There's no way they can compete with the cost base they have, especially after the record UAW contracts that will have an average worker making 6 figures by the end of the contract. So they'll give up entry and mid size cars and be forced to compete in the luxury and truck market. I'm sure they'll hang on to the truck market for a little while, but it'll be hard for more and more people to resist something that costs 1/3 of what they would otherwise pay.

I will reiterate, Chinese pricing is not comparable. GM Renault and other Chinese companies have cheaper EVs. Renault's budget EV sells under the Dacia brand in France for €20k, but the Chinese price is $8800, much cheaper than this BYD. GMs Wuling venture had the comparable Bingo, which also doubles in price when exported. The same thing happens to BYD models. The slightly bigger Dolphin jumps from $14k in China to $28k in Europe, and at that price is not much cheaper than a much bigger made in Mexico Chevy Equinox EV. For other OEMs, this car is already "been there done that".

Also being able to open the door and just sit down, instead of climbing down into, or up into is also just right for me. So many parallels here to the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV I've been driving for the past 8 years, which will hopefully last me long enough until small, unpretentious Chinese EVs like this one will be generally available here. Thank you for spotlighting this, Autoline and Caresoft. The only thing I wished we could have seen was the amount of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. Do they fold completely flat, like in the i-MiEV, or the Honda FIT that's also in our driveway? But I'm glad we got to see the rear spoiler with nearly horizontal rear window underneath. The Audi A2 did something similar here: another car that didn't need a rear wiper because of thoughtful aerodynamics. In addition to saving manufacturing costs on no wiper, there isn't a need for a rear view camera. KISS stuff still works. The Japanese have seemed to completely given up on making cars like this for the US market, even though they were really good at it. The Europeans could do it, but didn't want to be pigeonholed into being known for coming off as less than luxurious while still being perceived as too small. The US auto makers? Proverbial tail fins, land yachts and pickups, mostly. The Bolt EV, to be fair, hints at this sort of urban utility, but is still medium sized car that their marketing people only want to make larger (ie: EUV, Equinox EV, etc.) This one will be more than $11.5K when it finally hits here, but probably not by that much. If BYD can find a way to make them in Mexico to NHTSA crash specs and sell them to Yankees for around $18K a pop, millions of these will be on the roads here. I hope they pull it off. We need affordable EVs like this for the masses and for being able to fit into tight spots in big cities.
@tren1338 ай бұрын
The only minus on the BYD Seagull is interior/cargo room. Not too much room behind the rear seat, and the rear seat cannot be split folded. The similarly priced Wuling Bingo EV, the Seagull's main competitor, does much better in this area, and its cargo space is almost twice as big as the Seagull. However the Seagull still sells better because its platform, drivetrain, battery etc are more advanced compared to the Wuling. Wuling is very good at building cheap cars, but no one is even close to BYD's vertical integration and ability to control costs. These cheap Chinese EVs are going to be a serious problem for all major global carmakers very shortly.
@jayziac8 ай бұрын
Rear cargo room is small, but if I want cargo, then no 4 people, most of the time it's just 1 or 2 people and cargo space. Or if one's really in a pinch, put some cargo in the rear seats between the passengers. I can't wait until these are available in the U.S. Or at least other automakers learning from BYD and offering something similar.

All of the KZbinrs for electric cars keep overlooking that fact that the vast majority of American citizens who need a vehicle to do everyday things like going to work at their minimum wage jobs will be forced to keep buying gas cars. BYD is right, the US is against EVs just look how they treat TESLA. If the US really cared about the environment and its peoples health they would make it EVs and Solar more available for the masses (low income citizens). The systems in more than 48 states are set up to abuse it citizens by not only allowing low price EVs to be available for the citizens and they allow the insurance companies to overcharge low income citizen that want a safe and clean vehicle to have to purchase said insurance. So BYD even if allowed would truly have to sell their vehicle at their Chinese prices in order for the average citizen to be able to purchase their vehicle with full coverage insurance. Why can't Detroit build a BYD Seagull and price it for no more than $12,000, Detroit isn't selling anything anyone wants to buy.

Ford's "Rouge" plant. In Dearborn. But yeah, the Big 3 used to be very vertically integrated as well, and that of course has many benefits. But when the imports came, they could not compete, with their 1.5 million well paid UAW workers. So they began the outsourcing to suppliers which paid their workers a lot less. But they're already down to basically final assembly now, so I don't see how much more they can cut. It seems they were trying to keep battery manufacturing out of the UAW but that appears to have been one of the concessions during the recent strike.

Oh and BYD also launched about 5 more models in between the Seagull and U8, and has even more products in the pipeline, including a supercar and an electric pickup. Here in México is being sold for $20,588 USD as an introductory offer for the entrance level model (4 airbags)

A lot of attention to detail. The interior impresses. The leather steering wheel and seats are nicer that some cars I've seen selling > $40k. How can there be profit in this EV? I thought my 2022 Bolt EV was a good buy which I love.

The special tire, and its small size, is likely for better range. Look like they're pretty narrow too like on the BMW i3.

Looks like the ideal inexpensive 2nd car for a household, but the IIHS has been on a mission to scare people away from small cars for decades. Look at how they treated the Smart ForTwo.
@DeLorean48 ай бұрын
Totally agree about IIHS pushing people out of small cars. Every single one of their videos about small cars over the last couple of decades ends with "but here are bigger hybrid alternatives that don't sacrifice safety like *insert name of gas only subcompact*" even though the small car scored really well. My small car's lower mass and hence, shorter braking distance, has prevented several accidents. Funny thing is this "second car" of ours gets used way more often than our "first car". The first one just gets fired up for long trips.

Also, remember, Americans are large... driving while rubbing is not appealing

When people have no money anymore these cars are going to be the only game in town. China has come a long way from those trucks that folded up like an accordion when it hit something. They've learned from the best and it shows. The west would be absolutely pants on head stupid to ignore this. This is a MAJOR threat and it looks like China is going to mop the floor with domestic auto makers if this is any indicator.

One has to wonder, what are links between IIHS and automakers, who clearly prefer to sell high margin SUVs and pickups?
@Cakebattered8 ай бұрын
The IIHS speaks on behalf of the insurance industry and they believe pushing drivers into an arms race (Bigger and larger vehicles) most benefits insurance companies.

Can you imagine if Ford put something like this out instead of the Lightning? Something people could actually afford? This should be a canary in the coalmine moment for the Detroit 3. I live in Michigan and I am terrified that there's going to be nothing left of them in 15 years and it's going to turn Michigan as a state into Flint. Between their products/pricing and the corrupt stealership model, I think their days are numbered and they just don't realize it.
