Automatonophobia can be loosely defined as the fear of wax figures, humanoid robots, audio-animatronics, or other figures designed to represent humans. Why does this fear exist, and why do even those who don't suffer from this phobia still have some sort of apprehension around these types of figures?

I have this phobia and it's a full blown phobia for me. I've dealt with it since early adolescence and was never really exposed to scary movies or anything like that. I also don't have a fear of corpses. I discovered I had it when we visited a hall of presidents and had a full blown panic attack.

I have the same fear. For me, it all started when I went to the Animal Kingdom at Disney World and saw the Yeti animatronic on Expedition Everest and cried. Now, whenever I think of them I think they are here with me and have panic attacks. And the sad thing is, I love Disney World.

At age 25 I'm still afflicted by a trauma from when I was 6 when I was on a dark ride that's like a target shooting game in a cutesy haunted house. There was an animatronic suit of armor that falls toward you just slightly as a jump scare, but it tilted too far and may or may not have bumped my head, and I still have nightmares. At age 21 I got peer-pressured into going on the ride again and it still scared the crap out of me. Feels like the dumbest fear ever.

YEP!!! I have this. It’s adrenaline pumping, anxiety for me. Almost like someone is holding a gun to my head and I need to RUN AWAY. I get like this around giant stuffed animals too. I can’t go shopping around Halloween because there’s stuff everywhere! Which sucks because I LOVE Halloween lol I know, wicked contradiction. My first memory of experiencing this fear was when I was maybe 4 years old and my sister pointed out a BIG Frankenstein painting at a store.
@rae7158
@rae7158 6 жыл бұрын
The worst part is, no one understands or gets this fear and always thinks I’m just being weird. I’ve literally had to have friends hide stuff from me so I could be in rooms before because I wouldn’t go in them. Like my friend had this giant panda and she’d have to hide it every time I was over. And if something big or a statue or mannequin or mascot catches me off guard, oh MAN do I cause a scene!!!!!! A thought that really creeps me out of thinking if I were ever in the vicinity of the snuffaluffagus from Sesame Street... WOAH. Or just any of the Sesame Street puppets or The Muppets, is probably have a heart attack.

Abby Weaver yes!! I love art museums too but it’s such a gamble. I always try to do like a virtual tour of the museum before I go to avoid making a scene and feeling trapped/scared out of my mind. We cancelled a trip to the Philadelphia zoo once because I found out there was an art installation happening with giant animal sculptures placed randomly throughout the zoo lol. I’m so glad someone finally understands how bad going in Halloween stores is!! My friends used to try to take me in, one on each side of me holding my hands while I closed my eyes and put my head down. They’d guide me to the kids section and I’d get there and just start crying and look down and run out of the store as quickly as possible like I’m surrounded by murderers and they’re all trying to kill me!

This fear literally haunts me. My family initially thought I was scared of ghost trains (despite me LOVING horror), but then they saw me cry and cover my eyes/ears (I don't like the sounds either) on rides with these figures literally made for young children. Being confined to a seat and seeing these figures terrifies me, but I've found that if I'm walking around I'm a little bit more relaxed. Some rides are so pretty and I wish I could enjoy them but I can't thanks to this fear!

I actually have a fear of this, I’m very scarred of human animatronics. This was caused on a trip to Skegness as a child, we were on the pier and we saw this shooting gallery. You shoot the figures and they move; the theme for this one was an old wash room and it has seen better days. Because the animatronics were fading, their faces were stone grey, one of them has their clothes all torn and you can see the robotics and they look not very human. In the gallery there was an ark house if you shoot the door an animatronic slowly appears as he opens the door. By then I completely had enough and my parents took me somewhere else. I can’t touch them, stand near them, go on a ride if they have them on display because of what happened. I also hate wax models and certain masks if they look very creepy.

