I needed a new pickup. We keep our vehicles for 15-20 years or 250K - 300K miles. On 2/29/24 I bought a new “leftover” 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed, TRD performance exhaust with the Premium and Technology pkgs. Yes it’s a Loaded pickup. With all of the extras my dealership put on it, the price was close to $58K but I bought it for $48K and the window sticker (MSRP) was $51,848. I think that I got a good deal. I drive 8-10K miles per year and at my age it’ll be the Last pickup I’ll ever own. I’m quite sure that after I’m dead my wife will still be using it to plow the 5-7 feet of snow off our private road every winter until she too passes away.

@@marysaltlife1427 I’m almost 60 years old and my current Tacoma is my 4th vehicle. My wife’s Camry was 18 years old when we donated it to our church and I surprised her with a (new to us) 2 year old lease returned Outback for her 50th birthday in 21. I had been looking for a new Outback but I came across the one I bought her. It had only 5,600 miles on it and it was almost $6K Under blue book. Every winter she’d have to park her Camry for 2-3 months because of our snow levels, so she’d have to drive my 11 Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6 and I’d have to drive our old pickup. After I bought her the Outback she bugged me for 2 years to downsize from 3 vehicles to 2. We needed a new truck so I sold it and we traded in my car and bought our (my) current truck.

The price on trucks with discount isn't terrible could be better. The issue why we sold and never returned (Especially our Ram 3500 dually) is that recalls are insane every month a new one and your truck would sit for 2-3months waiting on diagnostics or parts without them or insurance covering a comparable. Even when we did the fuel recall with full coverage we had to cover for parts they said wasn't directly on recall but was a consequence of failure (fuel pump exploded cause lines tank and turbo failure - they only cover the pump hanger, tank and labor, still came out $1800 after 1 month back and forth). Lol the thing is they log all codes in the pcm even if you try and diagnose it yourself and fix it you won't be able to reset cel 😂. New cars are married to the dealership. 😢

I just went by a Ford dealership today in the Phoenix AZ area to look at the Ranger Raptor. They had none in stock, but had around 5 coming in soon. 2 of them had a deposit on them. They are adding a $10,000 premium over the sticker and then about $3k in dealer add-ons. So now a $57,000 Raptor will be around $70k! Ridiculous! I just can't figure out how they can look you in the face with a smile and stab you in the back at the same time.

My GMC terrain engine blew up. They didn't care at all. When I went to Ford they couldn't explain the discounts provided. And nobody could convince me to buy a Chrysler/Dodge product. I went to Toyota and they said we can get you a hybrid but you'll have to wait a month. I said let's do it. I bought a Prius, and now a Corolla Cross. They get nearly 60 and 50 MPG respectively. Both have the same powertrain with nearly 200HP, known for running 300K without any real issues when maintained. It takes me less than one minute to FILL my tank. I've never spent over $30 on a fill up. And when I look at the prices of a used Prius with nearly 300K on it, some are still near $10K. Keep your trucks and the companies that don't care about making a quality product. I'll wait a bit for mine.

I'm still driving my 2000 Ford Explorer. I just replaced the original transmission after 314,000 miles. It was still shifting fine but was leaking too much transmission fluid. The OHV 4.0 is still going strong and starts right up. It may be underpowered by 2024 standards with 160hp and 220 ft lbs of torque, but it weighs thousands of pounds less than new suvs so it keeps up just fine.

In the end the dealership could NOT MATCH the interest rate...their best rate was almost 2% higher, so naturally we said no way...then they REFUSED to sell us the car with the outside financing.... Went 20 miles up the road, found a similar car with less miles, did the deal, transfered the $$ and drove a car home. Only difference from being a cash buyer was adding a lienholder to the title paperwork. Brings up the question...are dealership showing prices that are losing $$$ amd expecting to make $$ on the loans?!

Unless it's a hard to find car... used car sticker prices is obscenely overstated, because you never know if there's a sucker coming on the lot. I would think you can get at least -20% off whatever the used car sticker price. I would haggle for -30% off or more, and pay cash (no trade-in; or dealer financing). And if you want to play games, nego a super low price, agree to dealer financing and pay off the car after your first payment (be sure there's no prepayment penalties, and the cost of the first payment is factored into the deal price... since that first payment is almost all interest).

I could trade it i , but why?? That’s lowering the supply of used cars… Used car demand is up because new cars are priced too high….

At this point it is more than just the prices. COVID and the supply chain issues showed consumers that they will be absolutely fine without purchasing a new vehicle every handful of years. With the increase in people working from home and tightening budgets, new cars have become a luxury purchase rather than seen as a necessity. I was someone who was always looking at the latest car sites and always had a car I was interested in buying, the typical 'car guy'. Now with everything that has gone on with inflation, dealership gouging, and realizing that I am absolutely fine driving an older vehicle, especially with all the money I save, I would be happy if I never have to buy another vehicle in my life, and will do everything I can to keep the one I have on the road.
