I was at a show recently where there was a stunning ‘73 Pontiac Grand Safari Station Wagon and I overheard a Brit describe it as “so grotesque it’s almost nice.” What a knob.

Capt777harris I know, my dad has and had a few yanks because we love ‘em. We’ve got a beautiful ‘68 Country Squire and it’s just the best thing ever. Everything works on it and it’s mint. Even the radio still works, the wacky rear tailgate and the electric front seats. In 1968!

tsh barely any, I think back in the day you used to get more of them but there are scarcely any here now. For some reason, people in the UK who bring over American cars here always buy the worst and most boring ones they can find like 90s Camaros and really scrappy pickups when there are so many much nicer cars they could bring over. It’s a real shame because there were so many fantastic American cars from the 20th Century which are only really appreciated by our LHD European cousins, particularly in France, Germany and Holland.

I was working for a rich oil man when the Mark IV came out.The man had to have one so he flew his secretary and I to Denver to pick up the first one available. It was the first Mark IV ever in New Mexico and I was sporting a beautiful woman in it all the way from Denver to southern NM. Wow if I had known what a memorable thing I was doing, I might have enjoyed it a little more..... Probably not!!!

Great video. The Mark III is in a league of its own with style and the far higher quality of the interior materials. The Mark III dash features real wood veneer as opposed to plastic used on the later Mark series.

There was pride in Engineering then. Corporations made huge profits, workers were not paid bonuses .. The Executive were ... The need for greed saw reduction in quality, specification, Engineering ... Then the wheels fell off. The Fuel crisis when prices reached stratospheric heights killed these beauties off. They weren't performance cars by any means, they were built for the ride and motoring pleasure. Now one wouldn't be able to find a parking spot large enough. When I as a a 14 year old saw a Lincoln Continental being crushed into a cube in the movie >Goldfinger< 1964 it brought tears to my eyes ...

Because when those Mark 3's and Mark 4's were brand new at the Lincoln dealers they'd sell for around $10,000.. which was a LOT of money for a car..considering you could buy a brand new Ford Torino or Thunderbird for only $3000 at the Ford Dealer.

The Mark III is my favorite of the Lincoln Mark Continental models, they have the best interiors/powertrains of the bunch, for the Mark IV the 1972 model year was the only one I liked because it was the last year prior to the Emission Control Devices, smog pumps and 5mph bumpers.

My first brand new car was a 1977 Mark V. Loaded to the guts minus the moonroof. I did order it and waited 8 weeks for it to come in. Paid $ 11,900 and remember it like it was yesterday. It drove like you were sitting on your recliner. Wish I still had it.

There are so many communities and associations around Europe. The best cars you can find in Northern States (Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands...) They have the best selections of all!! Take a look at RD Classics./Germany. By the way, most of these are very simple built and most of Parts for restoration are still available, and they are not really expensive.. Or you make a nice trip to the southern areas of us, Florida, South Carolina

*Great episode! Nothing I love more than the old floating American Luxury Barges! My father owned every one of these Lincolns, he was heartbroken when Lincoln started to downsize their models. He gave the new smaller Lincoln's a chance in '79 when he bought a beautiful little Lincoln, Versailles. It has a gold on gold exterior/interior color scheme, and actually turned out to be a pretty decent little Lincoln, considering... I still have the old '79 Versailles in my garage, she looks and runs like new, she is original and unrestored, no rust or worn fabric. As of 2020 it has just 64-K on the odometer, not bad for a 41 year old car. I'd much rather have one of his magnificent Lincolns from the '60's though. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.*

I bought a used 1973 Mark IV in 1980. I was only 20 years old and my friends thought I was in the money but I really didn't give that much for it. That car was a dream and I wish I still had it. It was SO well built and smooth as silk to drive. Total luxury!

@@markuschristiansen7874 If it was kept in good condition and not left to set up somewhere for years, it may be ok. But yes, there could be potential problems with a car that old. But if you have the time and money to invest in getting it going, you may love it. Those cars had HUGE engines with a LOT of horsepower and they were pretty darn tough and would haul A$$, LOL! Just beware, with gas as high as it is, the gas mileage you'll get will be TERRIBLE. Just thought you would have wanted to know that.

In the early 00s, I worked for a local ma and pa shop. We had an elderly lady customer with a 76 Town Car that her husband, long gone, had special ordered new. Triple white with a dark blue pinstripe, it had every option available at the time, including a police spec 460 and dual exhausts. She came in every 3 months for an oil change, regardless of mileage. ( car showed 84k on it last I saw it) It was like new. And she was so proud of it. Not a ding on it nor spec of rust. Total time capsule. I drove her to her home in it several times when she decided not to wait for service. 20+ ft of pure bliss. So quiet. So comfortable. Lots of low end torque. I always wanted to take it out on the open road and really ring it out, but never had the chance. Touchy brakes though. It was 1 of those cars you had to swing into a parking spot, SLOWLY, while the frt tires scrubbed away. I wonder what happened to that car?