If you were to look at the far past periods of human evolution based on our current mental structure it leads to some interesting questions. We are almost hardwired to be distrustful of things the look nearly human. When we are sitting around with white noise in the background our brain puts it together into words, that trigger a fear response its known as audio matrixing, and is well documented but poorly understood. And then we have visual matrixing (way overused to try to debunk). The intriguing question there is why faces? Based on how traits evolve it would seem our ancestors needed to be wary of something that was very quite, had really good camoflage, and looked kinda human but still a little bit off.

When I was little, I was afraid of the mannequins in the stores. Yes, sounds strange but I was. I remember clinging to my mother's pant leg every time we would go into a department store. There was something about them that freaked me out. Probably as you described Kat. I also had, to a lesser degree, a fear of dolls. I still dont like them to be honest. I try to stay away from them. I don't have fits, I'm just repelled by them. A general dislike for them. Thanks for sharing Kat. All this time I thought it was just me. I didn't know there was a name for it.

I used to be so scared of them in shops but thankfully most of them don’t have faces anymore- which weirdly makes them less scary. But I recently went into an antiques shop with my mum and there were a couple of mannequins displaying the clothes and they looked so real and I held only my mums arm so tightly. And I might have cried a tiny bit also and made us get out of that hell hole asap

TL;DR: The Uncanny Valley I 100% percent agree on the corpse aspect because of the Uncanny Valley. The concept that suggests humanoid objects which appear almost, but not exactly, like real human beings elicit uncanny, or strangely familiar, feelings of eeriness and revulsion in observers. Thus things people find unsettling like corpses fall in that category, so do zombie (aka moving corpses), and so do prosthetic hands. I find the closer we get to super realistic video games where the graphic just look like they filmed real people super unsettling since that also falls into the Uncanny Valley. Quantic Dream is a really good example of super detailed graphics and motion tracking that kinda fall into that category.

I'm afraid of animatronics and when dolls, but in a specific way. I can play with dolls and I'm fine with them, but them moving in movies and stuff scares me and makes me paranoid sometimes. On the animatronic side, I can go to Disney world and enjoy it, I LOVE it's a small world, but if I think about animatronics (without even being there) I get a feeling of anxiety or fear. That's not it though, I can't be close to them, like at chucky cheese, even turning my back and standing in front of them gives me fear and anxiety. If a ride ever had a problem at Disney world where we would have to get out, I would want to literally DIE. No joke. I think about it a lot, and I just can't, I would be frozen in fear if that happened. On the contrary, I am not afraid of stuff because they are human-like.

i have this phobia towards mannequins, wax figures and robots. the corpse theory kind of explains this for me seeing as my brother passed away when i was 9 and i was too overwhelmed to view his corpse at the funeral. i was both filled with fear and sadness. i ended up having a slight uncomfortable feeling towards humanoid figures after this and it was strange because when i was little i loved mannequins and stuff, i thought they were funny. it all escalated when i was 12 and had an intense nightmare about mannequins chasing me. what i didn't realize until now is that i was really, really torn up about my brother at the time of that nightmare and in the own part of my mental health cycle. another possible reason i had this nightmare is that that day i went to a museum with robots and wax figures that creeped me the fuck out. it all makes sense now

I have it. When I was like- 7 I was using a story app that my parents told me not to use. I was playing as a girl who used this website that pairs people together based on their taste. So my character got paired up with this dude (let's call him... Alex) aNd the two started dating. but something happened and some human used an electric gun thingy and shot Alex. The picture that it showed was of Alex on the floor cluching his stomach that had wires and stuff in the shape of the bottom of a shoe. I thought he was being turned into a robot so I started crying. I was so scared but I decided to figure out a bit more and I figured out that he was actually a robot and that the person (let's call him Greg) who shot Alex was someone who worked for the company that made Alex. So- Greg was trying to kill Alex and take him back to the company that made him. I was super scared about that. That's when I gained a fear of robots, I constantly have nightmares about robots. Fnaf was the cause of my animatronic fear. And I just fine maniquins scary cause they look like humans and it's hard to explain. As for wax figures, I get scared cause they look like humans but their not but I get scared that they used skin to make them or things like that. Or that they used actual humans and just sowed stuff into the human after killing the human. This video made me a bit scared but it was worth it now that I know more about the phobia

You know those dolls that ventriloquist use. I think they are super creepy. Especially the ones that have big eyes and very wide smile. I can´t go near them or even look at them. Now I have to stop thinking about them. I guess I have ventriloquist doll automatonophia.

