@@mattyb1624 Its pretty much the same as a regular ute, the most frugal in the list was the V6 wildtrack, which was only 1.7l/100 better. If you combine the battery (starting at full) and the fuel, they would have a similar range (wildtrack has a bigger tank (85 vs 60), but no battery), but I think the wildtrack would still outrange it by 20-30km, but overall the cost for the trip would be about the same. Seems good, Its such a crying shame our governments don't seem to want to encourage this tech, PHEV is just far better than full electric for a truck, and most driving would not even be using fuel day to day so it really is almost as valid as an EV when it comes to not emitting carbon.
@mattyb1624
@mattyb1624 Ай бұрын
@Blight-fp3vt I'm not talking about range, I'm talking about L/100km. Almost all of the other utes did better. The cost for a long trip may be similar, except you're forgetting expensive public charging costs on top of the fuel costs, which you will need as the test shows it cannot charge enough using its own generator.

@Blight-fp3vt EVs may not have local emissions, which is great for the city... but they have 4x the production emissions of a normal car according to Volvo and VW, not to mention the power source to charge. They aren't green. If you want to be green, go buy a 2nd hand normal Ute because it already exists so the main production emissions have been and gone .

@@mattyb1624 EVs are about 20-30% greener than a regular ICE. If you want to go green its naturally best to use up everything which have already been produced, but once you run out of used cars EV`s are considerably better if "going green" is what you are after.

I've seen comments from Mexican owners, and they all say that the first mistake you make is using low charge minimum while driving long distance. Because if you need to do a section where you require long hills while towing, and you have sub 25% charge, it struggles. Keeping it at 50 seems to ensure you have enough juice to cater for those situations, then the regen will pull it back up while normal driving again.

When driving off road you aren't constantly going all out 100% of the time. You'll go through demanding sections and then go through easy sections . In this case where the required power exceeds the output power, setting the SOC to 75% would constitute a fair test. What should be seen is how far you can run at 100km/h in this case, and use this to compare with other vehicles. Instead of thinking, hey, I can't run 100km/h after I don't use the engine to consume the power to the bottom.

You must leave it in charge mode for towing. This is the same setup as the Mitsubishi Outlander phev. I tow all the time a 1 ton trailer and it's a 13kw battery and 140kw electric power. Leave it on battery charge mode and it uses the battery up hills. Also towed 1.5ton for 2000 kms around East Cape in New Zealand. Handled it amazingly well and no flat battery. I flew up the very steep Arthur's pass in the Southern Alps in NZ towing 1ton and a loaded SUV. The only car that could pass me was a Ford XR6. You must keep the battery well above 50% before hills and use it for getting up hills. Recharge on the way down and flats.

You may think that , but we do want to know how a hybrid will react when the battery gets low . And let's be clear , this was actually aside from being fully laden a very cushy test and in ideal conditions during the day time . 30 c is not even that hot . If it was night time you'd be using your high beams probably with the heater on , and it appears it's only a short test . It's hard to beat an ICE vehicle for a tow car , even my old xr6 falcon did Melbourne to Noosa and all around brizzy visiting relatives dragging a heavy old 70S caravan with the aero dynamics of cabover Kenworth that I rebuilt and made even heavier with fully boxed steel rails and an extended draw bar , dragging two extra large pensioners and masses of gear all up for 5000 k's , and it was peak summer often in the 40's sitting on 100 kph most of the way , the van tracked behind like it was on rails , rock steady and the combination did not miss a beat the whole way with a going and lights running for the whole trip with an electric fridge running in the van , we put a auxillary battery in the van vented to outside with the electrical wiring tweaked so when the cars lights where on it charged the battery in the van , as soon as the car was shutdown and lights turned off the auxiliary battery was disconnected from the car so no car flat battery. And the beauty of the Conventional ice vehicles is should things go pear shaped , they are easy to fix.@@zackmack4712

Our driving conditions are probably the equivalent of country driving in Aus. Current driver of a Ram 2500 (petrol Hemi) with +200k km of hard driving. Have owned a current gen Toyota Hilux, loved its fuel economy and simplicity, but not its on road manners (without load). It's pretty clear from the comments that a lot of people have no idea how this machine works. I would have been interested to know how far it is likely to be able to tow up a decent incline with a good starting state of charge. If I am towing with mine I will keep the minimum state of charge high so this doesn't happen. If I do come across a hill that is likely to reduce the battery too low I'll just slow down. Problem solved. It might take a bit of work getting the feel for it but I am looking forward to playing around with all the settings to get the best out of it.

