How well explained!!! Such a difficult topic in such simple language is a wonderful effort to anyone with little knowledge of a very common medical condition often made more confusing by practitioners. Thank you Ma'am. Really admirable.

Dr. Wendi, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making these extremely clear and concise videos. I have difficulty with pure auditory memory, but your captions and illustrations are so helpful. These processes are fascinating to me! I also have Hashimoto's, so this really helps me understand the complexity behind it. Question: When a person like me who can't eat certain food, not because of an allergy, but also not necessarily because of digestive issues either, but because of molecular mimicry since anti-thyroid antibodies attack when gluten is present - WHAT is that called please? Thank you again!
@DrWendi
@DrWendi 2 жыл бұрын
I would just call it a cross reactivity. When the immune system reacts to foods that are similar to any proteins in our body then it can make a thyroid autoimmune condition, like Hashimoto's worse for sure. The most common foods that have been shown to react with thyroid proteins include, soy, gluten, and dairy, but sometimes people can also react to other things like eggs, rice, yeast or oats. I am happy to hear you found the video interesting :D

Thank you for educating us. As I have Autoimmune Hepatitis I really appreciate this explanation of what is going on. I am prescribed an immunosuppressant and Vit D and Calcium as I had to have Prednisolone to begin with. I do also have asthma and multiple allergies and food intolerance s we I actually played in the dirt but, maybe not until the age of 3. This was in the country of my birth. When I was 6 we went back to the country of my family’s origin which is where the asthma started after a bout of bronchitis. I’ve had 2 or 3 attacks of anaphylaxis. Currently allergic to 2 native grasses which is unfortunate as I love gardening. This in a way is nothing compared to the Autoimmune Hepatitis ! I have another autoimmune disease, one that I find embarrassing, it’s called Lichen Schlerosus.

Is there any studies indicating the increasing autoimmune disorders may correlate to general elevated homeostatic insulin level, which may cause inflammation, in industrialized societies nowadays?
@DrWendi
@DrWendi 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't come across any studies that specifically correlate high blood sugar or insulin resistance with autoimmune diseases but people that have type 1 diabetes, which is autoimmune, is correlated with an increased risk of other autoimmune diseases. But, whether that is because of a genetic predisposition to autoimmunity of if it is related to unregulated blood sugar is not known. Autoimmune diseases are correlated with increased inflammation, for example, someone with ulcerative colitis is more likely to have a flare up if they have increased inflammation, and increased blood sugar that is not properly regulated can increase inflammation and trigger a flare up. I don't think autimmune diseases can be caused directly by just increased blood sugar or insulin because you would need to have autoreactive immune cells. Autoreactive B and T cells can come about from incomplete negative selection during our early years but they may not have an effect until later in life, such as puberty or older, and if they are there, then inflammation can trigger them. Also, we can become exposed to pathogens that mimic human proteins that can trigger antibody production that will react with the pathogen as well as a human protein and then unregulated blood sugar and inflammation can then trigger a reaction. There are many factors that could be involved in the higer rates of autoimmune diseases in industrialized countries but probably several factors have to combine to increase risk. I hope that helps.

Namastey doctor, Could you please guide me if there is a relationship between high IGE and positive ANA ? Also ,any relationship between high serum covid antibody and positive ANA ? How to go about a proper diagnosis and management after getting positive ANA?What are the immediate next steps ?
@DrWendi
@DrWendi Жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, antinuclear antibodies are an autoimmune reaction that do also involve IgE antibodies, so it is a type of allergic response. As for covid, there is not a lot of research yet but it does look like there are people having allergic and autoimmune reactions to the spike protein, whether from infection or vaccination. As for diagnosis, because covid is such a weirdly touchy subject, there are few doctors that will seem to want to test for or admit the possibility of reactions because they are scared it will make people not want to get more vaccinations. For any type of autoimmune or allergic reactions, regardless of the cause, the key is to get your immune system back into regulation and not over-reacting. You can do this at least in part by avoiding any kind of toxins that will make the immune system over-react, including alcohol, smoking, pesticides, pollution etc, try to minimize exposure to bad stuff, even a good water filter is a good idea. And then help the immune system with really good nutrition, protein, and especially plant foods that contain antioxidants (organic or home grown is better because there is less pesticide residue), omega 3 fatty acids, many things like green tea, colourful plants, herbs like turmeric and cinnamon have amazing benefits for the immune system, grow your own sprouts, get enough sleep to keep cortisol down, exercise and all that kind of stuff really makes a difference. :)

I have psoriasis and CIU (2 diff auto immune diseases). You mentioned 2 types of “treatments” for psoriasis being prednisone (a steroid) and topical steroid creams. Yes, these are commonly used as a band aide to suppress the plaques however, prednisone long term is NOT a good treatment and anyone on this video that might have that disease and is looking for treatment should know that. I’m prescribed Methotrexate (7 of them in pill form 1x a week). There are a lot of other similar pills with different names that treat the psoriasis similarly. Look into those and do not stay dependent on steroids like prednisone that can have long term detrimental side effects to your body. Lastly, if you have CIU - Xolair injections are life changing. This is a “biologic” injection known as an immuno suppressant that suppresses the overactive production of eosinophils in the blood. Hope this helps anyone on this video looking for answers as i always was during the years of pain before my diagnosis.

I am starting a series of natural ways to help lots of things, including autoimmune, thanks for pointing this out to people, you are right, prednisone is definitely not something people want to be on long term, hopefully people have good doctors that know that :)
