Thomas, I've said it before some time ago, I think car manufacturers would be wise to have you test drive their cars before they release them or go into full final production. Often times they don't catch the things that you do that need more attention. It would be money very well spent on their part.

Come on, i love Thomas but every single person have a diff opinion. Thomas it's great but not God. He can like something that other people doesn't. When he said that the back sit should't be unlock if someone it's seated there...well. 1st i am sure the cameraman wasn't "seated" in his sit. 2nd. you manage that from the front sit. This is not an apartment....ok? before you surf the screen, find the option and click on it....you can turn your sweet head to see if your fragile 124 yo grandma it's seated there.....

Nice review, good looking car, I think Volvo is doing great with the current line of cars. As for the infotainment system and the fingerprints there is a very simple solution, screen cover. I got one on my XC90 and no more fingerprints and it covers 100% of the screen. As for the climate control knobs, well actually you don't have to take your hands off the steering wheel since the car has voice commands and you just order it to set the temperature and you can set it even individually.

Way better looking with the exterior and especially with the interior ambience, utilization of space against BMW X1 and Audi Q2 ( maybe even against new VW T-Roc ). Autogefühl Sadly, Volvo dealers are unicorns here. On some investigation it's apparently around €47000 tops. Which is pretty cheap here as compared to the X1 or GLA.

I watch a lot of car review videos and i have to say your videos are the most concise in describing the whole experience. the cars i have tested myself, i usually agree with your reviews on all accounts, really useful to find the next right car. one thing perhaps to add to your reviews, could be to explore the family aspect a bit more. i.e. one thing i found with most volvo suvs is that the view out for todlers and smaller kids is quite terrible, increasing the chance for car sickness as well as making the ride more boring for them. and there nothing that spoils the autogefühl quite like a frustrated toddler:)

Best SUV from VOLVO IMHO.Comfortable,nimble,and pretty affordable compared to other Volvo cars.You get a lot of car for your money,safety features ,etc. Still a little pricey compared to small SUV from other brands( Peugot,Opel,Citroen) but still worth it. Great video as always Thomas! Keep it up!

Volvos usually consume more fuel than the German competition yes. BUT! You don't have to fill them up with engine oil all the time as many German cars (especially Audi) due to soft piston rings and other things linked to trying to reach lower fuel consumption. Also Volvos cam chains last, this is a major problem for many German manufacturers.

I really dislike the fake exhaust so many suv's have nowdays. I got my Skoda Karoq finaly last week and reason why i like Skoda is they didnt put fake exhausts. Looks much better that way. This Volvo is nice looking apart from exhaust but a bit too pricey for small compact suv segment when you actually add decent trim level and some extras. Overall good review Thomas! I suggest one thing. The Italian reviewer i saw on youtube does even more detailed review by lifting cars up and look UNDER it also to see how car has been built there. It gives much more for car buyers whats usually hidden for most customers :) Just an idea how to make it even better.

Thanks! Some cars use better suspension solution but customers wont understand why without showing it actually. I didnt mean this should be done for every car. Driving part is where you feel how it drives on different roads but suspension playes a lot role in that. Example Jaguar E-Pace uses quite different suspension than many other suv's but seeing that under the car explains why :)

Hi Thomas, the last time I wrote to you asking for your advices between Macan base model vs AMG43 GLC. But now I think this is the one to go for, value-wise. I can have XC40 T5 R design for 60,000€ while I have to pay 150,000€ for Macan 4 cylinders or 120,000€ for GLC43. I know it will not be as great as a driver ‘s car as a Porsche, but at this price difference, I accept it. I tried GLC43 I felt it lacked mid range torque, need to rev hard, unsuitable for out of track use. Thanks for the review. And do you like it in R Design Blue ? I lov it.

Hello Thomas, I have enjoyed your review very much. Although I cannot agree on your opinion about the “fake exhaust” ends. I think it is a very good technical solution because ; - The exhaust system will expand when it is heated by the trespassing exhaust gasses. When the exhaust tips were connected with the exhaust system, this would result in moving the exhaust tips within the bumper. Causing that the construction must be very rigid, thus being more expensive and having more weight. A compensator in the exhaust line is also needed to compensate the expansion (length). A compensator is expensive and is also something that need replacement over time. The loose exhaust tips also having the advantage that they do not heat up by the exhaust system. The exhaust gasses are mixed with the air that can flow through from the back side of the tips. This is keeping the temperature within the desired range for the plastic bumper parts. In my opinion it is a very good solution, both technical and design wise. Maybe you reconsider your opinion regarding exhaust tips. Anyway, I’m looking forward to your next review! Regards, Cor.

I am amazed that Volvo was able to develop the XC40 so fast and so perfect. Here in Canada we will be getting the T4 with 180HP lather. The car is a hit for Volvo Canada already after being introduced 2 weeks ago.

Not troubled by "fake" exhaust, which are really just trim surrounds and nicer for bumper integration that "pipes" sticking out, IMO.

Here's my issue with this. I priced an R design like I'd want, not loaded, but nice wheels, and it was about $43,000 US. And for the first 6 months at least it will sell at about MSRP. Then I look at something like a Kia Sportage SX which has even more equipment, and with discounts they're about $30,000. They also, unlike many Kias, resale well. And it has a 5 year /10 year warranty, vs Volvo's 4. So it's about 50% more for a slight quickness advantage and some nicer interior materials. And as a Volvo owner I know they aren't cheap to fix out of warranty. Mainstream brand compact SUVs have advanced so far in the past few years it's hard to justify the price difference for a slightly more refined experience.

Both are very good cars. The X1 consumes less fuel, is more agile to drive and seems to be a more refined car with more experience. The XC40 however delivers some interesting new approaches.

Previous one was not even proper SUV, like the Audi Q2 is not. This one has an adequate ground clearance, possibly even not mentioned in this review. Anything else is about the same as on many modern cars with glass cockpits.

Well the Diesel engine does not change the whole car. Consumption will be a little less. We ll present you different versions of the XC40 in future for sure, Plugin-Hybrid coming up, also the 3-cyl petrol.... Sound was really nice for a small SUV

Hi Thomas I've an "old" Xc60 r-Design don't you find the steering of these new Volvo a bit light feeling for who likes some sport driving, I also think as you that detalis and materials are more nice and "fresh" in this xc40 than xc60. I also hate the glossy black in the interiors !

Nicky Qian - agree. I can't find a HUD on the configurator for XC40. An HUD - even a basic one - is good, especially when you have ACC info displayed...

Our CX-3 has a simple HUD, and it's very useful. A Tiguan HUD works well.

I personally don’t mind fake exhaust tips but what I don’t like is when the tips are blocked off and the exhaust goes out the bottom or side. Idk y I know it doesn’t really matter but that just seems cheep to me.

17:46 The coolant is filled above maximum. BTW This is my favorite Volvo. I'm still not sure I like the side profile, but the rest of it is awesome.

I have a V40 T5 and I'd say they are excellent on fuel! Sure you can't average what they say but it doesn't drink much for 253bhp!

Great review , the audi q3 and the mercedes GLA looks way dated according to this car..even materials it beats them hands down..looking forward for the T3 engine review on this car..keep it up 👍👍

I really wanted a xc40 but due high engines it didn't fit in my budget. I ordered a astra ST. In few years ill go for the new v60s :) I did take a test drive. Just amazing feeling thats why Im going to pick a V60 after due the current models beeing too old media wise :)
