The rear view camera really needs an upgrade, actually the whole display is kinda low res. That being said everything else about the car is extremelly well designed.

Great review! I drive a 2016 2.0 Mazda 6. Other than needing a battery change in the previous scheduled service, it has been very reliable for the past 2 years of ownership with around 48000km mileage. Average 7.7 litres/ 100km.

Great reviews Thomas! I watch many as I am looking for a new car. I currently own and drive the previous version of this Mazda6 Wagon in Touring form with a 2.2TD engine. 160,000km on the clock over 6 years, love the car for all the reasons you gave. Super reliable, solid, fun, great handling for what it is. Trying to tempt myself into a BMW X1 but keep coming back to this... almost certain to get another Mazda6 wagon in the Atenza format. Keep up these great reviews! (one note the engine did pop it's oil pump, 30 days after the warrantee ran out but Mazda were great, said it shouldn't happen, gave me a fill in car and replaced the whole engine, no charge - they believe in their cars and back that you with customer support and service... another reason I will almost certainly go back to Mazda)

Autogefühl Wow great to hear back from you Thomas, you’ve become a bit of an auto-hero for me. Your reviews really are terrific. For a few specific cars I looked at many many different KZbin reviews and yours are the best! You give great, thoughtful detail from design changes over previous models, through engineering features, safety and infotainment features and then a brilliant mix of internal and external shots during the on road reviews. All of this really helps enormously in the important decision making many of us only do every few years. The breadth of experience you have of so many cars means that when you impresses you it is clear that it is a good car. So I was happy that you liked the Mazda6 a lot, I feel certain that I will buy a new one now with your review. Finally, yes I was impressed at Mazda Australia’s response... I didn’t even have to ask or to hassle them. The guy in the service centre said, hmmm let me talk to the manager - one day later the National service manager from head office called with their good news for me. Meantime keep up the great work and accept my thanks and admiration from the other side of the planet!

The interior looks excellent! At least the design seems more minimalist and the overall colours and layout seems great. A lot better than some of the premium brands... Also it seems to me that Mazda (as well as for example the Corean brands) keep giving their customer more for (more or less) the same price and that's what I call customer care! :) Also, I must say I really liked that you made reference to the reliability reputation/ history as it is a very important aspect for me in a car! Keep it up!

Koreans are no longer cheap, at least in Europe. Their new offerings cost pretty much as much as VWs.
@JoseFerreira-zb7wh
@JoseFerreira-zb7wh 6 жыл бұрын
They´re not as cheap as they used to be, but they´re far from being expensive. But in my opinion it's justified as they keep making better and better products and just don't stop evolving. They have a good politic as they listen to their costumers criticisms and complaints and address them in the next models they launch. I don´t know where you´re from but I'm from Portugal and here Corean cars are still the best value you can have. I wouldn´t call them cheap but definitely affordable. For example, with similar engines, the base VW Golf is still a bit more expensive than the top spec Kia Ceed. (In Portugal at least)
@sic22l
@sic22l 6 жыл бұрын
@José Ferreira Let me put it this way. Hyundai i30 costs as much as VW Golf. Only the Honda Civic is more expensive non-premium compact. People don't buy top-spec compacts, because for the same money they can get some midsize sedans. Most people buy medium trims where Koreans don;t shine.
@JoseFerreira-zb7wh
@JoseFerreira-zb7wh 6 жыл бұрын
We agree to disagree. :) In Portugal it isn't. i30 is way cheaper than VW Golf. The people I know that have korean cars, buy them exactly because they can have a top spec model with all the extras for more or less the same money as a base VW car.

the gearbox, cover the gearbox. forget the engine, it's a traditional petrol engine with 4 cylinders, the most common engine in the history of mechanics. the gearbox is what people have questions about, as that's the controversial component of mazda. unlike others, they use torque converter gearboxes, not double clutch. unlike others, they have 6 speed one, not 7/8/10 speeds. what's that like to drive? is it quick? is it laggy? is it smooth?

