I live in China and the first few times I saw this thing last year I was very impressed. It is very cool looking in person and for only $11,000 it is such a great deal. The US auto makers better wake up quick because this vehicle and others like it are going to destroy them if they don't.

There's no way they can compete with the cost base they have, especially after the record UAW contracts that will have an average worker making 6 figures by the end of the contract. So they'll give up entry and mid size cars and be forced to compete in the luxury and truck market. I'm sure they'll hang on to the truck market for a little while, but it'll be hard for more and more people to resist something that costs 1/3 of what they would otherwise pay.

I will reiterate, Chinese pricing is not comparable. GM Renault and other Chinese companies have cheaper EVs. Renault's budget EV sells under the Dacia brand in France for €20k, but the Chinese price is $8800, much cheaper than this BYD. GMs Wuling venture had the comparable Bingo, which also doubles in price when exported. The same thing happens to BYD models. The slightly bigger Dolphin jumps from $14k in China to $28k in Europe, and at that price is not much cheaper than a much bigger made in Mexico Chevy Equinox EV. For other OEMs, this car is already "been there done that".

Americans don't want cheap tiny cars. We already have/had them. They don't sell. Americans want big SUVs with all the blings. This is not my personal approval or disapproval. It's just a fact. Cars are very much a status symbol in this country. That's the culture. I can see cars like this being opular abroad though, where the culture's different.

I have a BYD Atto 3 Extended range, for 9 months now. It is the best car I have owned. The attention to detail, safe LFP Blade Battery, stylish and comfortable interior, and 5 Star ANCAP (European) rating were deal breakers for me. Also being able to open the door and just sit down, instead of climbing down into, or up into is also just right for me. Convenient OTA updates, 12.5" rotatable centre display Android tablet, and another driver display above the steering wheel (which adjusts with steering height). It is a great EV, very well made and a comfortable ride. Great value for the price. Cheers from Australia.

The automobile industry is a national industry. Of course, it is related to politics and has an impact on the country. That is why countries with developed automobile industries either do not import cars from China or impose tariffs on them because of the impact they will have on their countries. From the point of view of the general consumer, they are cheap. Even if it is good, balance is important in the existing car market. If low-priced cars from China do not come in, that will be the reason I mentioned.

Cars in Costa Rica are not cheap. I am Chinese and have bought cars in Costa Rica. The price is nearly twice that of China. The tariffs here are not low. In fact, Costa Rica is the most suitable country for electric vehicles. The land area is not large. It is only 250 kilometers from Limon to Puntarenas, and the range of electric vehicles can be easily reached. Costa Rica has sufficient sunlight and sufficient wind energy, and has an excellent green energy environment. The disadvantage is that the government's ability to plan for the future is too weak.Although there is no shortage of electricity here, there is a lack of charging stations.

This car is amazing. I do expect BYD and some other Chinese companies to start putting severe pressure on Toyota and Volkswagen, and maybe Hyundai and Kia, by taking many developing markets away from them. On the other end of the spectrum, I would love to see Caresoft and Autoline do a little review of the Li Auto Mega. It's a new MPV with so much content, it is off the charts. It has about 550 HP, is quieter than a Maybach S series, urban self driving ability that seems to work, has full Dolby Vision immersive cinema in the rear seats, air ride, and just about every bell and whistle you could possibly name. And the biggest trick of all: It has huge range , and can charge from 10% to 80% in under 11 minutes! And I'm not just reading off the press release. I'm gobsmacked because I just saw Inside China Auto (a British KZbinr in China) do a hands on review and demonstration. I recommend that video very highly. It's a wake up call.

Looks like a baby Lamborghini. That's smart of BYD. Lead designer is Wolfgang Egger who formerly designed for Lamborghini, Alfa and Audi. With 74 hp and $11,500 and you can still have some style. The splitter shows he has a sense of humor. My 69 VW Beetle only had 57 hp and was the same size. It took me everywhere and hauled everything with a folding rear seat. My generation was fortunate that the USA wasn't protectionist back then. I would love one of these, but I doubt they will be allowed to enter the USA. Politicians will tell you the cars are spying, but they willingly carry a Chinese made phone. Reverse engineering, like it's some UFO, isn't going to help our manufacturers produce anything equal anywhere near the same price unless they build it in Mexico. If American corporations keep doing that Mexico may soon have to build the wall to keep Americans from taking their jobs. Just kidding. 100% automation and no jobs is the ultimate goal and coming soon. Tesla calls it the machine that builds the machine, and every manufacturer wants it for every kind of product.

It is cheap so people earning below average can have a NEW car. No wonder most Chinese love communist party and are willingly giving up their freedom and democracy for the convenience of living. Most Chinese have house/apartment and car even their average GDP is only 1/5 of Americans.

