@@larryc1616 Import fees. Countries impose high import fees on Chinese cars, especially the West. Mostly this is because there's great suspicion regarding China subsidizing and forcing the market to be cheap, in capitalism this is called unfair competition and it breaks the system. It's not like it's the first time, China in the past suddenly FLODDED western markets with cheap steel, this led to many Western companies going bankrupt. It's doing the same now with solar panels and cars. Now you think "omg that's amazing! Better for us consumers in the West!" It's not that simple, mostly in the short term. Relying only on China because it's cheap for the West will lead to trade imbalances, job loss, and economic dependence (issues with security of the products and things like not being possible to enforce working conditions or quality standards etc). The solution is: tax them until prices are similar to western manufactures, which leads to consumers continuing to have choice of product (important for capitalism) because now you can buy a western one or a Chinese one for a similar price, and if you prefer the Chinese one, it will only boost tax revenue of the government which will benefit you and me. Note that states don't ban Chinese products (except the US, but the US is always special) they just want to prevent economic damage from these "flood products" exactly what China wants to happen. China is not doing it out of the goodness of their heart, ask all the African countries that are heavily indebted to China because of their goodness.

One of the reasons it is priced so low is because all the tooling and research and development costs are paid by the government. In the US, the cost of developing the factories and tooling are adding to the cost. You can't just slap a motor and battery in a gas car and turn it into an EV.

The BYD Seagull (or Dolphin Mini as it's called here) was the best selling EV here in Brazil for the month of March (it was released on the last days of February, so March was the first month it was effectively on sale). Second in the best selling EVs list was its big brother, the BYD Dolphin. BYD is already outselling Ford here in Brazil. And I don't mean just Ford EVs, but all Ford cars, including its internal combustion cars. This is what American politicians should be aware of. If US carmakers can't get their EVs to compete with the Chinese ones in both price and quality there's a good chance Chinese EVs will kill US car exports, not to mention China - which has the largest car market in the world, roughly twice as large as the US car market - might retaliate by closing its market to US-made vehicles or even prevent US carmakers from operating factories in China. Protectionism for the US auto industry, thus, could very well end weakening that industry in the medium to long term.
@larryevans67396 ай бұрын
Looking at the BYD King (aka Chazor) PHEV, I think it could sell very well in Brazil and potentially become the best selling sedan in the country if priced right (it is only slightly more expensive than the Seagull in China). But here is what I'm thinking about regarding Brazil: BYD is moving very fast. They are replacing platforms every 3-4 years, whereas a typical automaker takes multiple times as long. Not just styling refreshes, which they do regularly, but new platforms. For example, the Song Plus/Seal U EV (launced in 2021 in China) is scheduled to be replaced with a new generation on the new EV 4.0 platform in China in August, a matter of months after being launched in some global markets. That does not give them much time to recouperate the investment... So, could BYD potentially be planning to ship all the current generation platform tooling to countries like Brazil, to update and manufacture for local markets? Other automakers have done similar in the past. This would let BYD take costs down even further. And, given their rate of updates, their cars would still be more advanced than most competitors.
@FabioCapela6 ай бұрын
@@larryevans6739 I'm not sure reusing old tooling to make the previous platform in Brazil (or any other of their factories) would be beneficial to BYD. The new platform isn't just about improving the technical characteristics, it also costs less to manufacture. EVs are still at the point where design and manufactures techniques are evolving crazily fast, bringing manufacturing costs down for those that can stay at the cutting edge. Anyone not on the cutting edge of manufacture is stuck with higher production costs, meaning they will likely have to sacrifice margins just to not be priced out of the market.

(several vids there I'm sure) - How developing countries might do off-grid charging (yeah not sure this has been done, but it seems possible with Lightning-style bi-directional charging plus solar panels and a stationary battery...)

The USA needs the inexpensive (not cheap) Chinese EVs. With the average price of new vehicles being over $40,000, many Americans can not afford to buy new vehicles. Good used vehicles (certified) are not anything cheaper. These $10,000 to $20,000 Chinese EVs from BYD would give poorer population and young people with good decent reliabe transportation. Unfortunately the US government is preventing it.

The premium; EV chips, EV mobility, EV battery, EV charging, Vehicle-to-Grid, AV mobility, gigafactory, and international power grid domains are up for acquisition at the "EV Domain Store". Important for China in creating the global ecosystem of electrification. "Land, Sea, Air, and Space".