I agree. One of my biggest regrets is; I had a chance to buy a 1970 Lincoln Mark III, back in the early 1990's. It only had 35,000 miles and was in mint condition (Still had that "new car" smell) for only $1500. At the time, I had plenty of money but was on a "minimalist" kick, where, if I didn't absolutely need something, I wouldn't buy it, because I was afraid of being a hoarder. The Mark III was white with a white leather interior. It was marvelous. I think about that car every so often. It was awesome. Dennis talks about the instrument cluster being like jewelry. I remember that it's clock was made by Cartier, so maybe Cartier had a hand in designing the whole instrument cluster or layout? 1970 was the best year for the Mark series, IMO. The car was still hand built. It didn't go assembly line until the next year & had some other advantage, which I can't recall offhand, over the 1969 model. To add insult to injury, during the same period, I turned down my cousin's perfect, always garage kept, Datsun 240z, which he offered me for the same price, $1500, as my dad's friend had on the Mark III, for the same reason, I was on that minimalist kick! Most of the time, when people pass up great opportunities like these, it's because they are short of money, but I was rolling in cash in those days, and I wouldn't have even noticed spending $1500 or even $3000, because I was too busy working to spend the fruits of my labors. ...That's what I get, for trying to get my sh~t together (I do have a tendency to be a pack rat). ...C'est la vie...

Some may say that the land yacht was the pinnacle of automotive luxury. But I say it was a stage in the evolution of cars. At first for a more comfortable ride, they added springs, then they added shock absorbers so it absorbs all the bumps for a silky smooth ride. Then they went to air suspension which is an improvement, and now they are at electromagnetic suspension. So it wasn’t the pinnacle for luxury but the pinnacle of luxury for that design and era.

I once had a 1973 Mark IIII that I purchased used! It was a limited edition silver inside and out, yes silver leather seats!!! It was outfitted with mag wheels and the front plate said "Stinkin Lincoln"!!! I absolutely loved that fucking car!!! Everything they say is true, the ride was literally just like floating on a cloud!!! And I always had to keep an eye on the speedometer because with the luxurious ride that car would exceed the speed limit in no time!!! I always thought the'73 Mark had the best styling and it turned many heads and I felt like King of the road!!! All I have now are my memories, I sure do miss that beautiful kick-ass road yacht!!! Only thing I don't miss is the cash i had to shell out to keep the insatiable gas tank full!!! Oh memories........

when I was 19 (in '82) I bought a '75 Mark IV with 75,000 miles. it was easily the most comfortable car I've ever owned. the high-backed, deep split-bench seat supported my tall frame and long legs better than any car before or since. while it didn't jump right off the line, when you put your foot down it gathered speed surprisingly rapidly. the day I test drove it, we turned out of the dealership and stopped at the traffic light at the base of a bridge. the salesman turned to me with a grin and said, "when the light turns green, go ahead and stomp it!" I did, and the car started to roll until about 20 mph. then the front end lifted a bit and the hood twisted from the engine's torque and it felt like the hand of God gave that 5600 pound behemoth a massive push. by the time we reached the top of the bridge (about 120 yards), the car had hit 70 mph, shifted into third, and roared down the other side, still accelerating. I never felt the pavement breaks or heard anything other than the muted thrush of the exhaust. it was that smooth. the only car I ever drove that had a softer ride was a '77 New Yorker I test drove about the same time... but the seats weren't high-back and it was just a whisker less comfortable for me to sit in; plus it had the 400 lean-burn which I knew was a problematic engine and even less power. at the end of the day, I chose the Continental. how I wish I still had that car. :((

I've posted elsewhere that after the '79 gas crisis we could buy cars like that for around $500. My friends had a Mk III; Chrysler Newport; Sedan de Ville; Ford LTD; Olds 98 Regency; and I had a '77 Cordoba. People couldn't trade in their luxury cars fast enough to buy compact cars.

An interesting feature, that proved very useful to Frank Cannon specifically, since he was "portly", was, that the driver's seat could swivel he and his belly, out from underneath the steering wheel, to make getting in and out of the car much easier with or without a pistol in hand!

Dad had a Mark IV in burgundy with a white vinyl top and burgundy cloth interior. It would really move and the ride was amazing! We would be on the highway and mom would ask dad, "How fast are we going?" He would say "Only 80!" from the back i could see we were doing a 100! But it was such a smooth ride you could not tell!

My parent's bought a loaded 1973 Oldsmobile Custom cruiser, canary yellow with simulated wood grain sides, power everything, rocket 455, luggage rack, thermometer on the driver's door, comfortron duel a/c and we drove it all over the country on vacation's. You could put the back seats down and put a full size mattress in the back which worked out great for going on dates when I was in high school....lol! I miss that car!

