What do we need to change?
@junkerzn731210 сағат бұрын
The main problem for automakers is that having a constantly-moving target as politicians try to wrench the rules back and forth is bad for business. With the transition happening whether they want it to or not, they would like a transition plan that allows them to remain competitive on the gasoline front as they move towards EVs. Right now, the only one with an even remotely stable plan that allows this is California and the states that pile onto California's bandwagon. Having a solid schedule is necessary because it costs a lot of money to transition to EVs and automakers cannot afford to lose their profitable ICE market share while they are spending that money. The ICE production of all vehicle makers has to drop in lock-step. If one automaker just decides to stay all-in on ICE, its a huge disadvantage to the others that are spending money on the transition and slowly reducing ICE production. Even though that ICE-only automaker will go out of business for sure in a few years anyway, it doesn't stop businesses from making bad decisions and taking their entire sector down with them. And this is why automakers are making independent deals with California. Because California's government is stable and can give them a solid schedule. Even if the schedule is a lot faster than the automakers would like, its still their best shot at survival. -Matt

The oil companies are hilarious, but it's not unexpected. They want people to be dependent on gasoline but it is far, far too late for a reduction in emissions requirements to have any effect on build cost or even attract more ICE buyers. With electric motors being so much better, ICE horse power is no longer a selling point. That fell away when supercars started losing races to Tesla's. Note that in-wheel electric motors have major problems due to rotational inertia. However, EPA has wrongly allowed them to share these regulations with other states, in violation of the provisions of the Clean Air Act (CAA). The planned actions would simply force CA, and EPA, to comply with the CAA as written.

The EU, as an exercise, has proven that incentives don't really achieve the goal they are designed for. Of course, the free money program is a vote buying expedition, but you knew that already. "I'm going to buy an EV because there is a $7,500 rebate." Sure enough the people take advantage of the rebates. The rebates however, are made from money and the money ends. Then the rebates stop and people "stop buying EV's." That actually isn't what happens. In Germany many took advantage of the incentive. It ended and "EV buyers" sat tight and waited for the incentive to start up again. Now politicians never ever jerk things around do they? One president buys some votes with "free EV money" and a new president buys some votes by giving the free money to someone else. Shocking isn't it? Politics aside, the automobile is a consumer product. Gas vehicle sales have been in decline globally since 2019. "The consumer" not the government, nor the environmentalists or car manufacturers has begun the process of adopting the "new technology" and every measure of automobile sales globally reflects this. There were 5 EV models for sale in the US just a few years past....there are 71 new EV models available at US dealerships today and as we see here on Autoline? New entrants arrive each month.

Constantly ratcheting up the mileage standards forces the car companies to keep changing their designs and materials, which costs a lot. Turbocharging and increasing plastic in cars make them less durable, and having to replace a car in 10 years instead of 20 is bad for the environment. EV's are well on their way to replacing ICE cars; you don't have to force the transition; the low maintenance, lower fuel costs, and wonderful quietness of EV's will have them win on merits. Did you file a report directly with NHTSA? I had similar issues in the early 2000s with the van version of the VW VR6 engine. I reported the problem to NHTSA and had other owners do the same. VW and Siemens, the OEM who made the defective parts, denied the issue until I proved them wrong with a video I and others submitted to NHTSA. This was the day after the OEM supplied a certified letter to NHTSA, saying they had addressed the issue, but the video proved them wrong. The dealerships across North America refused to report the problem. To correct the issue, VW replaced the defective part for the third time and reimbursed me and others over $2,400.

Under Biden, we spent trillions of dollars on garbage and funded military conflicts internationally as the world burns and inches closer to cataclysmic conflict. Central government control of the market always causes economic problems, and Trump is shifting that heavy handed grip away from the auto market and moving it to somewhere that government should operate, which is in things like national defense.

BEVs should not be subsidized. It is not the role of the government to artificially manipulate markets and pick winners or losers. If BEVs are as good as so many say they are, they shouldn't need subsidies. Diverting the funds to promote domestic battery production is a much wiser and more efficient move. Not only would it allow sales to other countries, thus helping the trade balance, it would also ensure a sufficient domestic supply both for public and military use. The latter is clearly a national security matter. The military is one area BEVs can be well suited to so ensuring a safe domestic battery supply is critical. BEVs can't yet meet most peoples' needs.