What a pity Americans will never get the opportunity to own a BYD EV unless they open a manufacturing plant in Mexico, perhaps then, BYD passenger vehicles can be sold in the USA so Americans have more choice. Byd build incredible quality Evs, I own a BYD Atto 3 extended range and I'm waiting to take delivery soon of my BYD Seal Performance AWD model sedan. I guess with no vehicle manufacturers in Australia anymore, we dont have an industry to protect, so this allows greater choice and pricing for consumers. As soon as I was aware Warren Buffett invested in BYD several years ago, I knew BYD made quality vehicles at a very competitive price and are going to be a major player on the global stage

So many parallels here to the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV I've been driving for the past 8 years, which will hopefully last me long enough until small, unpretentious Chinese EVs like this one will be generally available here. Thank you for spotlighting this, Autoline and Caresoft. The only thing I wished we could have seen was the amount of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. Do they fold completely flat, like in the i-MiEV, or the Honda FIT that's also in our driveway? But I'm glad we got to see the rear spoiler with nearly horizontal rear window underneath. The Audi A2 did something similar here: another car that didn't need a rear wiper because of thoughtful aerodynamics. In addition to saving manufacturing costs on no wiper, there isn't a need for a rear view camera. KISS stuff still works. The Japanese have seemed to completely given up on making cars like this for the US market, even though they were really good at it. The Europeans could do it, but didn't want to be pigeonholed into being known for coming off as less than luxurious while still being perceived as too small. The US auto makers? Proverbial tail fins, land yachts and pickups, mostly. The Bolt EV, to be fair, hints at this sort of urban utility, but is still medium sized car that their marketing people only want to make larger (ie: EUV, Equinox EV, etc.) This one will be more than $11.5K when it finally hits here, but probably not by that much. If BYD can find a way to make them in Mexico to NHTSA crash specs and sell them to Yankees for around $18K a pop, millions of these will be on the roads here. I hope they pull it off. We need affordable EVs like this for the masses and for being able to fit into tight spots in big cities.

The only minus on the BYD Seagull is interior/cargo room. Not too much room behind the rear seat, and the rear seat cannot be split folded. The similarly priced Wuling Bingo EV, the Seagull's main competitor, does much better in this area, and its cargo space is almost twice as big as the Seagull. However the Seagull still sells better because its platform, drivetrain, battery etc are more advanced compared to the Wuling. Wuling is very good at building cheap cars, but no one is even close to BYD's vertical integration and ability to control costs. These cheap Chinese EVs are going to be a serious problem for all major global carmakers very shortly.

Rear cargo room is small, but if I want cargo, then no 4 people, most of the time it's just 1 or 2 people and cargo space. Or if one's really in a pinch, put some cargo in the rear seats between the passengers. I can't wait until these are available in the U.S. Or at least other automakers learning from BYD and offering something similar.

All of the KZbinrs for electric cars keep overlooking that fact that the vast majority of American citizens who need a vehicle to do everyday things like going to work at their minimum wage jobs will be forced to keep buying gas cars. BYD is right, the US is against EVs just look how they treat TESLA. If the US really cared about the environment and its peoples health they would make it EVs and Solar more available for the masses (low income citizens). The systems in more than 48 states are set up to abuse it citizens by not only allowing low price EVs to be available for the citizens and they allow the insurance companies to overcharge low income citizen that want a safe and clean vehicle to have to purchase said insurance. So BYD even if allowed would truly have to sell their vehicle at their Chinese prices in order for the average citizen to be able to purchase their vehicle with full coverage insurance. Why can't Detroit build a BYD Seagull and price it for no more than $12,000, Detroit isn't selling anything anyone wants to buy.

Ford's "Rouge" plant. In Dearborn. But yeah, the Big 3 used to be very vertically integrated as well, and that of course has many benefits. But when the imports came, they could not compete, with their 1.5 million well paid UAW workers. So they began the outsourcing to suppliers which paid their workers a lot less. But they're already down to basically final assembly now, so I don't see how much more they can cut. It seems they were trying to keep battery manufacturing out of the UAW but that appears to have been one of the concessions during the recent strike.

Oh and BYD also launched about 5 more models in between the Seagull and U8, and has even more products in the pipeline, including a supercar and an electric pickup. At that price I would totally buy one. Inexpensive makes it the perfect low risk first EV to buy. Especially while EVs are still evolving and depreciating rapidly. Couple inexpensive cars like this and GDPR like personal data privacy legislation like they have in the EU and all of a sudden going 100% EV for new cars in 2030 becomes viable.

BYD is the best in making EVs from entry level to super expensive luxury ones. I would buy one of these entry level EVs in a heartbeat for commute to work, shopping etc with short to medium range driving. It would be perfect for daily drive and charging over night at home. It would save a lot in terms of electricity than gas. I truly wish we can buy one here❤

I mean this in the best possible way, but it's great having a couple of old dudes doing the video. You're going to ask the right questions and not buy into any bull-dust. Personally, I hope there's a BYD subsidiary that will use this as a shared platform and make something that _is_ cheap and nasty, and _does_ have lots of hard nasty grey plastics, and does have rear drums, and boring headlights made by the cheapest bidder. If they could knock another grand or two off the price off BYD's design by making a car that is more brutally utilitarian , that would be cool for the absolute bottom end of the market (as long as the original BYD Seagull stays nice like the way it is!).

Totally agree about IIHS pushing people out of small cars. Every single one of their videos about small cars over the last couple of decades ends with "but here are bigger hybrid alternatives that don't sacrifice safety like *insert name of gas only subcompact*" even though the small car scored really well. My small car's lower mass and hence, shorter braking distance, has prevented several accidents. Funny thing is this "second car" of ours gets used way more often than our "first car". The first one just gets fired up for long trips.