Am I completely reading this test wrong? Have you just tested the vehicle with 3kn load at 100kmh WITHOUT allowing the ICE to keep the battery charged? You are correct in saying that this situation ‘could potentially happen’ …but so could your ICE engine failing if you drove everywhere in 1st gear!!! I dare you test it again, in HEV mode, with SOC on at say 50%….go on, how difficult would that be…

Ok…I can sorta appreciate a worst case scenario test but he then compares it to the Prado, running under normal conditions, and says that this is why a ‘normal’ ICE car is better. Where is the test of a normal ICE car under ‘worst case’ conditions? He actually stated in his ‘figures’ that a Hilux couldn’t even get to 100kmh! When you think about it..even worst case, it still pulled the load at 74kmh..that’s even after he tried to make the car fail.

This is exactly what he has done. Hmm 🤔 why’s that… Flatten the battery to 13% soc left & try towing with the max 130kw 1.5L ice alone is one thing but ☝️ To then use a Toyota Landcruiser 300(?) ice as a way to show it can keep doing laps with a much larger (diesel or petrol ice) whilst it has fuel ..does seem to be a strange comparison 🤔 And one that others take for “proof” of a massive failure or manufacturing fault & it shows poor quality. But all it is, is comparing a 1.5l 4cyl petrol engine to a larger petrol petrol engine. He should retract this & say that the Shark with a sufficiently charged battery & ice doing what it’s there for will do many laps with hardly any fuel usage compared to the Toyota having a limited range due to running out of fuel because that’s its only source of movement. Maybe put 10ltrs of fuel in both & the Byd shark has a sufficiently charged battery & see what goes further out of the two ??

I can't believe you've done all this extensive testing but missed a crucial component: will the ICE have trouble maintaining SOC level during long distance towing? To do this is super simple, just hookup the 2.5T trailer, set the SOC to 50%, set cruise control at 100km/h around the test track, and see how low the SOC level drops to. The trailer dyno test was simulating towing something UPHILL all the time, of course it will drain the battery and leave all the hard work to the ICE, but it is in no way an indicator of long range towing capability.

The test results reflect what I’ve experienced towing with an Outlander PHEV over the past 10 years. Great towing on relatively flat terrain but as soon as there is an incline over a long distance or multiple hills the system can’t maintain the battery charge so the engine screams trying to deliver enough power towing while trying to charge the battery. I’m towing 900kg with a 1500kg rated vehicle. The vehicle relies on the combined electric and petrol engine power to deliver the maximum power, as soon as the battery is drained it only has the power from the petrol engine.

Paul, I’ve been doing some reading on Tow Dynamometers similar to the one you used in an attempt to better understand your test and I’ve come to the conclusion that it was kinda pointless (sorry). I have learned that many of these Dyno Trailers can be programmed to simulate real world hills with prerecorded GPS gradient data so that an actual climb can be replicated on the flat test track. Can your unit do this? If it can then I would like you to consider rather than testing ‘all’ vehicles with the same settings on the Dyno Trailer and just performing stress tests that aren’t really relatable to most of us, why not program the Dyno Trailer with something like the hill climb on Thunderbolts Way between Gloucester & Walcha or some other pretty challenging hill people will be familiar with and have thought twice about attempting and use settings that reflect the GCM ratings for the vehicle being tested and the speeds you’re actually likely to be doing instead of the one-size-fits-all 100kph test you’re currently using. Because…..from what I can tell you essentially tested the Shark using criteria designed to stress vehicles with 45% more towing capacity and presented the results as directly comparable and I’m pretty sure every other ute on the market would perform equally as poorly (if they could even do it) if you test them at 45% above capacity. So as entertaining as it may have been it doesn’t seem fair (to me anyway) on either BYD or your viewers trying to understand this new vehicle before possibly shelling out their $60K+ and hoping for the best. What say you?

