I, for example, have a 2010 Enclave the air conditioning compressor just went out and the rising cost of repairs means that it will cost almost as much to fix it as the blue book value of the truck. After 15 years it's less cost effective to sink more money in an unreliable family vehicle that has to be dependable (to haul family). My other car is a 2016 accord with almost 200k miles - I intend to drive it till the wheels fall off but it doesn't fit my entire family so it's not an option to replace the Enclave. It's to the point I either have to invest in a new vehicle or take Uber... I have been putting it off for years but I'm going to have to buy soon out of necessity.

We’re looking at buying a RAV4. Buying a used RAV4 that is 2019-2023 is about 27-33k, with higher interest rates than buying new. I can buy a 2024 RAV4 with an interest rate about 2 points lower on the interest rate and for 31k…at the end of the day I would be spending more for the car that has 3-5 more years on it and 50-80k more miles…so I’m just getting a new one. I hear what you’re saying but I think this case is an exception
@JerryBisMe3 ай бұрын
You and I are literally doing the same thinking. I figured it makes sense for a decent/reliable car like a RAV 4
@jasonzimmerer86583 ай бұрын
This is what I’m thinking. Used cars seem way overpriced. To simplify the math, if a car is expected to last 150k (15 years) and a new car is $30k, then a used car with 50k and 5 years old should be less than 20k. But in reality the used car might be overpriced at $23k. And it’s less likely that this used car has 100k left.
@PachecoPachuco2 ай бұрын
That exception is the same exact reason why your broke and have to finance a car !
@jasonzimmerer86582 ай бұрын
@@PachecoPachuco he didn’t say 0% down, but you have a point
@whitemamba27202 ай бұрын
@@PachecoPachuco well, ignoring the false attribution to my being broke (i.e. the exception existing doesn’t by default make me broke, it is my financial decisions that make me broke), I agree that buying a car outright saves you money over the lifetime of a potential loan- that is a no-brainer. In fact, I never thought I would buy a new car, I’ve had several cars throughout my lifetime and I have always paid cash for a used car, drove it, maintained it myself, until I’ve had to sell it. That worked just fine until I entered a professional track that has required me to have no paid employment for nearly four years now, and my wife and I are planning on having another child in the next couple of years. In the midst of this our very reliable car for which we had no payments was totaled as what I presume was a drunk driver rammed into the back of it and drove off into the night. So now, with no way to scale my income due to my contractual obligations, and now no means for transportation and a family to move around the country for the year, I needed a reliable option for a vehicle. My options were limited- I could either take the payout from the insurance company and realistically buy a sedan with about 12-14 years and 120,000 miles on it, or I could take that money and use it as a reasonably sized down payment on something more reliable- such as a newer used vehicle or a brand new vehicle. Every other time in my life, I would have just bought a used car I could afford with the insurance payout, but unfortunately, used cars with that kind of mileage and age can be prone to breaking down- there’s just no way to ensure that will never be the case. If I took that payout money, and bought a used car, which then broke down, I would have no insurance payout, no income, and no vehicle. If it were just me, I would be okay with taking that risk- but I’m not comfortable putting my family in that situation if there is an alternative. Now personally, the most important factor to me in purchasing a car is the reliability of said car, and so Toyota among a few other makes/models are my go-to. I don’t care about luxury or style, performance, etc. At the outset I was sure I would opt for a newer used vehicle, and I decided that if I were to go that route I should just go ahead and get an SUV, since we are planning on having another child within the lifetime of this next car, and a sedan would not be practical in that case. So my sights were set on something like a Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, or SUV’s with similar price points and reliability, perhaps a Mazda CX-5, for instance. What I found however, was the exception that I previously mentioned in my original comment- that over the lifetime of a loan on a newer used vehicle, I would pay MORE than to just buy the same make/model brand new. Of course the downside to going this route vs buying a used car I could afford outright with the insurance payout is that I would now have a monthly payment. Here’s the thing. Come next June there is about a 98% chance I’ll be making $60,000-$70,000/yr for the next three years, and then $320,000-360,000/yr thereafter. So the decision really came down to whether I would have no payment, but also no recourse if the car broke down, or a payment that I can manage for the next 8 months, which will then be relatively negligible for the next few years, and then completely irrelevant afterwards, and have a factory warranty to cover mechanical/electrical issues in the event they should occur. For me, it made sense in my specific situation to go ahead and sign up for a manageable payment that basically ensures my family and I have reliable transportation until I’m in a position financially where it becomes almost a non-issue. I don’t disagree with you that it is financially wiser to buy something with cash instead of financing it, but I have more to consider than the 2 grand I will pay in interest over the lifetime of the loan (much less if I pay it off early).