白金 having owned a 2016 Mazda 6 and now the proud owner of a 2018 Mazda 6 Signature with Turbo, I have to say relatively speaking that the door and handle quality has improved a lot. Personally, I find Audi's more recent door handle design quite cheap, compared to older designs. In fact I think the Golf has a better quality door and handle design and construction. But Mazda has defintely improved in this area where I dont feel like the door is made of tin.

What I think is most important: new improved diesel becomes AdBlue so it works with less consumption and with higher compression ratio does not need complicated (and faulty - well known exhaust camshaft wear, following vacuum pump clogging and damaged turbochargers) IDEVA system for back suction of exhaust gases when running the engine cold. Anyway I switched from 2014 6 Wagon 2.2D (175hp with VersaTune upgrade to 200hp) to Insignia Country Tourer 2.0T (Buick Regal Tour X in US) due to lack of space and low power that Mazda now offers in Europe. After a few thousand kilometers I find Country Tourer more versatile, it's sporty when I need power (and switch-on Sport mode) and flying carpet-like, when i drive bad or gravel roads in Tour mode. There's plenty of space and the whole car is beyond that it is much more spacious, somehow more robust built.

I mostly agree. But the looks of contry tourer... not really comparable with mazda. It is also an opel, so the long term reliability should not be all that great.

I personally love the Mazda 6 exterior and interior design, despite having driven several second-hand German cars and Volvos almost for the past 20 years. What I like especially that the dashboard view right behind the steering wheel is quite classic-looking with analogic speedometer. Seems like quite a sensible car.

Thank you very much for this detailed and relaxed review. A lot of helpful information. I really enjoyed it. As I would like a silent car more than anything and I can't have the possibility to test many of them, can you, please, tell us, which cars are actually quieter or as quiet as Mazda 6 tourer? Luxury cars are clearly out of the question... but Mazda 6 battles with the VW Passat variant... is that quieter, for example?

I'm so disappointed that the good majority of my country can't appreciate wagons (estates/combis...depending on who you ask ;) ) or consider them as a viable choice... maybe then manufacturers would be more apt to bringing them over here! Not all of us find the high profile of a crossover incredibly necessary when we want a versatile and spacious car! I think it's safe to say that many of the apprehensive Americans can let go of the association with boxy, late 20th century land-yachts...some of these modern wagons are quite sharp looking! This one certainly is :)
@Zeus-se9pv
@Zeus-se9pv 6 жыл бұрын
What's the reason for Americans not buying estates? In Europe I think estates are more popular than sedans, which makes sense to me since they're more practical.
@Stratocoaster08
@Stratocoaster08 6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% ...I think, for some reason, Americans equate wagons to the old '70's Station Wagon' look (The Truckster from National Lampoon's comes to mind...) and that association just turns Americans off, I guess... which is a shame because they are disliked over a purely subjective and superficial reason. Whenever more cargo space is desired, I suppose most Americans just go with crossovers. Many of which I think are LESS practical than wagons...not to mention a far different driving dynamic... rather than going with a 'car' that has more practicality, in space, efficiency, and familiarity to typical sedan/family car drivers...all the efforts are put into making crossovers that look far larger than the usable space it actually provides. That, or just a truck. Seeing as those are often more luxurious than premium brand 'executive' cars, these days...

Excellent Review Thomas. Regards to Katharina. Loved the driving part as always - "Live on tape" etc! And the "Alcantara Pet!" Nice car. UK online configurator not working for this car, but it seems you're very limited in engine/trans combination (no petrol auto on top model?), and it seems if you want a HUD, or heated steering wheel, BLIS, ACC, or a 350 cam or LED's, you have to get top-spec car only and you end up with leather! Shame you can't spec up an ordinary Mazda6 as required. Seems similar story with the nice CX-5. I could be wrong! Many thanks Thomas.

yes it is a shame, with our new CX-5 petrol in UK, no safety pack or sunroof option, those were diesel only. they also need to wise-up to having turbos fitted, overtaking on Scottish highland roads with a 2.0L NA engine, is not effortless, even after some magic from Quantum Tuning.
@alfonsodriver1324
@alfonsodriver1324 6 жыл бұрын
Mogsy28uk - sorry to hear CX-5 with chipped petrol engine is not relaxing overtaking in Scottish Highlands. Irony, because probably the diesel would have more go? And use less fuel. The idea of the diesel engine has now been ransacked, and no one seems to like them anymore. And I didn't know about how limited Mazda were with specifying useful safety extras on certain trims - that's quite limiting. Cheers.