I wouldn't say this is a terrible result but its utility is reduced for certain applications. Paul, I appreciate that you had a go at this, but I think you should do it all over again. This time when testing with the trailer dyne use a more representative drag consistent with towing a 2500kg trailer, and try some different options of battery SOC to find its best towing performance, just like an owner would do. It is worth noting that 3000N is clearly too high for a fuel consumption test, even for the 3500 kg diesel utes because there is no way that would represent the average towing scenario. That is more like worst case up a steep hill which would represent less than 5% of towing, and even then there is a downhill to follow that would recoup some of the economy. That trailer dyne test you performed on the group ute test was in my opinion completely flawed, favouring the most powerful utes, but then to follow up and perform the same 3000N test on a 2500kg towing limit ute was simply unfair.
@MotoGuzziMoto
@MotoGuzziMoto Ай бұрын

@@MotoGuzziMoto Agreed. Load the Ute close to the max limits and set the Dyno trailer at a figure that represents a 2.5T trailer going up a grade not exceeding the 12% grade limit for the vehicle and see how it goes. Then repeat the test varying the load in such a way as to simulate real world conditions because inclines are variable and I’ve never towed my van up a continuous 12% grade that would allow anything close to 100kph for more than a brief period and even then, why would I. Doing so absolutely kills your fuel economy. Considering drag is a huge factor above 80kph is it not reasonable and sensible to look after your equipment and perhaps just slow down a tad to save power. Just because you ‘can’ climb at that speed doesn’t mean that you ‘should’. So the test was entertaining but essentially useless to all of us that would actually like to know what it CAN do as well as what it CAN’T do.

@@RodneyW I haven't seen anyone do a fuel test whilst towing so that's going to be something that hopefully one of the reviewers does soon. When not towing, in hybrid mode it gets 7.5l/100km's to 8.5l/100km's.

Once the battery is low/flat you only have what the engine can make as power which is great until you need more than that. That means any time you ask for more than (in this video) 100kW or so you're depleting the battery. That doesn't need to be a heavy trailer if its a large one with poor aero's. To hold 100k's you're going to use more than 100kW on the flat and level even with something like a decent boat trailer on the back or if there's a headwind and things in the bed or whatever - its not a high bar is the point. The more over 100kW you use the faster it depletes and the less it can put back in so far from the outer limit case Paul thinks this is, for long journeys running heavy or with a lot of drag, in the rain, in the cold or whatever - this is going to happen quite regularly. When it boils down to it this has a claimed 170kW engine minus losses which aren't small in a series hybrid so by the time it gets to the wheels you're looking at a constant maximum of around 100kW. Anything over that and you're relying on it having charge to keep it going and while 30kWh is great for running around town its almost nothing when you're talking about dragging a big ute and trailer against the weather - even using 190kW total - something easily done in heavy use - it will take that battery from completely full to completely flat in 20 mins. Thats presuming the whole 30kWh is usable but looking at how it behaved in this test that seems highly unlikely. The bowl test showed it all - the LC would go around all day until the fuel ran out then top up and go again. This didn't even manage two laps which in the real world is taking you pretty much nowhere. Pauls test showed this in a short time but on a longer run where you're using more than the engine can charge regularly this will happen repeatedly.

You have absolutely no idea. You are never going to have a 2.5t trailer needing more than 100kW to tow. Remember a lot of utes could not even get this to 100kmph. Even my slow as f Cannon can tow 3t at 100kmph with ease. A trailer dyno is not even the remotely the same as a trailer.
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 Ай бұрын
@@aljoubert8749 Again for those who can't get their head around it - this isn't simulating weight but rather load. You may be able to tow 3t at 100kmph on the flat but that means nothing if its a small or decently aerodynamic rig. Heck a ~200kW semi can haul 40T+ at 100 on the flat depending on prevailing conditions. This is simulating work required to overcome a load (not a load as in weight but a load as in a loading from all the forces involved) which in this case is perceived as a set weight and a set gradient. They are variable for the same load so you can have a very light but large trailer into a headwind, a light trailer up a steep hill, a heavy trailer up a slight hill or any mix of them to get to the same resistance. Say you take your 3t trailer up a 10% grade - that would mean the dyno trailer could be set to an equivalent drag to provide similar resistance. As for a 2.5T trailer never needing more than 100kW to tow - on this ute thats over 5000kg train weight and you imagine its going to do that into a headwind, up a hill with 100kW? Lets see the video of you trying (and failing miserably) at that. Physics simply disagrees with you.

