Thank you for doing the review in English. Great review. I ordered a 2018 STI last week. I wasn't sure if I should get this car initially until I realized that cars like this just won't be around in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation STI will have electric steering and a somewhat bland engine with rev hang like the WRX in the interest of fuel economy and emissions. They might even axe the current STI's superior AWD system to save weight and rely on brake vectoring only for slip control. I hope I'm wrong. Fast forward 10 years from now and you probably will have only a small handful of choices on the market that aren't hybrids with automatic transmissions. By then, sports cars might be exclusive and too expensive for the working class. I say smoke 'em while you got'em and have fun now before it's too late.

Thomas does one of the best car reviews on the planet. You go through every detail from styling cues to driving experience. I am a fan! You search for car reviews in KZbin and end up with gazillion results with pimple poppers carrying their cell phone to their nearest dealer and walking around the cars and calling it a "Review". Duh. Then you end up here and you are like...'Finally some honest review"!

It looks like you had a lot of fun filming your impressions of the WRX STi. I share your appreciation the 90s era charm of the the STi, even if it doesn't have the same level of refinement of rivals such as the Golf R. It's a bit of a shame that you don't have access to the standard WRX in Germany, as they are very popular here in the U.S. , and it makes for a much better everyday car.
@autogefuehl7 жыл бұрын
+Eric Shea true!
@vossler3607 жыл бұрын
Outdoor Layne, while you are correct to say that the WRX has a more tractable torque curve, thanks to its twin-scroll turbo, I feel that you overlook other features of the WRX that makes it a better everyday car as compared to the WRX STi. The WRX has a lower fuel consumption relative to the STi. The WRX has a lower weight relative to the STi. While the WRX STi has a more robust gearbox and AWD system, these features do not necessarily translate to a better everyday car for the street.
@vossler3607 жыл бұрын
Outdoor Layne, I agree that the STi is a great car on the track, but that doesn't make it the better car on the street. As I've previously mentioned, the FA20 is a much better engine for the street, with a flat torque curve after 2000 rpm. The WRX weighs around 200 pounds less than the STi, which you can feel on the street. While the STi has a better AWD system, you won't feel it on the street. If you also consider that the WRX has far better fuel efficiency, a more compliant suspension, and costs about $10k less than the STi, then you should agree that the WRX is the better everyday car. Again, a better everyday car is not the same as a better track-day car. The WRX and the STi are different cars with different missions, and both can be good in their own way.
@vossler3607 жыл бұрын
Outdoor Layne, I don't disagree with you that the STi is the better track-day choice when compared to the WRX. I agree that the STi offers additional features over the WRX for a good value, but that only matters if you desire those same features. However, my concern here is that the measure that is being evaluated is the better everyday sporty car, which I'll define as: -a car that spends most of its time on public roads -a car that serves as both basic transportation and entertainment -a car that rarely visits the track Consider that the relationship between the WRX and WRX STi is equivalent to those of the Focus ST and RS, or the Golf GTI and R, or the Civic Si and Type R. You'll note that there is one "sport" variant, and there is a "sport #" variant. In general, when you make a car better suited for the track, you make compromises for everyday use. This is why there are multiple variants of the same chassis: to accommodate different uses. And in this respect, the WRX would be the better everyday car, while the STi would be the better track toy. For the record, I've had multiple WRXs from the first years that they were available in the U.S., and I've used them primarily for everyday transportation as well as "spirited" driving on public roads. I also have a dedicated weekend toy, which can have a loud exhaust, sticky tires, very stiff suspension, and be super light. It's a lot of fun, but I wouldn't want to use it for basic transportation. Now if you can only have one car for both everyday and for track, and you spend more time on the track, then the STi could be the better choice.

Excellent review! One of the best that I've watched about this car here on KZbin. This car has been already more than a decade, the car of my dreams, it has been so long that I've been dreaming about buying one. It's a great shame that this car is sold at a so expensive price in my country, it's actually sold by almost the double of the price that people pays in North America or Europe, but with faith in God I will have enough money to pay for it it in the beginning of the next year. The only thing that lacks in your review was to drive it in a unpaved road, but I know that it might be something not that simple to do in Germany. But when I buy mine, one the the things that I must do anyway is to drive it in an unpaved dirty road to see how the AWD works and to get that real rally race feeling and sensation.

That green fluid is conservation fluid applied in japan, to stop moisture from entering and also has some kind of pest repellent element to it as well. All of them came like this. In 2018 models was a bit more yellowish color. Its also sticky like honey. I still have it on some parts of the engine bay, even though it was washed a few times already 😂. A lot of things with this car are very nonsense / quirky. Better you dont ask or think too much about it, just accept the car as it is. Its like a shelter dog, dont judge it, just love it and it will be the best and most loyal companion you ever had! 😊

First ever time I saw the Impreza hatch, totally in love with the looks and that signature boxer engine sound, just wow! I honestly thought it resembled one of my other fave car - AMC Pacer ( I know a lot out there loathe it, their opinion - wrong. ) New car looks the part of glories past, with previous gold wheels now a shade of grey and seeing the entire engine is super., tops to Subaru. Not a fan of plastic covers. ( 10:30 ) Hah ha ha.. car I think is 50/50 babe magnet/boy-girl racer attitude and also just being an honest fan of the WRX/STi. Pity Subaru doesn't build a small hatch just so they can enter the WRC series again and maybe even win another world title. Thumbs up Thomas for another satisfying review. Huge fan of late great Colin McRae and co-drivers' Derek Ringer and Nicky Grist.

