There is something so oddly amusing that in a sport where you typically think of the contestants as these aerodynamic sleek race cars that one of them was just a fat box with fans on the end.

Great list. Not furious about anything on it. Others would be the Ford RS200, The Porsche Indycars (both the '80-81Interscope and the '89-90 debacle) and the Lancia LC-1

The RS200 was meant to have rapid revisions with development season to season / each year, but ofc Group B died before they could do that. Partly because of the RS200's crash in Portugal killing spectators. Ofc, the Lancia Delta S4 crash which killed the driver and co-driver was what really killed Group B, but really it was a combination of every lethal incident leading up to it IMO

The wingless 9X8 deserved a mention, it was doing really welll in it's Le Mans debut but it had mechanical issues, after that Peugeot gave it a wing and couldn't keep up with the rest during this years race.
@Box1-lf9hv
@Box1-lf9hv 3 күн бұрын
The 9X8 did got two podiums. Last year at 6 Hours of Monza and this year's 8 Hours of Bahrain with the new 9X8, that finished originally 4th, although 3rd due to the 51 Ferrari stripped from podium because of exceeding its tire allocation. The new 9X8 did also finished 4th at Fuji, which is another good result for it. The wingless 9X8 could have also got a podium at Qatar, but it sadly ran out of fuel and got DQ'd afterwards (F you, ACO and FIA.) Tbh, if I ran Peugeot Sport, I could have actually just create a new car with a wing from the beginning of the program instead of a wingless one.

I hate Nissan for what they did. They spent so much money on an innovative car and when it was time to race it wasn’t done in time, an hybrid car without hybrid, they could’ve just work on it for the 2016 season (or just Le Mans) but instead they completely retired it even before it could run at its full potential.

There's a Gordon Murray video where talks about the Fan Car. He asked a lawyer, what "primary purpose of a movable device" meant in his interpretation. That at least 50% of the purpose is not aerodynamic. So Gordon calculated and found that 55% of the fan's airflow was through the radiators, 45% sucking the car to the ground. The FIA did a test of their own and came out with nearly the identical figure.

@@badgers1975 Bro what are you on about? The TS020 competed 8 years after the 787, the 787 didn't win the year the TS020 lost, as a matter of fact they were developed under completely different regulation sets. Nothing about the 787 was "rule bending" it competed in the C2 class the year it won, which had more restrictions on it than the primary C1 class, they were even dropped further down the grid then they qualified as C1 cars were moved up, with the race winning Mazda and their best qualifier starting 19th. They specd the LeMans car for reliability and fuel efficiency, not outright pace. You're mad that a car won an endurance race with endurance racing tactics lmao. This might be news to you, but the outright fastest cars very often don't win LeMans, because again, it is an ENDURANCE race. Not a sprint. And your statement about "rule bending" is an outright lie.

@tylercampbell2362 Күн бұрын
@@badgers1975 lmfao again, what are you on about? Go find me a source-even secondhand-claiming the Mazda had a 20% bigger fuel tank than their competitors. You can’t because that’s pure nonsense. Look up the regulations, the entry sheets, etc. They were actually at a disadvantage with fuel because unlike C1 cars who were allowed to use unlimited fuel, C2 cars were limited to 2,550 L of fuel for the race. It’s a well known and often discussed fact with the 787b that the drivers were instructed to go as fast as possible while saving as much fuel as possible, and it is this fact that is often credited with giving them the win. If you’re going to be salty and disparage the team and car who won fair in square the least you can do is not pull shit out of thin air that’s complete bullshit with no factual basis supporting it whatsoever 🤣🤣

My old love the 307 WRC is missing. It had poor reliability, that 4 gear transmission was the worst idea in WRC in decades, but great speed in the first year and was hampered by the Pirelli tires in the second season, when Michelin was clearly best in class. After that Peugeot pulled out of WRC. I'm sure it had the potential of giving Loeb and Citroen much more trouble. The engine was the fastest in class and it had great aerodynamics.

The 2008 hatchback Subaru Impreza WRC is another great contender, launched partly through the 2008, to replace the underperforming, unreliable and ill-handling saloon version that was used in 2006, 2007 and early in 2008. The hatchback finished it's first rally ( in Greece ) in second place, but sadly Subaru pulled out of WRC after the 2008 season, probably due to the recession, it was a very sad fate for a car that deserved alot better. Ford RS200 also arrived to late to the Group B class, and could have done alot better if Group B had continiued for longer, but sadly the tragic accidents in 1986 spelled the end of Group B, but just like the Metro 6R4 it did end up in rallycross aswell.

I was going to say the same thing, they found a "loophole" in the rules they thought they could exploit to get very high downforce very efficiently it was just rushed and poorly managed that it never worked correctly. In sims where it still isn't accurate to the original plan it still is somewhat competitive if driven well and it has crazy straight line speed due to it's design. I think the real car they had hoped to have the energy recovery be deployed from the rear wheels which would've made it AWD in the acceleration zones where it suffers most

The Hendrick Motorsports Garage 56 Camaro would be a recent example. It proved to be the fastest in its class and even outran the Hypercar race cars for a time, but like the Toyota GT-ONE, mechanical issues plagued the car. It was fixed, but it lost a lot of positions after repairs and ultimately finished with a poor position. the following year, NASCAR announced that their Garage 56 entry has been retired, so it was never given a second chance. Nevertheless, it left quite the impression on an international scale as NASCAR is generally ridiculed outside America.