BYD has done well with this car but I still believe it need’s a few things like rear and center diff locks, they have done that with the leopard 5 which has the same setup as this. When towing I’d have the engine full on so it is able to charge the batteries and also aid in power though I also believe at full towing weight the engine will struggle to do both, I’d say it’s a bit too small or underpowered for high demanding situations. But perfect car for 90% of the people who will buy and never tow or do serious off-roading.

Once again inaccurate testing from you... Why on earth would you think running the battery down to its minimum operating capacity would be a good idea before conducting test's with actual data. You drove it around pointlessy with a trailer on the back first, collecting zero scientific data. All 3 of these videos it seems you have purposely put the shark in a position to give it's worst possible results. 3 times starts to make you question how much is ford or Tesla paying you... The idea of it being hybrid is that the battery should never get to 25% when the ute is being worked, you would set the minimum to 50% to 60% so there's plenty of juice left to power the all wheel drive capability when it actually needs it. I'm glad to see other people now starting to call you out on the clear bias of these video's. From putting the car into the obviously wrong drive mode whilst testing, to depleting the battery or overheating it before testing, to not being extremely clear that this is a pre production unit, you've done everything possible to give it an unfair review.

I don't believe it would seek to manage the battery around 100%, so would not see this scenario aside from when you initially set off, it would more likely manage it to around a 70% SOC.

Theoretically, I wonder how many kN needs to be applied to the load testing trailer, in order to represent the maximum towing climbing grade that BYD has set? Is the trailer's 3kN load under the 12% figure mentioned in the BYD specification notes?

As one who has the order in and "will" purchase mine, it is showing it's limits. I know straight away of one scenario where the vehicle will be in trouble pulling a trailer of 2.5T. Oxley Highway...Port Macquarie up the Walcha mountain. This is the major interlink from the coast to the Western area like Tamworth/Armidale/Inverell/etc. And I don't think that this is a software issue. So, yes...long inclines with 2.5T towing will be an issue for the owners that are inclined to do this.

1. The prado kakadu is 2.8L right? So if we use another 1.5L ICE car in the same condition, can it running at 100km/h or lower? 2. Shark can't constantly run 100km/h in this conditon. But if we start the test with 70% SOC, how long will Shark run before it cann't keep the 100km/h speed and what is the SOC then? I think that's a more meaningful test. Thanks

Last year I towed my caravan with the BT50 from Far North Queensland to Tasmania and back. MY diesel BT50 did not miss a beat. Cradle mountain wad lots of real steep hairpin turns. 1st and second gear trying to keep the 3.2 Lt engine in the rev range to give it maximum torque. The only thing I had to worry about was the fuel gauge. Towing I can get about 500 kms. Throw my 2x Jerries in and I am up to about 700 kms easily. From what I have seen here, this thing is simply not up to the task. Get on a large mountain range, exhaust your battery to 25% and you are up shit creek from what I can see. If any of you people are rushing out to buy one of these things for towing a van or intend to go offroad, you are going to be very disappointed. I can see them being good in certain scenarios but for what I do and many other Aussies, they are not up to the task. People these days seem to think having apple carplay and a big fancy screen on the dash is more important than what the engine/electric motors is capable of. For me, this is a soccer Mum's car with a tub in the back. GAF!!!!!!!!!!! Still yet to see a youtube clip showing real world scenarios. Tell BYD to lend me one. I will hook the camper trailer up and see if I can make it to the tip of Cape York via the PDR. Maybe a Fraser Island trip. Good luck on Fraser (K'Gari) without Low Range. I wish the fish bit as hard as all you Chinese Fan Boys that have never been out of the city.🤣😜🤪

Possibly the best review on the BYD Shark yet … potential purchasers need to know how the system works, both positive and negative so they can make an informed decision. It’s also a great safety announcement so potential buyers understand what’s going on, if under the right circumstances they are at low battery and loaded going up a long steep incline, there is the potential to lose power, or they may have done a couple of overtaking manoeuvres, got mentally use to the time taken, then on another occasion they go to overtake and they lose power.

Also interesting to understand what percent of ute owners tow. Not every car is for every person. People making out this will fail at being an excavator hauling, long range mountain climbing, enduro truck. Woah no way, who would have thought. But for an urban or suburban setting, where you want to take a small boat down to the ramp or do some light camping (once a year), but you are otherwise commuting and doing Bunnings trips - hey looking good. At 58k? Hmm seems great and now it's also competing against other large SUV family vehicles.