We called them boats in my old neighborhood. My Dad and later my older brother moved on from cool muscle cars to Lincoln continentals. All boats. They rode nice, very smooth but they were never for me. I'm a Jeep man and eventually will add an '87 Grand National to the garage. But those boats were like riding on a couch.

Back in the 80s when we were in our early twenties, my friend David had a 1979 Lincoln Mark V Bill Blass Blue/White with 8V400. We had a lot of fun in that beautiful ride which was still like new. Only downside to that car was only a few were built so it was hard to hide your whereabouts or where you were hangin' out. Doing the car cruise on Madison Ave during summers in Indy was fun and that car was fast.

Love the Marks! My first car was at 16 years old, I had a 1976 Mark IV (Yellow with Dk. Brown vinyl top and Brown leather guts). Also had an '84 Mark VII a couple years later. In order, my favorite Marks are.... the '84-92 Mark VII (1st place), the '73-76 Mark IV, specifically the '74-76 (because of the taillights) (2nd place), the '77-79 Mark V (3rd place), the '93-98 Mark VIII (4th place), then the Mark III. Personal preferences, folks. I am also a fan of ALL Town Cars (prefer the Sedans) and LOVE LOVE LOVE the '60's Continental (Sedan and Convertibles). Thanks for posting!!!

What a great collection of "high quality" Marks that bring back child hood memories. My dad had a 69 (Maroon), 72 (White) and a 77 (Maroon) too. I recall going for rides with the folks stuck in the back seat - absolutely hated being trapped without a door or even window control. The '72 had a bad rust problem on the truck right along the bottom edge. Paint bubbled up bad after only a couple of years old but otherwise was a pretty good car. Later, his brand new 77 had crooked Opera windows - the interior panels did not line up with the outside, hide away head light cover broke and when he was showing off his new car to my uncle the passenger side door handle came off when he closed the door. What a pile of junk. It stayed at the dealership getting fixed and then someone through an egg at it while it was parked outside at the dealer. Then after all the he got it home, I was washing it and discovered it had rust under most of the paint. Nice floaty yachts but quality was number 99. That was his last Lincoln, he got ride of it not long after and switch back to Cadillac Fleetwood.

From Leo: Great cars! I spent some time in 1974 with a 1972 Thunderbird with a 460 (385 horsepower). While not a Lincoln, The 1972 Thunderbird was a big, smooth, quiet and powerful car. It was a real gas guzzler. I am still sad I will never have a car like that again. Thanks for the spotlight on the Lincolns.

Whatever it had, simply flooring it would result in wheel spin and flooring it in a corner would get out of control really fast. I still miss that kind of car.

The Southfork Ranch where Dallas was filmed has on display the Mark V that Jim Davis (Jock Ewing) drove in the series. Very pristine. It has around 20,000 miles on the clock, but I could be wrong about that.

In the late 70's my mother's best friend from high school married a man named Roland and he owned a 1977 gold Lincoln Continental Mark V and when we went back to my mom's home town to visit them we would ride in that car. I was only 6-7-8 years old but I still remember how much I loved that car.

One of my biggest regrets is; I had a chance to buy a 1970 Lincoln Mark III, back in the early 1990's. It only had 35,000 miles and was in mint condition (Still had that "new car" smell) for only $1500. At the time, I had plenty of money but was on a "minimalist" kick, where, if I didn't absolutely need something, I wouldn't buy it, because I was afraid of being a hoarder. The Mark III was white with a white leather interior. It was marvelous. I think about that car every so often. It was awesome. Dennis talks about the instrument cluster being like jewelry. I remember that it's clock was made by Cartier, so maybe Cartier had a hand in designing the whole instrument cluster or layout? 1970 was the best year for the Mark series, IMO. The car was still hand built. It didn't go assembly line until the next year & had some other advantage, which I can't recall offhand, over the 1969 model. To add insult to injury, during the same period, I turned down my cousin's perfect, always garage kept, Datsun 240z, which he offered me for the same price, $1500, as my dad's friend had on the Mark III, for the same reason, I was on that minimalist kick! Most of the time, when people pass up great opportunities like these, it's because they are short of money, but I was rolling in cash in those days, and I wouldn't have even noticed spending $1500 or even $3000, because I was too busy working to spend the fruits of my labors. ...That's what I get, for trying to get my sh~t together (I do have a tendency to be a pack rat). ...C'est la vie...

Handling is secure, they are safe, fuel economy that won’t break the bank, acceleration far improved, and reliability that could only be dreamt of 40 years ago. It’s fun to look back with rose tinted glasses, but you also gotta appreciate all the nice things we have today.

