When it comes to cars, Barry's mind is never far away from the drag strip. He's now set his staff to finding a '64 Fairlane to become nothing less than a Thunderbolt.
What plans: a 427 V-8 engine, fibreglass hood, over-sized rears and racing seats, and it will be street-legal. Everyone's excited, including his regular parts suppliers. Two guys from O'Reilly's turn up to pitch in for the build. It's a laugh a minute as they verbally wrestle Barry about who knows best.
And there's more; rather than risk an open auction as usual, Barry's going to start his own... at the Speed Shop! Barry, Becky and Chris hope to round up some high-rollers to duke it out in the bidding. Barry's DIY auction is a first. But if he can convert his building skills into entrepreneurship he stands a chance. And there's no commission!
Becky and Jen become event managers, a first for both. Will they have to block off the street? Who's doing the catering? What about parking? Permits? Auctioneer? The event snowballs into a logistics nightmare.
And there's another wildcard; paint and body guy Tony starts thinking he might just bid for the Thunderbolt himself! Barry has no idea. This could be their most eventful auction yet.

Watching the auction, that lady in white who appparently works for the auctioneers needs to have her ass kicked for touching, leaning on, laying her body with buttons and buckles across the car while the bidding's going on. Hopefully Barry or the new owner have told her - if that car has ONE SCRATCH or scuff, just ONE - YOU sweetcheeks are paying full bore for a complete repaint! We see people like this all the time at car shows, leaning on, feeling, etc with no regard for the work and money it takes to do these cars,, can you believe how disrespectful some people who should know better are,, unbelievable!

@Dave Micolichek Yup, was my first love in 64, saw it at one of the L.A. area drags for first time, can't remember, either Irwindale or Fontana, maybe a Winter Nationals, maybe Pomona, pretty sure not Lions, but we kids in HS were at all of them each weekend we could get away. Ended up with a 67 Cyclone, inspired by seeing Dyno Don at those drags. Even got it from Sachs and Sons in Downey. Those were the days until the "call to duty" came soon after in May 67!!! Now I'm back again going "back to the future"!! :D

With a shop setup, I'd go with a proper crane and piss that engine hoist right off. Some custom period rocker covers on the mill wouldn't hurt either - something finned to retro the look of the engine.

Aaron Crowley: Those "reverse teardrop" hood scoop with the true cowl induction were the "hot" item back in their day and much sought after. I had a fiberglass hood with that scoop on my '63 Ford Fairlane with a 289 when I was in high school. Had to install it with the four pin setup though as they weren't renforced enough to be able to take the abuse that hood hinges and latches would have subjected them to. The pins with the slide on clips looked "cool though". Or so I thought at the age of 17. Then again, metalflake red steering wheels were "cool" too. Go figure.

Yeah, I have one of those fiberglass teardrops on my 64 Caliente; it looks really bitchin' on that little red car, an A/FX touch. Has a 302 in it but the hood makes it look like it might be a 427. My hood is really sturdy and takes the hinges at back and pins up front!!

Everything is automatic. What the fuck? In the last episode, Barry didn't even know how to put a flywheel on when they FINALLY made a stick. I wouldn't go to this guy solely based on the fact that he has no idea how to make a standard shift car. It's not a "super muscle car" if it's a 3 speed automatic lol.

Firstly they're persistently grouping this car in with the FordThunderbolt,, well,, it's really cool but anything close to Thunderbolt is it being a '64 Fairlane and the fiberglass fenders and glass bubble hood. Many of us are suspect of these guys doing a job like this under such rediculous time constraints. From a quick drive by this one looks really cool, but just how good can it be when slammed thru Barrys shop so quickly. Just like the legendary Chip Foose and a group of others doing these redu and flips under stupid time constraints - SOMETHING WILL BE A SHORTCUT which will be the demise of an unsuspecting buyers dream. Just say'n,,

I don't understand how they make any money. With 340 work hours at $100 an hour (average garage price) that's $34K, plus another $42K at least for the car and parts that's a total of $76K. It sold for $65K, which means they're in the hole $11K.
@overcastfriday81
@overcastfriday81 6 жыл бұрын
100/hr is the retail rate for outsiders. Realistically, say the garage labor costs the shop 35/hour. That's 54k, leaving 12k. Say his overhead at the shop there is 6k (especially, electrical utility and lease) per month. That leaves Barry with 6k in profit to pay his own bills (mortgage, utilities etc). I think he can make a go of it only because he runs an efficient shop, and we're assuming he pays next-to-nothing for office workers. If he paid them generous salaries, this doesn't work. A high caliber rod in 1 month is an amazing feat, even with his resources.

@Dave Micolichek Maybe now but "period" if you like that sort of thing. I had Firestone bias ply Wide Ovals on my 67 Cyclone in 66-67. On my new one, I built in 05-010, I have BF g's T a's, look good with stock wheel covers that only true Cyclones have. ;D Had a 351 Cleveland in my '70 "Stang coupe, man what a mover it was!!!! Sold to a guy in England; he "terrorizes" his little village neighborhood now!! :D

I was very disappointed to see that the front coils were cut instead of new ones wound with an increased spring rate to handle the increased weight of the new engine without sacrificing the already medicore handling. That's the sort of crap we used to do to those same era cars when we wanted to slam the front end and didn't really care about the handling. Sort of like flipping the rear shackles to increase the rear end ride highth. Alright until you took a corner hard and the shackle filled. I expected better.

I get what your saying. But profit is what keeps the lights on and the doors open...and as a matter of consequence keeps the employees fed. With a car as coveted as this one is likely to be you've got to maximize your profit. Also, disappointment is a huge part of life, Trust me I know all about this. Tony Im sure understands that. It sux he didnt get the car. But, now there's a pile of cash in his pocket and he can go shopping for a different one.
