We do care actually, believe it or not. I will freely admit my exhaust is modified, and it is definitely audible. But it is nowhere near what I would call loud. It’s got a factory cat, and a custom 3” exhaust with a good quality muffler… loud enough for me to hear it and have fun, but I don’t get headaches while I drive, i can actually listen to my stereo, and usually it’s quiet enough that no one would think of it. Even when I’m flooring it in boost, it’s noticeable but reasonable outside. IMO this is the best course to take, especially for street driven vehicles. I’ve had the ever loving shit scared out of me by some bang tune BMWs, Hondas, and slew of silly Harleys. Those are well beyond the “loud pipes save lives” marker, and end up scaring people and getting adrenaline going, which is never a recipe for a safe driver. Usually I’ll pull off and let my heart slow down before I keep going, because I’m aware that I can’t safely drive in that state… but most people aren’t aware of that We should really change the saying to “audible pipes save lives”

We really need more valved exhaust systems so that they can be quiet in residential areas and at night, but still open them up when nobody else is around or when you're at the track. Really, every problem facing the car community right now is due to people who don't know how to be courteous. @Holozaur Жыл бұрын
except its not. Im all for modifying cars but I do like what the TUV has done in Germany. Parts are TUV certified and laws are in place to ensure vehicle safety. Plain and simple. And it works! you can have a track monster so long as you meet spec. The young drivers that can barely afford parts throwing slammed springs on the car or crappy stretched tires on a 10 inch wheel with 10 degrees of camber are a safety problem. Exhaust loudness is a nonsense but I can see it from other people's perspective. Again i have a modded rs5 with a rear resonator delete. My exhaust is valved, can be quiet when desired not quiet otherwise. Works great.

Unfortunately....a lot of people do the opposite...they purposely rev the car out at 2:00am in the neighborhood and annoy everyone....this happens a lot in my area personally.....so yeah I love modified exhausts, but at the same time....I'm not against them just banning them altogether since a lot of the drivers have zero respect for others around them.
@black_n5492 Жыл бұрын
This is my take too. A lot of drivers have proven they aren't responsible enough to handle the freedom to drive with modified exhausts. And I don't think framing this as an old person issue makes sense either. It's just good old common sense, right time and place and respect/consideration for others who may not share the same passion as you. There's a time and place to let your engine sing. Just not every single time you're on the road at all hours

100% I’ve had numerous, VERY loud cars in my past. I wasn’t a nuisance with them. Less people would care if the owners of those loud cars operated them like they have consideration for the rest of the community. I also living in an area that was easier to do that in than a densely populated suburban center. Driving a loud car through an area with children out playing in yards? Well, be aware that loud exhaust makes the average person think you’re driving faster than you are. People don’t like what they perceive to be wreckless driving around their children and pets. Driving in the middle of the night? People that have to work regular hours don’t care for being woken up by a young, unemployed, school-aged kid/adult cruising the town at 3am on their summer break. Having fun setting off car alarms by rev bombing your car in park in garages? Again, that pisses people off. There’s more people with “normal” exhausts than loud ones….they can and will out-vote you.

First of all, I find it absolutely hilarious that I've seen every single clip they used in that news segment. Second of all, thank you Alex! And somehow they typically go unchecked by the public, or grouped in with us. Third of all I have an absurdly loud Civic. (Only when I hit Vtec yo, though) BUT If I accelerate normally it's not that bad. HOWEVER, If I pass by someone walking their dog, I'll clutch in. A women and child? Clutch in or hold the revs so it's not offensive as I go by. I also don't sit at lights revving my car. If I want to rev the hell out of it or 'drive aggressively', or bang off redline, I go into the countryside where nobody gets offended. Or I do it when there's nobody around. Why? Because I was not always a car enthusiast. As a matter of fact, I despised loud exhaust in much of a way that a Karen would. I hated people that would blow by you and shatter your eardrums, honestly I still kind of do. So I can fully understand why someone would want less douchebags with loud exhausts around. I do too!

Hey lawmakers, how about instead of targeting those who care enough to modify their cars, target those who don't care to maintain their cars. I have an "aftermarket" exhaust on my car, and I've heard belt squeal and exhaust leaks louder than mine. Also, I would love for them to define "aftermarket" because if they wanna use that as the blanket term, then that means I'm not allowed to even buy a cheaper alternative to OEM even if its meant to do the same job ASSUMING the part hasn't been discontinued because my car is more than 10 years old. Muffler shops would probably go out of business because they'd still have to buy and sell OE parts, and those aren't readily available. Then again, this is probably a way for them to push new ICE/EV cars into every household when producing EV's has been proving difficult for a lot of long standing manufacturers (I.E. Chevy recalling Bolt EV's to replace batteries).