@@AfterDark33 I agree most of those things are nice, however, imo, peak safety to functionality ratio was reached in the 90's with the likes of Saab and Volvo. After that the cars have become so bloated with air bags and tech to the point where you actually need cameras to be able to see what's going on around the cars. The pillars are too thick to see by properly, the "beltlines" are so high up that you feel like your sitting in a WW1 tank, the interior is so cramped that you may feel claustrophobic, and the belt beeping warning never stops nowadays when you take the belt off in a low speed, even if you stop the cars and put in parking mode. You have to turn the car completely off if you trigger it. Also, the cars have to be so big that you can barely fit them in between cars on parking lots if you don't want to buy a compact car. Meanwhile I can ride my 1998 Saab 900 and don't hit my head in the cieling, hang my elbow up on the windowsill, don't have my ears beeped off and still feel pretty darn safe. So I hope we can some day ease up a little on some of the safety regulations, but we'll see if that ever happens.

You know, if we can make huge vehicles like the Suburban, with gas mileage that people can live with, there's no reason we couldn't make big comfortable cars like these Lincolns but with engines and multi-speed automatics a lot more efficient than the originals. I had a '75 Mark IV.

Back when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s our next door neighbor had Continentals like these. I'm pretty sure he had all three of the ones in this video. He was one of those guys who liked to get brand new cars every year or two. That and his wife had a beautiful Jaguar XKE 12 cylinder. I remember hearing her struggling to get it started during the winter. It has a very unique starter sound to it that I'll never forget. It was unique in a way similar to the old Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge starters of the past. We had a few of the old town and country wagons back then, so I remember the tune all too well.

Wonderful. I've had 3 Lincoln's. My first car when I was 15, was a split pea green 1969 Lincoln Continental sedan with dark ivy gold top and interior. Then I had 2 different 1962 Lincoln's, I had a Dark Cherry 62' with tri colored, tan, mauve and white interior. My Last Lincoln was a Sunburst yellow 62' Lincoln with black leather.

In '78, I got a regular Mark V, the designers were very expensive. The 460cid 4V, was ultra smooth, the MOONROOF was big, the Vanity mirrors came on both visors. I got the velour interior, & power everything, yet, still cheaper than the designers series. All I changed was the tires. I had the Vogues &original wire rims. Everywhere I drove ppl had to peek. I enjoyed driving north & south the east coast. After '78, the Mark V hung out but w/o the big 460. 79s had the regular FORD 400cid 2V. Some ppl didn't notice the difference but in a Town Car, it was felt. Mine was a slate colored, w/grey Landau vinyl top. After 69k miles it became a $$$pit. But til this day NEVER drove a mobile living room Again. Imagine that 460cid w/today's 10spd auto, & fuel injection? My dad drove a 76 Cadillac Eldorado w/ fuel injection, it would kick my Mark's ass almost every time. KINGS OF THE HILLS. That's what they were.🏆

Got the mark iv in light beach yellow with 30k miles. Drives like a dream. U need to take care of things and they last. Be it new car or old. My Acura TL to be honest is in worse condition than the Lincoln. When u drive the yatch, u can't tell how fast you're going on a highway. U feel like you crush those little Honda. All cars look small to you including trucks. U feel like a boss, with that boxy cockpit. U dont drive these too fast. U cruise in them. This car is a peaceful experience. I actually prefer how quiet the engine and car is unlike the stangs or Camaro. This is a car you drive to a nice lounge near a lake on a beautiful evening.

I had a 78 with the 460 I decided I would kick it and hold it one day just to see how fast it would go at 65 it changed into second at 95 it changed into drive the speedometer needle disappeared past the 120 mark I raised up to see where the needle went when the hood blew apart and all four tires separated holy shit what a ride I limped it back to the house the tires were shaped like footballs I had to bolt the hood back together with carriage bolts those were the days

I miss these cars......they remind me of going on car rides on weekends with my grandparents. I have yet to find a car in this day and age that rides like these cars did.... you'd roll over rail road tracks and never feel it. Honestly I think my grampa used to take us for rides to get us all sleepy so we'd nap in the back. We'd fight over who got to ride in the back window of the car, who got to sit on the floor and use the "hump" to color on. Just special cars:-).

I do miss being a teenager in the early 80's, cruising around with my friends , who's parents owned these "limo's". Gorgeous car, a 2 door monsfortable it waster "coupe" The amount of "Spanish moss" in that driving area, just makes me smile, and a place I can't afford to live at. The last of Mark V's, you could balance nickels on the dashboard while it went down the road at 75-80 mph(. i got to 5 nickels ;) .The interior would eat you for how puffy and comfortable it was.

@@BaltimoreAndOhioRR Cars were (are) built for the conditions of the country. In the US, distances are great, highways stretch to the horizon, and gas was cheap. You could have an interstate cruiser from the low priced field right on up to these cars, with improvements as you went up.