The TVR Speed 12. Another one killed by rule changes before it hit the track. Then famously cancelled as a road car when the company boss, in possibly the ONLY socially conscious measure the company ever took, declared it too dangerous to be put into the hands of the typical road driving customer. Let's see, aluminium chassis, fibreglass body, and ... a monster 7.7 litre V12 with a power output north of 900 BHP. With NO driver safety aids whatsoever. One example was built, and the owner was specially vetted before being allowed to buy (and drive) it. It's been described as Satan's Own Chariot. Also considered frightening to drive even by professional racing drivers.

Important things to note about P34: - Scheckter said years later that his negative comments were more result of frustration than genuine opinion about the car. Biggest issues of 6 wheel designs was tyre wear and brake ballance: - Smaller diameter wheels were rotating at much higher rotational speeds, causing issues with overheating and excessive wear - 3 axle design made typical front-rear brake ballance not viable and drivers struggled to find proper ballance between both of front axles. This issue made it extremely easy to lock up front wheels and made trailbraking almost impossible, exagerating already serious issues with tyre wear.

Great video, so many legends covered there. For me, Toyota TS010 needs a mention for sure. Savage car that should have won more. I'd also say the 1994 Toyota, the one that was within an hour of winning Le Mans until its gear linkeage failed, leaving the driver (I believe Brilliant Bob Wollek?) fumbling under the cover to pull it into gear while the Dauer 962 sailed on by. I'd also say the Lola Aston B09/60. A truly epic car that won a lot in ELMS, but never stood a chance at the Big One thanks to the diesels.

One car that deserved better, not because it was unsuccessful, but because it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, is 100% the Jaguar XJR-14. It dominated the 1991 WSC season, and yet, because Jaguar pulled it from Le Mans, it doesn't get nearly as remembered as it should, much unlike the Mazda 787B that gets far more recognition than it deserves out of a massively unsuccessful 2 years of competition, just because it won Le Mans. While the 787B appears everywhere and everyone knows it, even creating ridiculous myths around it, the XJR-14 is barely remembered, and it doesn't even appear in games at all, unlike other much more unsuccessful Group C cars.

The car is such a beauty, and it ever looked to me like the F40 LMs weren't so-so GT competitors. Whether it would've been worthy of a win, I do not know, but it certainly was worth better than being buried in a cheikh's garage somewhere.

The McLaren MP4/8 and MP4/9 both deserved an engine that could push out good power and be reliable at the same time.

Staying on cars that deserved better or were never raced, it would be a cool video to go over the group B and group S projects that never rallied. Some of them are either crazy, from auto companies you really wouldn't expect, or both.

Strictly speaking the 6 wheel F1 car concept didn't die out with the Tyrrell as Williams were developing a 6 wheel (4 rear wheels the same size as the front tyres) FW08 in the early 1980s. I think they may have been developing a FW07 version as well before switching to the FW08. This development was halted when rules were introduced limiting the number of wheels to 4. I think Cosworth were also developing a 6 wheeler that included 4WD - I saw the chassis in the York Car Museum in WA.

I think Tyrrell got a good idea wrong, and Williams got it right by having the dual axle at the back of the FW08B. Better traction, the 2 X fat rears were replaced with 4 X fronts leading to better aero overall until the whole idea was shut down by the 1983+ rules. We won't talk about the Ferrari 312T6...

Lola T70!! 238 wins, 348 podiums. But it's not called a "Porsche" nor a "Ferrari." But even people who call themselves die-hard race fans have no idea what it is or if they see one reflectively call it "Ford GT40." Dario did a triple test one time. He said Porsche didn't spend on frank on safety. Ferrari didn't spend one lire on driver comfort. But he said the T70 was exactly what a customer car should be. Comfortable. Simple. No bad habits.

Oh yeah. DeltaWing doing LMP1 lap times with 300hp and 30% better mileage. If the other drivers hadn't crashed it and if the transmission hadn't been made of glass, I think the car could have been amazing over a longer term.

Similar to the MG, you have the Citroen BX 4TC which came to the group B too late and had a diabolically bad run but instead of iterating and fixing the car, Citroen attempted to erase it from existance by attempting to buy back and destroy the homologation cars!

From this video, the Lancia Delta S4 should make this list because of shortened Group B. They could've had a dynastic rivalry with Peugeot and Audi were it not for Toivonen's crash.

The 2J's only real success is as a proof of concept. It was terrible as a racecar due to its unreliability. It was a cool idea, but kicking up debris was a real concern. Had the fan not been banned and reliability issue solved, a grid of 20-30 fan cars throwing debris at each other (and any unfortunate bystanders) is not a realistic proposition to let slide without regulatory intervention of some kind. On the WSC-95, it did get a few opportunities to race outside of LM24. Thing is that sportscar prototype racing was in a weird place in the after FIA SWC and the IMSA GTP were defunct. In Europe, the ISRS was tryng to get off the ground but the lack of participation led to low grid numbers. The WSC-95 raced at the 1997 ISRS race at Donington and easily won. It was supposedly entered for another race but withdrawn and the ISRS was no more. The car was invited to race in the US by the IMSA successor series, but Joest turned them down because much like the fiasco of 1995, they would've been too hindered in performance be competitive for a win.