(I used to meet people like that rather often working at customer locations and driving through middle europe a lot). Anyway great review, always love to see these mid segment cars on review. In general I noticed the cheaper and mid segment/class manufacturers upped their game in certain points which is great to see. Another great 'thmooth' review Thomas :D best part was when you are asking how the sound isolation is and you don't hear a response from your codriver. Indeed quiet! 😁 As for the car, it has some drawbacks and the segment competition is ferocious. E.g. the waste of space of such a long car was long time an issue that e.g. Opel had to address in their latest models. Lack of quality in not so obvious parts, as you noticed, does not give confidence: " what will be the next disappointment?" Also a big question mark is long term reliability of the chassis and parts below. Mazda still does not have a good reputation in that.

Oh, and Thomas...if you're sticking to the seat turn on the COOLED SEATS ffs! Mazda has one of the best systems in the business. I tried it out on a 98f day in Texas and could feel it cooling immediately unlike some so called "cooled seats". It's clear you don't really like Mazda, (not one of your favorite car makers) but don't complain about sticky seats if you refuse to test an equipped feature that eliminates that..

I dont favour any brand, trust me. I m professional. If u have fabric seats u just dont need cooling that often. Also refer to our extensive resources posted below.

We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-2hq2Qjd-jmsU List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Paf3p8gMZng5I) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf 3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future. More special video episodes: 1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpecYn6dl7uVgLM 2. And another one right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn6xmJaCepV_erc 3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJrTiqmredh8bNU timecode starting 27:46 4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZirpGVpbsd0pKc 5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change! Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

@special_circumstancs

Harmonic has to do with interactions of waves (usually musical but can be any physical waveform). It can be used as an adjective but is most often used as a noun. For example: "A Porsche 911 engine being taken to red-line produces many upper-order harmonics." Harmonious simply means pleasing to the ear... sweet-sounding. For example: "A Porsche 911 engine being taken to red-line produces a wonderfully harmonious sound."

Great review! Super late reply by me, but I have a 2017 model of the 'touring' trim in Australia. Here the 2018 and later years the higher end models come with the 2.5 turbo. Mine is the 2.5 NA wagon/estate. Coming from a manual car I feel the auto transmission in the normal mode is a little too conservative (although encourages relaxed driving) and then sport mode holds on to the high revs a bit too much. Of course thanks to the paddles you can control this yourself, but just something I feel could be improved. I wish my model had that button to turn on the rear camera, I'm always putting it in reverse just to see if I'm in the car park perfectly or not haha. Overall very much enjoying the car, I've had it for two months and I'm the second owner, it has done 95,000km. It feels pretty much as good as new, the steering wheel has gone shiny from use but still has good grip and feels good, that's the only noticeable wear I can advise. I wanted a Subaru Levorg 2.0l but it was a fair bit more expensive, with the liberty wagon gone for a while there weren't many Japanese wagons to choose from and I'm quite happy with the choice so far. Hope this helps someone.

Coming back to your reference about premium brands, how would you compare this Mazda with an Audi A4 or Mercedes C-Klasse in terms of interior quality, sound insulation and engine and gearbox refinement? Depends on the country, cars from new EU memberstates (Slo, Croatia, Slowakia etc.) are listed up to 9.000 EUR lower than most expensive memberstates (Austria)... I know I would be buying a 2.5 turbo, if available. Would probably not cost more than 2-3.000 EUR more than 2.5 NA.
@Mogsy28uk
@Mogsy28uk 6 жыл бұрын
it would be better to offer the 2.0L as a turbo option, and leave the 2.5 as NA, but i think Mazda are falling behind a little on this, smaller engines and turbos are the way the market is going for the high volume models (Mazda 6 vs Mondeo etc). Performance models are also proving popular on mainstream models including SUV, Mazda has nothing in this range.

I suspect that Europe might see it next year. Mazda seems to be about a year behind in Europe compared to USA, and they just added the 2.5T option here near the start of 2018. It's selling extremely well, too.
