also vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on how it was designed. Cheers!
@Camachik1725 ай бұрын
I didnt know about the airbag issue, but accidentaly bipased that problem by routing the cable next to the windshield, tucked it into the plastic part of the A pillar thats next to the windshield, and went accros the bottom (instead of the top) of the A pillar, next to the dashboard (nowhere to tuck the cable in here tho)

Hi Anubhav! yeah air bag deployment is a very complicated subject where physics, electronics and theory make up the science behind it. I had an air bag engineer comment on the criticality of affecting the air bag deployment which confirms my suspicions (and viewers comments concerns about dash cam installations and air bag now that they are more common throughout vehicles) on the danger involved when working around air bag (both at the time of the install and after). Truly the science of engineering, and stay tuned video on the air bag accident that I mention coming. But yeah complicated subject indeed (I have also met very senior engineers that work on air bag development and man I can tell you it's a very specialized field) Cheers!

Saying this is a great video and mustache is an understatement. Does disconnecting the battery disable the airbags from activating, just in case? Is it recommended to run the fusebox cabling from the passenger side instead?
@AlexAutoFun Жыл бұрын
Thank you Terrence! Ah yes disconnecting should disable the battery (just keep in mind Air bag systems are designed to function for a period of time even after power loss such as an accident where the battery may be damaged, they usually retain some power reserve for a bit before draining) Regarding running the cable up the A Pillar, I done it from either side, it normally just seems to be a preference on the installer (and in the case of a hardwire kit on the location of the fuse box, sometimes they are in the passenger side). For my cases, if I have multiple cables I try to spread them out so they fit in the trim, for example I would run power and rear camera extension on side and the GPS cable antenna (if present) on the passenger side. Hope this helps, Cheers!

Hello , thanks for your videos very well explained. Can you tell me when to use a 3 wire kit or a 2 wire kit, and if you know , it is safe to hardwire a highlander hybrid?. Thanks so much.
@AlexAutoFun2 жыл бұрын
You're He tor Moreno! and thank you! ah yes regarding 2 vs 3 wire hardwire kits, the hardwire kit required will be determined by the dash cam you are using. Some require a 2 wire hardwire kit and some require a 3 wire hardwire kit. Here is a video where I explain the differences in more detail kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zcapKqiduqg8U Regarding hardwire in a hybrid, this is going to depend greatly on the Make, Model, and yr of the car. Some hybrids have a tiny car battery and a hardwire kit will not yield the same benefit as in gasoline cars with a full size battery. Also in some hybrids (and some electric EVs) are sensitive to hardwire kits and may throw a code if a hardwire kit is connected. The best way to find out if your vehicle is compatible with a hardwire kit would be to check the owners manual or contact the dealer or manufacturer to check if it is. Hope this helps, Cheers!

I'm in the process of searching for a good dash cam with a rear camera as well as motion sensor for parking, but then I realized I wouldn't be able to install it myself because it has to be hard wired. Can any auto shop install these cameras, or maybe the dealership where I bought the car? Thank you for all the detailed information, I feel like I can actually have a more intelligent conversation, even if I'm afraid to install it myself.

Thank you T L! There are also dedicated dash cam installers too. So I would recommend getting a couple quotes from several places to check on pricing but also to check if they are experienced on it (and ideally licensed and insured). Cheers!

Hi P! Ah if you are trying to access your camera when are away from it nope, Wifi enabled dash cams do not let you access them while your away from the car. What you are looking for is a Cloud connected dash cam like this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3Ovp6RojZeGrbM or this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHKoeWecZ9qfe9U (live video, tracking, notifications to your phone etc.) Now some 70mai dash cams do have cloud functionality with a special hardwire kit however it is limited to areas in Europe and Asia. Im assuming all cars have the fuse box power part on the right side (talking about the part where you probed the sides of the fuse box slots)? Or should I buy a probe o: Also, do you know if hardwiring like this drains the battery when using the dash cam's "parking mode"? Great video!
@AlexAutoFun Жыл бұрын
Thank you Cookies! Ah the location of the fuse box can vary from car to car. The car on this video actually has a fuse box on the left side, right side and engine compartment (and others even have them in the trunk of the car). Regarding if a hardwire kit will drain your battery, this will depend on your dash cam's hardwire kit. If the dash cam supports park mode, then it will turn off and enter parking monitoring while the car is off to reduce battery drain, additionally if some hardwire kits supports low voltage cut off, that adds another prevention measure against draining your battery. Here is my video where I cover hardwire kits and their differences to look for kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zcapKqiduqg8U Cheers!
