Exception: any car who’s weight is over 6,000 lbs from factory, is exempt from the decibel reading. Basically it can be as loud as you want it to be, but even then you need to be compliant with smog laws, which require you to have mufflers. I found this out after i got refereed for loud exhaust in my Durango.

The decibels law went up to 120 now because alot of cars are 100db from the dealership, Corvette Z06 is an example. Stock exhaust is at 105db.

My question is if aftermarket exhaust companies won’t be able to sell certain products to California anymore? Or do they have to do some kind of certification like a CARB sticker does for an intake? This law will really hurt their sales to this state cause nobody buys an aftermarket exhaust because they want it to sound like stock.

It sucks because we have always followed California emissions laws by not installing headers and removing catalytic converters. They are easy to do, but we never did it because its against the law. Some Yahoo shops in the LA area love installing and removing them, and now it looks like were all screwed.

It's a federal law in all 50 states. Clean air act 1970. All vehicles made 1972 to present must have all emissions equipment working for use on public streets. On a licensed inspector for PA and NJ.

I am a liberal and i am all for going green but restricting car modding is not the way to do it. the best thing us car guys can do is advocate for Bio gas. that way we can uses the biggest, thirsty engine we want while still being carbon neutral!

@@Lethalgarage but full Bio gas (not ethanol) would work in any car and be carbon neutral. E85 you need the engine able to run it reliably. if we could make gasoline (exactly the same chemically) using bio waste then everybody could be happy

Actually per California law, California will generally NOT emissions exempt any car built after 1975. Don't like it? Either get the law changed, challenge it in court (good luck with that) or MOVE to another state.

Loud exhaust by itself does NOT make horsepower! I'm OK with an end to FART CAN exhausts, Friend of mine put dual straight pipes on a Corvette without even having glasspacks and it was mellow and quiet at cruising speeds and idle, but barked at the top end, AND got 30 MPG highway! Build your car fast and quiet and stop advertising what you have under the hood!

Decibels don't work the way you think they do. It's based on logarithmic scales. Something twice as loud is an increase of only 3 decibels. Something at 83 decibels is twice as loud as 80. Something at 95 is the same as 32 times (2x2x2x2x2) the ear poundings as 80. I can't even imagine how loud your car gets at full rev. Apart from being annoying to others you might even be causing hearing damage if there's pedestrians nearby. Look up safe noise levels, anything above and you're risking hearing damage. I for one am glad for noise laws for public roads. If you want to be loud on a track that's fine, everyone there expects it. Just don't force your noise on people who don't.