I just bought a Honda CRV service loaner with 4200 miles on it. Honda is offering .99% interest rate which is 3 points lower than buying a new one. The Flow dealership also gives you 100,00 power train warranty and 80,000 bumper to bumper warranty. I think it goes on until the end of August. Honda used cars with great credit is the best deal around. I went to Toyota and Hyundai and there cheapest rate was 5.99%. Just FYI. just picked up a 2024 VW Jetta S for, all-in out the door $21.7K. Stick shift too, which was a bit of a hard find (had to settle on color, but wanted a stick more). That's 300 bucks over MSRP, all in. I'm good with that for a new purchase in 2024. Did decide to extend the bumper to bumper (Platinum plan) warranty all the way to 10 years and 120K miles (had the option to go to 150K, decided against that option) for $3.5K with military discount. Given I'm already that much into out of warranty AC repairs on my 2019 Sonata, I thought that was a cheap premium to amortize over 10 years of future repairs, which VW promises to be more expensive than the Korean and Japanese brands. For the classic cars - anything 1980s - mid 2000s (German cars, BMWs for me), are starting to be a bit ridiculous, since their prices are going up. I grew up seeing these cars being the "craigslist specials" for like $3000 bucks, now some of these things are $7000+ in a "driver, but fixer upper" state. The only downside for most is that some of these cars (that were driven and taken care of) show upwards of 200k+, most people get scared but being in Illinois and as long as its rust free and a weird spec, clean title and so on.... for the most part its worth it if you want something "old school". I already missed out on some cool E46 M3 Deals (granted they were SMGs) but iv seen E46 M3s for $5000-$8000 (coupes). Someone listed a E46 M3 manual for like $10,000 the other day and it was gone with in minutes of the ad going up for sale.

Used cars are not budging. A used 2 year old Civic cost 2/3 grand less than new. Also, wages have skyrocket during the CVid and that is a huge part of the cost as well. So no, you need to see massive layoffs to see price drops.

some of the people think i am nuts for doing this but others are glad because they have been buying parts from me at a lower price. what i have been doing is buying up liquidation pallets that have new car parts on. I have brought around $100,000 worth of nos car parts for just shy of $10,000 so far. they don't want to sell car parts when the car starts to age out because so many just toss them out and buy something newer. I own a few cars around here and whenever i find pallets that have stuff on that matches my vehicles i buy that pallet but there is always stuff on it i have no need for and resale. the easy stuff to resale off of them are like the civic and accord parts(economy cars) but your more expensive vehicles like your escalade, those are hard to sell. i am watching a honda pilot that is local to me that auctions off this week that has suspension damage that is quite cheap yet and i have all the parts here for it to fix it, so i might have a pilot for sale in 2 weeks.

With the FED announcing a rate cut some activity may pick up when that happens. But insurance costs and prices will still be a huge drag on the overall costs. This will be interesting to see if rate cuts make much of a difference at all when they happen.

When he gets to talking about classic cars at the 14 minute mark, he’s EXACTLY right!!!! Those that remember the Dodge Stealth R/T TT AWD AWS, i picked up a clean one last year for $22,500.00!!!! i bought it because an ex-girlfriend of mine bought one a 1993 model and i fell in love with it!!!! When i bought mine, i had no idea the inquires that were to come!!!! A LOT of Gen Z and young Millennials would always ask about it and take pictures of her!!!! One youngest, a serious buyer, he offered me $28,000 and another one a few weeks later, semi serious, he offered $30,000!!!! Nope and nope!!!! It REALLY hit me while stopped at a stop 🛑 light!!!! A, no bullshit, Dodge Challenger, not Charger, a Challenger, was RIGHT next to me, the youngsters were in the crosswalk!!!! When they saw my car, they were in aw asking about it and taking overs of it!!!! It was at that moment i decided to store her and put Classical Insurance on her!!!! i was lucky because a friend let me store it inside of his garage and charges me only $125 a month for storage because he doesn’t need the money!!!! Car storage is usually $350!!!! Lastly, if you can get a 1991-1993 Dodge Stealth R/T TT AWD AWS, 1991-1999 Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4, and 1991-1993 Nissan 300 ZX 2+2, get one or two of you can!!!! There are VERY popular in 2024!!!! Their character in body style ALONE, nice!!!!

If you're in the market for a new truck, look at the 2024 Ford F150 STX... They're offering around $10k of discounts. Many of these trucks have been on the lot for over 100 days. They're good trucks. With the $10k off, the prices are typically around $40k. Not cheap, but with all the technology that comes standard, it isn't the worst deal in the world. With so many base model vehicles offering more tech than they used to, it makes sense that base model costs are going to be higher than they used to be... They're definitely still too high imo, but not outrageous... The luxury trims are the ones with outrageous prices.

I have an 87' El Camino, she just needs all brand-new fluids, maybe a fuel tank and new tires and should be good to go. My great grandpa left her for me but I was too young at the time to take care of her and so she has sat for the better part of 12+ years. Ran when parked and I have a brand-new engine and transmission for it. I'm genuinely thinking of getting it up and running since that'll be cheaper than going out and getting into debt to get a new car or even spending 10-15k on a new to me used car. I wouldn't be daily driving it as my mom has a 2024 Honda CRV that is plenty reliable for me to get to work with at the moment. The car market is not what it was when I was 14 or 15 and a mustang gt with the performance pack before they even came out with the 2018 refresh and made the performance pack level 1 and performance pack level 2, and you could get a 2015 or 2016 mustang gt premium with a manual transmission or automatic with the performance package and not pay more than 42 maybe 43k if it had all weather floor mats or some bs dealer upsell. Nowdays well optioned mustang gt premiums are going for 65-70k+, absolutely bonkers

Until these big "used" car dealerships start losing cash again, you have to sit on the sidelines. Carvana's stock price went from $50 to $350 per share between 2020-2021 based on sales volume. In 2022, it dropped back down below $5 a share. It has now climbed back to $150 and keeps rising. These stocks aren't rising because the consumer is getting "great" deals.
