Great news if it pans out! I learned to drive in the late 1970’s on a 1974 Mazda RX-4 Wagon (with the same rotary engine that was in the RX-7). It was a great manual transmission car with lots of pep and fun to drive. We had no problems with the seals. I would buy a rotary powered vehicle if offered by Mazda again… with a stick shift!
@nathanhansford763 ай бұрын
Wonderful story, but Mazda never offered the rotary engine in a wagon body. If it was rotary powered, it was sedan or coupe, if it was a wagon, it was 4cyl.
@GrayMatheson3 ай бұрын
@@nathanhansford76 - I imagine you read that somewhere, but that source is incorrect. I can assure you from my first-hand experience driving and maintaining that wagon that it did have a rotary engine. I bought that car from my Dad and owned it for 12 years through college and into my marriage. A quick internet search for a 1974 Mazda RX-4 Wagon shows it was a rotary Wankel engine, hence the RX designation and the “Rotary Wagon” badging. The wagon version was apparently rare in the USA, with the RX-4 wagon being the larger successor to the RX-3 wagon body style. Folks in their late-fifties and older that were living in the U.S. will remember the 1970’s TV commercials and print ad campaign (with the Mazda “Rotary Wagon” and the kid on the pogo stick representing the piston engine). My internet search found a 1973 RX-3 Rotary Wagon TV commercial. It was entertaining to watch over 50 years later.

Gorgeous concept. Would love to see it. Doubt we will though. For Mazda to fix emissions, fuel economy, and durability of the rotary would be an incredibly difficult task in today's regulatory environment. To turn a profit on a low volume coupe with a reasonable asking price would be next to impossible. I've always thought Mazda was using the rotary in the wrong application. They stuck it in the heavier RX models where it's lack of torque and terrible fuel economy were major liabilities. Instead they should have put it in a coupe form of the Miata. The lightweight engine (90lbs) would really be felt there. Low torque and economy wouldn't be as pertinent because the car would weigh 1,000lbs less. Durability concerns would be alleviated somewhat because most people don't put that many miles on a Miata. And they already have the platform there, speeding development and lowering costs dramatically. Just imagine a Miata Coupe with 250+hp, 2,000-2,100lb curb weight and a relatively low price tag!

Promises and speculation around the revival of the rotary have all been made many a time, but they have never borne fruit. Even models that kinda-sorta hit production were found to be so lackluster and/or unreliable that they were killed before the first model year ended. So yeah, the threshold of believable is that high for a reason.

@fadedsoul234 ай бұрын
They can achieve this with a series-parallel setup where it can power the wheels but can also charge the batteries if need be, whereas a series hybrid only charges the batteries. And I find series hybrids lame as hell. Keep series hybrids to commuter cars, not a sports car like this

The pop up headlights: it won't. The pedestrian crash regulations already caused that feature extinct in the past. But it is ironic the over 5 feet tall front of full size SUV are allowed while pop up headlights got banned.
@ChrisRobato4 ай бұрын
Good question. The answer should be no. Even the turnover of MX-5 seems slow, and I see MX-5s that were traded in. The Camaro has been discontinued, the Supra is on the deathlist because the Z4 is. The Z seems to be a flop. For the same amount of money as these vehicles you can get a big pickup or SUV, that you might be more comfortable in and are more suited as dailies. Older more affluent people also tend to have families, which they want to vacation with. Or just go to the mall or restaurant somewhere. Overlanding and camping are the in thing these days, you want a vehicle to drive you to where you want to hike or trail run. Lifestyle has changed. Why would I be a resurrected RX-7 when I can buy a CX-90? Even the one made this video bought himself a Land Cruiser, he himself is representative of the buying trend of the senior market. When I was young the RX-7 was my dream car, but now for the equivalent cash I would plug myself with an SUV instead.

Highly doubt this is happening. We've been going back and forth on speculation on an RX-8 successor for nearly two decades. The inherent design of the rotary makes it tough to survive in a world with tightened emissions regulations, difficult to meet the performance of rivals and with supplemental electric motors, would undo the benefits of the lightweight engine itself. Don't get me wrong I love rotaries and even owned an RX8 R3 years ago and deeply regret parting with, but we've been down this road soo many times with Mazda before. They're the king of concepts and far beyond from the company that brought us the sportscars of yesteryear. Don't forget they just axed the Mazda 6 which was on track to receive a Turbo Inline-six with RWD; in favor of focusing on SUV's. What could possibly make people believe they're going to make a bespoke new sportscar, with an engine they've struggled to bring back for years, within a shrinking sportscar market and expect it to even survive?
