You describing the 3.6 sounds like me describing the 4.0 in my 4Runner. Same complaints, no low end torque, all the power is up high and the transmission is very unresponsive. I guess it's a Toyota guy thing, because even the other 4R owners think there's no problem running this at 4K all day. I'm not really a yota guy, I just thought at the time that the 4Runner would make a good driver. The nicest thing I can say about the four liter is that it's an engine, it starts when I turn the key, and is likely to do so for several more hundred thousand miles.

I’ve been around off roading all of my life but I’ve always done it before in trucks. Last year I decided to get back into it and after doing lots of research I settled on ordering my first ever Jeep. I ordered a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. With my Jeep I wanted a naturally aspirated engine and while my heart wanted a manual transmission I knew that having an automatic would be far more beneficial for me in the kind of off roading that I would be doing so when I ordered my Jeep I ordered it with the 3.6 liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque and an 8 speed automatic transmission. 2 weeks after my Jeep was ordered Jeep announced the release of the 392 V-8. Had that been available with the Extreme Recon package I would have then ordered that one instead but it’s was too late in order to do so back then. I also considered getting the diesel engine but the only reason as to why I didn’t was because it had a smaller gas tank due to the def fluid and it didn’t come with 4:10 gears. I wasn’t buying my Jeep to be a speed demon. I wanted lower gear for better crawling and off roading. With my Jeep, it has done great so far and I have really enjoyed it but I do agree that the 3.6 liter Pentastar V-6 does seem slightly a little underpowered at times. But oh well. My Jeep has performed well for the most part. My only outright hate that I have in my Jeep is the eTorque set up. I absolutely hate everything about it and wish that the Jeep just had a regular alternator and single battery like almost every other vehicle does as well. With the battery and alternator, they’re cheap and can very easily be replaced on an off road trail or when someone is off grid. With the eTorque, all of the parts are crazy expensive. Especially the belt start generator and eTorque battery under the drivers side body on the vehicle. The eTorque also has its own cooling system and water pump and having to replace any of those components out on a trail somewhere or while you’re out camping totally off the grid in some remote location would be darn near impossible to do not to mention again the insanely expensive parts for the eTorque system.
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear this about the e torque in the Jeep. The Ram truck I drove with that setup felt pretty great but I didn't do any hard off road obstacles with it.
@j.r.7772 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits, as far as how it works it does fine but I hate the loss of simplicity and the cost required to fix those components if I ever have to. Then should that happen on a trail I would really be screwed. Yeah it can be done but nowhere as easy as a regular battery and alternator would. When I ordered my Jeep I had no idea what eTorque even was much less everything that consisted of it. And because when I ordered my Jeep on 11-30-2020 the 2021 Jeeps, which mine is didn’t have a lot of info out yet. I knew there was a start/stop button that could be turned off but that was it. And I turn mine off every time I get in my Jeep. I hate that thing too. My next one will definitely be a 392 so I don’t have to worry about all that crap.

And I hear for stalls on hill climbs, you can change your clutch pack to sonething like a centerforce clutch, which does really well in demonstrations to hold the engine speed without killing during off the pedal hill climbs in neutral. So it’s possible that a simple change can bring fun back to the manual transmission without the concerns of stalling on off-road adventures. Now, of course like any major obstacles, the clutch and engine will need to be feathered more. But just on a 15-20% grade, centerforce can help climbs with no pedals.

Having owned both a manual(2012) and an auto(2015) JK I can tell you for the amount of wheeling I do I much prefer the auto. The biggest drawback to the auto vs the manual that I have noticed is that the brakes on the auto seem weaker. On 35s with the manual I never felt the need to upgrade to better pads(I did upgrade to powerstop bits), on the auto I needed to upgrade when I went to 35s. Left foot braking is a thing in most motorsport applications, except maybe drag racing. I would brake with my left foot on my manual because I didn't have lockers, but knowing how to do that allowed me to run lines that "required" lockers. Even around town I use my left foot for braking on all my cars and have for the last 20+ years.

Some very good observations that you've made in this video. The "goodness" of the 3.6L and 6spd manual depends allot on overall gearing. Too little gear and it feels heavy, too much gearing and it feels like all revs no go for on road daily driving ("too much" gear is good off road). The 3.6L and 5spd auto are not a good match. The 3.6L and ZF 8spd are a much better match. I drove a 3.6L 8spd in a Durango and it was night/day better than a 3.6L 5spd auto in the Wrangler (and the Durango is heavier too). Wife drives a Durango RT with the 8spd auto and its quite nice. Keeps lower gears in "sport" and responds quickly when asked for a downshift. Even holds redline when I'm driving it (occasional Italian tune up)! I've been driving manual transmissions for over 30 years now, in NYC traffic much of that time (for reference), and until a few years ago I never drove an automatic transmission that I can get along with. The newer automatics, including the ZF 8spd, are pretty good. I'd love to see the ZF 8spd in the JK, and all the work it would take for the trans controller & ECU to jive.