Hi, Thomas! I bet you had a lot of fun In this video! For the number of little funny jokes, one can see that, haha! What amazing car. Next to my city, there's a Subaru dealer and I will go to check this beauty out! It's a totally different animal than other sports cars. I only complain about the sound of the engine, which seems a little bit like an old 1968 VW Beetle... What a heresy I'm saying... It has 300 hp, for God sake, haha! I think it's because its flat engine, I don't know. What is unquestionable is the huge sportiness and fun this car delivers. Loved the video!

No doubt that there are better cars than this. There are faster cars, or smoother cars, or more luxurious and sporty, but for me this car just had that nostalgic sti look which I use to see when I was a teen and love. It's got a look from 15 years a go... But maybe that's why it appeals to me. It's raw yet also refined in some ways. This along with the now out of production evo are great cars for twisty roads.

Great review. The spoiler reminds me a lot of my old Honda Prelude which had a darker blue colour. Nice that this car gives so many options for setting the AWD & suspension. If I owned one I would go crazy trying different settings all day. Just one strange thing is with such an Alcantara look inside the car, the steering rim is still ordinary leather (or imitation leather), I would have thought being a sports car it would also be Leather Alcantara but maybe a good thing as they can get stained very easily. Cheers.

Just terrific automotive journalism and really outstanding video presentation by you Tomas and all the other Team Reviewers and the Videographers. First Class!! Quick question - I saw that in some of the early reviews there was a woman Reviewer (Christine?) - which I thought was unique as she presented the autos from a female perspective which added a very interesting dimension - yet I don't see her in later Reviews. Very nice video ! Just love this legendary car. This car doesn't really need better interiors becouse it must be so "simple" and sporty. Personally I would go back with a GC8/22B interior, that was 100% RALLY ! Who needs a luxury living room on wheels, well just buy a BMW, Audi or Mercedes. There is NO COMPROMISE with this car. I'm a WRX STi owner since many years and I owned a 1999 GT and two 2011 WRX STi and I can tell you ..... this car with this 2.5l Engine (EJ25) really needs some Forged Pistons again becouse that engine is so strong and reliable 'till it stays stock ! That's the only one problem of the WRX STI practically and that's very sad becouse the STis in Japan do have stronger engines with forged pistons and the rest of the world NOT ! I never understood why ?!!!!!! Thanks for this Video Thomas. Have a nice day :D
@autogefuehl7 жыл бұрын
thanks! that might be those stronger japanese regulations? That also forged the JDM trend afaik
@MrPuerAeternus7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Unfortunately there are too many engine failures all over the world with just a simple ECU-Tuning or a simple Turboback Exhaust System and that's really sad. It's not a crap engine, it just have not enough strong internals ( like Pistons for example ). If you want to reach 400 HP ( so +100HP) you need necessary to upgrade those engine parts with something better like Tomei or Cosworth parts and that's very expansive. This is a kind of car for real fanboys who love this Brand but I think that everyone should know the truth about that. I would buy it again and again but as said ....this is a car for fanboys and I am one of them :D Best regards from Switzerland ;)
@Tajarski7 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me, what cost of forged parts for, par example, 2017 STI ? Something what will be able to keep +100HP inside savefly? Just wondering loud? :)
@MrPuerAeternus7 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to say becouse prices are different. It depends where you live. I just can talk about Europe. Take a Look on Ebay and look for Forged Pistons and Connecting Rods. You should get both for 1200 - 1500 Dollars I think but .... how much money needs a very good Mechanic/Tuner in your Land to mount them, I don't know :D

Still a superb looking car I absolutely love it. It just a sham he technology hasn't kept pace. If you buy a brand new one in the UK now the initial vehicle tax and the ongoing road tax is extremely high in comparison to many of the same vehicles with a similar level of performance. Really, the STi should have 400 odd bhp now to have kept pace with the German brands, and even the likes of Ford, Seat and VW. Still...great looking car, and I smile when I rare see one on the road!

Josh Charlie I disagree, I don't think the numbers is the way to measure these cars. And for this one, it'd be much more interesting to offer a basic *lighter* model with no rear seats, no aircon and no "infotainment" etc.

So Germany doesn't get the regular WRX? Why is that? And the regular WRX starts at $26,500 in the US.

The new civic has comparable styling. Well atleast if you look at it from the front, the back is weird. Anyways, great Review as allways!

Never met a girl that liked Subaru STI. I was told my Wrx STI looks like a shopping cart with that ridiculous wing.

You can find an ATS-V for comparable money to the Euro price -much better deal, though no awd.

Hi Thomas - How do you find the WRX STi compared to the Civic Type R that you drove? Which one do you prefer and why?
@autogefuehl4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm.. good question. Indeed they are in a way quite similar. Hard to tell really, best is to enjoy both reviews full length and then see for yourself =)

@@autogefuehl Hi Thomas and Thank you for your in-depth, full length and Full HD Reviews. I did watch both the STi Review and the Type R review a month ago. However was wondering now in hindsight which is YOUR preferred choice. I value your opinion because I do not get the chance to drive so many cars. Therefore which is number 1 and which is your number 2 choice? Agreed that both are good but if you had to pick 1 and 2 what would it be ? Thanking you again.

Imho both suspensions are too stiff for every day riding. I would take the highest hp version of the normal version each

I like overall this vehicle, but this bad sound isolation is very annoying. I would guess for car manufactured 2017 it should have some useful features like good sound isolation. I know that it is primarily made for people doing track days or cornenrs in the mountains etc., but I would rather be able to travel in comfort on the autobahn as wellat say 150-160 kmh. That's why i would go for a german sedane. Just personal opinion :).

Thanks for a great review. Why not also please review the BRZ which is a less spacious but more daily driver sports car.
