About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZbin videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Love seeing all those bolts instead of screws for the hinges. They will be there for the life of the coop and won't come out. Although not entirely necessary, I would like to see the excess length of the bolts cut off flush with the nuts, just to be neat and nice and safe for the birds. Overall, a good job and a great idea, Jason!

Next progect: a whole chicken run that moves itself ,has internal GPS programming on were to go, and you put in all the feed at once and it portions it out daily, and a water hose attached, and it also has cameras with predator recognition and health analysis, and it send your phone alerts on about what's going on

David Marshall I’m guessing he still goes out and checks on them. I know when I had a small coop and run below my second floor bedroom window, it got old going out on their schedule. I attached a string to the door mechanism so that when they started in I could just reach over and yank it to let them out. I still went out to check on them shortly but on my schedule and not theirs. :-)

You can DIY this setup using a simple car window motor and a car window switch and a couple car door openers to push the window buttons as the brute force method. simple electronics to do it a bit more complicated for DIY unless you know how to solder and a circuit diagram. also btw, predators can try to pull it open, it is much harder for animals to push up, so a door that slides up to open in rails is more secure, so you can do that as a smaller door inside your 'man door'.

Might want to add some diagonal cross support in each door so they don't sage on the far side down the way. And I'm sure you did it but I would nip off those bolts so no one gets scratched by them or they hang up on something.

Hi Jason, a great build. I'm 276 viewers behind but I hope someone suggested that you take a sawzall/hacksaw and cut those bolts shorter, preventing injuries to family and birds or snagging summer dresses and aprons. How did you secure the top door and are you planning to attaching bolt locks so that the door can swing as one? It looks like this was one project that got you truly excited. Made me smile too, thanks!

All I can say is it’s a substitute for you not being there exactly when it needs to be opened and closed. However, I’ve had chickens get caught in our automatic door several times, some lightly injured. Just make sure you go down and check and don’t substitute the door for making sure they’re all In. I’ve also had chickens get left out after sunset and were sitting outside the door waiting on me when I got there. All that said, though… Good job!😁👍

Arnold Romppai I find raccoons and possums near my coop well before 40 mins after sunset...so I can’t leave it open for that long after sunset. Ever. Ever found a possum in your coop at sundown? I have. Also, I find that resetting the door CONSTANTLY during the time of year when sunset changes by several minutes per day is tedious. Lastly, I have an egg business, and I have 120 free range birds. I won’t even go into what protecting my investment means to me. If I have to grab a bird out of a tree, I will. Sometimes the hens simply don’t want to “run the mating gauntlet” through the roosters to go into the coop. I just put two of them into the coop tonight when I manually went to close the door - one named Lizzie, one a banty Welsummer w/ no name. Those I put away tonight ARE still in lay. Many have names, and several I know the patterns on the eggs they lay. I definitely got an egg from Lizzie today. There’s ZERO correlation between roosting in tree and not being in lay...FYI. If you want to just let nature cull for you, that’s fine...but I do the culling around here and I would NEVER let a bird just be ripped apart by a predator because they’re “dumb.”🤷🏻‍♀️ It doesn’t teach the bird a lesson...and it makes my job of providing eggs harder. To each his own, but I NEVER use my auto door anymore. Waste of money to me.

Cool idea but really useless in my opinion. If you door was really heavy then yes and what if all the chicken don't make it in the coop before it close they would be stuck out side and if it was raining or what if it was to close as a chicken walks in but it doesn't make it in. Will it stop or keep going?