People need to understand that there is no way in hell that this car would ever be allowed to be sold in The US, UK, or anywhere in the vast majority of the west for 10k. It's 10k in China because of many reasons, possibly the main one being wages. Workers on car production lines in China are paid a quarter of those in the likes of the US and the UK the materials and everything that goes into the car are significantly cheaper and they don't have half as many hoops to jump through for various regulations and stuff. If this ever comes to the west you can expect a minimum price of 25k but I'd guess between 30 and 35k. A line worker here gets paid roughly 50k a year at BMW, in China that same worker gets paid around 12k so they can buy this car with their yearly wages and you can buy a BMW or an Audi or a Tesla with yours. The average house price in China is a 3rd of the price of a house in the UK so they're even worse off with that. Essentially if you're willing to take a pay cut down to 25% of your current salary then perhaps you can have it for 10k.

I would but the US won't allow citizens to buy it because our own industries are outdated and not competitive. Instead, they want ban computers because they want to protect their typewriter companies.

Not bad, honestly better than I thought and great for the price. But about $4000 more an used 2020 Chevy Bolt gives you over twice the horsepower and a bigger battery. Still, as a temporary vehicle you could do worse for sure

BYD Seagull seems to be the next VW Beetle in terms of how it is poised to takeover worldwide. Definitely the EV lots of people have been waiting for. Just a simple electric car with no frills and excessive extra garbage that just drives up the price.

The key for USA Adoption is finding a out the door price at 18K, because at 18K The 2022 Chevy Bolt's with miles under 40K will become commonplace beginning at the end of 2025 and start of 2026 at that same 18K for the majority of people who can take advantage of the 4K used EV Federal Tax credit program. If they attempt to go beyond 20K, much less adoption, but of course if the oil/energy supply is being very disrupted in the next 2 years from war and a paradigm shift in alliances, who know's , my hunch is that the average price of gasoline could increase overnight another .75 cents to 2.00 in the USA during this time period, and EV demand might skyrocket, but open trade alliances between country's is on the verge of falling apart.
@kelviskelvis71406 ай бұрын
Missed opportunity to point out that in the US this will have no parts supply and no servicing support. The cost for marketing support and after sales support will drive the cost up. Chinese government issues is a problem too. At this point any BYD purchase would be a gamble in the US and not worth it until things change with BYD solving their problems in the US market.
@koeber996 ай бұрын
At $10k price point, repairs may not make sense. It would be easier to just give you a new car. If they're selling to you for 10k, then it cost 8K to make?
@DR-nj5im5 ай бұрын
10k?! In a minute I'd buy it for 12.5k *IF* 1. It doesn't come with notoriously bad Chinese instructions. 2. It comes with a real warranty and robust support (readily available parts and people who can fix what breaks). 3. It has a range of at least 200 miles. 4. It comes all set up for at-home charging. "Commie car" or not, I think it'll sell great in the US. But, it's a niche vehicle, an "around town" car for errands and commuting. It can't do anything else, like hauling, towing or any type of offroad driving. Plus it's probably not good in the snow and it's definitely not a "luxury" vehicle. I don't think this car will have much of an effect on the current market since an SUV and/or a truck is considered a necessity in the US. No doubt though, GM will one day rebadge these with some Americanized touches and add 3 or 4k to the price. If they keep it @ 14k (max), it's bound to be a huge hit. (The guy in the video suggested upwards of 20k if sold in the US. Definately would not buy one at that price).
@mattalley43305 ай бұрын
I hear this little car has the big western EV makers scared. Good. That industry needs a good shakeup. Start importing these to the US and a couple years after I may buy a used one if safety and durability prove to be good. It wasn’t too long ago that you could buy a decent used vehicle in the 5-10k range and it would be nice to be able to do so again

74 HP will not be enough for highways. So, this car seems to be good for local drive but not highway drive. Is this car safe? Certainly, this is a wake up call for EV makers to lower their EV prices.
@peteralmazan70345 ай бұрын
I’m still driving my 1971 VW which only has 55 HP, I have taken it out on long drives across state lines, no issues at all. So a 74 HP car will have ample enough power..

74HP will be plenty for a tiny torquey electric car. Most cars have way more power than they actually need.