@Stuka872 жыл бұрын
I have owned two JK's, one with a manual, and one with an auto. The manual was a 3.8L, and the auto is a 3.6L. The 3.6 IMO is a great engine, and is SO much better than the 3.8L was. The WA580 in the JK (US JK's never had the 545FE, which was a 3sp with a double overdrive) is actually a Mercedes transmission, and is super durable. The old 42RLE in the 3.8L JK's was garbage. Bad gearing and they failed regularly. I also find I have no issues with torque in my 3.6/Auto JK. I live up here in the mountains, I regularly drive up over 10K FT altitude. My old 3.8L Manual JK was ok. It certainly lacked power, and the manual was a way better option there compared to the 42RLE. One thing that people often don't take into account is that manuals (on any platform) need to be over geared. If you hear the engine knocking when under load, you are under geared (regardless of the engine). Really, if running tires over 35" in a JK, a manual really needs an atlas behind it for a second lower low range. A Rubicon can get away with 35's and 4.88's with the 4:1 low range. And as you note, heat is an issue with autos. I never had to worry about that with my manuals. Thankfully the JK has an internal temp readout for the transmission, and I tend to keep that up when offroad. And when climbing really steep grades (we have a second of the state HWY with a 26% grade here) the trans will get up over 230F. Which is on the high side, and I will pull over with the engine running in gear to let it cool (going to park causing it to heat up as the pump stops). So I need to add a larger aux cooler (I have the factory one that comes with the max tow package).
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the 3.6 being good in the JK. Like I said in the video, it's only "fine". It's pretty fun and qualifies as good in the mini van platforms and other cars it's utilized in. Just my opinion. Plus, if I had to pull over to let it cool down climbing a grade without towing, I would consider that a failure of the components to maintain proper operation and add another (or larger) external cooler immediately like you mentioned. I see plenty of people making the 3.6 and WA580 combo work great for extreme off roading so I know it's plenty capable. It's just not what I like. I'm not sure how much has changed internally and tune-wise from the JK to the JL but the 3.6 feels dramatically better now. Much better throttle response and actually feels "lively"... precisely what I'm missing in mine. But I get where you're coming from.
@Stuka872 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits The 8sp auto does make a big difference for the 3.6 as the gears are much shorter. Longer gears suit lower RPM torque engines, but not a DOHC engine like the 3.6L. The JL version is slightly different. The compression is a bit higher. Though both engines hate forced induction. The 3.6L we have has 10.2:1 compression, and the JL is 11:3. And admittedly, the grade here is a very extreme case. Its the steepest state HWY in North America (26% grade is no joke), and its at high altitude, where cooling is less efficient due to the thinner air. Its the only place I have ever had trans temp issues.
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
@@Stuka87 AHHH! Interesting to hear the JL 3.6 having such a higher compression ratio!!! That is indicative of many other things done to accommodate that and does explain the more responsive feel it has. I honestly wonder how difficult (and legal) it would be to get my 3.6 updated to JL engine specs. Seriously... you have got me so intrigued by this. It literally makes enough difference to me that I would finally stop whining about my JK 3.6... LOL
@Stuka872 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits There should not be any legal issues at all as its a newer engine. California in most cases allows engine swaps provided the engine is of a newer model year, and retains the same emissions that it came with. Thats how V8 swaps are done here in CA, but also why they are expensive. What's interesting is Jeep rates both of them at the same power. But I swear a JL feels more powerful. Even if both the JK and JL are manuals (different manuals, NSG370 vs Aisin D478).

You sound knowledgeable on the manual and gearing topic. I am thinking about getting a Wrangler Sport with manual transmission (because they are less expensive and fun to drive). What gear ratio would you recommend for HWY and general off roading? Tire size 33, 34 or 35 but no bigger. Thanks!

So ive been watching your channel for a long time, my question to you is do u like the tahoe better than the wj you had years ago? N if so why?
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I like the reliability of the Tahoe but everything else WAY better about that old WJ. If someone offered a trade for a nice one … I’d do it in a hot second. Does that answer your question 🤣

I hate watching guys hit the “reset” pedal on the trail. You are right tho, the JK auto is horrible! It’s the only reason I plan to LS swap my JK. Also, you’d have to LS swap a JK as you can’t put an older engine in a vehicle.
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
What is the reset pedal? I would love a V8 Jeep, either way might just be out of the cards for me in California though.

Completely bypass the cooler in the radiator. If the cooler or radiator fails bye bye transmission. Just go to external coolers
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
I liked the factory external cooler on my Ram… never let the trans fluid get too hot.