I was walking on a waterfront and ran into this civil war statue holding a bayonet, as if ready to attack. Anxiety swept over me quickly. I quickly turned to get away, only to to be faced with a tribal statue yielding a large stick, I almost fainted. I ran from the area and had to sit in a bench for a moment. This was only 3 years ago. Thinking about it now made me dizzy.🥺🤷🏾‍♀️

I have automatonophobia specifically the fear of animatronics hence why I don't like the rides in Disneyland but otherwise I like Disneyland which is stupid because pretty much every ride there has animatronics in it of some sort. I'm also extremely terrified of "It's a small world" over all other animatronic rides cuz those animatronic dolls in it are terrifying as fuck. Anyone else feel the same way?

I have automatonophobia. I don't know why or how, I just remember being extremely scared of any audio animatronics or wax figures ever since I was a baby. I also had a huge fear of store mannequins too. I grew out of the store mannequin fear, but I'm still afraid of audio animatronics. I really can't get close to any animatronic, which has really stopped me from going on different rides at Disney World and other theme parks. Even though I have this fear of animatronics, I'm still a huge fan of Five Nights at Freddy's, which doesn't really make any sense to me. I think it's because FNAF is just a video game, and I know it's not real. But yeah, anyway, I do have a huge fear of audio animatronics.

Yep, I %100 have this fear. Especially around animatronics. Disney World was not fun for tiny me. I’m okay around dead folks though, so maybe the theory doesn’t apply to me?

I also get very nervous around humanoid robots. It´s uncanny valley. I don´t think my fear for them is because of corpses. It is more fear for AI. Artificial intelligence it´all around us yet it´s also something that us humans can not fully control.

I’m afraid of pretty much anything along these lines. Dolls, mannequins, wax figures, you name it. Mannequins are the worst, though. Dolls, I can handle to a point. I’m not sure where this fear came from, but it sucks and people just don’t understand it’s a real thing -__-

Corpses are not part of my automatonophobia. I can touch a body in a casket. I don’t want to be in a room with one by myself though.🤔 I am not afraid of most mannequins or some statues, but I don’t recognize the fear until I see it. In my city I can walk by certain ones without issue and others make me feel faint. I did walk closer to one daily, until I was no longer fearful of it. I was surprised to meet another person with similar fears, but hers was more severe. We have horse statues, differently designed, around the city and they give her anxiety. They don’t bother me. Some pictures of statues make me turn my head until I can cheer my screen. I think mine derived from watching Greek mythology movies as a child. Statues always came alive in them. The Hanna Barbers land had a boat ride that took you through an animated tunnel filled with larger than life characters. They loomed all around you in the darkness. The exit was a large mouth with Gargamel from the smurfs reaching out from the side. 😂😂 My family took that trip to Hanna Barberra land for years. It traumatized me.🤣

I think automatonphobia being linked to fear of corpses is a very likely theory. They both tend to give me similar thoughts , like 'But what if it moves?', which is why I think they definitely could be linked. I by no means have a phobia of either, just a mild... uncomfortable feeling? I can walk through a wax museum just fine and have fun but I wouldn't do it alone. I wonder if this phobia would cover human statues?

Mannequins are cool. Dolls can often be creepy, but depends on context. Had a burned down area (former house) nearby; all that was left was a burned up doll, mostly a head. Eww. Nothing scares me more than needles. Like, even peeking through my fingers is too close for comfort with medical stuff on TV. Yeah... a grown man that's mortally terrified of Grey's Anatomy. Srsly.