Typically older german V8 or newer american muscle. I think crossplane and flat plane V8 sound great in their own ways, but I never thought I would be able to differentiate the two since I am firmly in the modified 4 banger crowd. In that case, I wonder if the way to enjoy loud exhaust when nobody else wants your exhaust to be loud is to remove sound deadening material in the car? But yeah, I wish non car enthusiasts would bother to look up why we do things instead of just jumping to conclusions. I've heard similar things about why people do burnouts or modify cars in general. Playing loud music from your lawn is also a great way to get the cops called. Your rights end where mine begins. This is like smoking in public, you can do whatever you want, but tobacco fumes are noxious and my rights to not be exposed to it outweigh your rights to smoke. At the minimum you can take your loud exhaust to somewhere that isn't highly populated, but a lot of car people don't seem to understand basic human decency and do pulls where thousands within earshot are chilling in their homes.

The absolute loudest exhaust I ever heard was when I was hunting. I heard a logging truck start up, and despite the fact it had to be at least a mile away it was incredibly loud. Then the truck came driving down the logging road running by where I was. It was evidently under a heavy load and was running at full throttle. By the time it passed by, I could yell at the top of my lungs and the guy I was with couldn't even hear me, and this truck was still about a hundred yards from where we were. I never saw the truck, and I can't imagine what it would have been like actually sitting in the cab of that truck.

The airplane argument is actually outdated and law enforcement don’t use them anymore. The “speed enforced by aircraft” sign functions more as a scare tactic instead of actually doing it. A buddy of mine for the VA highway patrol confirmed that it’s more effective to keep the signs up than to take it down. I am glad you didn’t bring up that straight piping the exhaust makes the car more efficient and performs better claim because that’s no longer a viable trade off argument. My job as an engineer for a particular car manufacturer is to design an exhaust system that’s both quieter and more efficient than a standard straight pipe modification. Like no kidding this redesign we’re doing increases horsepower as it reduces back pressure significantly more than a straight pipe configuration while also being quieter. Quite ironic given that I was transferred from the racing division.

It's unfortunate that there always has to be "that person" who acts immaturely / irresponsibly and ruins it for everyone else who happens to be an upstanding & passionate car owner. This leads to both intolerant people and good natured people reaching their limits & getting upset - then wanting to paint every automotive enthusiast with the same brush, and impose draconian measures. I can see it from both sides: I was out for a neighbourhood walk yesterday afternoon, it was the nicest day we've had since Fall 2022 (Canadian winter finally ending), and I could hear a flat plane crank constantly revving to what sounded like 8-9k from a mile or 2 away. This went on for nearly 10 minutes, with the sound changing to various distances away but staying in the area. It sounded like there was a track near by (there isn't, it's all city streets and a couple of the most major roads - but only 4 lanes wide - in our city of 130,000), and I was taken aback, thinking, "ooooh, people aren't gonna like this.... I don't think I like it (given the proximity to the neighbourhood)" even though I had an appreciation for that kind of sweet high revving sound. It's just, given the environment, I can understand how some people really let it get it under their skin (just like how the sound of a dog barking can really get under some people's skin - but you don't see us outlawing all dogs). Punish the scumbag offenders, don't punish everyone with a short sighted overkill "blanket" law. I hope it's not misinterpreted as a "strawman", but just as there are bad dog owners (neglectful, leave the dog ignored, out of control barking like crazy disturbing the entire neighbourhood), there are bad car owners who go bouncing the needle off the redline at intersections, or flooring it on city & residential streets. For those of us who own "classic" classic cars or what are now becoming classic 30 year old Japanese cars (the 90's were 10 years ago, right?? 🤯) OEM exhausts don't last forever. For example, the only rusty part of a well kept Japanese turbo car was the factory exhaust system. It was replaced with an aftermarket stainless steel system since you can't get OEM exhausts anymore, and it had the surprise added benefit of increasing fuel economy by 3 MPG while still passing all local emissions testing requirements. Yes, it is louder at idle, but you never go around acting like the stereotype on the street. Responsible, passionate car ownership! Cruise down the highway, or take it to the track / local autocross. 😎👍 One of the important things is, our cars are getting old, they need new exhausts, and the OEM exhaust may either already above the arbitrary decibel level that someone ends up enforcing, and / or you can't get an OEM exhaust anymore. Improvements have been made in design & technology. A new aftermarket exhaust can be of better quality, improve performance, and improve fuel economy. You can't blanket outlaw quality performance aftermarket exhausts - it's short sighted and an over reaction. Cars need replacement & improvement parts, and we wanna keep our treasures on the road for years to come (new cars are just missing that "intangible" factor that old sports cars have). 😬 longest comment ever... but yeah, those new camera systems to identify loud cars, I can't see how that's trustworthy in high volume traffic. Are they accurate enough to distinguish between a low revving OEM spec sports car that's side by side on the road with a daily beater that hitting redline with a broken exhaust? Does the sports car get "profiled" and charged instead of the actual offender?
